FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Your Board of Directors met on May 13th by Skype. Although we were unable to meet in person, much was accomplished.
Ian McIntyre had obtained quotations for the washing and repairing the back deck at the clubhouse. A motion was made and passed to allow that work to go ahead. Ian had also obtained a quotation for repairs to the gazebo in the parkette between Seres and Edwin. That work was approved. A quotation was also presented to repair the board fence in the parkette on the west side of Wilson Ave, north of Dereham Dr. That was approved. The work on these various projects will commence shortly.
The Pretium Reserve Fund Study was presented and approved for use as a guide to plan for future spending. When we are allowed to re-open our community centre, copies of the study will be available to residents who are interested.
Ian McIntyre pointed out that cracks have formed in the pavement of the community centre parking lot. He suggested that these could be filled soon as there is little traffic on the lot currently. That was approved.
The Board is also proceeding with some additional repairs to the clubhouse ie eaves troughs, exterior cleaning and painting as well as interior painting. When we finally get to enjoy our clubhouse once again, it should be just lovely.
Recently, new folding card tables were purchased and the old non-folding ones are available for anyone who is interested. Please contact Garry Armitage to arrange for pick up.
The government seems to be easing up the restrictions on our lives. Perhaps next month, we may actually be able to open the centre. I doubt that we will be allowed to have a dance, a dinner or any type of large gathering in the near future. And how we may be able to hold our AGM, I have not a clue. A virtual AGM is unlikely and complicated. We are required to have 87 homes represented to have a quorum. To have six feet between each person attending, we would have to restrict the numbers of attendees. Or, perhaps we could hold it in the backyard and require everyone to wear a mask. I am certainly open to suggestions so, if you have a good idea, please contact myself or another Board member.
In the meantime, stay healthy everyone! I hope to be able to see all of you soon.

NEW BOARD MEMBERS REQUIRED
The Board of Directors will be looking for three new Directors to be
elected at our AGM. We are also looking for residents to form a
nominating committee.
Please contact any current Board Member for further information.
An Update from the Committee Addressing Traffic Concerns on Wilson Avenue
As most of you will agree, there has been a significant increase in traffic volume on Wilson Ave, due primarily to the rapid growth of residential family dwellings west of our Community. We now find ourselves dealing with more private and commercial vehicles, including school buses etc; using Wilson Ave as a short cut. Speeding and disturbing noise levels pose a health and safety risk for our residents. The committee is striving to have the problem fixed. By the time you read this article a virtual meeting will have taken place with the Council on May 25th 2020. Once we hear what the town council plans to do about our concerns, updates will be posted on the Hickory Hills FaceBook page and in the Holler.
Note: Wilson Ave residents had addressed these concerns in the past (when there were considerably less homes west of us), and were not successful. The feedback from the O.P.P. at that time was, "several of the speeders were in fact Hickory Hills residents! Unfortunately we still have a few residents with loud muscle cars, oversize pickups and a lead foot. You're reminded that we live in a senior community so please be considerate of your neighbours and tone it down; if you want to race, do it elsewhere but not in Hickory Hills. Thank you.
In the meantime, as weather improves, more residents including those dealing with vision, hearing loss and mobility issues, will be out and about. We suggest you take extra caution when traveling on, or attempting to cross Wilson Ave. Enjoy the summer and stay safe.

Pool Volunteers Needed For The Season
We’ve posted a need for pool volunteers and haven't received any responses to date. Some residents who have assisted us in the past are still willing to do so, but haven't put
their names forward due to the uncertainty regarding COVID-19 restrictions and when we will be allowed to open the pool. Ian Palk has already taken the initiative of contacting Southwestern Pool & Spa and set a date for the first week in June 2020 to start the process of getting the pool ready. He has also been in touch with the Southwestern Health Dept. and will notify us when they plan to inspect pool water condition and authorize Hickory Hills to open the pool to residents. As in previous years, we're very fortunate to have Ian Palk on the team again; he's offered to manage and take care of the pump house mechanical and electrical equipment etc. In the event we get the green light to open the pool this summer, we are still in need of volunteers willing to assist with pool openings and closings. Volunteers commit to one day a week for approximately 2.5 hours and if we have enough volunteers it makes it a lot easier and less time consuming to keep the pool open all week. Please submit your name to any of the Board members and thank you for doing so. Unfortunately without volunteer help the pool would remain closed. Note: The official opening date is unknown at this time and assuming social distancing will still be in place this summer, we will need to figure out how to manage and control social distancing. The health and safety of our residents is top priority so we will need your understanding and cooperation to ensure we adhere to all the rules. Ian McIntyre, Director, Property & Maintenance
EDUCATION IN TILLSONBURG: PART ONE
Harriet Tillson Van Norman, George Tillson’s daughter, was Tillsonburg’s first unofficial teacher. In the
1830’s, she taught her 7 children and 3 of her siblings in a log cabin at Tillson Ave. and Simcoe Street.
The first official “school” was held in the South Chapel on Broadway, probably beginning in the 1840’s.
Then, as George Tillson believed in the benefits of educating Tillsonburg’s children, circa the mid-1850’s he
built the Common School, a two-storey brick structure on Harvey Street, just south of Avondale Church,
where the parking lot at the corner of Brock Street and Harvey Street is now. On September 7th, 1871, 207
students were registered, but the average attendance was only 147 for that month. There were three
teachers: Mr. A. H. Brown, head teacher; Miss Mary Croley and Miss Sebma Marrett, whose combined
salaries amounted to $1300 for the year. The subjects of study were: Arithmetic, Grammar, Geography,
Writing, Dictation, Latin, Greek and Saxon Roots, Algebra and English History.
The end of 1871 was marked by a Christmas Party and distribution of prizes to the school children, which
was reported in the January 4, 1872 “Tillsonburg Observer”. The Christmas tree was decorated with the
prizes and candles. Before the prizes were awarded, the pupils sang songs and recited dialogues. The
reporter regretted “the disgraceful behaviour” of a number of the boys and young men who interrupted the
proceedings several times.
The Common School closed at the end of June, 1872, because the school trustees had wanted to upgrade
the building and grounds, so a new Rolph Street Public School had been built, which was also two storeys
high, and could accommodate 450 pupils.

TO OUR READERS
As most of you will appreciate the past few months have given us, as editors, additional challenges in
getting the Holler to your front door. With no entertainment and other activities to fill the pages, we’ve
tried to be creative, lighthearted and entertaining.
We appreciate the input from residents who have contributed to the Holler this month, Frank and Deb
Wright with trivia (answers next month), Sylvia Rees with the crossword and Pat Carlson working on
providing a different form of Canada Day celebrations.
We are providing a new challenge for you this month – kiddie pictures of your Board of Directors and
some of your Holler Team. We are hoping that we can continue this fun activity in the coming months
and if you wish to participate, please email your photo in jpeg format to us at the Holler email at
Let us know what you enjoyed in the last two Hollers and we will keep it going. Any ideas that we
haven’t thought of? We’re sure you have some and we would love to hear from you.

HICKORY HILLS TRIVA RESULTS
Well folks, this has been an interesting quest. Kudos to Gail & Nestor Gulka, Linda & Jean Paul Lanteigne
and Doreen Orth for completing all the streets. As some of the questions are subjective, there are a range of
answers, also probably due to distractions by friendly neighbours! So, here’s the results:
Compass course on Wilson N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW (whew!)
There are 19-23 fire hydrants in Hickory Hills
There are 21 (or 22) stop signs in Hickory Hills
There are 56 parking spaces at the clubhouse
On Armstrong there are 7-13 sidelights and 10-15 houses with a white garage door
On Balazs Court there are 3-6 houses with cream coloured siding and 2-5 black doors
On Brasher there are 9 or 10 double car garages and 2-4 interlock driveways
On Dereham there are 1 or 2 burgundy doors
On Edwin there are 11-14 houses with a loft and 27-38 houses with a front porch
On Hawkins there are 23-28 trees in front yards and 14-17 blue houses
On Jackson there are 11-14 with a rectangular front door inserts and 11-13 houses back onto the ravine
On McDonald there are 2 or 3 houses with brick frontage
On Seres there are 4-6 houses with shutters and 2 or 3 doors with oval inserts
On Sinclair there are 4-8 pink/plum doors and 10 concrete driveways (yeah!)
On Wilkins there are 4 houses with a loft and 2 green garage doors (consensus there)
On Wilson there are 36-42 single car garages and 48-50 houses have a front porch.
As you can tell these numbers have not been tabulated by Ernst & Young or any other legal accounting firm.
Therefore you are all declared a winner! Thank you for your participation.

ACTIVITY CORNER
YOGA UPDATE
Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to touch base and share some online relaxation and guided meditation recordings for those of you who, like me, are missing the wonderful relaxation and meditation that ends our usual yoga practice. These are stressful times and meditation has so many proven benefits. Breathing deeply, with a slow and steady inhalation to exhalation ratio, signals our parasympathetic nervous system to calm the body down. Long, deep breaths can also manage our stress responses to help decrease anxiety, fear, racing thoughts, a rapid heartbeat and shallow chest breathing. These responses can directly impact our physical, mental and emotional health, and longevity.
For each practice, begin by sitting in a comfortable position either on a chair, a meditation cushion, or yoga mat on the floor. If you choose, you may lie down comfortably on a yoga mat or a firm surface. To stay awake, it is recommended that you do not lie down on a bed. Before you start your meditation – try 4 or 5 rounds of deep breathing. Ensure that when you breathe in, your abdomen (not just the chest) fills with air and expands, and that when you breathe out the abdomen contracts and becomes empty. If your system is under stress or anxiety, you may observe that when you inhale, the abdomen moves inward and when you exhale the abdomen moves outward. This is the reverse action of correct breathing and should be modified to inhale, expand the abdomen, exhale, contract the abdomen. All practices should be done on an empty stomach.
Daily Guided Meditation at : https://youtu.be/ZToicYcHIOU
If you prefer to guide yourself and would just prefer some restful background music – here are a couple that I enjoy. Feel free to browse You Tube or play something you already have and like, whatever speaks to you.
RELAXATION : https://youtu.be/sRNMbVFYzM0 OM CHANTS : https://youtu.be/8sYK7lm3UKg
Also - For those of you using this downtime to pursue hobbies and crafts. If you find your hands are a little stiff or achy – you can try working through the hand mudras that we practice, before your meditation. I have included the “cheat sheet” on the Hand Mudra positions that we practice. Try numbers 1 through 14 from memory if you can. This is also a workout for the mind!
Stay well and safe

CANADA DAY 2020
IN
HICKORY HILLS
Options for participation….sharing your thoughts about Canada in 2020
1. Holler To share your ideas/thoughts, please submit them either by email to [email protected] or drop them off to the mail box at 94 Wilson Avenue. Deadline is JUNE 10
2. Facebook For those residents who are members of the Hickory Hills Facebook page, beginning on JUNE 10 please begin posting your thoughts, as well as photos of past celebrations. Deb Wright, the administrator of the page will ensure that all Canada Day related items will be the first ones you see when you open the Hickory Hills group.
** In compliance with the regulations of the town of Tillsonburg and the province of Ontario, we will NOT be able to celebrate with our usual flag raising, coffee hour, afternoon program. There will NOT be a large photo. Holding a symbolic flag-raising would inevitably result in a gathering that surpasses the current numbers allowed. (as of May 15).
Therefore we ask residents to gather in their red/white/flags along the
entire length of Wilson Avenue. At 11 a.m. we will join the musical
leaders in the singing of O Canada. A video of the event will be taken to share at the first Coffee Hour in ??? Hopefully residents will also take photos and submit them to the Hickory Hills Facebook page or to the Holler to be in the August edition.
**** Should any of the restrictions change, you will be notified in the next Holler which will come out at the end of June.
