Hello Everybody—

When I initially sat down to write this edition I had discussions with Karen, the Grapevine Editor, about listing the major square dance activities that were going to be impacted and thosae which we knew would have to be cancelled. By the time I actually began writing it was clear that all activities everywhere were not going to be on anyone’s schedule. Not knowing

whether facilities would be available for meetings or dances it became very easy to ignore the issue of resumption of square dancing and to deal with the very pressing issue of the coronavirus. For this, I sincerely apologize. The virus is still with us for well into the foreseeable future, but the good news is that the shut downs we’re experiencing have NOT shut down the square dance community. Our thanks go out to Mike and Lisa Seastrom who hosted a Saturday night virtual two-couple square dance on ZOOM, and to Darren Gallina and Thom Dang who broadcast an actual full square dance on a Monday morning at 9:30 a.m. to a live dance in Germany, in addition to his normal Central Coast square dance activities. All of us have an obligation to be creative in searching for ways to keep our dancing skills sharp.

Ed. Note: If you or your club finds useful ways to keep in touch with club members, keep interest in square dance high, or keep your skills sharp, we encourage you to share those ideas and methods with A Square D so we can pass them along to others. —Karen Geller-Shinn, [email protected]

Reminder — 50-50 drawings are illegal in the State of Cali-fornia, and are not sanctioned by A Square D.

A NOTE FROM YOUR INSURANCE DIRECTOR There have been some questions about what clubs can do during the COVID-19 pandemic. ASqD does NOT sanction any gathering during this pandemic. Our insurance only covers the Association and its members while participating in sponsored, supervised and recognized ASqD’s dance activities and events. Since ASqD is not sponsoring, supervising, or recognizing any dance or event during this crisis, our insurance will NOT cover you or anyone attending any event. Please contact me if you have any questions; [email protected], 310-820-7191.— Judy Fisher, ASqD Treasurer and Insurance Director

A Square D Club Happenings:Boots & Bows

At this time of writing, it is not clear when our club will begin dancing again.  We cancelled our March, April, and May dances.  Hopefully we will be back to dancing in June.  Darren Galina will be our June 20th caller and it will be Mainstream/Plus dance with no Rounds.  Andy Allemao will be our caller for the July 18th dance.  We do not have a cuer confirmed for the dance at this time.  For the August 15th dance, Pat Carnathan is the caller and Judy Keller the cuer.

The general meeting of the Boots & Bows was held in March by means of a conference call that worked very well except for the lack of delectable deserts at least at my house. Members either voted by mailing their ballots or verbally on the conference call.  The elected officers remain the same with Doug Purinton continuing as our President, Rosemary Walters, as Vice president, Connie Carroll at Treasurer, Laural Purinton as Secretary, and Kaye Roll as A Square D Delegate.

One of the events cancelled in April was our class graduation for one student.  As we have a two tier class, there will be three people moving from the Mainstream class up to the Plus class when we begin dancing again.  Graduation will be rescheduled when we are able to have classes again.

When we are all back dancing, please join us at the Riviera United Methodist Church, 375 Palos Verdes Blvd. in Redondo Beach for our third Saturday dances.  Rounds with Judy Keller or Jim Smith start at 7:00 p.m. and squares go from 7:30–10:00 p.m.  Buckles & Bows Our classes have stopped, as have all classes and dances.  We do still have 21 students eager to continue.  To keep folks interested, our caller/instructor and club member, Mike Seastrom, with help of wife Lisa, has been conducting Z classes/dances for all.  We do this through a connection on our computers or smart phones/tablets (even TVs).  It has been fun and interesting.  It is basically one couple at home dancing opposite a phantom couple.  Mike does the call and we have to pretend to dance with the phantom couple.  It goes fairly well, except that many report the the phantom couple keeps messing up.  :)  It is not quite as easy as it sounds.  But, it is great fun and so nice to interact with friends, even if on the TV screen.  We get over 100 folks participating each time, including most students.        With our club dances canceled, it would appear that we will miss our May 23rd dance with Andy Allemao.  Andy usually does a HEX workshop from 5:30 till 7 PM. Then Gus does pre-rounds till 7:30.  Our plus dance then goes from 7:30 to 10 p.m., with a mid dance HEX star tip, and an A-1 tip at 10.  We will get the word out if things change and we hold this dance.  Doubtful as of press time.        Our June graduation of these fine 21 students has been pushed back.  If we get started up again timely, we will modify or cancel our summer workshop and

Virtual Square DancesYou can’t keep a square dancer down! A growing number of callers have

modified our activity so we can get together online to see friends and even dance a little. Most of the choreography has been changed so it works with two couples. You can be at home and dance when there’re one to four participating with the remainder being phantom dancers.Caller Darren Gallina: To get notified of Darren Gallina and Thom Dang’s dances you have two options: 1. If you’re on Facebook, you can join the group “Gallina’s Groupies” at https://www.facebook.com/groups/GallinasGroupies/2. Get on his mailing list A. Send a blank email to: [email protected], Then B. When you get an email asking if you really want to join, click on Reply, don’t type anything, and then Send the email. Once you get the notifications, you can join the group online for dancing and visiting in two ways: A. The easiest way is to just watch/dance on YouTube. Just visit this link about five minutes after the dance start time,  https://www.YouTube.com/DarrenGallina/Live. Or B. Join the group on ZOOM where you can interact with others. If you don’t have this feature already, it may be downloaded at https://zoom.us/download.Caller Buddy Weaver: Buddy has produced the first three in a series of recordings for one-couple dancing.  This is for everyone to keep active at home.  These three dances will give you 15 minutes of activity so play them twice for your 30 minute workout.  Switch places with your partner and dance them again.

Buddy is adding an additional dance each week for the series. They are free to download or stream at https://buddyweavermusic.podbean.com. Caller Mike Seastrom: Mike says, “This [pandemic] physical distancing we’ve come to know does not mean social distancing and we’re beginning to discover new ways to meet, greet, and dance. We recently joined a group of 128 dancers from all over the world to dance in two-couple mini-squares, where one couple is an invisible phantom couple, and one is you and your partner, or a single dancer dancing with three phantom dancers.”

Mike invites you to his “Virtual Social and Two-Couple Dances,” for one to three dancers which will occur when he can schedule them.  Check Facebook or call or text Lisa’s Cell phone at (714) 608-3736. He will be using the ZOOM format which only requires you to click on a link he’ll send you in an email the day of the virtual dance. Mike says, “Please register with us at [email protected] now so we have an e-mail to use to send you this link. You can use your computer, with or without a camera attached (without a camera, we can’t see you, but you can see us). You can also use a tablet or cell phone if it gets email.” Caller David Mee: David and Dawn Mee are planning to have a regular virtual dance on Friday nights at 7:30 p.m. David plans to do a little mini teaching/walking through some of the figures as we go. He uses a ZOOM meeting format. Dawn even cues a round dance during the evenings square dances. Look for information on their website—dancewithme.com. Other Callers: There are lots of virtual square dances going on. You can find loads of information on Facebook at Virtual Square Dances. Also, some of the dances appear on YouTube, so if you miss the dance, look for it there.

Those of us who have tried it are excited about “Virtual square dancing” and appreciate the chance to see our friends while keeping our “physical” distance. Bring your own snacks! —Fredi Levitt, Vice President

continue the classes until all are ready to graduate.  We will keep everyone posted as to our future scheduling.        We wish all of you good health.  Keep being smart and protect yourselves.  This will also protect others.  We hope to see you all in a square in the not too distant future.Grin–N-Square It Our club dances on the 3rd Saturday each month in the Senior Center at 3120 Tyler Ave in El Monte. As of press time, all of our dances our on hold. We have a fundraiser on the third Tuesday of the month at Cabrera’s Mexican Restaurant in Duarte. The restaurant has takeout orders only. Just tell the personnel that you are part of the square dance group and write it on your receipt.

All of our members are well and adjusting to activities at home. They have been sharing what we are doing through email and phone conversations. Most of them have been doing chores around the house that we have been putting off for a long time. It is fun to hear how some members found things that they completely forgot about. We all miss being able to attend our dances and other clubs for the social aspect and hope to see you all soon. Check out our website www.grinnsquareit.com for all the latest information about our club.Lads ‘N’ Lassies

The order to “stay at home” hit in mid-March, shortly after we had our March 9 workshop and monthly birthday celebration. While we expected some disruption, the social distancing and stay-at-home order keeps getting extended.

Farmers & Charmers planned to be dark in June in support of the Boots & Slippers’ Guide Dog Benefit Dance. Our July dance falls on the 4th of July holiday, so we will also be dark. It seemed possible that the Farmers’ August dance might be able to proceed, but now even that looks unlikely. Lads & Lassies is scheduled to host on Saturday, Sept. 5, but it is uncertain if this will happen. Our anniversary is in October and it would be wonderful to celebrate it with a dance.

We continue to send our monthly newsletter even though the “news” is almost nonexistent. In early April, our editor sent a note to all members asking that they write a few paragraphs to let others know how they are faring in this surreal time. Several members plan to share their at home activities. These notes will be consolidated into the newsletter.

We are still here and we will be ready when square dancing resumes. Dance donation is $10/pp; workshop donation is $8/pp. —Joyce StillwellMajor Keys

The Major Keys square dancing club is looking forward to wishing all of

the world.   Our club leaders met via ZOOM to check in with one another and share updates on how we can support one another.   Jim and Deanne Davis have created an assembly line for face coverings and offered free masks to any members or students in need.    We pray that you and your loved ones remained healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic and are forever grateful to be able to dance together again very soon.    Ribbons & Souls Most of us are doing amazingly well in this time of isolation. Ruth Fish-er, our president, has sent periodic e-mails to all members and students, with up-lifting, inspirational messages, and poems, as well as starting Zoom get-togethers and structured meetings in order to keep our group cohesive. Shan Cretin, our class coordinator, also sent out messages to members and students. People are cooking, eating, walking, and working. People are exchang-ing jokes, funny pictures, inspirational sayings, and links to videos like the You Tube video Some Good News, episode 2, with John Krasinski. We exchange in-formation on the virus and how to cope with it. A few people got into a poetry exchange. Some people are using online classes, such as Silver Sneakers workouts. People are doing a lot of staying at home. Groceries are either bought by a delivery service like Instacart.com or at the grocery store in person or by children shopping for them. Where isolation is difficult for someone, we keep in touch with them by calling and helping them in different ways. Many members have been enjoying Zoom get-togethers and celebrations. Two of our members have a son and two grandsons that were born on April Fool’s Day, so they had an eight family, three-state Zoom birthday party for the three of them. It is good to see all the smiling faces in Zoom and to know that so many of us are doing so well. Our heart goes out to those who have lost someone.—Jan Bartholomew

Rustlers Wow, has life changed: in the world, in the U.S., California, and in all of our wonderful square dance clubs! Aren’t we all happy that we can remember the great dances, friends, club members and fun that we’ve enjoyed when we were able to go out square dancing? We have much to be thankful as we know that Covid 19 will eventually end as there will be a vaccine and we will once again be able to dance together. The time for the Rustlers is ending too. We plan to go out in style after our 53rd Anniversary Dance on January 23rd, 2021. We are grateful to have given square dancers, wonderful memories with great dances, fantastic callers and cuers, yummy refreshments, many “No Hands” badges and lots of fun for over 52 years. This has been a very difficult and sad decision, but there are not sufficient healthy members to continue running the club after Jan. 23, 2021. In the meantime, depending on the imposed social distancing rules, we have scheduled great dances for the remainder of 2020, which we invite you all to attend. Because mandated restrictions are still changing almost daily, please check wheresthedance.com or our club website before venturing out to any scheduled dance for the coming year. But for now, here’s the lineup: June is cancelled due to the virus; July dance is DARK as the church has a function; Pat Carnathan calls “Awesome PHOTO COURTESY OF MAJOR KEYS.

our square dancing friends and family a BIG WELCOME BACK!    At the Major Keys dance in February we enjoyed the fun and festivities that go along with a Sadie Hawkins dance.   Marrying Sam hitched 14 couples with an actual eight-carrot ring.

During the stay at home orders, some of our club members participated in virtual square dancing groups on Facebook enjoying the ZOOM technology to virtually dance with people from around

High Flyers The 69th National Square Dance Convention in Spokane, Washing-ton, is cancelled.  Many of us are saddened and disappointed.  This actually might be the only time a National Convention has ever been cancelled!  So sorry! But, good news is ahead!  The 70th National Square Dance Convention in Jackson, Mississippi is already registering folks for 2021!

“It is with deep regret that we officially announce the cancellation of the 69th National Square Dance Convention in Spokane, Washington, June 17–20, 2020,” announced the General Chairmen of the 69th NSDC and the President of the NEC. “This decision is based on our concern for the health and

safety of our attendees. After many hours of deliberations with the National Executive Committee (NEC), 69th NSDC staff and our convention partners in the City of Spokane, we have determined this is best for the welfare of all. “Our Registration Committee will cancel and refund all items including registration, hotel, RV, bus passes, tours, Wednesday Special Event and program books. The 69th NSDC has incurred expenses which have been paid from funds collected. If you would like to donate your Registration fees to help offset these expenses, it would be greatly appreciated. If [so] please send an email to: [email protected]. You DO NOT need to send an email to request a refund.

Thank You for your continuing support and understanding during this unprecedented time. —Don & Cheryl Pruitt, General Chairman, 69th NSDC, and Louis & Nancy Friedlander, President, NEC

Sounds like a fabulous event to look forward to. The City with Soul—Jackson, Mississippi—is the place to be June 23-26, 2021. Plan on a full and exciting convention schedule; plenty of delicious food, soulful music and great sightseeing/tours in Jackson with the High Flyers!  You can register yourself or I can register

you in our block of rooms close to the Convention Center. In the meantime, be safe everyone, stay healthy, and be positive!—Pamela Bailis

Sierra Hillbillies We’re having our meetings now via ZOOM and finding it a very effective way to get together during this forced separation! Here’s President Angie Messina chairing our meeting! We Hillbillies are turning the tables and lending a hand to some of the local restaurants in Santa Clarita who have sponsored our fundraisers in the past. We’re scheduling drive-by pick-ups of pre-ordered meals and thus giving our club members an opportunity to safely connect and wave at one another. We’re hopeful that supporting them during this trying time will mean as much as their support of our activity has meant to us in the past! Dances and Parks & Recreation Department classes are on hold, and we are eagerly awaiting word that it is safe to get back to dancing and that our venues are open. We’re looking forward to that day and hope you are all staying safe and healthy until we see you in a square once again.Valley Trailers

As Valley Trailer’s ASqD representative, our club hopes that everyone is remaining at home doing what is necessary to remain healthy. For those in other circumstances, we hope that you will be able to return to the square dancing community as soon as possible.

In addition to following federal and state guidelines, some members are doing virtual dancing, sewing masks and other volunteer activities that will not impact their health. For those that are not handy sewing, I found two sites that manufactured square dance apparel; while they are not sewing clothing, they have converted to making masks. Please see below:

Rhythm Creations: [email protected]; 4800 W. 34th St. #B-5, Houston, TX 77092-6666. While I have never ordered from this company, I did order two masks for myself on April 11th and I am awaiting delivery to my home.

many, many years, and you won’t want to miss her lovely round dances either. Our final dance next year on Jan. 23rd will be extra special, so mark your calendars now as you won’t want to miss it. Information will be out there with the many details. Check out our website: www.therustlers.net or on Facebook.

Shirts 'N Skirts Because we are practicing "social distancing," we not able to meet face-to-face, but we have managed to keep in touch with Shirts 'N Skirts' members through various means: we have been exchanging Jokes, Inspirational Sayings, Recipes, other important information and tips to protect ourselves--using our Club website and email messages. One of our newer members volunteered to do Grocery Shopping for anyone in our club who lives within a 10-mile radius from Disneyland. She also offered to do Wellness Check phone calls for our members who are living alone. Her giving spirit is an inspiration for all of us! Our Scrip Coordinator has offered to have people come to his house to fulfill their gift card needs.

D? Is there helpful information about filing club Federal and State tax returns?

These are hard times and the United States Department of the Treasury is very busy. I have heard that it is difficult to even get on the website to file the Federal Form 990N. Please keep trying until you can get through.

THE IRS AND WHY WE ARE ALL RELATEDClub income is tax free when revenue is received from club members only,

such as dues, fundraisers and dances. All club members in ASqD are associated mem-bers of ALL clubs. Therefore, income from most of your dances, are from club mem-bers. Unaffiliated dancer admission are considered revenue from the public. This in-come becomes taxable for amounts received in excess of $1000.

FILING TAX RETURNSIt is vitally important that every club file their tax returns, and use their own

Federal and California Identification Numbers. The tax returns are Federal Form 990N and a California Form 199N. There are no fees to file these returns, just make sure you are on the IRS and FTB website. Once you have established your identity fil-ing a form 990N, (by answering personal questions) you can file returns year after year as long as you are using the same computer.

Please note when filing the Federal information, the Organization’s Legal Name is the ASSOCIATED SQUARE DANCERS and the DBA is your CLUB NAME. When filing the California return, the Organization’s Legal Name is your CLUB NAME. These are different.

Tired of the same old bad news day after day lately? Let’s see if we can change that for you!

San Diego Square Dance Association is offering a Special Travel Price for this period of time that we cannot travel! From now through 6/30/2020 you can register for the San Diego 70th Fiesta de la Cuadrilla for just $41 (regular pre-sale price is $45, or $50 at the door) for this 3-day event. You will not find this spectacular price on our registration form. All you need to do is cross out the $45 price and write in “I want to take advantage of the ‘can’t travel’ price” or just write in $41. The event is being held in historical and beautiful Balboa Park November 6–8, 2020. For less than $14/day you’ll dance to callers Darryl Lipscomb, Jet Roberts, Steve Moore, and round dance to Milo & Cinda Molitoris, Mary & Bob Townsend-Manning, and Bill & Beth Davenport, and Saturday night clogging with Russ & Leah Hunsacker. Square dancing will be through level C2 and rounds will be through phase 6. In addition, there’ll be lots more to do and see including a Saturday night performance by the Heritage Dancers, an inexpensive morning brunch, and picnic dinner Saturday evening.Hotel information is on the web site. Follow the link at http://www.sdsda.org/fiesta.html, click on the Registration Form link. If there is anything you might have questions about, there is contact information available. —Robert Swee, Fiesta de la Cuadrilla Promotion Chair

Square up Fashions: [email protected]; 4143 Avenida De La Plata, Oceanside, CA 92056; (760) 631-0080. I have ordered square dance clothing from them, and they are very dependable. Recently I ordered masks for myself and my son. We are now waiting delivery.

All of us are looking forward to the time that we can return to this wonderful activity in a safe manner. Yellow rocks to all.—Marlene LovettWestern Weavers Instead of celebrating our graduating students, having our annual pancake breakfast or playing games at our club picnic (and of course, dancing), everything has been put on hold like everywhere else. Our new president, John Garcia, took over the office from Scott Summers on March 1 after Scott took a job in the Bay Area. Scott’s wife, Glendy, and their daughter will be joining him soon. The Weavers will miss them and wish them well and look forward to their visits. John’s first board “meeting” was via email as he was on a Panama Canal cruise from New Orleans to San Diego when the pandemic was really starting to affect things. The board voted to cancel dances and postpone classes through May. Then, at a later meeting, voted to cancel all activities through August, with hopes of starting up in September. Club members are understanding and continue to remain healthy. We are fortunate that our restaurant partner has continued to accept our fun-draising coupons. The club receives 10 percent of the total sale whenever the voucher is presented. The Western Weavers would like to thank Coral Café for its continued support.

Hello Everybody!!I was so looking forward to walking out on a stage, being handed a micro-

phone and being able to see the dancers. I particularly want to yell “Hello Everybody, I’m Back!” and hear your supportive response. I want to thank the square dance com-munity for all of their moral support during our recovery from the car accident that Alan and I were in. I was badly injured and for weeks there was a cheery get well card in every mail delivery. There were serious cards, funny cards, pretty cards and all of them gave me the support needed to fight my way back to health. Cards came from Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, and San Diego Counties of Southern California and from other parts of the country. There were cards from dancers, callers and cuers, and some people sent more than one card as the weeks passed. There were flowers and chocolates and even a Barbershop Quartet to serenade me on Valentine’s Day. It brought me to tears and the square dance crooners demanded bragging rights for that.

It’s very difficult to explain to nondancers what it means to be in the square dance community. The beauty of the dance, the discussions during the breaks, the hassles to keep the club always running smoothly, reading the Open Squares and the Blue Book and attending square and round dance classes. Also, going to ASqD meetings and events and traveling to Nationals. It’s wonderful to be on the ASqD

Clubs that have not filed their tax returns for three years will automatically lose their non-profit status. It is non arguable and reinstatement costs $600.00.

A Square D BoardBoard and an honor to do all of the work, planning and implementing projects, and brainstorming for our future. You all must know how much I love it.

How do you explain to the “outsiders” the love and community we share? It took over 15 people to take care of me and most of them were dancers. Dancers did amazing things for me. They came and physically took care of me, shopped for groceries, cooked and served, brought lunch and dinner, found resources necessary for my care, provided medical equipment such as walkers and a wheelchair. They also lent an ear for my teary descriptions of the accident. I was motivated to be strong because my community cared about me and wanted me back on the dance floor and in the ASqD boardroom.

And a pandemic took it all away. The ASqD Board has resumed board meetings electronically (thank you

ZOOM). We are currently discouraging any visitations between dancers and any plans to congregate in the near future. We want us all to shelter in place and par-ticipate in the solution and not spread the disease. Please take care of yourselves now. In the future the ASqD board will be here to help the resurgence of our special world. Let us look forward to resuming hall rentals and caller bookings and classes starting. I hope to hear dancers marveling over how many calls they remember and complaining about how many calls they forgot. In the meantime keep in touch with everyone. Go to the virtual dances, and see many of the dancers in the Zoom boxes and participate in virtual board and club meetings. Make sure that all members are safe and cared for. I am now so looking forward to announcing that we are all back. I hope to welcome you to a gigantic square dance filled with dancers, callers, and cuers. It will happen when it is safe to see each other again. Please be well and stay well.—Fredi Levitt, Vice President

It is especially sweet to remem-ber the 57th annual Sweetheart Ball this year from our current perspective! Diane Isaacs welcomed us, call-ers Johnny Preston and Romney Tan-nehill entertained us, the raffle

opened our wallets, and we thanked our most dedicated workers! Good Times!! We’re all looking forward to the return of our happy dancing days. Let’s keep the faith and make it happen!
