June Dairy Month, an annual celebration that beganin 1937, is traditionally a time to re ect on dairy foodsand the industry that makes it possible. It was createdas a way to help distribute extra milk when cows startedon pasture in the summer months. Today, its rich historycontinues, with communities, companies and people fromall over the country observing June Dairy Month in a va-riety of ways. In 2012, Midwest Dairy is celebrating dairyfarmers commitment to producing fresh, wholesome andnutritious milk with fewer resources fostering healthypeople, communities and planet, and meeting the foodneeds of a growing global population.

Healthy people Nutrient-rich dairy foods are one of the most eco-nomical sources of nutrition. In fact, few foods deliverdairys powerhouse of nutrients in such an affordableappealing and readily available way. The 2010 DietaryGuidelines for Americans encourages children and adultsnine years and older to enjoy three servings of low-fat orfat-free milk, cheese or yogurt every day. And at about 25cents per glass, milk provides one of the richest sourcesof well-absorbed calcium in the American diet.Even withall of the time constraints that come along with summeractivities, it is important to remember to have nutritiousmeals throughout the day. Midwest Dairy registered dieti-tian, Stephanie Cundith recommends the Orange CreamChiller, a delightful refresher loaded with calcium and vi-tamin C, to start off the day. Mozzarella Pepper Salsa isa nutrient-rich and colorful recipe that makes for a lightsnack. Add some dairy to dinner by letting your slowcooker do the work with Pulled Pork Soft Tacos toppedwith shredded low-fat Colby Jack cheese.

Healthy communities Americas heartland from North Dakota to Arkan-sas is home to more than 9,500 dairy farms and thepeople behind the products dairy farmers. U of M Extension Soil specialist John Lamb and Dan Kaiser offered some dis-cussion recently about the status of nitrogen fertilizer already applied on elds last fall or earlier this spring. The rst concern was dry fall soil conditions where fall anhydrous ammonia was applied. Now, heavy rainfall events in some areas raise

questions about nitrogen loss by leaching or denitri cation. Assessing leaching or denitri cation problems: In elds with tile drainage, where water has not been running from the tile, nitrogen may have moved deeper in the soil pro le, but it will likely still be available for plant use. Here there is not likely enough water to cause the anaerobic conditions needed for denitri cation to occur. If the tile line is draining water, then there is a chance that the soil is waterlogged. There may be some chance of denitri cation. If water is standing and soil temperatures are greater than 50 degrees, then denitri cation can and will occur. For sandy soils, with heavy rain events, there could be some leaching loss. For sandy soil the recommendation is to split the nitrogen into two or more applications to reduce the

potential for loss, with the largest portion applied in later applications. Assessing the amount of available nitrogen: There are two tools left at this time of the growing season to determine whether to apply more nitrogen to a grow-ing corn crop under non-irrigated conditions. The rst is the pre-side dress nitrate-nitrogen test, developed at Iowa State University. A one-foot sample is used. Re-searchers in Iowa were able to use this test to estimate an amount of nitrogen to apply. Minnesota trials showed that if the pre-sidedress nitrogen test for nitrate-ni-trogen concentration was greater than 20 ppm, no extra nitrogen was needed. This tool is NOT reliable in Minnesota for recommending an amount of supplemental nitrogen fertilizer to apply. The second tool is U of M Extensions Supplemental Nitrogen Worksheet for Corn. This decision aid is for situations when all of the nitrogen fertilizer was ap-plied pre-plant, either in the fall or spring. It was not developed to determine nitro-gen rates in a split-nitrogen program. Many farmers in our area use split nitrogen application practices. Good judgment is still important when using this decision aid. The worksheet should be used in June while you have sidedress application options available. Each answer is weighted on how it affected nitrogen in the soil.

    1. When was the nitrogen applied? Points listed for answer selected.a. Four inches deep in fall; soil temperatures above 50 degrees (5 points)b. Four inches deep in fall; soil temperatures below 50 degrees (4 points)c. Four inches deep in fall with N-Serve; soil temps above 50 degrees (4 points)d. Four inches deep in fall; with N-Serve; soil temps below 50 degrees (3 points)e. Early spring (late March or April) (3 points)f. Early May (2 points)

    2. What was the predominant spring (May) soil condition?a. Normal or drier than normal (1 point)b. Wetter than normal (3 points)c. There was (or is) water standing in elds (4 points)

    3. How does the crop look?a. Taller than 12 to 16 inches but chlorotic (pale, yellow) (5 points)b. Shorter than 12 to 16 inches, but chlorotic (3 points)c. Shorter than 12 to 16 inches; normal green color (2 points)d. Taller than 12 to 16 inches; normal green color (1 point) Interpretation: Total the points. With a score of 7 points or less, your current nitrogen program is doing ne. With a score of 10 or more, supplemental fertilizer is recommended at a rate of 40 to 70 lbs. of N per acre, depending on the situation. In most cases 40 to 50 lbs. N per acre is plenty. A score of 8 or 9 falls into a gray area and it is recommended that you recalculate the worksheet in a week the corn height/color will most likely change. The re-evaluation option is only viable as long as you have side-dressing options. Obviously height will need to be considered with planting date and emergence. With good conditions, we might expect corn to be 15 to 18 inches tall with 8 leaves by 3 to 4 weeks after emergence. A new leaf would emerge about every 3 days. This year the state of Minnesota has run the whole gamut of soil moisture conditions. The effect of these conditions on the N available for corn growth will very across the state. The use of the U of MN Supplemental Nitrogen Worksheet for Corn is a useful tool to determine if there is a need for addition N application to corn in some situations. NOTE: Keep an eye out for insect problems in the second crop of alfalfa.

    Is the nitrogen still there?

National Dairy Month started out as National Milk Month in 1937 as a way to promote milk drinking. It was created to stabilize the dairy demand when production was at a surplus, but it has developed into

an annual tradition that celebrates the contributions the dairy industry has made to the world. After the National Dairy Council stepped in to pro-mote the cause, the name soon changed to "Dairy Month." N a t i o n a l

Dairy Month (June) is a great way to start the summer with 3-Every-Day of nutrient-rich dairy foods. From calcium to potassium, dairy products such as milk contain nine essential nutrients that may help better manage your weight, and reduce your risk for high blood pressure, osteoporosis and certain cancers. With protein to help build and re-pair the muscle tissue of active bodies and vitamin A to help maintain healthy skin, dairy products are a natural nu-trient powerhouse. Those are just a few of the reasons you should celebrate dairy produc-tion, not just in June, but all year long. In the Midwest, dairy farms and families often open their gates to visi-tors for breakfasts and tours, while grocery stores and other businesses feature dairy products during the month. America's heartland from North Dakota to Arkansas is home to more than 11,000 dairy farms and the people behind the products: dairy farmers. And while these farms may differ, dairy farmers share a passion for their livelihoods and producing wholesome, nutritious dairy products for people of all ages to enjoy. Did you ever think about what goes into that glass of milk, bowl of ice cream or piece of cheese? Each dairy farm has a unique story to tell. In North Dakota, you have a chance to see a family farm in action on Sat-urday, June 23. The Holle families of Kenton and Bobbie Jo, Andrew and Jenni, James and Michael Holle of the Northern Lights Dairy, Mandan, will host "Breakfast on the Farm." Drive on out to the dairy or catch a bus in Mandan. June also is the month of dairy royalty. Are you aware that the North Dakota dairy princess program, initi-ated in 1946, is the longest-running program in the U.S.? The princess, who serves as a goodwill ambassador for the state's dairy farmers, makes media appear-ances, talks with children about be-ing healthy through consuming dairy products every day, and visits with

Celebrate dairy monthconsumers in various settings from county fairs to school visits to helpthem understand the dedication of North Dakota's dairy farmers to pro-ducing wholesome and delicious dairy products, and their commitment to the land and their animals. Our reigning princess is RachaelRott from Anamoose. She will be passing her crown during the 66th an-nual coronation held June 23 in Bis-marck. Other examples of dairy promo-tion in your area include Fuel Up to Play 60 in grades K-12. Or, in this era of social media, check out the Dairy Makes Sense blog, the many contribu-tions to Twitter and Facebook, and themilk mustache billboards. And who isn't familiar with the most copied ad ever: "got milk?" One of the greatest challenges ofthe next generation will be provid-ing nutritious, affordable food to aglobal population expected to grow to nine billion by 2050. Dairy is part of the solution. Not only are dairy prod-ucts, such as milk, cheese and yogurt, nutrient-rich, they also are being pro-duced using fewer resources, and are helping foster healthy people, healthycommunities and a healthy planet. And at about 25 cents per glass, milkprovides one of the richest sources of well-absorbed calcium in the Ameri-can diet. The health of the dairy farmers'checkbook is not as encouraging. The end of May marked ve straight months of declining income and high feed costs. Because feed represents 50 to 60 percent of the cost to produce milk, this is not good news for dairy farmers. While most of us just see the cost at the retail shelf and assume pro t, dairy producers have nowhere to pass on their costs. So when you see that dairy farm family member, thank him or her for his or her spirit and con-tribution to our health.

Here are some dairy facts: 98 percent of all North Dakotadairy farms are family owned. Dairy is the fourth largest ag-ricultural business in North Dakota, generating $49 million a year. North Dakota dairy farms pro-duce more than 44.7 million gallonsof milk annually. Typically, milk takes two days toget from the farm to the grocery store. The dairy industry reduced itscarbon footprint by 60 percent be-tween 1944 and 2007. The U.S. dairy industry con-tributes only two percent of the totalgreenhouse emissions and has made amajor effort to be even greener in thefuture. Here's a cold glass of milk in asalute to the makers of the most nu-tritious food in the world: dairy prod-ucts.

Anyone who is involved with the rental market for Iowa farmland knows that rental rates have been pushed signi cantly higher by the favorable corn and soybean prices farmers have enjoyed since 2010. This trend continued in 2012. Results from the most recent Iowa State Univer-sity Extension and Outreach rental rate survey esti-mated the 2012 average cash rent for Iowa corn and soybean land at $252 per acre, an increase of $38 per acre or 18 percent from last year. This is the largest one-year increase since the statewide survey was started in 1994, said William Edwards, ISU Extension economist. Average rents were higher in all nine crop reporting districts, with increases ranging from $57 per acre in north central Iowa to $16 per acre in south central Iowa. The $57 per acre increase in the north central dis-trict represents a 26 percent increase; the south cen-tral $16 per acre increase, a nine percent increase. The 2012 increase tops the 2011 $30 per acre increase which now stands as the second largest in-crease recorded. High quality land showed the largest increase in rents. Estimated rents for land in the high third of each county increased by an average of 20 percent, but estimated rents on low third quality row crop land increased by only 15 percent. In many counties, respondents indicated that typical rents were $400 to $500 per acre or more for the higher quality land, Edwards said. Typical rental rates for land growing oats and hay also were reported, as well as rental rates for grazing pasture and corn stalks. This year rental rates for al-lowing hunters on farmland also were included. The intent of the Iowa State survey is to report typical rents in force, not the highest nor the lowest values heard through informal sources. Rental values were estimated by asking more than 3,000 people fa-miliar with the land market what they thought typical rates were in their county. The number of responses received this year was 1,419. Of the total responses, 37 percent came from farmers, 28 percent from land-owners, 16 percent from professional farm managers, 16 percent from lenders and three percent from other professionals.

Farmland rental rates show continued strength in 2012
