MY TRACTORWith thousands of readers, there has to be at least two people who

are interested in tractor articles. So I need just one person besidemyself and we are good to go!!e workhorse of my small tractor eet, is my second oldest, bu

at 32 years old, it is still going strong and is my go-to tractor fothe heavy work. Its the one that ventures o of the woods road toblaze new trails and to haul out wood. It is also the only tractorthat has the space to carry the many items needed for the hard

jobs.My chainsaw sits in a case out on one rear fender, while an axe

sits inside the cabin beside my seat. Outside on the loader, I havea bracket to hold my peavey for moving logs or trees around ifneeded. Until I nd a logging winch or wench, I have a 20 plusfoot hunk of chain hanging o brackets on the other side of theloader. Also hanging o the loader are lopping shears for trimmingbranches (instead of using chainsaw), a two-ton manual winch fohauling me (hopefully) out of places I shouldnt have been, and ashovel (for self burial if nothing else works)!!

Inside the cab, I have a hard hat with face shield, that I shoulduse but never do, two or three pairs of gloves, a small maul-likehammer (protection from coyotes and angry wife), numerousbolts and pins, tools and a fairly short eight foot chain, along withgas and chain oil for my chainsaw.

e tractor started out life weighing a little over 4,000 lbs butnow weighs somewhere in the vicinity of 120,000 lbs and canbarely move (just kidding)!!It is amazing, when I think about it. With all of the problems in the

world both near and far, why would I write about a tractor?? Welfor one thing, tractors arent depressing!! One of the great thingabout our publications is that with possibly a rare exception, allof the news is positive. And believe me, that can be very hard tond today. While there is nothing wrong with getting the realnews on life, a continuous barrage of bad news is depressing andso people begin to feel hopeless about the future and that there isnothing that can be done.

Fortunately, our publications are just loaded with people andorganizations being very busy trying to solve at least some of theworlds problems and believe me, that is a good thing. Changealmost never occurs out of depression, but rather hope andinspiration. 800

    TWEEK

    WeekJune 3 - 9, 2012The United Nations declared 2012 to be the

International Year of Sustainable Energy for All. This year

is a valuable opportunity to raise awareness about the

importance of increasing sustainable access to energy,

energy efficiency, and renewable energy at the local,

    national, regional and international levels.

Clean Air Day (June 6th) - raises awareness and

encourages action on clean air and climate changeissues. Canadians can show their commitment by

participating in activities that contribute to cleaner air,

healthier communities and a better quality of life for all.

When you use public transit, cycle, walk and rollerblade,

you can reduce your personal emissions, save money

used on fuel, contribute to your personal health and

    much more.

World Oceans Day (June 8th) - is a time to remember

the critical role of oceans worldwide. This international

celebration has grown from a ripple into a tidal wave of

awareness about the importance of our oceans.

Rivers to Oceans Week (June 8th-12th) - an opportunityto work together to create an understanding of Canada's

watersheds, our connection to fresh and salt-waterenvironments and what everyone can do to protect andkeep watersheds healthy for people and wildlife.

Commuter Challenge (June 3rd-9th) - a nation-wideevent that promotes friendly competition amongorganizations and cities to see who can get the highestpercentage of employees out of single occupancy

There are many ways to take action on protecting andpreserving our natural environment. It is important torecognize that every effort counts, big or small.

Green TipsTrees are essential to the planet and to humans. Planta tree and reap in the many benefits!

Get a green bin and start collecting organic waste.

Avoid waste by using reusable cloths and rags insteadof paper towels to clean.

Instead of using chemicals and paper towels to washyour windows, try 125 ml vinegar (1/2 cup) and 1Lwater (4 cups) and a squeegee.

If space is limited, try growing organic vegetables incontainers or window boxes.

Have a garage sale to help recycle your unwanteditems. Someone's trash is another's treasure.

Instead of throwing something in the garbage, recycleit instead! Old homework papers, cardboards andnewspapers are examples of things you can easilyrecycle.

Donate electronic equipment to specific recyclinggroups or recycle them. This will help reduce pressureon landfills.

When buying wooden fencing and garden furniture, consider whether the wood is from a well-managedforest. Deforestation is a serious problem in some areasof the world leading to loss of topsoil and flooding, amongst other problems.

When boating, avoid stirring up bottom sediment withpropellers. Keep personal watercraft out of shallowareas that are critical habitat for spawning fish, aquaticplants, and aquatic invertebrates.

Your appliances need a tune-up too; clean all filters andcoils.

When replacing hard-to-reach light bulbs, switch toenergy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs, which dontneed to be changed for up to seven years.

Use your window coverings to help warm or cool yourhouse.

Make your home more energy efficient throughimproved insulation, caulking and weather-stripping.

Install and use a programmable thermostat. For every1 you lower your thermostat, you can save 2% on your

heating bill. When buying a new appliance, choose anenergy-efficient one.

Kids! Energy efficiency can be practiced at home, atschool and during recreational activities. This may beas simple as turning off the lights when leaving a room,or bicycling to school instead of asking mom or dad fora ride. Encouraging energy efficiency reduces the use offossil fuels, thus reducing emissions of harmfulpollutants into the Earths atmosphere.

Use potpourri instead of aerosol-based sprays.

Compost your leaves and brush. Burning them willincrease carbon dioxide emissions.

Buy a push lawn mower. Its good exercise and reducescarbon dioxide emissions.

Make sure your car is properly tuned up and your tires

are at the right pressure to ensure optimal fuelefficiency.

    Encourage carpooling when possible!

AIRUse a broom rather than a water hose to clean walkways, driveways and sidewalks.

Collect and use your rainwater for your lawn and plants. Its free and better for plants.

Avoid cleaners containing phosphates. When they getinto rivers and lakes they cause algae blooms, robbing the

TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY

    THAT IS THE QUESTION?

Now that the risk of killing a frost is nally over, its likely thatthere will be a mad rush to the garden centers and the householdbudgets will again be in a perilous state. If you are fortunateenough to have a deer proof fence, the sky is the limit, if not, thenits wise to pick as many deer proof items as possible.

ere are a number of interesting plants and bushes that seemto be either very low on our white tailed friends dietary list, orhappily, o their list all together. For several years, despite theregular appearance of these beasties, I have grown the followingwith great success:Lavenders; Forsythia; bush and vine Honeysuckles; Epimedium

a low perennial with delightful pink, yellow or red delicateblooms, followed by heart shaped leaves that turn a beautiful deepred color as they mature; Deutzia, a shrub with delicate fragrant

blossoms and pale green leaves; Fox Gloves; Burning Bush; LadyMantle; Barberry; Caragana; Peonies; Hawthorns and assortedClematis. So far the Wisteria has remained in tact however, nowthat it is trailing temptingly over the fence I am not sure of itsfuture.

No matter how rm I am in my resolve to abide by the DontFeed the Deer, concept, the fact remains that if we garden at allwe are providing food for them ... anyway, there are plants thatare simply too beautiful to pass up and there is protection forthem. Its wise to keep these purchases within reasonable boundsnamely the numbers that one can easily spray on a regular basis. My dentist recently suggested that since deer avoid the Narcissu

family, (Daodils and the like), that a blend of the faded bloomswith a few of the leaves might be a good base for the next miracle

repellant. I shall have a go, since it is time to cut the blossomsdown anyway, I shall mix in a little oil or beaten egg to help themixture adhere to the leaves and Hey Presto, we might just strikegold; enough perhaps to pay for a really fancy lling!!

While you are at it, cut down the entire blossom bearing stemsfrom tulips and crocus, but compost them as they are the #1favorite food. By taking o the spent blooms the plant then wilput all its energies into strengthening the bulb, instead of workinghard on producing a nice fat seed pod. e results will providemany more owers next year.

Happy gardening, even if it means scaling your diet to wienersand beans! 805

CBZ NEWSCherry Brook Zoo (CBZ) has twoSiberian Tigers who are members ofthe international conservation programcalled Species Survival Program (SSP).e aim of SSP is to increase the captivepopulations and improve genetic diversity of EndangeredSpecies. Your zoo has a long history of SSP work. Other zooresidents currently on SSP are all the monkeys and the snowleopard.

Siberian Tigers, the largest of the big cats, are endangered dueto loss of habitat, and prey plus poaching for the illegal blackmarket industry that supplies Asian tradition medicine. Eightspecies of tigers once existed. ree species are now extinct andremembered in your zoos Vanished Kingdom Park.

Tiger Pam is age 23 and Nyla is age six. Many visitors haveasked about Pam and her current condition. e longest livingtiger in a zoo was 25 years old. Pam obviously is showing herage. CBZ does not believe in euthanasia based simply on agePam is under veterinarian care. She has produced young and isa retired SSP tiger. Pams male ospring, Baikal, who grew up atyour zoo is at the top of the SSP stud list for Siberian Tigers. Hehas gone on to produce his own ospring thus carrying on Pams

40 YEARS LATERAs odd it seems to me, it has been 40 years since my high schoolgraduation. It does not seem possible, but a simple subtractionconrms the truth of it: 2012-1972 = 40 years! Yikes.

What was happening way back then? Pierre Elliot Trudeauwas prime minister, Richard Nixon was the president of theUnited States (Watergate was a couple of years down the road)and Richard Hateld was premier of New Brunswick (and sowas the Bricklin). A new house cost in the $25,000 - $30,000range. Gas was 36 cents a gallon (which would be approximately8 cents per liter except we werent using the metric systemthen). New Brunswick o cially became Canadas only bilinguaprovince - and removed e Picture Province from our licenseplates. e number one movie of the year was e Godfatherthe number one song was Don McLeans American Pie and All

in the Family was the number one TV show (yes, we did havetelevision then). M.A.S.H. premiered in 1972. For sports fansthat was year Paul Henderson scored the goal of the century inthe Canada vs Soviet Union hockey Summit series. It was alsothe year 11 Israeli athletes were killed in the Munich SummerOlympics terrorist attack.

In the midst of all that, a grand total of 38 Grade 12 studentsat Hampton High School approached graduation. Amazinglywhen we sat down to plan a 40th reunion, with one or twoexceptions we know where all 38 are today or can nd out fairlyeasily. One of the benets of a small community. So we will gettogether for an evening to catch up a little and brag about ourgrandkids and maybe rekindle some of that youthful energy andanticipation of what life had in store for us as we looked ahead

at age 18. Age is just a number. True terror is to wake up onemorning and discover that your high school class is running thecountry.~ Kurt Vonnegut. 801
