Welcome to the 2006 Summer Enrichment program! Classes are being held at Selzer School Monday through Friday.

Unless otherwise noted, grade level refers to the grade going into next year.

♦ School ReadineSS PRogRam (Kindergarten) This course provides an excellent preschool experience for students going into Kindergarten in September. Students will develop social skills, including cooperating, helping, and listening. Students will listen to age appropriate literature, tell stories, and participate in discussions. Students will see how reading and writing are useful before they enter school in order to learn words, names, and sounds. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ SToRY hoUR (Grades K-1) Do you like listening to fascinating stories? If so, this is the place for you! Each day students will listen to an exciting story, discuss the meaning of the book, and create art work based upon the characters and plot. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ ReadY ReadeRS (Grades 1-3) This course will take students on an exciting literary adventure as they learn skills and techniques they can use to advance their reading. (This is not a remedial course.) (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ FaiRY Tale FanTaSY (Grades K-1) Classic fairy tales come to life in this class. Students will be introduced to new vocabulary and be assisted in the reading process. Each fairy tale adventure will be accompanied by an activity, song, or art project. The fairy

tale will include each of the students’ own writing and illustrations. Upon completion of the class, each student will get their own copy of a fairy tale that the class created. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ FUn WiTh Science (Grades 1-2) This class will provide students with an opportunity to engage in a variety of age appropriate

science activities and/or experiments. Students will participate in hands-on exploration in the areas of Understanding Living Things (including plants and animals), Exploring the Five

Senses, Weather and the Seasons, Magnets, and the Ocean. There will be opportunities for integrating verbal skills, problem-solving skills, and writing skills while students

explore these various topics. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ inTRodUcTion To TheaTRe (Grades 1-2)This class for young children will introduce the art, creativity, and excitement of musical theatre, puppetry, theater games, costumes, make-up, dancing, and acting. Students will actively participate in individual and group projects that will lend to beginning theatrics. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ FiTneSS FUn (Grades 1-2)Fitness is a lifelong goal that begins in childhood. This class is designed to teach young children the importance of developing a healthy and fit body through exercise and nutrition. Students will participate daily in fun exercise and movement experiences to music and gain awareness of

nutritional information and concepts. Student will have several opportunities to prepare “healthy snacks” throughout this class. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00 THIS COURSE IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN WITH ANY FOOD ALLERGIES.

♦ KIDS’ CUISINE (Grades 2-6) Students will need an apron as they try new recipes daily while practicing kitchen safety. At the end of the

course children will have a collection of recipes and enough “know-how” to be a big help in the kitchen. Each class will be limited to 12 students. THIS COURSE IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN WITH ANY FOOD ALLERGIES.$70.00 + $30.00 MATERIALS FEE = $100.00 Grade 2 & 3 at 9:00 a.m., Grade 4 & 5 at 10:00 a.m. and Grade 5 & 6 at 11:00 a.m.

♦ amazing maTh (Grades 1-5) Find out how much fun math can be! Learn and review strategies that will help you improve your math skills. Time will be split between practice and games. Students grouped by age if possible. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ JoURnaliSm (Grades 3-5 and 6-8)Students will learn aspects of journalism that will enable them to design their own newspaper. Students will work on articles, artwork, photography, and layout for their publication. In this course, students will build upon their writing, listening, and speaking skills, as well as their ability to work with their fellow student journalists. This hands-on class is filled with fun-filled activities for youngsters to enjoy. The best part about the course is the newspaper which will reflect each student’s creative talents. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ aRTS and cRaFTS (Grades 1-8)This course is geared for students who enjoy arts and crafts. The students in this class will explore a variety of art mediums. Students will have the opportunity to work on various projects enabling them to increase their own creative potential. Students will get to work with craft materials and supplies of various kinds to create unique and original works. All activities will be geared to the ability level and interest of the stu-dents in the class. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00 + $20.00 MATERIALS FEE = $90.00

♦ AUthor’S ADvENtUrE (Grades 1-3, 4-5 and 6-8)Here is your opportunity to develop your writing skills! In this writing workshop, we will be composing descriptive, narrative, persuasive, and creative writing pieces. We will produce a book of all of our final drafts to take home and share with family and friends! (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ FUn WiTh PhonemicS (Grades 1-2)Remember how to sound out words? This course, which consists of listening activities, rhyming, games, poems, blending, and analysis of basic word sounds, will help children tackle the process of breaking down words, leading to better reading skills. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ WorD ProblEm DEtECtIvES (Grades 3-5) Become a word problem detective! Learn the strategies needed to help you decode the mysteries of word problems. Time will be split between practice and games. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ elemenTaRY Science (Grades 3-4 and 5-8) This discovery based course is for students interested in Science. Areas of interest include Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Students will participate in hands-on exploration of many scientific theories, principals and laws involved in various fields of Science. Students will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of age appropriate science activities or experiments. Students will be grouped by age if possible. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00 + $10.00 MATERIALS FEE = $80.00

♦ GEt movING AND GEt GroovING (Grades 3-8) Here is an opportunity to explore the human body and fitness the fun way! Age appropriate games and activities will be planned to show how exciting exercise

can be! See how your body works and why it’s so important to keep it healthy. Let’s get moving and grooving this summer though running, playing, games, strength training, and even yoga. Open up to a lifetime of physical fitness!! The best part is the children can use their own creativity to make their own exercise plan and activities. Students will be grouped by age if possible. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ JUnioR TheaTRe WoRkShoP 1 (Grades 3-6)This class will be a total immersion adventure into the magical world of theatre through dramatic exercises and improvisational exploration. Students will have the opportunity to learn skills that will help them on stage, including presence, expression, focus, projection, and spontaneity. Students will also develop skills that will help them in life, including self-confidence, discipline, integrity, commitment, and teamwork. Children will learn and practice different acting, speaking, confidence, and self-esteem building skills while participating in exciting music and movement, improvisation, theatrical make-up costuming, vocal, and performing exercises. The class will conclude with a scripted performance in which parents/guardians will be invited to attend. Please note this is a two hour course. (Time to be determined) $140.00

♦ FUN WIth vIDEo (Grades 3-5 and 6-8) This course introduces participants to hands-on activities with a video camera. Students will create video autobiographies from home photographs, demonstrate how-to videos on camera, and star in their own mu-sic video. Students will learn various roles including talent, director, and camera crew. Each student will take home a videotape of his/her activities upon completion of the program. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00 + $10.00 MATERIALS FEE = $80.00

♦ comPUTeR enRichmenT 1 (Grades 3-5 and Grades 6-8)Students will be led into the world of technology. Students will be taught keyboarding, basic operational skills, word processing and graphics. Computer software will be used to encourage creativity. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $75.00

♦ comPUTeR enRichmenT 2 (Grades 3-5 and 6-8)This class will present an extension to the tools learned in Computer Enrichment 1. Students will further investigate PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and how to properly use the Internet. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $75.00

♦ inTRodUcTion To Sign langUage (Grades 3-5 and Grades 6-8) This class will introduce students to the world of sign language. Students will learn the history of sign language and explore the vocabulary of everyday words, popular sayings, and songs. In addition, certain categories that will be taught include: the alphabet, family relationships, time and calendar, animals, human body, foods, sports and activities, careers, and numbers.

♦ A NovEl APProACh (Grades 4-6)Do you enjoy reading paperback novels, plays, short stories, and poetry? If so, join us as we read and discuss some exciting literature designed for your age group! Each student will also be

creating a reflection journal where we write our reactions to the literature we have read. Hope to see you there! (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ ANCIENt CIvIlIzAtIoNS: EGyPt, GrEECE, & romE (Grades 4-7)Go back to ancient times and learn about the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. Students will complete many “hands-on” learning activities,

which include playing ancient games, sample a meal from each empire, complete various art activities, develop better writing and comprehension skills, and learn about vocabulary. Student will also act out historical plays for each civilization. THIS COURSE IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN WITH ANY FOOD ALLERGIES. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ mEDIEvAl tImES (Grades 4-7)Discover the past and make Medieval Times come alive by learning about knights, castles, nobles, the Crusades, feudalism and Joan of Arc. Students will develop journal-writing skills and complete a variety of art activities. They include constructing a tapestry, mosaics, family crests and knight shields, story scrolls and make a life size knight! Students will read plays and learn vocabulary. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ inSTRUmenTal mUSic (Grades 4-8) Put your musical skills to use and have fun performing different styles of music in

a group setting. Musical styles will include classical, jazz, rock and Broadway. Want to try a new instrument? Here’s your chance! Each ensemble will rehearse daily. $90.00 per instrument

• Beginner (No experience) ensembles will meet from 10:30-11:00 a.m. daily with lessons from 10:00-10:30 a.m. two or three times a week. On the first day, Monday, June 26, students should report with instruments from 10:30-11:00 a.m. Class schedules will be handed out at this time. • Advanced (3-5 years experience) and Intermediate (1-2 years experience) ensembles will meet from 8:30-9:30 a.m. each day. Lessons will be either from 8:00-8:30 or 9:30-10:00 a.m. two or three times a week. On the first day, Monday, June 26, students should report with instruments from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Class schedules will be handed out at this time. • String ensemble will meet from 10:30-11:00 a.m. daily with lessons from 10:00-10:30 a.m. two or three times a week. ♦ All AboUt mE: my WorlD IN PhotoS (Grades 4-8) Students in this class will bring in copies of their favorite photos and create beautiful scrapbook pages that bring memories to life. Learn how to journal, embellish, and create one-of-a-kind

pages that reflect your personality. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00 + $15.00 MATERIALS FEE = $85.00

♦ JUnioR TheaTRe WoRkShoP 2 (Grades 5-8)This exciting class is designed for the intermediate drama student. This class is designed for the more experienced student who has performed on stage and has a working knowledge of drama terminology. This class will focus on enhancing acting skills, playwriting, lighting and stage terminology, blocking, and improvisation. The class will conclude with a scripted performance which will be written and performed by the students. Parents/guardians will be invited to attend. Please note this is a two hour course. (Time to be determined) $140.00

♦ lEt’S GEt orGANIzED! (Grades 4-8) Need help getting it together? If so, this is the course for you! Learn various methods and strategies for developing study and organizational skills through fun-filled activities.

♦ YoUng PoeTS SocieTY (Grades 6-8) Do you enjoy reading and writing poetry? Join us as we explore poetry from the past and present. We will create individual poetry books where we experiment with different poetic styles and forms.

You can be a poet, so come out and show it! (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ SaT® rEvIEW (Grades 10-12) In this course high school students can get a jump start on the SAT® test. The SAT® test consists of the following sections: Critical Reading, Writing, and Math (including concepts from Algebra 2). Students will review subject matter and prepare for the exam by working on sample SAT® problems. Similar courses cost $900 and more. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) Critical Reading/Writing: $110.00 Math: $110.00

If both Critical Reading/Writing and Math are taken the cost is $200.00

♦ moneYmaking 101 (Grades 6-8) In this course we will cover basic economic terminology and concepts such as supply and demand, interest, pricing strategy, etc. We will learn the basics of investing and how to read the New York

Stock Exchange page in the newspaper. Students will have a fantasy account where they will invest in various stocks and watch how the market works. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ logic PUzzleS (Grades 6-8) Students will learn the strategy behind solving puzzles, developing their analytical and reasoning skills at the same time. They will utilize numerous strategies to generate solutions. They will also

learn how to create their own logic puzzles. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ cheSS FoR BeginneRS (Grades 6-8) Have you always wanted to learn how to play chess, but never had the chance? Join this class and learn the basics: piece movement, combinations, tactics and specific opening strategies. Each class

will end with an opportunity to test your skills and apply what you have learned. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ inTeRmediaTe cheSS (Grades 6-8) Just can’t seem to beat that opponent? Here is the solution! In this class, students will get the op-portunity to study more advanced and specific chess themes such as opening, middle, and endgame

strategies. Tactical and positional play will also be examined as well as discussion about the important balance that chess requires. Each class will end with an opportunity to test your skills and apply what you have learned. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.) $70.00

♦ STRaTegic TeST Taking (Grades 7-8) These courses will focus on improving test taking abilities in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Learn the skills and strategies that can lead to less stressful testing. (9, 10, or 11 a.m.)

♦ enRollmenT is on a first come, first served basis. Unless otherwise noted, grade level refers to the grade going into next year. Class size will be limited by the size of the facility. For bookkeeping purposes, it is requested that separate checks be made for each child registering. Courses may be can-celled for lack of enrollment or staff availability. A refund of tuition will then be made. Where possible, students will be grouped according to age and experience.

♦ TUItIoN rEFUND: Withdrawal may be made before the first day of class. Tuition will be refunded, minus a $5.00 registration fee. No tuition fee will be refunded for any reason after the first class.

♦ trANSPortAtIoN: Parents must provide transportation to and from summer school. Students should arrive and depart from classes with a minimum of waiting.

♦ claSS TimeS indicated cannot be firmly established until enrollment is completed. Classes will take place between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Classes are 55 minutes in duration unless otherwise indicated.

♦ PleaSe RegiSTeR as early as possible. A receipt with the class time and assignment will be sent to you approximately one week before the summer session starts.

♦ medical emeRgencieS: No school nurse will be on staff during the summer sessions. The main office will have class lists with students’ emergency phone numbers. In the event a student becomes ill during class, we will contact the parent/guardian to come and pick up the student.

If a student needs immediate medical attention, we will also call for an ambulance and then notify the parent/guardian of the child.

Enrichment Program: Classes are five (5) days per week, Monday through Friday.Program begins Monday, June 26, 2006 and ends Friday, July 21, 2006
