“John heralded his coming by proclaiming a baptism of
repentance to all the people of Israel; and as John was completing his course, he would say, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. Behold, one is
coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.'”
Acts 13:24-25
“John the Baptist is "more than a prophet." In him, the Holy Spirit concludes his speaking through the prophets. John completes the cycle of prophets begun by Elijah. He proclaims the imminence of the consolation of Israel; he is the
"voice" of the Consoler who is coming.”
CCC 719
This weekend we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist. John is one of only two saints whose birth we celebrate (the other is Mary whose birth we celebrate on September 8). Usually a saints feast is celebrated on the day of their death.
But John’s birth has a symbolic power. His birth, like his life, revolves around and points to Jesus. We do not know the exact date of his birth. Instead, today’s feast is connected to the feast of Jesus birth. We celebrate Jesus birth in in the days following the winter solstice as the light begins to return as days get longer. In contrast, we celebrate John’s birth in the days following the summer solstice as the light begins to fade and the days get shorter. These shorter days remind us of the spiritual principle that John the Baptist taught us, “He [Jesus] must increase, but I must decrease.”

DEACON LINCOLN’S LOG
LITURGICAL MINISTERS
John the Baptist pointed to Jesus with his entire life. Everything in his life was directed to proclaiming the coming of Jesus. In this, he is a model for us. The more we can allow our ego to decrease and allow Jesus to increase, the further along the road of discipleship we travel.
Even in the midst of these beautiful summer months, when Christmas seems far away, we are reminded to “prepare the way of the Lord” by focusing our life on Jesus. He is coming. Christmas is six months away.
Peace,
Dcn. Lincoln A. Wood
T h a n k y o u ! Our breakfast fundraiser was a success because of YOU! Thank you to all of you who helped out that day, we appreciate your help and really enjoy working together! Thank you to all of you who supported us by buying breakfast. We hope you enjoyed the food and visiting with family and friends. We served about 170 people and profited $1133! The proceeds will be used to pay for the Comedy Show on Friday night of the Kraut Festival and for advertising cost for the festival.

Trusting in God This weekend we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist. This young child, born to parents who were thought that having a child was
impossible, grew up to show us how to be disciples of Jesus. John
shared the “Good News” of Jesus’ coming to all who would hear. He
baptized people with water, calling them to repent so that when Jesus
came they could hear his message with a loving heart.
A long time ago I was told, “A child is a gift from God, what they
become is our gift to God.” This sentence has been at the heart of
raising my five children. We have tried very hard to ensure a deep
faith and relationship with Jesus. When my children were younger, we took many camping trips. We have been to twenty-two different
states with the camper. The time with family was so precious, but
equally precious was our time with God. Through nature and Sunday
Masses we were able to teach the children that God’s love isn’t limited
to just our home or our parish.
The kids will tell you of two distinct memories from our trips. One
Sunday we went to Mass in Custer, South Dakota. Outside church was
the CYE (Catholic Youth Expedition) bus. (It is easily identified by the
painting on the outside.) Just before Mass started the priest asked
where people were from. We stood up and said we were from Wisconsin. In the front row was the CYE group from Green Bay, which
included my son’s catechist. No matter where you go to Mass, you will
always find someone you know, Jesus.
The other experience was in Montana. They did not have a priest so
the service was lead by the deacon. After the Communion service the
kids asked what happened? That wasn’t Mass. I explained to them
that what we experienced was the same thing that we do for the
people who live in the assisted living community near our house. When
we bring Jesus to those who can’t attend Mass we are still celebrating
God’s love with them.
Our children know that they are loved. This love results from God
loving them first, which in turn, enables them to love others and to be
loved. As we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist, let’s remember
that God loves us first, so that we can love those around us, most of
all, our children.

“It is Jesus that you seek when you dream of happiness; He is
waiting for you when nothing else you find satisfies you; He is the
beauty to which you are so attracted; it is He who provoked you
with that thirst for fullness that will not let you settle for
compromise; it is He who urges you to shed the masks of a false life;
it is He who reads in your heart your most genuine choices, the
choices that others try to stifle.”
― Pope John Paul II
Households of Discipleship Challenge: This week the children and youth
attending Totus Tuus will focus on the Luminous Mysteries (also called
the Mysteries of Light.)Saint Pope John Paul II added these new
mysteries to the Rosary, filling in the ministerial life of Jesus. As his
quote above states, “It is Jesus that you seek when you dream of
happiness;” take time this week to reflect on the Lumionus Mysteries.
Maybe pray and contemplate one of these mysteries per day. What is
Jesus calling you to do through the mystery to be happy?
What are the Luminous Mysteries?
