ORIENS THEOLOGICAL COLLEGE INAUGURATION OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-20 The Academic year was inaugurated on 1 August 2019. The inaugural Mass was presided over by Bishop Albert Hemrom, Co-Adjutor Bishop of Dibrugarh. The staff and students of all the study houses, special invitees and the Rectors of neighbouring institutions were present. Samuel Kapani, the new Dean and Registrar. Fr. Melvin Parambakatlu was the recipient of the Hubert D’Rosario Award. Independence Day celebration On 15 Aug 2019 we celebrated independence Bishop Thomas Pulloppil presided over the Mass. The Flag-hoisting was done in the corridor of the Auditorium. The Brothers performed some patriotic songs and dance. Bro. Roshan Soreng gave the Independence Day Message. We celebrated teacher’s day on 4 september 2019. Thefelicitation programme was held in the OTC auditiorium at12.00 noon. The student council took the initative andarranged cultural items for the professors. The wholeprogramme was anchored by Bro. Kandula Veeraiah, CMF,and Fr. Mathew Chanikuzhy addressed the gathering with hisinspiring words. All the professors were thanked by thestudents for their valuable service in teaching the students.

The college gave farewell to the fourth year students on 28 september 2019 in the OTC Auditorium.All the outgoing students were welcomed with great love and appreciation for their hard work. Bro.Samuel Naulak anchored the programme and Bro. Mukhim Ricky, OFM cap. shared his feelings onbehalf of everyone. Fr. Raj Kapoor adviced the fourth year students to be effective in their ministryand be firm in their vocation.

Inter-Class Basketball Match

On 2 October 2019 OTC arranged inter-class basket-ball match for the students of different classes at 8.30a.m. Fr. K. D. Joy encouraged the students to incul-cate the spirit of sportmanship which would fosterour character in our priestly life. Dn. Gabriel led usinto the prayer and Dn. Pradeep welcomed thegathering. The second year students won the matchand Fr. Dean congratulated the students.

ANNUAL SEMINAR

On 10 October 2019 OTC conducted the annual seminar atOriens Auditorium on the topic “CHRISTUS VIVIT” whichemphasized the present situation of youth in the church. Fr.Kuriakose Poovathumkudy, the Rector, gave an introduc-tory talk on the topic and highlighted the importance of theyouth in the church . Bro. John Thomas shared his view onhow God called young people in the OT and NT.Bro. Santhosh, MSFS, spoke on the different paths that theyoung people need to follow. Bro. Ekka Amit highlighted thevocational call and the youth ministry in today’s society. Bro.Pehiachanglu Peter summed up the papers as listening to thevoice of Christ and walking in his light. The whole seminarwas moderated by Bro. Haomuonlian Joseph.

SOLO AND EXTEMPORE SPEECH COMPETITION

INTER-COLLEGE BASKETBALL

The students’ council organized solo and extempore speech competitions on 7 November2019 at the college auditorium. The competitions began at 9.00 a.m. Fr. Samuel Kapani,the dean of studies, and other staff members were there to witness it. All the batches tookpart in the competition and brought out their hidden talents.Three sisters, namely, Sr. Agnes, SABS, Sr. Agnes, MSMHC, and Sr. Meena, MSMHC, werethe judges of the competitions. Bro. Jimal P. got the first prize for the extempore whileBros. Kandula Veeriah and Bonomi got the second and third prizes respectively. For thesolo competition, Bro. James L. got the first prize while Bros. John P. and Salgrak Momingot the second and third prizes respectively.

There was an Inter-College Basketball match between Oriensand Sacred Heart Theological college on 8 November 2019 at2.00 p.m. in Oriens Basketball court. Bro. Milton George, thepresident of the students’ council, welcomed the gathering andencourged all to give the best in bringing out their talents.Oriens won the match. Fr. Samuel Kapani thanked the SacredHeart Brothers for their support and friendship.

ANNUAL LECTURE

Oriens theological college organised its annual lecture on 5 March 2020 in OTCauditorium at 9.15 a.m. on the topic “The Laity’s envisioning of their priests in the21st century” delivered by Dr. Catherine Diengdoh. The programme began with aprayer led by Bro. Jerome. Thereafter Fr. Samuel, the Head of the Department,introduced the speaker.

Archbishop John Moolachira along with other staff members and students werepresent for the annual lecture. Dr. Catherine Diengdoh shared her own experienceand highlighted some of the expectations of laity from their priests. They expect themto be prayerful, loving, humble, friendly and available. She also suggested to use themodern techniques and devices to be effective preachers in the church.

BOOK RELEASE

On 26 November 2019 at 7.28 a.m. therewas the release of a book on Hermeneuticsby Dr. Thomas Manjaly. Fr. Samuel Kapaniintroduced the book and Fr. Rectorreleased the book before all the staff andstudents of the college.
