another month has passed in the blink of an eye. Getting the magazine out last month

proved a logistical nightmare with printers delivering a week later than anticipated and having to get as many copies out as possible before the election on the 7th. As it turned out, Labour took a clean sweep in holding Bristol East in Parliament, holding Brislington East and gaining Brislington West in the council elections.

As a result of the delays, this is going to be a June/July issue and it’s possible all monthly issues in future will crossovers like until I am able to get more reliable printers and help delivering. On the latter, I would like to thank those who stepped in to help me deliver such as Jenny, Ed, Perry Hicks and Susan Jones. Thank you in advance too to those who have volunteered to help me around Brislington and to those who took the time to talk to me on the doorsteps about the area and the magazine.

This month we turn to purely Brislington issues with an update from Dave and Val Cobbin on the Wick Road library campaign, some information from Marietta Kirkbride on the Bristol 2015 neighbourhood Green arts Programme (if there was a vote, I’d be biased and ask you to vote for my idea Whispers in the Woods) and news about campaigns to upgrade Broomhill Park and a residents parking zone in arnos vale.

Earlier this year, the Hungerford Road area received its first children’s play park. Built in the Hungerford Open Space, children can now play closer to home instead of trooping off with their parents to Arnos Park or Victory Park. However, over in Broomhill, one of Brislington’s five playgrounds is falling into disrepair and an action group of concerned residents and parents has come together to change it.

It has been 25 years since the park was last upgraded and now faces an uncertain future. In May, I met with parents at the park after hearing about the problem at a Neighbourhood Forum meeting.

Situated on Eastwood Road, the park is split into two areas. At the top, is a playground for 4 to 7 year

olds featuring a climbing frame, three slides and some spring riders. The paint is chipped, the slides are too hot to use in the summer and it has been some years since any fresh chipping was laid down for kids to land on. There is also next to no shade.

Lower down the slope, next to a road leading to Beese’s Tea Gardens, is a flat concrete area with tired looking basketball hoops and a drug shelter. It is not surprising to see that older kids have nowhere to play sport, ride bikes or hang out. The area is also littered with broken glass.

Organisers of Upgrade Broomhill Park (find them on Facebook) have some fantastic ideas to help make the park better, safer and suitable for all ages. They need your help and our help to make them happen. Ideas include fencing on the concrete area to stop balls being lost, small five-a-side goals, mowing back the nettles to make more play space, planting trees to offer more shade, new chipping, proper bins, an area for biking and skating, and a noticeboard.

The council has also mentioned the idea of turning the OAP home across the road into a youth centre with flats. As anyone involved in the Wicklea youth centre know, the council’s promises are not worth so much when it comes to providing for the area’s youth and community. the nightingale viewOver the last few years I’ve helped here and there in Brislington’s green spaces; whether it’s coppicing and litter picking in the Nightingale Valley and St. Anne’s Woods or signing cheques on behalf of the Brislington Community Partnership (see page 7) for entrances, gateways and noticeboards, I have come to love our green areas. Brislington is a lucky place being urban yet so green. However, as Brislington Meadows demonstrates, it’s under constant threat of development.

I’d like to see a green arts project that goes wider than St. Anne’s Woods. After all, it has the Pageant each year and we have recently put in new entrances and gates. It would be nice for the arts project to reach around Brislington’s green spaces and connect them all together.

This is why I’ve created the Whispers in the Woods project idea which I’ll be submitting to this fund in the hope of doing exactly this.

Whispers in the Woods would work with the whole community (schools, groups, individuals) to produce haiku, simple Japanese-style poems about single moments in nature. I’d then work with local artisans to put these poems on wooden plaques made from reclaimed wood, to create a trail throughout Brislington tying together every green space.

save Wick Road library campaign updateWe are continuing to campaign and lobby the council to keep our local library open. We’d like to thank the local people, schools and businesses that have offered their support so far and encourage them to keep helping. The most important thing anyone can do at the moment is to complete the council’s official consultation form, which is online www.snapsurveys.com/wh/s.asp?k=142530268464 and paper copies are available at the library. Please do take the time to complete this even if you’ve signed the petition and completed an earlier consultation. It’s vital that we keep the pressure on Bristol City Council so they know the strength of feeling in the community. Watch this space for future updates…

Bristol 2015 European Green capital: Greater Brislington £10,000 neighbourhood arts commissionFrom September 2014 until the end of May 2015, the Bristol 2015 Neighbourhood Arts Team have been consulting residents and community groups across Bristol to find out what a local art project might look like for the Green Capital year.

The creative brief for the Greater Brislington area is now out, and Bristol 2015 are calling for responses from Bristol-based artists, makers and creatives. The commission is for £10,000. The deadline for proposals is Monday 8th June 2015 at 9am.

The Brislington Community Partnership will be holding its Annual General Meeting at the end of June.

The BCP is one of Brislington’s oldest community groups and precedes the council run Neighbourhood Forum. Set up by local residents, the group has helped find funding and organisation for our archaeology group, Discover Brislington Brook, a boxing club and for Wicklea Youth Centre.

More recently we have helped create and fund the Shop Brislington event, new entrances, paths, gateways and noticeboards for St. Anne’s Woods and Nightingale Valley.

We are looking to have a Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer and Secretary. Currently Mark Wollacott is Chair and Andy Coogan is Treasurer. If anyone would like to become secretary (to take minutes and arrange meetings) that would be wonderful.

The BCP would also love for people who want to represent community groups and/or neighbourhoods to come along so we can discuss issues such as Broomhill Park and work together to solve them.

As Chair, I’d like to say that for me, priorities are finding community spaces in Broomhill and St. Anne’s to replace what we lost in the Wicklea centre.

Residents of Edward Road and Chatsworth Road are considering applying for their roads to be one of the Mayor’s new residents parking zones. This comes after building work at The Paintworks site exacerbated an existing parking problem in the area.

People wishing to visit Arnos Vale Cemetery to have a look around, visit the café or join one of the many events (see page 6) often find parking a problem. The land is wedged between the cemetery, Bath Road and the Avon River meaning space is a premium. The only carpark belongs to Burger King, which expects custom and short-term parking – anyone staying too long will be fined. Beyond that there is only a busy carpark for Sainsbury’s and the Black Castle.

While the issue of where visitors to the cemetery and the local shops on the Bath Road park is a major one, so is the plight of local residents. They only have the space on the two roads and require access to it every day. This is especially a problem

with young families or with residents who find it hard to walk a long way to their homes.

Residents fear this problem will only grow due to building work on new flats on the Paintworks site. Due to this, they are working with the Neighbourhood Partnership and Bristol Council to explore the possibility of setting up a Residents Parking Scheme which would ensure space on the two roads are set aside exclusively for residents.

The scheme will allow residents to have up to two registrations on a permit. These can be swapped between vehicles. Anyone else parking in the road will face a fine or there may be a parking ticket system. A parking zone would be best for residents, but may take some time to come into being due to applications, consultations and so on. Aside from this, the council does need to look for alternative parking space or better sign posting for car parks such as the one on Sandy Park Road.

Hi i am a 32 year old stay at home mum of 2 and have been a member of Brislington Women’s

institute since it began 2 years ago. some of you have heard about us, some of you have seen our ads on your Facebook pages, and a lot of you may have some questions. so here is my quick guide to your local Wi!

do i need a twinset and pearls?

Quick answer: If you like to wear twinsets and pearls, then please come along wearing them. If you don’t, then don’t. We are an open, honest and varied bunch. You won’t be judged on what you are wearing or your ability to bake or make jam. We are a group of women who want to get to know other women in the area, enjoy learning about new things and socialising (preferably over cake and maybe a glass of wine).

are your talks hands on?

The talks we have throughout the year are as varied as the people who come. Some months they are practical and hands on, for example we had a talk on Shabby Chic where we all brought a wooden item and were taught to paint and sand it. Last month we all made lampshades.

However we also have had talks from a CSI investigator, a Pilates instructor, and even a pirate (this one had to be seen to be believed!).

is it just the monthly meetings we can get involved in?

Not at all! Brislington WI has made its own bunting where each member made a triangle to piece together. A number of our members entered the Avon Federation Craft competition inspiring one member to pick up her knitting needles for the first time in 30 years!

We have held a very successful Christmas Fair for the last two years, and a group of us went to Ladies Day at Wincanton Races this month (hats an’ all!)

This year we are supporting The Rainbow Centre as our charity of the year. Already we have helped “man the hut”, providing refreshements at their charity golf event raising £149, as well as collecting donations at meetings in exchange for cake. We can’t wait to see what other ways we can get involved.

It was really daunting walking into the room on my own for that first meeting so I know exactly how you feel! But I can honestly say over this last 2 years I have made lifelong

friendships. Friendships with women whos paths I may never have crossed. As an adult it is so hard to make new friends and enter new circles. Brislington WI is an easy place to do it. You won’t regret walking through the doors at Arnos Manor Hotel for your first meeting.
