Confirmation May 20, 2018

On Pentecost Sunday, Bethany Covey

Leigha Fry & Ayden Human

confirmed their baptismal promises and their full member-ship in Mt. Olivet U.M.C.

At the present time we are working on revisions of the job descriptions for our staff. We truly ap-

preciate all of our staff and the work that they do and we thank God for their dedication to further-

ing the ministries at Mt. Olivet. Between job descriptions and finalizing our Church Profile for the

District Office we’re a busy crew! Blessings......Ann Carson

Dear Friends,

As a congregation, we are involved in so many ministries that it's hard to keep track of everything. But

it's also important to be able to let our visitors know where they can get involved through this congrega-

tion. With your help, we can put together a list of the things that we do, both through the church, and

independently in the community. So, what are you doing? Please send me a 2-sentence description of your ministry,

and we will create a list to share with our visitors. Please also include the things that you do independently of Mt.

Olivet, say Meals on Wheels as an example, we don't want to claim credit, but we can let people know how to get

connected to these community ministries as well.

Just two sentences would be a tremendous help. And not just for visitors by the way, there are almost certainly peo-

ple already a part of our church family who don't know what you're up to! And they might like to help, if they knew.

Please get a reply back to me as soon as possible. Anything and everything that you're doing counts! It doesn't have

to be church related or specifically service related, it can be purely social, if your group is open to new participants.

Thank you, Pastor Christine

Tuesday Morning Prayer Circle

A small group continues to meet on Tuesday mornings at

9:00 to pray specifically for the ministry of Mt. Olivet

U.M.C. Recent topics have included everything from Con-

firmation to the Preschool. Whatever you are involved

with in the church, YOUR ministry is being lifted up in

prayer. Please come and join us as we pray for each other.

Cherokee 2018

The team is busy preparing for our mission trip at the end of July. We have had two planning meetings with two more on the calendar before our July 21 departure. We use the meetings for not only the logisti-cal concerns with the trip but just as important is the time we spend together in team building activities. By doing this we get to know each other better and friendships begin before we get to Cherokee. The team is also in the process of raising the funds necessary to make the trip possible. Many of you may not know that we pay for all supplies needed to do our construction jobs. We pay to stay at the church, we also shop for and prepare all our own meals while in Cherokee. These are only a couple of ways the money we raise is used. We appreciate your financial support. We will be manning the lemonade stand at Riverfest again this year and we were given the opportunity to set up the lemonade stand during the car show at the library over Memorial Day weekend. You will also have the opportunity to purchase Stock for our Cherokee trip, you will be receiving a letter in the mail with a stamped envelope you can mail back with your enclosed check. The youth will also be selling stock certificates before and after church ser-vices. Mostly importantly we need your prayers as we prepare our hearts and minds for the mission God has in store for us. Thank you again for your support! If you have any questions please contact Kathy Whitaker @ 302-841-8925 or [email protected]

Mt. Olivet Preschool Last Day/End of Year Program was on Tuesday, May 15th and we had a full house!

The Graduates from our 4-year old class. They are moving onto Kindergarten in September and though very sad to see them

go, we are happy to have spent this school year with each of them.

Another year of Preschool has

ended. Our entire student body

attended the final event and put on

a great performance. There were

a few tears for the ones that are

moving on to kindergarten next year but we

were happy to see how far all the children have

come from where they started. It warms your

heart. The teachers are already well into plan-

ning for September, gathering materials and

adjusting curriculum. Preschool information

and registration forms are available on the What a great looking group this is! We will

or in the church office. We offer an action-

packed curriculum in the 2 and 3-year old

classrooms while working on kindergarten Prayers for Linda & her daughter, Christi for

readiness in the 4-year classroom. Classes safe travels as they leave for Israel on 6/23.

Vacation Bible School

Shipwrecked!

June 18-22

Dinner & Registration: 5:00 to 5:30

VBS: 5:30-8:00

Mark Your Calendars Now….Don’t Miss It!!!!

There are lots of ways to help. Take a look at the big bulletin board in the hall. There are mate-

rials to gather; take a shell or a fish and bring back the items that are requested by the date

noted on the card. And we need people to be the body of Christ. There are lots of ways to help,

during the day, or in the evening, all week long, or just a day or two. The details and the sign-up

sheets are on the bulletin board as well. All of these tasks together are the work of the King-

dom, building up the connection between these children and the God who loves them.

Online giving is available for most of the common types of giving. You may designate money to go to the operating budget or roof fund. You may pay for bulletin covers or flowers just to name a few. It is easy to use and it is safe. In-structions on how to set up an account can be found at Mt Olivet’s web site:

www.mountolivetseaford.org. Click on Online Giving, click on HERE in step 1.

Your e-mail account is used as your online giving username. Don’t want to set up an account; you can do Quick Give which takes you directly to a one time giving form. Online giving accepts debit cards, check cards, Visa, or Master Card. Why use online giving? Maybe all your other giving is done online. You can set up recurring amounts so that your contribution is given on the frequency that you want. Maybe you are going on vacation or unable to attend. An easy way to make sure your tithe still gets to Mount Olivet is to use online giving. The options are very flexible. Let’s say you want to give $200 to the roof fund. You can set up a recurring amount of $20 per month for 10 months to happen on the 5th of the month. Donations given online will be noted on your quar-terly statements the same as donations given in the offering. for questions/more information, contact Sally Andersen or Scott Bagshaw.

The past few months have been busy ones. Most recently, we began cleaning

out closets, the attic and outside storage shed. Melissa Ferree got the ball rolling

by reorganizing the attic and the Sunday School closet. We had a trailer full of all

kinds of things no longer used or needed. This was planned to take advantage of

the city’s free trash pickup week. Al Hastings, Ken Covey, Bill West, Jerry Barnes,

Paul Missfeldt and Chris West provided the muscle in loading and unloading the

trailer. There are still areas that need work.

We have plans to work with our Sunday

school teachers and staff through the sum-

mer to do a thorough cleaning so to be

ready for the fall. The preschool teachers

did a great job sorting, scrubbing and reor-

ganizing their classrooms. Our kitchen is

next on the list. We will need extra hands

to clean out cabinets and reorganize. It

would be wonderful if volunteers could help

for an hour or two after our VBS week. You

will hear more about this from Val Lejman,

our Education Chair and Trustee liaison

when we have a schedule in place.

Some of you may have noticed the new elevator carpet. Wayne Sammons generously donated the carpet and in-

stallation was paid from the trustee’s budget. We have replaced many lights throughout the church. Sanctuary

lights are a challenge due to the height and accessibility. We have begun to replace the old fluorescent lights with

new LED lights.

We also have mounted a defibrillator on the wall outside the church office. Additional shelves were added in the

choir room closet for altar guild use, compliments of Ken Covey. Al Hastings helped with installation. Bill West has

repaired/reinforced the pull down attic stairs.

Our HVAC systems are now being serviced by Service Today, after many years of dedicated service from Henderson

Mechanical. Thanks Dan for all you do for the Trustees.

Our next project is to replace the leaking shingle roof on the storage shed with a “forever” metal roof. Cost of ma-

terials is estimated at $500/$600. A work day to remove old shingles and put on new roof will be scheduled when

we can form a team consisting of trustees, youth, and volunteers. As our building fund is now at $4,400, the trus-

tees work together to do as much of the maintenance as possible. A work day for the shed roof will be scheduled

soon. Much of what was removed from the shed was water damaged and infested with ants.

Plumbing issues in the men’s bathrooms have been repaired, a lead around the bell tower earlier in the year was

repaired under our warranty, a wheelchair accessible sign was installed at side Narthex doors, and new batteries

have been replaced in all church thermostats. This is just a partial list of what keeps us busy. We appreciate your

support in making us aware of things that require our attention.

We are your trustees, Al Hastings, Ken Covey, Jerry Barnes, Susan Human, Dave Libby, Bill West, Melissa Ferree,

Val Lejman, and Bev Volmer

Report for the First Third of 2018 – Jan – Feb – Mar

We are now through one-third of 2018 and the stewardship programs at Mt.

Olivet are doing quite well. One of the highlights for this year that we will be

having shortly is Vacation Bible School. If you have not visited Mt. Olivet dur-

ing this week, slip into the church and observe and listen. Excitement will be

“in the air” and the environment is so uplifting. Try it out!

The financial portion of our stewardship showed improvement in April. Last month, I highlighted that we

need $18,024/month in donations to provide staff and building maintenance support for the many and ex-

cellent ministries provided by Mt. Olivet for each of us and the Seaford Community. For the first three

months of 2018, donations were at a rate of $15,794/month while April was $16,351. For April, we cov-

ered expenses and this result was encouraging as our yearly cash flow stayed the same. Church financ-

es early in the year are higher than average and we are currently negative $15,000 cash flow year-to-

date. Electricity and heating expenses are very high during this period and we had a very cold winter.

As we enter the lower cost portion of the year, we are praying that increased donations will be a continu-

ing trend and we are continuing to search for options to reduce expenses without compromising services.

Please help us on both of these possibilities as you are able. Any ideas you have on the cost reductions,

send to me or drop off at the church office.

Breaking News! We have a new Stewardship Committee that has been working together preparing a

program for Mt. Olivet and beyond. Looking forward to future information from this inspired group.

Yours in Christ, Bill Slack – Finance Committee Chairman

Have you enjoyed the various altar treatments that we've used to high-

light special Sundays? If you've wondered how these ideas become

part of our worship services, please join us. We'd love to have your in-

put, your ideas, and your assistance in this ministry. We'll be discussing

some ideas at our next Worship Committee meeting, Wednesday, June

6th at 7:00 p.m. in the Lounge.

Our Church Council is moving forward on the program, Transformational ministries.

This ministry is geared to offer a hand up and transform the families, youth and chil-

dren in our neighborhood and community. To prepare ourselves, we are studying the

book “Redemptive Compassion “ during the summer starting at 9:45 on Sunday

mornings. We will meet in the lounge. All are invited to join this group. Books and schedules are in the lounge. This

will be a transformative time for those we want to help and for us at Mt. Olivet as well.

As summer arrives, it usually gets much quieter here at Mt Olivet. Many of the regular scheduled activities take

time off till fall. The one Activity, the one for our being here does not take time off. Morning WORSHIP is each

Sunday 8:30 and 11:00. It is our prayer that we will all be faithful in worshiping our Heavenly Father each week.

Sunday School Program at 11:00 Service, May 13th……….

We just wrapped up another terrific year of Sunday school. Thank you to our awesome teachers and students.

Education is alive and well at Mt. Olivet! Over the course of the school year, we had 120 people attend 11 different

classes. Thank you to all involved including Amy Pearson who volunteered to teach the 4th/5th grade class next

school year! See you in September.

The service was fantastic as usual. Thank you, Melissa Bagshaw! We also give thanks for our

incredible teachers/helpers. It is so wonderful to see these children grow in their faith each year!

(picture provided by Alisha Carneal)

It seems very, very early to be thinking about nominations for 2019, but it’s not! In order to have a report

ready for our Church Conference, we need to start working now. The goal of the process is a successful

match between each position, the gifts and strengths of each person, and God’s plan. That takes some time.

The Nominations and Lay Leadership Team will be meeting June 25th to begin get this work started.

You can help. If you feel God calling you to participate in a particular area of administration or ministry,

please let us know. Pastor Christine is the chair of this committee, and you can

also talk to any member, Susan Hickey, Susan Elliott, Connie Chapman, Jacalyn

Bradley, Billy Whitaker, Michele Strayer, Mike Covey, Louis Wilbanks, Susan

Carey, and Paula Wells. If you have a suggestion for someone to invite to a

team that you are already working with, please get those names to us as well.

We would like to offer a call to serve to as many of the members of the congre-

gation as we can. Each of us has unique gifts and passions that can empower all

of our ministry together.

2018 Annual Conference

The Peninsula-Delaware Conference will celebrate their annual conference at UMES in Princess Anne, Maryland on May 31-June 2, 2018.

As Sunday School was drawing to a close for the summer, our book ended with a few

Sundays left. We decided to spend those times studying the minor prophets, mostly be-

cause they were short and we knew very little about them. Were we surprised! Very inter-

esting and informative, so we are continuing the study in the fall. We invite you to join us

and see how relevant their message is today.

If you have any prayer shawl needs during the summer, please contact the

office or Pastor Christine. We aren’t meeting but we want to take care of

any need that arises during the time off from our monthly gatherings.

Thanks so much! Have a wonderful and blessed summer. If you would like

to join us in September, we will welcome you with open arms.

for you. Sign up to be a volunteer! Children @ Worship continues

through the summer!

Reflecting on the past year, we have had a wonderful

time of fellowship and rejoicing in Children @ Worship!

Thank you parents for bringing your children and sup-

porting this program. As you can see, the children really

enjoy acting out the Scriptures in God’s Holy Word.

The children love to have Volunteers visit! They enjoy reciting the

scriptures for you. Sign up to be a Volunteer!

The children enjoy doing skits, celebrating Jesus’ birthday, partici-

pating in the Christmas pageant, learning the Lord’s Prayer, study-

ing the Fruits of the Spirit, learning about communion and putting

on the full armor of God!
