We are a community of faith that expresses itself

through the views of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. We strive to live out God’s grace

by worshiping God, sharing time together in fellowship, and reaching out to our neighbors. We

It’s That Time Again

…time to ABIDE!!!

I know that we have several ministries

coming up geared towards our youth and

children, but after these events Advent is

headed towards several weeks of abiding.

In June, we will have Vacation Bible

School, AFFIRM, and the ELCA Youth

Gathering, which will bring about the

development of faith in our youth and

children, will bring about lots of excitement,

and will create wonderful new memories.

As we live and move and have our being as

God’s own, we experience times of hard

work and times of rest. John 15 uses

slightly different terms: Abiding and

Bearing Fruit. In times of Abiding, we are

not just sitting idly. We might be going on

vacations, we might be alone, we might be

with others, we might be resting, we might

be planning. All of these “abiding” modes

mean that we won’t see the fruit being

produced. The fruit – the work – comes

later. Give yourself permission to rest!

One event occurring at the beginning of

June is our Synod Assembly for the

Southeastern Synod of the ELCA, when we

gather in Chattanooga, TN, June 1-3, 2018.

One very exciting development is that our

congregation council elected two special

Voting Members to vote at the assembly on

behalf of Advent. Those elected are a youth

(under 18) and a young adult (18-30). The

youth is Dylan Jannett, who is also attending

the assembly as the SESLYO Chaplain.

(SESLYO is the synod’s youth organization:

SouthEastern Synod Lutheran Youth

Organization.) And for our young adult

voting member (who once served as the vice

chair and chair of SESLYO) is our

seminarian, Elizabeth Hawkins! I do not

know of any congregation that has had both

a YOUTH and a YOUNG ADULT as their 2

voting members! This is very exciting! I

hope you are as excited for this development

as I am.
