BELMONT STAKES This Triple Crown season comes to a close June 6 with the world watching to see if Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner American Pharoah passes “The Test of the Champion” — New York’s Belmont Stakes. The race doesn’t always go to the fastest but rather the horse that can stay the mile-and-half distance over a deep track with uniquely wide, sweeping turns. American Pharoah will also face rested horses who bypassed the Preakness. Possibles as of press time include familiar Derby faces: Frosted, Mubtaahij, Carpe Diem, Keen Ice and Materiality. Madefromlucky, who won traditional Belmont prep, the Peter Pan, the week after the Derby, is also under consideration. History tells us that horses who have previously run at Belmont fare best in their Triple Crown bid— all 11 winners, in fact. This will be American Pharoah’s first start at “Big Sandy.” Post time is 6:40 p.m. Television coverage begins 3 p.m. on NBC Sports, switching over to NBC at 5 p.m.

Keeping things in the Commonwealth, Lancaster Strawberry Wheat is a PA-made, lager-style beer with a hint of berry—tart and crisp—with a 4.7% ABV. Shock Top Spiced Banana Wheat is a limited edition available on draught only.One beer geek urged, “get past the word ‘banana.’” Once again, a hint of flavor accompanying a wheat taste, actually a bit on the heavy side and with a corresponding 5.5% ABV. I sampled one at the Ironwood.

NORTHERN APPALACHIAN FOLK FESTIVAL Mark your calendars for September 11th and 12th when the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival returns to downtown Indiana for a third year. Celebrating the region’s art, music and culture, the Festival will feature an expanded lineup of free, live entertainment. Summer… That wonderful time of year when the sun worshipers spend as much time outdoors (wearing as little as possible); and the others huddle in dark rooms with an air conditioner cranked up to sub zero temperatures. Personally I find myself doing a little of both—depending on my mood. Whatever your preference, Indiana can accommodate you. Though be fore-warned, this town has its share of places that Goldilocks and The Three Bears must have had a hand in setting their thermostats. Your best bet is an early lunch in one of the many sidewalk cafés or patio decks—before the air gets too hot. You’ll find that most of the better restaurants have at least a couple of tables outside. Also be aware, that if you plan to imbibe downtown, that borough establishments require that you have food with your beverage. So keep some appetizers on the table if you plan to have more than one drink. And, remember to tip double, if you end up staying twice as long than you would if you just ate a meal and split. You’ll also find that quite a few of the outdoor spaces double as smoking sections; so if you can’t stand second-hand smoke, check with your server before you get too comfortable and order food. On the other hand, if you’re into smoking (indoors), places like Boomies, Wolfie’s (after 10), The Coney’s back bar, Strike Zone, Rose Inn, Pikel’s and others usually have the AC on and provide plenty of ash trays. Perhaps the best summer outdoor dining is in the evening on a non-smoking deck, courtyard, or patio. Check out Benjamin’s out back, the upstairs covered deck at The Ironwood, The Coventry, Grub’s, Coney and Twisted Jimmy’s outdoor areas—also Spaghetti Benders (back deck is smoking) but sometimes he puts tables out front (hint). Yes, there are plenty of others—just read through the dining guide. The main thing is to get out, get some sun on your face, or breath in some fresh night air, and have fun.
