TAKE YOUR FAMILY on an unforgettable journey this summer. Step back

in time and travel to 19th century rural Wisconsin. Imagine the way of life

for many European immigrant farmers through a hands-on, interactive

museum experience.

Opened in 1976—the bicentennial year—the mission of Old World

Wisconsin was to commemorate the early immigrant experience in the

state by preserving the buildings, artifacts and customs of those groups.

Located in the Village of Eagle, in southwestern Waukesha County, Old

World Wisconsin is encompassed by 600 rolling, wooded acres. And it is

among the 12 museums and historic sites administered by the Wisconsin

Historical Society www.wisconsinhistory.org.

The museum includes teams of oxen and horses working in the

fields, the farm folk preparing hearty meals over wood-burning stoves, and

heirloom plants in well-tended gardens. The Crossroads Village includes a

shoe maker, blacksmith, 1860s and 1880s gardens, and a general store.

Nearly four decades since Old World Wisconsin opened, more than 60

historic structures include ethnic farmsteads with furnished houses and

rural outbuildings and traditional small-town institutions are found in the

Village. The efforts of countless historians have preserved an amazing slice

of true Americana.

“In the last couple of years, we have made a conscious effort to make

this experience more accessible to people of all ages,” said Dan Freas,

director, Old World Wisconsin. “It’s not just for history buffs.”

For Freas and many others who are committed to preserving the state’s

rural, agrarian history, Old World Wisconsin is a destination that is fun for

everyone and one that is family friendly. “It’s a place where children will be

entertained,” he added.

When the museum first opened, visitors were exposed to a more

passive experience with staff or volunteers dressed in period costumes and

reenacting scenarios typical of the farming life of that era.

“Today, we are designing new ways of engaging people as they explore

the past,” said Freas. “We hope to provide an escape from technology and

the pace of our day-to-day lives.”

Through the Life on the Farm program, which began two years ago,

visitors can take on the identity of someone who worked on a 1880s

Wisconsin farm. Each participant receives a card that includes three

very simple chores they must perform, such as collecting eggs from a

chicken coop.

“To see the look on a child’s face, or an adult’s face, when they collect the

eggs—those are really special moments. At Old World Wisconsin, we’re

creating memorable experiences that families can

share and memories that last a lifetime,” said Freas.

New and different programming is being

offered, so it will not be the same Old World

Wisconsin experience for those recalling a grade

school field trip of years past, whether as a

student or chaperone.

In addition to a dedicated staff, the

organization has more than 200 volunteers.

Many of these individuals are members of the

Friends of Old World Wisconsin.

“When they are Friends, they are financial

supporters and share their love and passion

for this historical treasure,” said Sara Dostal,

manager, Old World Wisconsin Foundation.

Since 1984, the Foundation has raised more

than $7 million from individuals, corporations

and foundations. “We are grateful for a

committed group of donors who help preserve

these treasures of our past,” said Dostal.

Visitors are welcome and encouraged to

support the museum through their attendance

during regular hours of operation or by

participating in a special event, such as the 12th

annual Midsummer Magic event.

On Saturday, June 21, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.,

the Crossroads Villagewill come to life with

more than 50 food and beverage stations, four

music stages, and a strolling magician. For $55

general admission ($45 for members of the

Old World Foundation), visitors will experience

the ambiance of Old World Wisconsin as they

interact with volunteers in period costumes or

take a horse and wagon ride in the Village.

According to Dostal, more than 800 people

attend Midsummer Magic. “It is a beautiful

evening, when people can experience the full

ambiance of the museum,” she added.

Continued support of this and other

fundraising events ensure that Old World

Wisconsin will be enjoyed by generations to come.

“If I am meeting with donors on site, I love

to point out the many things they have funded

over the years. It is gratifying to show people

tangible proof of how their money is making a

difference,” said Dostal. “Old World Wisconsin

tells the story of our people—immigrants who

settled in Wisconsin. It is the story of all of us.”

LOCATED RIGHT IN the heart of Delafield, just off the

beaten path, is this gem of a neighborhood; Lakeside

Conservancy. The homes are stunning as you will find in

many high-end subdivisions. What sets this community

apart is the neighborhood itself. Beautifully planned and

flawlessly executed, Lakeside Conservancy is entered by

driving through a tunnel formed by 100-year-old trees.

Bronze statues of children greet you at the entrance to let you

know you have arrived somewhere special–and special it is.

Upon entering you see a beautiful clubhouse that

presents like a quaint English cottage. Inside is a hearth

room, small kitchen area and changing rooms for the pool.

This pool, that only serves this neighborhood is gorgeous

and so appreciated. The 34 acres of open space and 7 miles

of walking trails further add to the uniqueness and beauty

of Lakeside Conservancy. A carefully placed firepit in each

cul-de-sac further enhances the charm and draws people

outdoors. Home suggested by Meg Fox of Shorewest

CONCEALED ALONG a quiet road toward

the back of the already secluded Legend at

Brandybrook village sits a residence unparalleled.

Without question, there are numerous homes in

this isolated golf community that are quite special

in their own right, but this particular Barenz-built

classic stands apart from any of them. There are

stand-out features from one end of this nearly

9,000-square-foot masterpiece to the other, with

a spectacular view of the par 3, 12th hole at The

Legends course not being the least of them.

Entering the driveway and past the first level

of meticulous landscaping, the drive is carefully

proportioned to split a pair of two-car garages in

half. The exterior of the home is finished in hard

coat stucco, with a lifetime-warrantied Decra

metal enamel-coated roof. The two-story entryway

with grand staircase sets the tone for a Tuscany-

themed open concept design throughout the

home. Walking straight ahead, the foyer quickly

gives way to a unique combination of kitchen

and great rooms. The ten-foot ceilings offer a

dimension of stateliness that carries throughout

the main level, and a solid brick archway provides

an imaginary border between the two rooms.

The great room is highlighted by a wood

beamed ceiling and recessed lighting that

underscore the built-in bookcases and natural

fireplace. A pair of French doors provides access

to the wrap-around deck looking out over the

backyard. Not to be overlooked in this room (and

in ten other rooms throughout the home) is a

hidden Stealth Acoustics surround sound theater

system buried into the woodwork. Utilizing an

internet-based wireless control system created by

Vantage—the televisions, stereo systems, lighting

throughout the home and even the multiple

zone climate control system can be managed

with the touch of a finger from any iPad. It is a

technologist’s delight.

Even with the open concept, the adjacent

kitchen still takes on a feel of its own thanks to the

double island design of the room. Although both

islands are finished in granite, the outer island

sports a row of bar stools, its own copper and brass

prep sink and a beverage chiller—perfect as either

a breakfast or entertainment bar. The inner island is

a bit more functional for the chef in the house with

two stainless steel sinks and plenty of cabinet space.

The kitchen is loaded with additional features

including a Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer; Wolf

range and exhaust fan; a Miele automatic coffee

machine; a large walk-in pantry; writing desk; a

custom-designed backsplash and a cooking area

that is finished off with an ArcusStone surround

which is a Limestone coating developed in Europe

in the early 1960s.

Bordering the kitchen to the east is the

dinette area and a perfect complement to the

other two rooms. A circular room big enough

to support a table for ten, it also has a wall of

windows providing the ultimate view of the back

patio, landscape work and a great view of the golf

course and beyond. The backyard actually slopes

down and well below the main level of the home,

providing a perfect setup for the walk-out lower

level and further enhancing the view from the

main and upper levels.

There are two other entryways off the

kitchen. The first one heads toward one of the

garages and also passes by the main level laundry

and mud rooms. The laundry room could actually

double as a craft or hobby room, as it includes a

ton of cabinet space and built-in desk and work

areas. This back hallway also leads to the stairs

for the lower level and a second set of stairs to

the upper level, in addition to a full bath and the

mud room. The second exit off the kitchen leads

to the formal dining room. This room continues

on with the Tuscany theme, utilizing more of

the sculptured ArcusStone to create a textured

finish for the two built-in hutches that border the

entryway. It also includes a butler’s pantry, accent

niches, wainscoting, crown molding and pillar

accents leading back out toward the foyer.

Circling around, we again pass through

the foyer into the office/den area. This room

includes dark maple paneling, a beamed ceiling

and more elegant built-in cabinetry. A concealed

door, paneled like the rest of the room, leads to

a hallway that takes you to the second garage

or toward the family room. Due to the massive

nature of the home, several of the rooms could

actually serve multiple different purposes. This

family room for example, could also be used as

a living room, den or another office. It includes

a tiled floor, ceiling fan, walls of built-in shelving

and storage and pocket doors leading to the

sunroom. The sunroom is a quaint little room on

the back corner of the home with two walls of

windows and a private door to the balcony.

Making our way up to the second level you’ll

find that the creativity doesn’t stop. The spacious

loft area really brings out the chocolate espresso

maple flooring, another specialty feature that is

common throughout the home. This room could

be used as a library, study or entertainment room

with built-in cabinet areas and work desks along

the border. Taking full advantage of the space over

the double garages, there are two additional bonus

rooms that you normally wouldn’t find on this

level. Both of these rooms on the second level are

temperature controlled. One of them is currently

being used as an exercise room and the other for

personal storage. Moving along, on the north end

of this level you’ll find the first two of six official

bedrooms. One of them is over three-hundred

square feet and the other is over two-hundred

fifty. As with every bedroom in the home, each

has its own private full bath and each has an

awesome view of the exterior landscape. On the

south end of this level is the master suite. The

suite includes a built-in armoire and a morning

bar with sink and beverage chiller. The highlight

though, has to be the private balcony looking out

over the landscape which seems to stretch for

miles. From this vantage point, whether you’re a

golf fan or not, the view just doesn’t get any better

than this. The master bath is loaded with features

as well, including a heated tile floor, his and hers

vanities and a private make-up vanity, a step-in

shower and a huge soaking tub with a stone

accent wall including a mounted TV.

Finally, we make our way down to the lower

level to relax in the setting of a huge recreation

room with full kitchen which includes a wet

bar, beverage chiller, microwave, dishwasher and

stainless steel sink. While this level could easily

be transitioned to an in-law quarters, it has so

much to offer that might be a tough decision. In

addition to the rec room there is a private music

room, a game room with granite serving counters

and room for game tables. There are also three

more bedrooms with unique features of their own

including walk-in closets and full bathrooms.

Last, but clearly not least on this level, is an indoor

sport court constructed of poured cement. At

nearly six-hundred square feet and nearly twenty

feet high, it is currently setup for indoor basketball

but can be customized to suit your own needs.

Some of the additional amenities in the home

include: trowel plaster finishing in many of the

rooms; wrought iron light fixtures; double-closets

prepped for an elevator shaft; radiant heating

support for all floors; Pella windows; heated

garages; security system; sprinkling system;

terraced landscaping; multiple sprawling stone

patios and decks and so much more. This home

truly has so many “wow factor” features it is

something to behold. For more information about

SHOREWOOD’S SLOGAN, “At the edge of the city

and the heart of everything” sums up perfectly

this community’s appeal as a desirable place to

live, work, shop and raise a family. Comfortably

tucked between the Milwaukee River and Lake

Michigan, with close proximity to downtown

Milwaukee, Shorewood has a charming urban

feel in the European tradition. One of the area’s

oldest and most respected suburbs, this 1.5-

square mile community of more than 14,000

residents was originally incorporated in 1900 as

the Village of East Milwaukee with an official

a community that lives up to its reputation

Shorewoodname change to Shorewood in 1917. Today, with

a nationally recognized school district, eclectic

shops, award-winning restaurants and distinctive

architecture, Shorewood takes great pride in being

a diverse mix of families, professionals, singles,

empty nesters and senior residents all enjoying

a safe, connected lifestyle where neighbors look

out for one another. Long-Range Plans To Propel

Shorewood into the Future.

While holding tight to its history and

traditions, Shorewood is re-inventing itself and

taking on the future with a creative, progressive

Page 24: June 2014 Volume 67 Issue 8

attitude and a keyed-up vitality. The Village’s

substantial growth over the last decade can be

credited to a comprehensive Master Plan that is

helping shape Shorewood’s landscape with an

influx of mixed-use properties from top area

developers. The plan is bolstered by a proactive

marketing campaign to attract new residents

and families, along with new businesses. The

approach is working. Shorewood’s commercial

scene is full of energy and bustling with unique

businesses, including an intriguing variety of

shops, restaurants and pubs. Along with this,

enrollment at Shorewood’s nationally recognized

schools is on the upswing.

Working with realtors is an important part

of the Master Plan, and it’s a strategy that’s paying

off. Kate Kenlay, manager of the Shorewest office

in Shorewood, agrees. “The Village encourages our

involvement in community efforts and events.

That and excellent communications and close

interaction have made our realty sales much

easier and more successful. It’s made all the

difference when selling and buying in the area,”

says Kenlay.

new development is Booming

The many attractive, new developments

popping up along the Oakland Avenue corridor

complement the Village’s already diverse selection

of single- and multi-family homes and vintage

apartments. The Cornerstone, a mixed-use

commercial development at North Oakland

Avenue and Kensington Blvd, completed in 2010,

set the stage for Shorewood’s exciting development

explosion. With 24 luxury units and four upscale

retailers on the ground level, the property received

several awards, including the Best of Public/

Private Partnership designation from the “Business

Journal”, and an Intergovernmental Cooperation

Award in 2010 from the Public Policy Forum in

Southeastern Wisconsin.

The next spark to the community was

Ravenna—right across the street from The

Cornerstone, and built by the same developer,

WiRED Properties. This mixed-use property with

20 apartment homes and four upscale retailers

has attracted restaurants, pubs and shops creating

a lively and popular neighborhood hub. Just to

the south, in the heart of the Village, the recently

completed 84-unit LightHorse 4041 complex,

developed by the Mandel Group Inc., is the new

home of a ground-level Walgreens. The property

received the “Business Journal” Real Estate Award

as Best Residential Development in 2014.

Two major development projects are

on Shorewood’s agenda. Harbor Retirement

Associates will start construction of a senior

assisted-living and memory care community

this month at the Village’s west border at Capitol

Drive and Wilson Drive. And General Capitol

Group hopes to begin construction of a Roundy’s

Metro Market by fall 2014 in a two-block area in

the center of the North Oakland Avenue business

district. “These projects are good fits in our

overall economic development plan and

Development Authority.

Building Blocks for a strong community

Shorewood was recently designated as one

of America’s Best Intergenerational Communities

by the MetLife Foundation/Generations United,

one of only four communities in the U.S. to

receive this prestigious honor. The recognition is

well-deserved because supporting programs that

benefit all age groups is integral to Shorewood’s

planning initiatives. For example, Shorewood

Connects Neighbors, a Village-sponsored

program, is designed to increase a sense of

neighborliness and community. By reaching out

with block parties, other social and volunteer

events and connecting via e-mail, residents get

to know one another, celebrate together and

support each other in times of need. And they get

a chance to be recognized in the Neighborhood

of the Year competition which touts the positive

things neighbors are doing on their blocks, with

special acknowledgement for intergenerational

activities and neighborhood service projects. This

year’s winner, the Newton neighborhood, has

a long history of camaraderie, friendliness and

caring. Neighborhood resident Catherine Flaherty

says, “I love that so many residents are committed

to the Shorewood community, and volunteer to

help keep it a wonderful place to live.”

The impressive list of Shorewood’s

intergenerational commitments includes:

• A Senior Resource Center that offers a

variety of programs for learning and enrichment,

fitness classes, trips, and other special events.

• A Shorewood Connects Neighbors Yard

Clean-Up Day when volunteers help elderly or

disabled residents with yard clean-up.

• A Welcome New Neighbors Program

connecting new residents of all ages to Village

services, businesses, schools, and recreation and

volunteer opportunities.

Adding new housing space for all age

groups is a top Village priority. “Shorewood is

particularly pleased to be successfully blending

its residential and commercial landscapes with

dynamic developments such as the construction

of the senior assisted-living and memory care

community,” says Village President Guy Johnson.

setting High standards in educational excellence

Many families choose Shorewood as their

home because of the nationally recognized school

system. Just last year, Shorewood High School

was named the top high school in Wisconsin by

U.S. News & World Report. Outstanding academic

programs are complemented by stimulating

extracurricular activities to promote high

achievement and performance, including athletics,

music, art and a national award-winning drama

program. Shorewood Schools seek to develop

students who are critical thinkers, problem solvers,

exhibit strong positive character and are engaged

in the world around them. Learning strategies are

designed to foster individual talents and abilities

to create future leaders of their families, their

professions and their communities and to prepare

students for a lifetime of success. Mitzi and Mike

MacKedon chose Shorewood as the place to live

because they liked the school system. That was 40

years ago, so with the kids grown and long gone,

last year the MacKedon’s downsized, sold their

home and moved—but not out of Shorewood.

JUST FOR THIS moment take time to lay aside

your concern for your own future and the future

of our country, drop from your shoulders the

weight of worry and strain that has been getting

heavier with each passing day and lose yourself

in James Russell Lowell’s comforting lines:

“And what is so rare as a day in June?

Then, if ever, come perfect days;

Then Heaven tries Earth if it be in tune,

And over it softly her warm ear lays:

Whether we look, or whether we listen,

We hear life murmur, or see it glisten.”

With the unsettling national and

international news that has often filled the

airways during the first five months of this year,

you probably have not realized that nature has

proceeded in her usual orderly fashion, that June

and summer have arrived, and that nothing is so

rare, so perfect as a day in this sixth month.

There are always two sides to a coin, so for

the time being why not lay aside the gnawing

fears that turn our world into a shadowy, misty

grey, and accept the joyful truth that June is the

month of miracles.

A cloudless, heavenly blue sky, a warm

breeze, and out on the front lawn a handsome

robin struts his stuff, his red breast swelling with

the cadences and nuances of a spring musical

that he pours forth with true Pavarotti fervor.

Tomorrow you may hear from high up in a tree

his rain call, but at this moment he wants to be

seen, heard and admired.

The lilac bush in front of the screen house is

in bloom, its fragrance spilling over to us where

we sit on the deck listening for the helicopter

whirr of the first hummingbirds. In the garden

the white flowers of the strawberry plants are

a forerunner of luscious berries covered with

rich cream; and lettuce, onions and radishes are

vying with one another to be the first witnesses

to the warmth of a June sun.

The only fish that nest as late in the spring

as June are the bass, but the greatest miracle in

the animal kingdom in this month of miracles is

the deer. The first week in June sees the spotted

fawn come into being. This is the time when

we sneak silently down the road toward the

meadow. Cautiously we find shelter from one

tree to another; then we stop and gaze in rapture

that never lessens from one year to the next.

There they are—a doe and her spotted fawn on

the left quietly grazing, another doe and a fawn,

similarly occupied, silhouetted against the forest.

Shut out all the world’s turmoil for this one

perfect moment, close your eyes and feel within

yourself a sense of peace. “The earth is the Lord’s,

and the fullness thereof,” sang the psalmist.

“The Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot

save; nor his ear heavy, that it cannot hear,”

said Isaiah, the prophet. “Let not your heart

be troubled, neither let it be afraid,” comforted

the Nazarene carpenter.

Rest now in the spiritual center of your

being, and be glad. This is June, the month of

miracles, and God is. God is now!
