Workforce Task Forces AnnouncedWith more than 2,000 local job openings, workforce continues to be a major issue facing business.

Following a successful meeting of local HR Directors, The Chamber, EDC, local SHRM group and Job Service of ND are forming 6 task forces to work on potential solu-tions. While there is no one solu-tion, there are many things we can do collectively as businesses and nonprofit partners to iden-tify and get more people working in our community. The six task forces are:

• Business – Post Secondary Edu-cation Engagement

• Veteran/Military Recruitment

• New Americans Employment

• Joint Referral Network

• High School Career Awareness

• Niche Workforce Markets (examples: homeless, social ser-vice recipients, retirees)

Please feel free to contact Barry Wilfahrt at the Chamber at [email protected] or Keith Lund at the EDC at [email protected] if you would like to be in-volved in one or more of the task forces.

Depending on the purpose of each interim committee, the group has thanked the legislature for their past support of Grand Forks and Grand Forks region projects on everything from the new medical school to base im-pact funding.

On the horizon the team has updated the various committees on the enhanced use lease at the air force base, long term future of the base, transportation needs, UND capital and operation’s needs, water supply needs and long term infrastructure needs.

At the May Agribusiness Committee meeting Nancy Johnson, Executive Director of the ND Soybean Grow-ers Assoc., spoke to the committee about the soybean industry in our area.

According to Nancy, ND farmers intended to plant 6.5 million acres of soybeans this year, a one million acre increase (22%) from last year. However, given the late spring, soybean acreage may even be higher than that.

70 to 75 percent of the state’s soybean production is shipped by rail to ports in the Pacific Northwest, many of them bound for China. This is why the delays in rail car deliveries this winter and spring has been the Grow-ers Association’s No. 1 issue.

A recent NDSU study indicates that North Dakota farm-ers have already lost more than $66 million due to the lower-than-average cash prices, which are in part due to the rail congestion.

Leadership Team Building Communications Business Practices Community & Regional Awareness

The Chamber Leadership Program has offered me such a great opportunity to grow. I was able to connect and network with individuals from a variety of work backgrounds. I have developed many skills and began learning new techniques to apply to different work situations and different experiences in life. After graduating from this unique program, I believe that I am a more well-rounded individual!-Tricia Berg, Prairie Harvest

I had a blast in the program last year and I learned a lot. The present-ers arranged by the Chamber communicated ideas and lead activities that changed how I do things at work and at home. I learned a lot about Grand Forks, Grand Forks Air Force Base, and local businesses and organizations, and I made friends with 40 people who I had never met before meeting them at Chamber Leadership. The program developed in me a deeper ap-preciation of our communities and the people who live here, and I recom-mend it to anyone who wants to develop their skills and meet wonderful people in the process! - Connor Ruff, Alerus Financial

I feel that the leadership class was not only a learning experience but a great networking experience. The people in the 2013 class seemed to bond. The class spent time together outside of the training through group suppers and still keep in touch through email and ‘Business After Hours’. We learned about ourselves as leaders and were able to use those experiences in our daily work, as well as establish connections with the other classmates in both professional and social aspects.
