The 2013 edition unreels 14 films and two mornings of cartoons, a tried-and-true mix of classics, blockbusters and animation. Take out your smartphones and mark your calendars for Oz or 42, Les Misérables or Sing-along Grease among other tasty titles. (The Aug. 16, 17 and 29 movies were undetermined at press time. Please remember, the lineup may change depending on the availability of summer blockbusters. Those Hollywood types can be fickle.) All movies begin at 7:30 p.m., unless otherwise noted. Sunday classics start at 4 p.m. Saturday cartoons begin at 10 a.m. on June 15 and Aug. 17. JUNE 2142 (PG-13, 128 mins.). From April 2013. Meet Jackie Robinson (1919-1972) and follow his history-making tenure with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Much of it was filmed in and around Macon and Atlanta. Chadwick Boseman is Jackie.

Fun fact: Spike Lee floated a Jackie Robinson project in 1995 with Denzel Washington, but it never got off the ground.

JUNE 22Finding Nemo (G, 100 mins.). 2 p.m. A 10th anniversary screening. My, how Dory has grown. Or not. This 2003 crowd-pleaser tells the story of a timid clownfish determined to bring his son home. Voices: Albert Brooks and Ellen DeGeneres.

Fun fact: Pixar characters are often planned years in advance. Nemo first appeared in Monsters, Inc. (2001) as a stuffed toy on a couch in Boo’s room.

Les Misérables (PG-13, 158 mins.). 7:30 p.m. The mega-movie based on the mega-Broadway musical based on Victor Hugo’s rather huge novel follows the travails of anti-hero Jean Valjean in 19th-century France. Winner of three Academy Awards including Best Supporting Actress Anne Hathaway as the doomed Fantine.

Fun fact: Fantine runners-up included Amy Adams and Kate Winslet. And, yes, all the songs were recorded live and not in a studio.

JUNE 23The Birds (PG, 119 mins.). 4 p.m. You’ll get out just in time to see the starlings gathering on wires and trees. Caw. This 50th anniversary screening of Hitchcock's classic takes us to a small California town where winged creatures go on the attack. With Tippi Hedren.

Fun fact: The famous poster art for the film, in which a woman is pictured screaming, is not Hedren. It’s future Miss Daisy Jessica Tandy, taken from the scene where the birds come down the chimney.

Combining the words “indie-rock” and “supergroup” creates a bit of an oxymoron, since the understated DIY ethos of the former is essentially a rejection

of the arena-rocking implications of the latter. But if ever there was a true indie-rock supergroup, the Postal Service is it. The band formed after Ben Gibbard (best known as frontman of Death Cab for Cutie) collaborated with electronic music artist Jimmy Tamborello (aka Dntel) on a song for the latter’s 2001 album, Life Is Full of Possibilities. That song, “(This Is) the Dream of Evan & Chan” ultimately sparked an EP of remixes by artists such as the Flaming Lips, inspiring Gibbard and Tamborello to launch their side project. Originally a duo, the Postal Service was named after the team’s long-distance songwriting methodology: Tamborello would create the basic instrumental tracks and mail the digital audiotape to Gibbard, who was free to edit and add vocals as he saw fit. Singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis lived in the same complex as Tamborello and would occasionally record vocal tracks during the demo stage. Eventually, she became a full-fledged member of the electro-pop power trio. With co-production by Death Cab’s Chris Walla (who also added guitar and piano on several songs), the band released its debut album, Give Up, to widespread critical acclaim in 2003. The Postal Service immediately became a favorite among the indie-rock set, and Give Up became the Sub Pop Records label’s biggest hit since Nirvana’s debut. But then a funny thing happened ... or, more precisely, didn’t happen. In 2007, the Postal Service began working on a second album; Tamborello hinted its release would come before the end of

2008. Gibbard became more circumspect: “If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.” Rolling Stone magazine started comparing the album to Guns ‘N’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy — an eagerly awaited recording that might never happen. In November, Gibbard tweeted that there were no plans to produce another Postal Service album. Finally, in January, followers had hope. The trio's long-dormant website was updated to read: “The Postal Service 2013,” leading to speculation about a new album and possible reunion show. But the truth was better than most fans dared hope. In April, the band released a 10th anniversary edition of Give Up, which included a 15-song disc of rarities. It included two new songs — the trio’s first in more than a decade — co-written by Lewis. The band also launched its most ambitious tour ever, including high-profile performances at California’s Coachella Festival and Washington’s Sasquatch Music Festival. Will all this new activity bring Postal Service fans the sophomore LP they’ve been craving? It’s anyone’s guess. But you can bet it’s a question that Gibbard and company will get at every single stop along their reunion tour.

Atlanta author Phillip DePoy ‘moderates’ conversation between Shakespeare, Lao Tzu

When did you get the idea for the book?

I was working on the first ver-sion of Hamlet! The Musical! in the late 1980s with Eddie Levi Lee and many others. I was reading a new transla-tion of the Tao Te Ching. John F. Ferguson was play-ing Hamlet and said the line “Nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so,” and I exclaimed “That’s exactly what I’m reading right now!” I decided to see how many lines in the Tao and Shakespeare I could find that matched up. So that’s how long I’ve been working on the book.

How often did you work on it since then?

The research took until the late 1990s. I had to search through every Shakespeare play to find clues for the Tao. It took another four years to get the quota-tions from Lao Tzu and Shakespeare to match like a conversation. I showed it to my agent, but she never succeeded at selling it, so I put it away in 2002. Then I got a new agent, and she said “I know five people I can send this to today.” She did, and I got an offer what seemed like the next day.

When did you first get interested in Shakespeare and the Tao?

In high school. One of my first theater experiences was with the Actors and Writers Workshop of Walter Roberts — Julia and Eric Roberts’ father. I played Orsino in Twelfth Night and wrote the music for it. I was ter-

Juxtaposing such complementary concepts as the Tao’s “War must always occa-sion Peace” and Timon of Athens’ “Make war breed peace,” the book explores such vir-tues as patience, modesty and open-mindedness. In a conversation on Shakespeare’s birthday, DePoy discussed his lifelong fascination with the two authors.

rible, but it was the first time I under-stood Shakespeare’s language. Walter told me, “You can’t think about it like Shakespeare or poetry, you’re just a guy talk-ing.” It was a revela-tion to me at age 15. Around that time, my 10th grade English teacher introduced me to Alan Watts’ The Way of Zen, and I liked the chapter on Tao the most. Soon after that, I found an original text of the Tao at a used-book store. I bought enlightenment for 10 cents.

Can you explain the structure of the book? How much of the Tao is in it?

The Tao has 81 verses, so the book has 81 sections that match up. I only use a couple of lines from each verse, just like I only use a couple of lines from each Shakespeare play. I believe the quote I use is the essence of each verse. I have about 17 to 18 translations of the Tao, and I took quotes from all of them. All of the translators use radically differ-ent words, yet say exactly the same thing.

Did you use your theatrical back-ground in composing the book?

I was trying to make it conversational, in the way I hope good dialogue in a play is conver-sational. I’ve been working on how to have a performance of the book that resembles a moderated debate, with an actor being Lao Tzu having his say, an actor being Shakespeare having his say, and the moderator reading from the introduction and the commentaries. Each section has a commentary, even though I don’t think I’m educated or enlightened enough to comment at all. A lot of the com-

mentaries include quotes from famous people who agree with Lao Tzu and Shakespeare, and a lot is just simplifying the idea to its most basic.

Since Lao Tzu puts so much value on Zen-like simplicity, and Shakespeare conveys the complexity of human experience, you’d think they’d be very different.

That may be, from the Renaissance point of view, the

difference between the Eastern world and Western world. As the Eastern world grew, the idea was to simplify. When the Western world grew, the idea was to become more complex and ornate and complicated. In the book, each helps to illuminate the other. That’s the goal. The book shows how they use different words to say basically the same thing. So maybe it’s not so hard to reconcile Eastern and Western thought.

What else do you have coming up?

I’m having a workshop production of Edward Foote, a play based on Oedipus Rex, at the Alliance Theatre, I’m having conversations with Tom Key about an Appalachian version of Tristan and Isolde for Theatrical Outfit, and I’m going to travel to book events to promote my latest Fever Devilin novel, December’s Thorn.

Larry Johnnson’s fellow film-goers don’t always welcome his ten-dency to make witty asides dur-ing movies. “Friends of mine in Philadelphia almost threw me

out of their house when we were watching The Graduate,” Johnnson recalls. “But Simon and Garfunkel kept singing ‘Are you going to Scarborough Fair?’ and I wanted to know if anyone ever got to Scarborough Fair.”

Johnnson makes his habit work for him as a performer and the driving force behind Cineprov, which provides live run-ning commentary on films that range from notorious turkeys like The Room to such hits as Back to the Future. As the 8-year-old venture settles into its new home at the Plaza Theatre, Johnnson wants to seize the new chance to make a first impression.

Counting Johnnson, who serves as com-pany president (he prefers “sarcasm czar”), Cineprov has a core ensemble of seven performers. Three “mockers” perform per show and, of the group, only Johnnson,

and two others have live-comedy experi-ence. The rest are quick-thinking movie buffs and fans of the cult TV series “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” in which a host and his puppets riffed on cheesy mov-ies like Hercules Against the Moon Men.

Cineprov began in 2005 at Buckhead’s Basement Theatre, where Johnnson did improv with a troupe on Fridays and Saturdays. He recalls wearing a “Mystery Science Theater” T-shirt to a workshop and a castmate saying, “We should just do that and make fun of a movie as a show. If no one shows up, at least we can watch the movie.” Thus Cineprov was born.

It caught on at the Basement Theater, spent a brief period at Decatur’s Sketchworks and found a home at Midtown’s Relapse Theatre for nearly five years. The company built an audience, selling out such shows as its annual Valentine’s Day screening of Showgirls, but the venue gave Johnnson technical headaches.

He planned to close the show at Relapse after the 2012 holidays, but the theater

closed first. “It ruined our ‘You can’t fire us — we quit!’ moment,” he says.

In April, Cineprov found a new home at the refurbished, 175-seat upstairs screen at the vintage Plaza Theatre in Poncey-Highland. “I always wanted to do Cineprov at an actual movie theater, so to do it at the Plaza was huge for us,” says Johnnson. Unlike Relapse, the Plaza doesn’t serve alcohol, so Johnnson encourages audience members to have a drink beforehand at the Righteous Room next door.

While “Mystery Science Theater” and recent spinoffs like “Cinematic Titanic” rely on scripted commentary, Cineprov’s jokes are mostly improvised. Johnnson admits that a little preparation makes for a better audience experience.

“I see performers get so caught up in the craft of improv that they forget the audience paid to be entertained. To make our shows better, we all watch the movie ahead of time, which mostly gives us a sense of the breaks in the movie.

“Our first film at the Plaza, Eddie, The Sleepwalking Cannibal, has a scene with the main character chasing people

in his underwear, and that’s funnier on its own than anything we’d say. I’d say the show is still 90 percent improvised.”

Over the years Cineprov has made sport of hundreds of films, everything from Ankle Biters to Citizen Kane. And Johnnson admits that some seemingly sure-fire ideas can backfire. “We thought it would be a great idea to do Michael Mann’s Last of the Mohicans for Thanksgiving. It turned out to be super-long, horrifyingly bor-ing and no one said anything funny.”

Cineprov’s lineup for June thus far includes 1961’s One-Eyed Jacks with Marlon Brando on June 2; the 1932 horror flick White Zombie on June 9; and the 1958 adventure comedy Wild Women of Wongo on June 16. Sadly, by the time you read this, you’ll have missed the John Travolta’a infamous TV movie “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble” and the 1936 marijuana propa-ganda film Reefer Madness.

If you’ve ever wondered what treasures and stories lie behind the glow-

ing marquee of the Fox Theatre, you have a new chance to discover it all.

This spring, the his-toric movie palace known for its performing arts and architectural history, once again began hosting regular tours, this time with highly trained guides who know the venue inside and out. The tours are one way the Fox keeps its promise to preserve and share the theater with Atlantans, the people who have kept it running for more than three decades.

The new tours include two previously unseen loca-tions, a spot in the main auditorium near the stage and the original ballroom kitchen where the origi-nal ice box still sits.

“As the only historic theater in the country with a full-time, in-house restoration department, we take pride in preserving and maintain-ing the Fox for future gen-erations,” says Allan Vella, Fox president and CEO.

Visitors get a 60-minute tour that showcases must-see details of the Fox, which opened Christmas Day in 1929. They’ll see at least 10

locations, from the orchestra pit, historic elevator and Oasis Court, to the Mighty Mo’ organ and the Men’s Lounge, with its original furniture. They’ll learn how

Atlantans rose up in the 1960s and ’70s to save the landmark from becoming a parking lot, and they’ll walk the same halls once traveled by Elvis, the Rolling Stones and Madonna.

The Fox was commissioned and

built by the Shriners, a frater-nity for men, who intended to build their own mosque. Despite its intricate detail, the building took just 18 months to complete. Every room reflects inspiration from ancient Egypt and the Middle East — from the authentic hieroglyphics on the ceiling in the Egyptian Ballroom to the auditorium designed to look like the open courtyard of a Middle Eastern palace. The Egyptian Ballroom is embel-lished with more than 500 hand-carved symbols includ-ing a ceiling covered with stars, which symbolizes the deceased pharaohs of Egypt.

The Grand Salon is cov-ered with about 3,350 square feet of terrazzo floors made mainly of crushed marble. Despite suffering smoke dam-age in 1996, the skylight’s stained glass panels have been replaced and restored.

Johnny’s Hideaway, the swinging Buckhead nightspot, makes a notable cameo in the 2011 movie Hall Pass. The Farrelly Brothers set their raunchy comedy in New England but filmed

most of it here. An establishing shot shows Johnny’s from out front, then segues indoors (Sinatra Room, King’s Corner, anyone?) as suburban dads Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis spectacularly fail to pick up women. I overheard a guy say, ‘It is nice we do not need to change many things for this ’70s shot.’ I am not sure how to take that. :-)” Atlanta has become so popular that some productions must shoot around each other to use a prized spot. The Georgia Archives Building across from the Capitol is state-owned but popular for its versatility, says Lee Thomas, director of the Georgia Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Office. Both Identity Thief (with Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman) and Anchorman 2 used it. The influx of film production shows Atlanta is more architecturally diverse than we might realize. Midtown’s Biltmore Hotel became New York’s Waldorf Astoria in the Jackie Robinson biopic 42. Georgia Tech imitated Google headquarters for the Vince Vaughn/Owen Wilson comedy The Internship. The Georgia State Capital became an aban-doned hotel for an action scene in the post-

industrial America of NBC’s “Revolution.” (Perhaps the most incongruous match of subject matter and location is CBGB, an upcoming film about the legendary 1970s punk nightclub, being shot in Savannah.) Filming can happen almost any-where. Castleberry Hill has been the site for Scary Movie 5, Identity Thief, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, MTV’s “Teen Wolf” and Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confession of a Marriage Counselor, which filmed in a 12,000-square-foot loft. Atlanta’s intown neighborhoods are known for their diverse architecture. Location scouts can tell from the curb which houses can pass as homes from specific generations. “We see a lot of productions go into Inman Park, Druid Hills and the Pullman Yards on Roger Street,” says Thomas. “But it’s spread out a lot more than usual. We see period stories like Lawless and Get Low shot in the mountains. We’ve got plenty of zombie apocalypse stuff, and a lot of The Hunger Games is shot here.”

Perhaps the most eagerly awaited Atlanta production this year, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (due Nov. 22) used the Goat Farm as impoverished District 12, home of Jennifer Lawrence’s plucky heroine. Originally a complex of 19th-century industrial build-ings, the Goat Farm can pretty easily be made to resemble another century, or a landscape after the fall of civilization as we know it. Catching Fire also used Buckhead’s Swan House mansion and grounds to con-vey the opulence of the decadent Capital. Perhaps no Atlanta location of recent years has been more iconic than Freedom Parkway, thanks to the gridlocked, apoca-lyptic scene from the pilot episode of “The Walking Dead,” which became the cover of the first season DVD. The “Dead” also walked through downtown’s Fairlie-Poplar district and the Cobb Energy Center, which stood in for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Most recently, “The Walking Dead” filmed much of its third season in Senoia (population 3,307),

where businesses like the Main Street Fudge Shop capitalize on their new fame with “zom-bie fudge” and “Woodbury” mugs in honor of the fictional stronghold against the undead. The influx of film production has made “spot the celebrity” one of Atlanta’s favorite games. Robin Williams did a set at the Laughing Skull, Dakota Fanning celebrated her 19th birthday at STK, Reese Witherspoon got a DUI on Peachtree and, in the coolest appearance of all, Kevin Bacon appeared at Dad’s Garage Theatre’s BaconFest fundraiser a year ago. Owen Wilson apparently turns up everywhere, from the Museum of Art to the city’s hippest restaurants, so he’s seeing a lot more than Johnny’s Hideaway these days.

Atlanta-based film and theater writer Curt Holman has won awards for his critical writing from the Association of Alternative Newsmedia and the Society of Professional Journalists. In 2005, he was a National Endowment for the Arts fellow in theater and musical theater.

More than 350 people attended the UNICEF Experience on April 28 at Atlanta’s Mason Murer Fine Art. UNICEF ambassador and HGTV personality Vern Yip,

along with leadership committee members Barbarella Diaz, Enid Draluck, Rebecca Gupta, Jeri Moran and Sarah Walton hosted the return of the interactive event, which gives guests firsthand experience in what children in developing countries face just to stay alive. An array of interactive exhibits showcased UNICEF’s core programs, and Atlanta-based artist Charly Palmer led guests in creating original works of art that represent UNICEF’s mission to ensure the survival and development of every child in the world.

The evening raised more than $325,000. Dan Brutto, U.S. Fund for UNICEF national board member and president of UPS International, was honored with the 2013 Global Philanthropist Award for his commitment to saving and improving chil-dren’s lives globally. For more than 10 years, UPS has helped millions of children and families through its partnership with UNICEF, providing significant support for the agency’s emergency preparedness and rapid-response efforts during humanitarian crises.

Atlanta’s UNICEF Experience Youth Board members (ages 7-17) were on-site to educate guests about the impact of UNICEF’s work in water and sanitation, emergencies, education, nutrition and protection.
