Dream ThemesLast night while you were sleeping,
did you go back to school and take anexam you hadn’t studied for? Or didyou, perhaps, look in a mirror andwince at some missing teeth? If so,you were far from alone. Whileeveryone’s dreams are unique, manymental health professionals agree thatcertain universal themes are symbolic.
Falling. Perhaps the most commondream theme, falling connotes afeeling of insecurity or loss of control.
Flying. Soaring through the airexpresses confidence and control ofone’s circumstances.
Being chased. Running away fromsomeone in a dream may denote areal-life avoidance of confrontation.
Running but going nowhere. Thedreamer might be overwhelmed withobligations.
Returning to school. Dreams ofbeing unprepared for a test mayreflect stress and pressure in thedreamer’s work life.
Losing teeth. Some dream analystscompare teeth to words. Feeling upsetin a dream because teeth are fallingout could represent regret over wordssaid in waking life. Other experts sayteeth symbolize power in dreams, because we use them for eating andexpression. Losing teeth gives youless “bite.”
Being undressed in public. If thisembarrasses the dreamer, it mightportray a real-life sense of hidingsomething or lack of preparation.
