As summer temperaturessizzle, many seek relief fromthe sun. Few homeowners,however, put the sun to workfor them, making for coolerhomes and lower electricalbills.

From passive solar designto more recent innovations,incorporating solar energy inthe home is easier than ever.Extended tax breaks havemade these upgrades moreaffordable and have helpedspur a burgeoning “green” jobmarket.

“Solar energy has becomea small business and jobsengine,” says Monique Hanis,director of communicationsfor the Washington, D.C.-based Solar EnergyIndustries Association. “Theindustry grew 37 percent lastyear. For the consumer, thebenefit is more competition.”Other benefits are tax credits.

“The federal governmentoffers a 30-percent tax creditto taxpayers who install resi-dential solar panels or waterheaters, extended to 2016,with no cap,” Hanis says. Youcan also find information onyour state’s solar incentivesfrom www.dsireusa.org, theDatabase of State Incentivesfor Renewables & Efficiency.

And, of course, there’s theenvironmental impact. “Solarenergy is clean, renewable –unlike gas, oil and coal – anddoes not contribute to cli-mate change, acid rain orsmog,” says Anca Novacovici,president of Eco Coach, Inc.,a Washington, D.C.-basedconsulting company. “It doesnot pollute our air by releas-ing carbon dioxide, nitrogenoxide, sulphur dioxide ormercury into the atmospherelike many traditional formsof electrical generation do.”

Trellis-mount-ed systems are a popularchoice, providing additionalshade to patios or other livingspaces while remaining lessvisible than some othermounting options.” Newtracking technology enablessolar panels to collect moresunlight, which translates tosmaller electricity bills.

“A kilowatt tracking sys-tem, which is a solar arraythat follows the sun through-out the day, is 35 percentmore efficient than an identi-cal stationary system,”

Novacovici says. How much of a system do

you need to power yourhome? A 2.5 kilowatt systemmounted on the roof is usual-ly enough for a family, shesays. Solar electricity costsabout $10 to $12 per wattinstalled, depending on thecontractor and companyused and any incentives.

The amount of energy ahomeowner can save byinstalling solar panels varies,depending on location, size ofsystem and household use ofenergy. “That said, one cansay that typical residential PVsystems offset 25 percent to50 percent of electricity use,”Harris says

According to the U.S.Department of Energy, anEnergy Star-qualified solarwater heating system can cut

a household’s annual hotwater cost in half. Solar com-bined with a backup gas-stor-age water heater can save$190 in electricity bills; thesavings go up to $250 annu-ally with an electric tankwater heater back-up.Savings are even more forlarge families with greaterhot water needs.

The average cost of a solarhot water system for a typicalhome ranges from $4,000 to$11,000, Hanis says, depend-ing on the type of system.Thanks to federal tax credits,a solar system can take lessthan 10 years to pay for itself.It also pays off for the envi-ronment.

An Energy Star-qualifiedsolar water heater will pre-vent 4,000 pounds of carbondioxide from entering theatmosphere each year, whichis equivalent to not driving acar for four months. The life

expectancy of qualified solarwater heating systems aver-ages 20 years, longer than gasor electric storage waterheaters.

Passive solar is best imple-mented with the help of anarchitect or other residentialbuilding expert, who mayalso suggest adding daylight-ing techniques, such asSolatubes, skylights andclerestory windows to ahome.

has come into – or rather,outside – the home.

Many home decoratingretailers, garden shops andeven hardware stores nowsell the popular outdoor solarwalkway lights for as little as$3 each, capturing the sun’slight and converting it toelectricity. A solar poweredporch light typically costs lessthan $50, Novacovici says,and a garden path lightranges from $30 to $100.

“Solar LED lights arebecoming more prevalentand less expensive,” she says.These can be used as stringlights on walkways, patiosand gardens.

“This Old House” veteran RichardTrethewey knows a great outdoorshower when he sees one. And theplumbing and heating expert has noqualms about borrowing an inspireddesign – consider it sharing inspira-tion.

“I borrowed the design for an out-door shower on my home from one Isaw in Buck’s Harbor, Maine,” he says.“The construction of the shower inMaine came just high enough to coverthe necessary body parts but left thehead exposed so you could see theocean and the sun rise or set, depend-ing on time of day. It was spectacular.”

With the economy as it is, home-owners might be thinking that thiskind of inspiration could be hard tocome by, but out-of-the-home showerexperiences are just hitting theirstride.

“Historically, the outdoor showerconsisted of two pipes that connectedto one spout, and you were luckyenough to get a decent temperature asthe water trickled out,” Tretheweyexplains. But as technology improvesindoors, perks to bathing al frescoarrive on the scene. While Tretheweynotes progressive plumbing upgrades,the look and designs of outdoor show-ers also get a modern makeover.

“Since 2007, the aspiration of theMcMansion has been replaced withmaking use of current, existing homesby integrating interiors with the out-doors,” says Diana Schrage, seniorinterior designer at Kohler, Wis.-based Kohler.

Some clients install outdoor show-ers to accompany a pool, explainsAlan W. Zielinski, the 2010 vice pres-ident of the National Kitchen andBath Association. “However, we areseeing a lot of outdoor showers thatare integrated into the master bed-room suite with a private Zen-likegarden. The shower heads for outdoorshowers have a much finer spray thatcreates a softer effect. When design-ing an outdoor shower, it’s importantto chose materials that complementwarmth and serenity for a natural andrelaxing experience that takes youaway from the stresses of everydaylife.”

Topping off the feel of the flow,Kohler has a partnership withBaltimore-based Polk Audio to createSoundTiles. “The significance of theshower has expanded for consumersand this musical feature makesbathing phenomenal,” Schrage says.“Today’s technology can produce alow flow body spray that is absolutelyvelvety while using substantially lesswater.”

Think beyond body bathing andmake sure you have an exit path forexcess water. Avoid a slippery mess bybuilding a base for bathers to stand onthat allows water to drain. Installhandrails to make the shower user-friendly for all ages. Opt for lever han-dles to add a degree of ease to theoperation.

And go green by looking for theEnvironmental Protection Agency’sWaterSense logo to ensure eco-friend-ly plumbing.
