Summertime Fun!Summer is a great time to visit the Senior Center. be a “tourist” for a day on one of our day trips. Enjoy scenic northwest trails on one of our hikes/walk. (Pages 8 &9) There are also bbQ’s on our patios (Page 10) and special events throughout the city.

Start off the month of July with the annual July 4th Festival in Les gove Park. be sure to visit granny’s Pie Shack at the Senior Center for a great slice of pie. we are also looking for volunteers to help work in our Pie Shack.

If adventure is your thing, sign up for paragliding off of Tiger Mt. (Pg 5). Learn some new cooking ideas at our new “Pots and Plans” class (Pg 11)

Enjoy locally grown produce and events at the auburn International Farmers Market, Sundays from 10 am – 3pm. Senior appreciation day is July 5.

volunteers are the heart of the Center. august 11th we are hosting a banana Split feed on our patio to thank them. all Senior Center volunteers are invited to enjoy a tasty treat, our shady patio, and visiting with fellow volunteers. This is one way of thanking you for all the hard work you do. (Pg. 10)

The heat getting too much for you? remember the Senior Center is air conditioned. we are open 8 am to 9 pm Mondays – wednesdays. Stop by to cool off, enjoy lunch (including a great salad bar), watch a movie on wednesdays, play a game of cards, or just to cool off with a large glass of iced tea and visit with friends.

Summer Parking Lot remindersLes gove Park is very busy during the summer months. This means lots of young children in the park and parking lots. watch for small ones who might jump out into the road. be sure to watch your speed too. The speed limit is 10 mph.

Extra people also mean that it may be harder to find a parking spot. we do put Senior Center Parking only signs up, but this is a public park and parking spaces are open to all. Hikers, walkers and day long trip goers are encouraged to park in the Parks and recreation Administration lot. It is important to have the spots close to the Senior Center available for daily drop in use. Thank you for your corporation.

BurrOuGHS mt* miLeS: 6 rAtinG: 4burroughs Mountain is part of an old lava flow that was ex-posed as softer earth was eroded. The trail begins at 6400 feet of elevation and moves sharply up hill to Sourdough ridge and Frozen Lake. Hikers reach First burroughs at 2.4 miles at 7100 feet. a short drop and a climb of .75 miles get hikers to Second burroughs and views of Emmons and winthrop glaciers close enough to touch. The trail has lots of exposed rock and the high starting elevation can seem challenging. we start slow and hikers do well. The 4 rating for this hike has much to do with the starting elevation of 6400 feet.Aug 14 F 7:30a- 5p $10/$13 43573

SnOQuALmie tunneL miLeS: 5 rAtinG: 2Starting at Hyak hikers will head west along the John wayne Pioneer Trail through a 2.3 mile long tunnel. The trail follows the right of way of the Chicago-Milwaukee-St. Paul railroad. The tunnel was built in 1912. after leaving the tunnel hikers will continue 1.5 more miles to connect with the .7 mile trail to the aschel Curtis trail head. The tunnel is dark and drippy. Hikers will need a light for the tunnel, layered clothing, and will enjoy their trekking poles for the descent to the trail head at the end.Aug 28 F 9a- 4:30p $10/$13 43574

nACHeS LOOP miLeS: 4 rAtinG:2+Panoramic views will greet hikers on this loop hike on Chi-nook Pass. beginning at Tipsoo Lake the trail goes up hill to cross Chinook Pass. Hiking in a clockwise direction hikers will experience vistas to the east and along the spine of the Cascades across Dewey Lakes in the valley below. weather permitting Mt. rainier will be directly a head of us as we complete the loop.Jul 10 F 9a- 5p $10/$13 43569

SKYSCrAPer PASS* miLeS: 7 rAtinG:4For the first 1.4 miles share the trail with hikers to Fremont Lookout. Then join the wonderland Trail and the opportu-nity to lunch with mountain goats. The 1300 feet of eleva-tion gain will take hikers to views of granite Falls tumbling from the winthrop glacier and Sluiskin Mountain. The trail offers no tree cover so bring lots of water and accessible snacks. The 4 rating for this hike has much to do with the starting elevation of 6400 feet and the fact the elevation is gained, lost and regained throughout the hike.Jul 24 F 7:30a- 5p $10/$13 43570

FreemOnt LOOKOut* miLeS: 5.4 rAtinG:4The hike begins at the Sunrise parking lot and climbs steadily to join the Sourdough ridge Trail. Skirting Frozen Lake the trail turns south and climbs to the lookout. Enjoy eye popping views in all directions. This hike begins at 6400 feet elevation and reaches 7181 feet. Hikers will prob-ably notice the effect of the altitude on their breathing. To-tal elevation gain is only 781 feet but will seem like more.Jul 31 F 7:30a- 5p $10/$13 43571

SHeeP LAKe* miLeS: 4 Or 6 rAtinG:2+ Or 3an annual favorite the Sheep Lake trail traverses the steep slope above Highway 410 for 1.2 miles then turns inland through the forest to a beautiful alpine lake. Hikers may stop here or continue on for another steeper mile of switchbacks to Sour Dough gap. The payoff is spectacular views including Mt. St. Helens. Expect exposed roots and rocks.Aug 7 F 8:30a- 5p $10/$13 43572
