MERCY’S MEASURE “Have You Found Your Treasure?”

A couple of weeks ago, I received a beautiful thank you note from someone who was grateful for all the things I have been doing. The person was particularly grateful for the faith that pushes me to be positive in the midst of our many crises. While the note was nice to receive, I thought, “I’ve done nothing special.” I am simply guarding and sharing that great treasure I discovered many years ago (and still discover daily) which is Jesus Christ. A lot of people have faith. A lot more are baptized. These have either left their faith behind or don’t take it as a serious part of their lives. But there are way too many of us who have never found our treasure. These are the people who spend a lifetime looking for something more or the meaning of life. Maybe they thought they had it as a child and are hoping to “re-capture” that treasure once again. Others are disillusioned because their religion, or at least their practice of religion, has left them feeling unfulfilled. Some will bounce from experience to experience, from church to church, from belief to belief in their treasure hunt. Some will experience finding their treasure many times, but then something will disenchant them or tire them or they no longer “feel” like they used to feel with that prayer, with that preacher, with that faith. This will make them move on to something else. While some people have a “book of the month club,” others seem to have a “faith of the month” club. There are also people who are “spiritual” but not religious. Their prayer is so personal that they cannot be “constrained” by religious practices. The funny thing is, God only reveals Himself in a religious way: Abraham, Buddha, Mohammed, Jesus Christ. Satan, on the other hand, reveals himself as free from all religious ties! Spirituality without religion is deceiving and self-absorbed. True spirituality calls us beyond ourselves, binds us together and moves us toward the “OTHER”—God. There are those who think that faith is a foolish embrace of ignorance over science. They are the foolish ones! People who have real faith study the Bible and the world we live in. They see facts, not fiction. They look to God to explain what cannot be explained and to guide them where there is no road. They are not fooled by preachers who babble on about commandments or who pretend to know God apart from everyone else. God is truth, so if we want to know God, we must seek the truth. But don’t stop there! God is also love. God is FIRST, love. Thus, knowing God, faith in God is all about loving God. The truth is, we only love those who love us (despite what the Bible says). Because God loves us first and best of all, those who seek God grow to love God as well. Once we love God (because God loves us), then we might learn how to love our enemies and those we do not know—only because we are already loved completely by God. And perhaps then, we find the treasure of faith which will change and guide our lives forever. I remember realizing while reading the Bible that God loves me completely. It was at that moment that I decided to spend my life loving God as best as I could, although I was not sure how. It was the day I found my treasure! Peace,

LA MEDIDA DE LA MERCED “¿Ha Encontrado Su Tesoro?”

Hace unas semanas, recibí una hermosa nota de agradecimiento de alguien que estaba agradecido por todas las cosas que he estado haciendo. La persona estaba particularmente agradecida por la fe que me anima a ser positivo en medio de nuestras muchas crisis. Mientras que la nota fue agradable de recibir, yo pensé: “No he hecho nada especial”. Yo simplemente guardo y comparto ese gran tesoro que descubrí hace muchos años (y cual aún descubro día tras día), nuestro Señor Jesucristo.

Mucha gente tiene fe. Muchos más se bautizan. Ellos han abandonado su fe o no la aceptan como parte esencial de sus vidas. Pero hay demasiados de nosotros que nunca hemos encontrado nuestro tesoro. Estas son las personas que pasan toda una vida buscando algo más o el significado de la vida. Tal vez pensaron que lo habían encontrado en la niñez y esperan “recapturar” ese tesoro una vez más. Otros están desilusionados porque su religión, o al menos su práctica de la religión, los ha dejado sintiéndose insatisfechos. Algunos saltarán de una experiencia a otra, de una iglesia a otra, de una creencia a otra en su búsqueda de ese tesoro. Algunos experimentarán encontrar su tesoro muchas veces, pero entonces algo los desencantará o los cansará, o ya no “se sentirán” como solían sentirse al rezar esa oración, al escuchar ese predicador, o con esa fe. Esto hará que se enfoquen en otra cosa más. Mientras que algunas personas tienen un “club del libro del mes”, otras parecen tener un “club de la fe del mes”. También hay personas que son “espirituales” pero no religiosas. Su oración es tan personal que no pueden ser “restringidos” por las prácticas religiosas. Lo curioso es que Dios sólo se revela de una manera religiosa: Abraham, Buda, Mahoma, Jesucristo. ¡Satanás, por otro lado, se revela libre de todo lazo religioso! La espiritualidad sin religión es engañosa y ensimismado. La verdadera espiritualidad nos lleva más allá de nosotros mismos, nos une y nos guía hacia el “OTRO”— Dios. Hay quienes piensan que la fe es un abrazo absurdo de la ignorancia sobre la ciencia. ¡Ellos son los insensatos! Las personas que tienen verdadera fe estudian la Biblia y el mundo en el que vivimos. Ven hechos, no ficción. Miran a Dios para explicar lo que no se puede explicar y para guiarlos donde no hay camino o solución. No son engañados por predicadores que hablan disparates acerca de los mandamientos o que pretenden conocer a Dios más allá de todos los demás. Dios es verdad, así que si queremos conocer a Dios, debemos buscar la verdad. ¡Pero no se detenga ahí! Dios también es amor. Dios es PRIMERO, amor. Por lo tanto, conociendo a Dios, la fe en Dios se refiere a amar a Dios. La verdad es que sólo amamos a los que nos aman (a pesar de lo que dice la Biblia). Porque Dios nos ama primero y lo mejor de todo es que aquellos que buscan a Dios también crecen para amar a Dios. Una vez que amamos a Dios (porque Dios nos ama), entonces podríamos aprender a amar a nuestros enemigos y a aquellos que no conocemos, sólo porque ya somos amados plenamente por Dios. Y tal vez entonces, encontraremos el tesoro de la fe que cambiará y guiará nuestra vida para siempre. Yo recuerdo que me di cuenta mientras leía la Biblia que Dios me ama plenamente. Fue en ese momento que decidí pasar mi vida amando a Dios dando lo mejor de mí, aunque no estaba seguro de cómo poderlo hacer. ¡Ese fue el día que encontré mi tesoro! Paz,

First, please know of my prayers for you and your parishioners during this difficult time.

I write to you to share a change in the timeline for the Renew My Church discernment process, which directly impacts your parish and the neighboring parishes in your grouping. Given the challenges posed by the pandemic, including the temporary closure of churches across the Archdiocese, the RMC launch timeline is being re-evaluated for each grouping in the Archdio-cese.

Your grouping will begin to engage the RMC discernment process regarding the future parish structures this Fall 2020. A specific schedule for local conversations will be set in the coming weeks. For parishes that had not been planning to actively engage in the RMC process this year, I know this is a significant shift. Your planning for the 2020-21 has already been disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic and the significant work required to re-open our churches. The Renew My Church staff, the Vicariate II Team, and I are committed to supporting you throughout the upcoming process.

While the first part of the RMC process will focus on the possible structural and business changes necessary for our community, it is important to keep in mind these changes are necessary to prepare us up to focus on spiritual and ministerial renewal moving forward. Renew My Church is about making disciples, building communities, and inspiring witness of our faith. To most effectively work on those three imperatives, we need a sustainable organizational and facility structure.

You will receive more information to share with your parishion-ers in the coming weeks about what to expect of the Renew My Church grouping discernment process. The Renew My Church staff will work with you on an appropriate schedule for how best to engage the discernment process in your grouping.

We do not know what the outcomes of the discernment process will be, but we do know that things cannot remain as they are. We also know the Lord remains with us, and we will be strengthened by keeping each other in prayer. You remain in my prayers. Please keep me in yours.

Les escribo para que compartan un cambio en las fechas calendarizadas para el proceso de discernimiento Renueva Mi Iglesia (o RMC), que afecta directamente a su parroquia y a las parroquias vecinas en su agrupación. Dados los desafíos planteados por la pandemia, incluido el cierre temporal de las iglesias en toda la Arquidiócesis, se están reevaluando las fechas del calendario del lanzamiento de RMC para cada agrupación en la Arquidiócesis.
