This is it. You’re sure. You’ve nally found your kindred spirit and you’ve decided you want to marry her. But how do you pop the question? When is the best time? What will sweep your loved one off her feet?

A marriage proposal is a unique occasion, one that your true love has likely dreamed of since she was a little girl. Don’t let this moment blend in with all the others in a day; try to plan a meaning-ful proposal so that the moment remains un forgettable for her. Here are a few sugges-tions.

If you spend your nights together, wait for your loved one to open her eyes in the morning and in those rst moments ask her

tenderly if she will marry you. Rent an advertising panel at a sport event so that your marriage pro-posal will be ashed around the stadium at half-time, and invite the sports announcer ahead of time to draw

the crowd’s attention to it.

Plan a trip in a hot air balloon, your head in the clouds and your heart racing wildly. Far from the daily stress and noise of the city, this is a unique place to declare your love and ask the woman of your dreams to spend her life with you.

If the Internet is a part of your daily lives, you could make your proposal during a chat session, with witness-es to boot, or buy an advertising banner at a website she visits regu-larly. If you would like to propose in a more traditional way, ask the big question in a park, next to a lake, or dur-ing a romantic candlelit dinner.

No matter how you decide to pop the ques-tion, the essential goal is to touch her heart. Because you know her so well, you’re sure to nd the perfect for-mula!

How you propose is as important as the proposal itself

From taking a knee at a restaurant to more unique and inventive ways of proposing, how you ask Mr. or Mrs. Right to marry you makes all the difference.

More than half of young couples choose to rent a hall with a caterer for their wed-ding reception. That means there is prob-ably a lot of competi-tion for the reception room you’ve got your eye on!

Depending on the sea-son, many of the choic-est wedding halls are reserved a long time in advance, usually several months or even years ahead of time. Planning a winter wedding might afford you some leeway in choice and availabil-ity, since the peak sea-son occurs during the summer months.

This means it’s impor-tant to decide on the kind of place you’d like as soon as possible and to start looking without delay. In order to avoid disappointment, start phoning halls and other suitable venues as soon as you become engaged.

Be sure to make an appointment to visit any places you think would be suitable. Bear in mind that it is wise to choose a place that is not too far from where family and friends live. Another factor to weigh

is its proximity to your church or City Hall.

While many halls are designed and staffed with wedding recep-tions in mind, there are several other options worth looking at: coun-try restaurant, vineyard, social club, chalet, park, yours or a friend’s backyard, boat, or ball-room in a grand hotel. Just keep in mind that in addition to the beauty

of the site, the comfort of your guests ought to be taken into account.

No matter your bud-get or whether you live downtown or close to the country, there are plenty of alternatives for a wonderful wed-ding party.

Finding the spot for a wedding or reception should be done sooner rather than later.

The brochures spread out on the table in front of you are overwhelm-ing: how to choose the best caterer for your wedding meal? There are several things to

consider that will help you make your choice.

Begin by inviting esti-mates for various menus from ve or six differ-ent caterers. Be bold enough to play with

the competitive fac-tor between caterers to negotiate a better price per plate. You can then compare their ser vices and prices.

Don’t hesitate to ques-

tion the caterer on differ-ent points: is he or she experienced in wedding banquets? How many other weddings will they be catering that week-end? Are they classic or creative? Can they offer references?

It is wise to make an appointment with your short-listed caterers to taste both the wine and the dishes they are pro-posing. Take advantage of this occasion to check the amount of food per serving. If you are not able to taste the menus, check the references they have given you and ask former clients about quality of taste and ser-vice. If you still can’t make up your mind, base your decision on the style of your wed-ding, the time of year, or the place you have cho-sen for the reception.

Check all the clauses of the estimate. It must include the total amount for all the services or separate prices for each of them, such as for the meal, drinks, corkage fee, gratuities, dishes, furniture, and serving equipment.

A delicious meal will be remembered by your guests, so do your homework before mak-ing your choice. PHOTO SUBMITTED

Don’t hesitate to interview and taste the food from local caterers before choosing who will cater your most special day.

Finding a caterer can take frustration out of your wedding

What to wearThink about you and

your sweetie in the el-egant look of old Hol-lywood; the groom in

tails, and the bride in a white long silk dress with a white fur or faux fur wrap. Evoke the season with “ice” – di-amond or diamond-like jewelry. 90% of wed-

ding dresses are strap-less or sleeveless, but that’s not so practical for a bride who wants to take pictures outside, or needs to walk any dis-tance. Look for wraps,

shrugs, and capes, or dramatic coats. I’ve al-ways loved the look of a bride in a white dress and a large red shawl, huddled against her groom who has a red boutonnière. And don’t forget your brides-

maids! An attractive wrap to wear on the day of your wedding and beyond makes a great bridesmaid present.

Where to Have a Winter Wedding

Look for an inn with a

replace for an intimate winter wedding. For a larger affair, you may be able to use a historic mansion or private club that will still have in-timate warmth. Unless you’re getting married in a province that will have guaranteed snow during your wedding date, avoid a room that has a large picture win-dow. You may imagine drifts of beautiful snow, and end up with a grey rainy day. Be sure to ask what seasonal decorations they use – you’ll save money as many sites are already heavily decorated. Also, check to make

sure your site will be adequately heated dur-ing the winter months; old churches can be es-pecially drafty.

Planning the MenuYou can have all of

your favorite food but add some winter touch-es like a squash dish, or warm pumpkin soup. Consider serving egg-nog, spiced wine, or hot chocolate (alcoholic or non-) as special treats. Look for an all-white cake, decorated with snow ake patterns, sil-ver embellishments, or sugar sculptures. Ask your caterer about us-ing a decorative snow

Planning a winter wedding isn’t as daunting as you think

FlowersDecide whether you

want to go for a silver and white elegant look, or celebrate the season with reds and greens. For those who like silver, look for dusty miller, silver-dollar eu-calyptus, and baby blue eucalyptus, mixed with white owers such as roses, football mums, crocus, lilies and steph-anotis. If you’re look-ing for a brighter bou-quet, consider red roses with holly and pine-tree greenery. In season

owers such as tulips, roses, and ornamental berries generally will be less expensive choices. (Talk to your orist, as your region may have different availability)

The Décor for Your Winter Wedding

Decorate your tables with simple and inex-pensive white poinset-tias, or ll the room with light by arranging pillar candles on a bed of pine branches At the after-Christmas sales, stock up on strands of small white lights, then string them decoratively

around doorways, over tables and on archways. Bright red cranberries in a bowl surrounding oating candles make

an easy and inexpen-sive centerpiece. Look at this article for other simple holiday center-pieces.. Or, decorate a pre-made gingerbread house for each table, and center it on a bed of greenery with candles around it.

FavorsIf you and most of

your guests celebrate Christmas, an orna-ment makes a perfect

favor. An inexpensive homemade favor is a pretty tin of spiced hot chocolate mix or hot cocoa mix with marsh-mallows. Also consider a snow globe, with a bride and groom inside, or a holiday cookie cut-ter with a cookie recipe attached that says your names, wedding date, and “truly cut out for each other”.

These days every-one is thinking about the environment, even when it comes to plan-ning a wedding. Here are a few suggestions

for an eco-friendly day. For the bride’s bou-

quet choose local wild owers, such as irises,

daisies, or lavender. For boutineers and corsag-

es, some leafy green-ery will add a touch of originality to your bridal procession and advertise your commit-ment to being green.

You could also replace the traditional table cen-trepieces with displays of freshly picked apples from a neighbouring orchard — perfect if you’re getting married in September.

Have your invitations printed on FSC-certi ed 100 per cent recycled paper. For your thank-you cards, choose sta-tionery made from paper in which wild ower are embedded; this kind of paper is available in many garden centres. For your ceremony and reception, choose locations that are eas-ily accessible in order to cut down on car engine emissions.

Brides who love their mother’s or grandmoth-

er’s wedding gowns can have them altered by a seamstress. Or, rather than buying a ready-to-wear dress made in China, brides can have the design of their choice sewed by a local dressmaker. Buying a beautiful, recycled wed-ding band in gold or sil-ver is another great way to be green. The rings can be personalized in the same way as tra-ditional rings. Wedding rings that belonged to family members are also a meaningful option — after all, the Duchess of Cambridge was quite happy to accept Princess Diana’s engagement ring!

There is something wonderfully old-school about an eco-friendly wedding.

Speeches from the head table can make people cringe or cry. If you’re sitting alongside the bride and groom this year, take some time to prepare a speech that will touch the couple’s hearts and charm their guests.

As you think about what to say, remember that this reception will already be charged with emotion and nerves. The couple and their fami-lies have likely spent months preparing for this day, seeing to every tiny detail. Take some time ahead of the big day to jot down a few ideas; you don’t want your speech to be the one regrettable contribu-tion to the event.

There’s nothing worse than a never-ending speech in the middle of a wedding meal. If you’re the father of the bride, limit your speech

to a just a few pertinent memories and a hearty “Welcome to the fam-ily!” for your new son-in-law. If you’re the best man, it may tempt you to bring up some embar-rassing references to the groom’s glory days, but do save the lurid bach-elor party memories for the next guys’ night out.

This is the moment to take a risk and put your feelings into what you say. The bride and groom will be touched and grateful. If public speaking frightens you, practice your speech at home or refer to an index-card where you’ve noted your main points.

Perhaps the most important speech of all: the newly married couple must thank their guests for sharing in their celebration as well as all those who helped them organize the wed-ding.

Consider having an eco-friendly wedding

The perfect speech

You will find that having someone at your wedding who has been hired to capture the most special moments will leave you with a better wedding album than leaving it to friends and family to take the pictures. After all, the photographer has a vested interest in taking the best pictures or video possible, as they want your refer-ence for future jobs.

PHOTO VINCENT PHOTOGRAPHY

Hiring a profes-sional photographer or videographer means having someone at your wedding whose entire reason for being there is to catch the special mo-ments that others might miss as they enjoy the festivities.

• Have you shot a wedding at my lo-cation before?• Do you have an assistant?• Do you have backup equipment and is it the same quality as the primary equipment?• What time will you begin and how

long will you stay until?• When will the proofs be ready?• Do we get to keep the proofs?• Do we get to keep our negatives?• Do you work well with the other vendors? i.e.: coordinators, caterers, videographers.
