1.3 Sample

An analysis of the Stonnington Survey Group sample is shown in the table below. Of those respondents who provided their personal details, just over half were females (54%). The age group with the greatest representation was persons aged 45-54 years (26%). The response from 75+ years and older was very low (just one respondent). This limits the value of analysis for respondents of this age range and these results should not be regarded as representative of this age group. The largest proportions of respondents were from Malvern East (18%), Prahran (18%), and Malvern (16%) (see table 1).

2. Analysis Overview

The following commentary is an overview of the results and covers each of the questions in the survey. Further information can be obtained through the range of data images following this including graphs and tables.

Shopping locations and preferences

Question one asked respondents to indicate which shopping area they most frequently visited within Stonnington. The majority of respondents (40% / 73 respondents) selected Glenferrie Road in Malvern, which aligns with the demographic data that indicated 47% / 87 respondents lived in Armadale, Malvern or Malvern East, making Glenferrie Road the closest shopping area for the majority of respondents. The other shopping areas that were most frequently selected included Chapel Street (High Street – Toorak Road) (16% / 29 respondents) and Hawksburn Village (13% / 25 respondents).

Respondents were then asked to identify why they preferred their most frequently visited shopping area in the form of an open-ended question. A small majority of respondents chose there centre because of the variety of shops (66% / 116 respondents) closely followed by close to home (54% / 95 respondents) and good parking (13% / 23 respondents). The majority of respondents who chose the top 3 shopping areas Glenferrie Road, Chapel Street (High Street – Toorak Road) and Hawksburn Village use these centers the most because there are close to their house followed by the variety of shops.

The next part of question one asked respondents how they usually traveled to their most frequently visited shopping area. The majority (56% / 102 respondents) got to their shopping areas by car, with walking as the next most common mode of transport (40% / 73 respondents). Only two respondents (1%) cycled to their shopping area, and 5 respondents (3%) traveled by tram. No respondents traveled by train or ‘other’ modes of transport, which may reflect a preference for local shopping areas.

The survey then asked respondents to select what kind of stores they usually visited at their most used shopping area. Food services (supermarkets, green grocers, butchers etc.) were the most frequently visited with 93% (170 respondents). Cafés, bars/pubs and restaurants were the second most frequently visited shop type (63% / 115 respondents), followed by the Post Office (57% / 104 respondents), banking and insurance (53% / 97 respondents) and bookshops/newsagents (52% / 95 respondents).

When asked what they liked most about their most visited shopping area, six out of ten respondents (60% / 104 respondents) liked the variety of the shops followed by close to home (17%/30 respondents) and good parking (10% / 19 respondents). The majority of respondents who chose the top 3 shopping areas Glenferrie Road, Chapel Street (High Street – Toorak Road) and Hawksburn Village like these centers most because of the variety of shops followed by being close to their home. Question two asked to select the top three shopping areas, and identify the main reason for selecting that area. The most frequently selected areas were High Street in Armadale (35% / 64 respondents), Glenferrie Road in Malvern (33% / 60 respondents), and Hawksburn Village (29% / 53 respondents). Reasons for choosing these shopping areas included variety of shops, specific shops e.g. (Thomas Dux, Prahran Market) and close to home.

Stonnington Survey Group Page 7 of 44

Page 8: July 2015: Local Business (Connect Stonnington Group)

Question three explored respondents’ favourite shopping area which did not have to be within Stonnington, the reasons why it was their favourite area, and the how they stayed in touch with its promotion. Favorite shopping areas included Chadstone shopping centre (20% / 32 respondents), the city (19% / 30 respondents) and Glenferrie Road (14% / 22 respondents). A majority of respondents who chose the top 3 shopping areas (Chadstone shopping centre, the city and Glenferrie Road) use these centres the most due to the variety of shops.

The majority of respondents (56% / 102 respondents) did not use any of the listed media types to stay in touch with promotion of their favourite shopping area. Print media (25% / 46 respondents) was the most frequently used medium for staying up to date with their chosen area, followed by websites (10% / 19 respondents) and ‘other’ (10% / 19 respondents). Only 13 (7%) respondents used social media to keep updated on their favourite shopping area, from a total of 182 respondents for this question.

Shopping habits and changes

Question five asked respondents about changes to their expenditure on non-essential items in the twelve months preceding the survey. The majority (64% / 117 respondents) stated that their spending had stayed the same, 20% (38 respondents) said they had spent less and 14% (25 respondents) had spent more. 2 respondents (1%) did not give an answer for this question.

Online shopping

Question six asked whether respondents shopped online, and whether their online shopping patterns had changed in the twelve months preceding the survey. Many respondents stated that they did not shop online (46% / 82 respondents). Of those who did shop online (54% / 97 respondents), 29% (28 respondents) had increased their online shopping in the past twelve months. The majority of online shoppers (58% / 56 respondents) said their online shopping patterns had stayed the same, while 12% (12 respondents) said they had shopped online less.

Question seven explored what products respondents were most frequently purchasing online. Fashion (45% / 44 respondents) and books (44% / 43 respondents) were the most frequently selected option. Similar selection levels were found for electronics (31% / 30 respondents), health and beauty products (30% / 29 respondents) and music/DVDs/e-books (30% / 29 respondents). Home and garden products were purchased online by 17 respondents (17%), sports equipment was selected by 4 respondents (4%), and 25% of respondents (24 respondents) selected ‘other’ types of products as their main online purchases.

The second part of question seven asked respondents about where their most visited online store was based. Most of the respondents were shopping from stores based either interstate within Australia (40% / 39 respondents) or internationally (38% / 37 respondents). Stores within Victoria were selected as the main online source by 14% (14 respondents) and the remaining 7% (7 respondents) didn’t know the predominant origin of their online shopping purchases.

4. Verbatim Comments

1b. Why do you use this centre the most? (e.g. closest to my house, variety of shops etc.)

Access to Markets and the large supermarketsAldi's at back of market. The shops I use are in this area and close to home. Parking is a problem but I try and get there early. I wish the car parks were bigger now that lots of people have huge cars. Hootsens Bakery and Jeffreys Bookshop, not just outlets for chains. Malvern Central accomodates those. I am known up there and the shop owners treat me as if I'm part of the community.I hate shopping centres like Chadstone as they are too impersonal. Strip shopping centres are much more pleasant & user friendly.

I like Prahran Market and the libraryI like shopping local. Chapel Street is vibrant & Alive!I like that they're mostly small businesses so the person who serves you is usually the owner. 1f. Is there anything that you would like to change about your chosen shopping area?

A cinema would be nice, and increase the number of 2 hour, as opposed to one hour parks (I often cut short my time spent at the shops because I run out of parking time)A properly paved high class footpath. Pedestrian crossing next to Woolworths that has priority.A small park with grass and shade trees with cafes nearbyA specialist deliAdd more parkingAged 91 years, not having to climb uphill from the rear Safeway car parkAn improved tram service is needed. Remove parked cars and provide wider lanes for bicycles too. Then the footpaths can be widened. The narrow footpaths are a real, negative to shopping in Chapel Street.Better numbering of the shops. Can't see the street numbers clearly.better parkingBetter parking Better licensed venues eg bars, pubsBetter parking facilitiesBetter quality retail; more cafes/food shopsCHEAP OFF STREET PARKING IS NEEDED. Although I shop here it is often VERY inconvenient because of parking problems and streets jammed with cars. I have often had to return home without being able to park anywhere I need to be.ContentDifficulty in wheeling shopping trolleys to carEasier parking, completion of new Malvern ColesEncourage other people to shop elswhere so it is less crowded.Friday night shopping availablity

Get rid of the clubsGet rid of ugly American style franchises. More street art, more 'grunge' and 'quirky' shoppingGood banking availabilityGreater diversity every second place is a cafe coffee placeHalt destruction of Dairy Bell siteI am sorry the haberdashery moved to the far end of Malvern Station but I can park near it. My optometrist is near thereI really like the idea of the Cato Street car park going underground and having a green park above. More innovative food offerings in restaurants, cafes and barsI use the pedestrian crossing when in shopping in that vicinity, but further away e.g. tram depot region, when I need to cross the road there is always the challenge of finding an area of footpath to access that hasn't got 'fences' or planter boxes along the footpath making access onto the opposite footpath difficult.I wish some of the cafes were open later in the eveningsI wish the milk bar was better stocked, had clearer windows and the staff would look at and greet the customers because they don't. I rarely go in there but it could be an asset to our little strip.I would go for more trees and shrubs in the shopping area, more tiny gardens and planting. A bit of a tidy-up along the frintages. More small touched, eg planters with herbs, better signage (graphically speaking).I would like more cafes and /or restaurants. A newsagent or post office would be nice.I would like parking to be improved including making all the 2 hour parking on the street level at Jackson Street free (currently half is free and half is run by a private operator that charges a fee)improve the general appearance ie street scape/landscapeIn an ideal world it would be easier to cross from one side of the street to the other as a pedestrian. I would prefer to see traffic ONE WAY between High Street and Wattletree Road and the street traffic 30kmph. Trams would still travel along here.Increased parkingInfrastructure! More parking!!Less $2 shops and less fast food outletsless beggars and no pokies. No smoking where food is consumed. No fixed footpath screens around tablesLess below average clothing shops and better ones insteadLess designer shops, no smoking from the hawksburn hotel on Williams roadLess massage shops & less chain storesLess pubs and cafes and more shops like hardware stores. Less trafficless restaurants more mixed businessless traffic, cleaner especially at the back of shopslonger parkingMake footpath more attractive and easier for pedestrians by removing cheap merchandise, stalls and others. Café type seating looks good and creates a feeling of ambience. Business owners od have 'shop space' to display their merchandise.Maybe angle parking to create some more spaces, and to address the apparent inability of many to properly parallel park! It is truly amazing some of the

pathetic efforts to park that you can witness down there :)Messy looking with signageMore al fresco dining.more alternatives to Coles/Woolworths add cinema bring back Targetmore choiceMore convenient car parkingMore decorations during Easter and Christmas periods.More disabled carpark spaces, pleaseMore disabled parking, I used to be able to walk or cycle to the shops but I now have minor disabilities which means I can no longer do that and I have to drive

More 'down market' shops are creeping in, lessening the quality and distinctiveness of the shopping strip (eg fast cheap food outlets, discount shops)More free 2hr parking Less pop up shopsMore non-Asian restaurants in Waverley Rd so that variety within walking distanceMore outdoor green areas with trees and seats. Also more 2 hour free parking - when I go with my neighbour, it is difficult to find a park around lunch time on weekdays.more parkingmore parkingMore parkingMore parkingMore parkingMore parking - particularly now as sections of our lovely suburb are being overdeveloped with tacky flatsMore pedestrian crossings between Wattletree Rd and High St, Bring back Target to Malvern!!! SO many locals are missing Target. Although I visit Glenferrie Road as my main shopping locale and would support the local traders over big stores I rarely go to Malvern Central anymore because Target is missing for those essentials like children's clothes.More pedestrian crossings. One is needed especially near the tram depot...More places to sit down more room on the footpath.more social connections. Convert tram station to mixed housing, aged housing, social and community use. Remove all trams permanently and replace with busses.More trees, Council keeps talking about it & nothing happens!More variety of storesMove it into centre of StonningtonMove the Tram stop closer to the Woolworths SupermarketNo further developmentNo more paying for parkingno, parking OKNo.No. I am very happy with it.not reallynot really

Fine cars for double parking and parking during clearway hours. Some cars leave their car double parked to go into a shop.streets could be refreshed a bit to make it look more smarterThat you can also find and get a car park, and you don't have to buy a ticket. The high rise apartments (too late already permitted) - makes area cluttered and ordinary... loosing old world charm: our heritage. The parking system and council enforced '$2 trolleys' are very annoying. The traffic is already bad so maybe limiting trucks during peak hours. I have noticed an increase of trucks in general going through Malvern Road. Maybe because of constructions around or delivering goods? Can restrict the time for them to a quieter slot of the day?the traffic is RIDICULOUS and getting worse. Glenferrie road between Wattletree and High street is a JOKE.There is nowhere to buy small electrical goods or hardwear

Stonnington Survey Group Page 37 of 44

There reallly are enough food outlets and hairdressers along Glenferrie Road so some diversity would be good. This is my closest location for groceries and the costs are very high. My preference is to use the cheap fruit and veg place behind chapel street, Coles or the queen vic market but it's not always possible to travel to get the best variety/ pricesToiletstoo many bars, not enough fresh food storesTraffic congestion/parkingTraffic is absolutely horrific. Parking an expensive nightmare.Traffic.Urgently need bike parking which I have requested from council for many years.Wider walkways on footpaths. Will they every stop expanding? Will they connect to public transport? Will they make it easier to get around?Windsor lacks a good variety of cheaper food shops. However, this is what the 'market' wants.Yes more off street parking, the area needs to be jazzed up some what i. e. modernisedyes Prahran Market car park is a disgrace and in need of a complete steam clean. The stair wells turn into soggy steps during rainfalls. Stonnington residents should have 1 hour free parking.Yes! Since 'Red Mullet' disappeared, there isn't a decent retaurant offering take-away cooked fish. Also, there isn't a good shop offering sandwiches. I bought one in Georgio's recently which I thought was too pricey - $12, nearly $13 for a cheese & basic salad sandwich!! Won't buy one in there again.YES! Some parks and open spaces with seating AND BINS, especially at the pedestrian accesses, where people can eat their takeaways in pleasant surrounds and then discard their waste packaging in the bins provided and not in nearby Stonnington's Parks and streets. This way Centre Management is responsible for the it's own litter and not Stonnington Council or local residents.
