Thanks to four straight years of export growth, Gulf South Forest Products (GSFP) was recognized at the White House with the government’s top export award. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla.,-based company received the President’s “E” Award for Exports from U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary John Bryson in May. This award is the highest recognition awarded to companies making a significant contribution to growing U.S. exports, which also helps grow the national economy and create jobs.

Bryson presented the award to GSFP CEO Sam Yohanan and President John Yohanan on May 17 in the Indian Treaty Room as part of World Trade Week events. Only 41 U.S. companies received the honor this year. “This administration is committed to leveling the playing field for American businesses and workers to help U.S. companies build things here and sell them around the world,” said Secretary Bryson in a press release.

“‘E’ Award winners such as Gulf South Forest Products have excelled in this effort, demonstrating four years of successive export growth. It is companies like this that are helping to grow our economy and put more Americans back to work.” In 2010, President Barack Obama announced plans to double U.S. exports over the next five years.

“We feel honored to be selected,” said John Yohanan. “It’s a welcome recognition for our team’s hard work over the last four years.” The U.S. Commercial Service nominates U.S. companies for “E” Awards, which are based primarily on four years of continued export growth. Recipients demonstrate a significant contribution to the country’s export expansion that is “measurable, innovative, sustainable and has broad impact.” Nominations are reviewed by the awards committee, chaired by the U.S. Department of Commerce. It includes representatives from Exim Bank, the Small Business Administration, and the Departments of Agriculture, Labor, State and Transportation.

GSFP opened its doors in 1987 and sells wood products, including lumber, plywood and utility poles, to clients in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, China and 20 other countries. Approximately 95 percent of its sales are exported from the United States. The company annually ships more than 103 million board feet.

“Growing our sales abroad an average of 20 percent per year for the past four years can be attributed to our expertise, service and product,” said Beverly Mullen, special projects coordinator for GSFP. The company regularly charters ships to control costs and shipping schedules. While that can be an expensive prospect, it also allows the company to meet its clients’ needs. “We’re offering a service,” explained Sam Yohanan.

“That’s why we charter vessels: so we have control.” The company has become well known for its commitment to low costs and minimal delays and damages. “We take a lot of pride in that,” he said.

Gulf South Forest Products Receives Top U.S. Export Award

Customers who run out of lumber suffer lost sales and labor costs. “We get it to customers when they want it, not when a ship can deliver it,” said John Yohanan. In a tourism-driven country like the Dominican Republic, deliveries of forest products on a regular basis for the construction industry is vital.

Diversification has also played an integral role in GSFP’s success. “Government and trade-sponsored events —they both help us in so many ways,” said John Yohanan. Involvement in government and private programs helped the company expand its business in Asia. The company continually searches out new opportunities and new markets for U.S. forest products with the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Commercial Service, the Foreign Agriculture Service and Exim Bank. It is also involved with the American Hardwood Export Council, the Southern Forest Product Association and the Southern Lumber Exporters Association. GSFP was recently added to the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Veterans Business Database and is eligible for Veterans First Contracting Program opportunities with the VA.

The company has become especially competitive overseas, explained John Yohanan, due to a downturn in the construction industry and depressed pine lumber prices in the U.S. “We saw 10-year lows,” he said, but noted these prices made GSFP more attractive in the overseas markets, including Asia, Central America, Europe and the Caribbean. It’s also had a ripple effect, generating business for Southern sawmills.

“It’s helped them stay in business in rural areas,” said John Yohanan. “Whole towns rely on some of these industries.”

As the U.S. government recently signed free trade agreements with Korea, Colombia and Panama, Sam Yohanan hopes this will open the floodgates for more business. “We are actively pursuing Colombia and Panama; Korea is a little further down the road,” John Yohanan elaborated. GSFP has kept its eye on Cuba since 2004. When that market opens, it could be the largest market for Southern Yellow Pine in the world, said John Yohanan, explaining this was previously true in the 1950s. For the past 10 years, the Dominican Republic has been the top importer of Southern Yellow Pine. Continued growth in market share, linked to increased exports, has the potential to create jobs.

After the massive earthquake that rocked Haiti in early 2010, some of the first cargo for humanitarian efforts was loaded out of the Port of Mobile on a ship chartered by GSFP. Since then, agencies worldwide have descended on Haiti to aid in the recovery, including the building of homes and hospitals for which GSFP supplies the lumber. “That will go on for the next five to 10 years at least,” said Sam Yohanan. GSFP is currently working with the U.S. government to implement a program regarding the long-term nature of construction in that country.

To serve its global market, four of GSFP’s 11 employees are bilingual and two are trilingual, enabling the company to communicate easily in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish, Norwegian and Mandarin. Collectively, GSFP offers 150 years of cumulative experience in the business of exporting forest products.

The company has been involved with many of its overseas purchasers and clients for decades. “Relationships are very important in our business,” said John Yohanan. “We’re dealing with second- and third-generation families with our customer base. Relationships are important for us to maintain and move forward.”

The Port of Mobile has served as GSFP’s main facility for exports since the company opened 25 years ago, thanks to its central location and proximity to the sawmills the company purchases materials from, mainly located in Alabama and Mississippi. It also works with sawmills in eastern Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, North Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.

“Proximity is very important,” stressed Sam Yohanan. “We’re engaged in long-term relationships with a number of sawmills in different parts of Alabama and Mississippi.”

James K. Lyons, director and CEO for the Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA), applauded the U.S. Department of Commerce’s recognition of GSFP and congratulated Sam Yohanan and his team. “Our port is only as successful as our customers. Gulf South’s team of professionals work with my staff and other port service providers to deliver a level of service excellence that distinguishes them within the industry. Our board, staff and maritime community extend hearty congratulations on Gulf South’s receipt of this distinguished award,” said Lyons.

GSFP has a 153,000-square-foot storage/shipping facility at the Port of Mobile’s Blakely Island Terminal, allowing it to provide hands-on service to its clients. “Everything is run very efficiently at the Port of Mobile,” said Sam Yohanan, describing the leadership and services provided by the ASPA.

The lumber exporter has worked with a number of Mobile-area companies for years, including Tri-State Maritime Services

and customs broker Richard Murray & Company. “Dealing with the same people daily means a lot,” said Sam Yohanan. For John Yohanan, it also enhances the company’s control. If Tri-State representatives receive a lumber shipment that might not meet GSFP’s high standards, they call it to the company’s attention. Its stevedores also make sure each order is complete and matches what was loaded. “That helps our customers that much more,” John Yohanan said.

“That type of service is invaluable to us.”

“We serve our clients 100 percent —win, lose or draw,” said Sam Yohanan. “Exporting is the foundation of our company, and we are honored to receive the President’s ‘E’ Award. I am especially proud that we have become a leading U.S.

exporter of lumber products —opening new markets for U.S. exports, developing strong business relationships with customers and governments worldwide, and building an organization that is diverse, uniquely specialized and highly respected in our industry.”

Gulf South Forest Products' lumber was loaded onto a vessel destined for Port au Prince and the Dominican Republic. The company sells wood products to clients

in 23 countries around the globe.

The M/v MAERSK ILLINOIS was loaded with more than 12,000 metric tons of utility poles on its inaugural voyage, destined for West Africa.

Lumber and corrugated roofing was loaded onto a vessel bound for Haiti, where it was used by a charitable organization to construct temporary shelters for families living in tent cities.

What do you get when you mix concrete, limestone, a father-and-sons company started from scratch and the Gulf of Mexico? Reality television gold. This is certainly what The Weather Channel (TWC) and a California production company are hoping for with one of their latest efforts.

Gurney Productions, the company responsible for “Duck Dynasty,” is finishing production on four episodes of

“Reefmakers.” The show chronicles the work of Walter Marine, an Orange Beach company that manufactures and deploys artificial reefs around the nation. The show is set to premiere Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 8 p.m. CST.

Owner David Walter runs the company with his two sons, Stewart and Justin. Three years ago, a representative of Gurney Productions asked Walter if he would be interested in being the subject of a reality television show. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill happened shortly after, and the project was put on hold.

The producers called back this year and sent a crew to start shooting. Walter said the producers first focused on the risks associated with offshore work, but soon realized the Walter family was the real center of attention.

Walter explained that his sons have different personalities and, thus, different approaches to how they get their work done. This can sometimes lead to the kind of drama upon which reality television is built. Walter describes it as almost comedic at times.

Howard Sappington, executive producer at TWC, says the show appeals to the network on many levels. “The Gulf of

Made for TV: Alabama’s “Reefmakers”

Left to right: David Walter, owner of Walter Marine, will be featured on a reality television show, “Reefmakers,” to air on The Weather Channel this fall. Justin Walter, one of David’s sons, sometimes clashes with his brother about how work should be done around the company. One of the Walter Marine employees, Roger, works in the company salvage yard. Stewart, David Walter’s oldest son, operates a crane in the yard.

The MARANATHA uses a crane to lower reefs into the water. The vessel can deploy one structure every three minutes.

A set of Walter’s tetrahedron-shaped reefs sits in the yard, ready to be loaded onto a boat and taken into the Gulf.

Mexico is a breeding ground for bad weather and conditions that change suddenly. ‘Reefmakers’ offers a unique blend of characters with a passion for what they do. No matter the forecast, rain or shine, these guys have fun working to save a once thriving ecosystem,” he said.

Sappington went on to explain that while TWC is known for weather coverage, the network is also focused on telling stories about the environment and everyday people.

“We’re looking to branch out into more features and docudramas—more character-driven shows to give variety to the network,” he said. He added that environmental issues, such as the destruction and restoration of reefs, fit with the network’s mission.

Walter said he almost stumbled into the reef-making business. “I had a shipyard in Fairhope, Ala., when the oil field collapsed in the 1980s.” Many companies were selling off equipment for unheard-of prices, so he bought a 45-foot boat for $2,500 and started coming up with ideas of what to do with it.

“Some charter boat captains asked me to modify the boat to haul junk cars into the Gulf to dump them as reefs. I didn’t

even know that was legal. I did not think anybody would pay me to do that,” said Walter. He told the captains if they gathered 20 cars he would take the job. “They called me the next day and had 40 cars.”

The waters off the coast of Alabama are unusual in that anyone can purchase and place an artificial reef in the Gulf. The Department of Conservation has to approve the materials used, but the location of the reef can be kept a secret known only to the fishermen and the reef builder. This has fueled an entire offshore industry.

“Alabama waters have a flat, sandy bottom. If you went down with scuba gear you would not see one fish,” explained Walter. Reefs, or just about any underwater structure, will attract marine life within days. First comes the growth of plants and barnacles, then small marine animals and then the fish who eat them.

The Department of Conservation stopped allowing cars to be used as reef material, so Walter just kept changing his business with what was approved. Finally, most of what had been used for years was banned. “I had to make a decision. The only way to do this was to build a structure out of concrete. So I had to get into the reef business big-time or get out,” he said. The company still does salvage and towing work in addition to reefmaking.

Reefs continued to evolve and so did Walter’s model. He settled on a tetrahedron shape with holes cut into it. The structure looks a little like a hollow pyramid with windows. Walter uses feedback from current customers to continue to improve the design. “Some people from Broward County, Fla., sat down and said they only used limestone boulders as reefs. Limestone is the perfect pH for marine life and the surface is soft enough for marine life to bore into it,” he explained. “That got me to thinking, ‘How can I incorporate limestone?’ Well, we embed limestone rocks into the concrete!” Walter holds four patents for his artificial reef designs.

As his business grew, Walter bought and converted an old U.S. Coast Guard buoy tender to place the reefs. He named the vessel the MARANATHA. “It’s unique—there is no other boat like it. It is perfect for reef deployment. We can carry 70 artificial reefs on the boat—which are six thousand pounds each —and can deploy one every three minutes,” said Walter.

Deploying a reef involves using a crane and a specialized device to keep the structure upright as it sinks. Walter provides each reef owner with GPS coordinates of his or her reef. Anyone can fish the reef, but only the owner knows the precise location and position.

Marine life gathered around one of Walter’s reefs.

Family members can mix the ashes of a loved one with the concrete used in a reef and then travel along as it is placed in the water.

A new addition to Walter Marine’s product offering, to be featured on the show, are memorial reefs. “A family can bring me their loved ones’ ashes and mix them in with the concrete. We help them actually do that. We also teamed up with a funeral home here and can have a marble plaque to embed in the concrete,” he said. The family can then ride on the MARANATHA to see the reef deployed. Walter says the memorial reefs are becoming more popular.

Never satisfied with just one project, he is also developing and testing a new kind of wave attenuator to preserve delicate coastlines. The attenuators, mounted on fiberglass piles, are large limestone and concrete discs that bear the brunt of wave energy while still allowing water to flow through. Walter says he is talking to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about using them for some projects off the coast of Louisiana. A set of them currently sits off the coast of Pensacola Beach. The area is open for snorkeling thanks to the marine life they have attracted.

The Weather Channel will air the first four episodes of “Reefmakers” this fall. If popular, more episodes may be produced in the future.

Walter said his reefs result in great fishing grounds. Here, one of his clients shows off some of his catches.

The state-of-the-art facility is capable of constructing six large aluminum vessels per year, such as the Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and/or Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV). Construction is in progress in the MMF on modules for JHSV 2, 3 and 4, and LCS 6 and 8.

Assembly Bay 5 was constructed south of the mid-yard break room adjacent to Assembly Bay 4 where MILLINOCKET (JHSV 3) is currently being assembled. It has 59,000 square feet of floor space (425 feet long by 135 feet wide) and is similar to that of the existing Assembly Bays 3 and 4, with the ability to join with the future expansion of Assembly Bay 6. Bay 5 is now long enough to completely construct an LCS inside and is about 10 feet taller than Bays 3 and 4, allowing additional clearance for the LCS’ uppermost deckhouse. The building contains additional overhead cranes to provide for rotating modules inside the assembly bay.

The new three-story office complex is just north of the MMF on Addsco Road and encompasses over 110,000 square

feet of office space, including a reconfigurable multi-use room capable of seating 400 people auditorium-style. It will house 450 employees and is five times the size of the existing two-story office building on Dunlap Drive. This new office building will allow Austal to co-locate engineers, as well as their projects and programs, purchasing, contractual and legal, finance, business integration, and sales and marketing offices, which are currently spread all over Mobile, Ala., in separate buildings and trailers.

Gray Construction, located in Birmingham, Ala., built the second half of the MMF and office complex. Thompson Engineering, of Mobile, Ala., designed and built Assembly Bay 5. Local subcontractors included SJ&L, Rowe Surveying and Engineering, Southern Earth Sciences, Jordan Pile Driving, Rob’t J. Baggett, Persons Service Company, A&B Electric, Keith Mosley Construction, National Pump and Compressor, Goram HVAC, Kittrell Acoustics, Warehouse Equipment and Supply, and Team Steel Placement.

A little more than one year after a memorable groundbreaking ceremony was held for new construction at Austal USA’s Mobile, Ala., shipbuilding facility, over 120 distinguished guests joined Austal in celebrating the official opening of not one but three new buildings—Module Manufacturing Facility (MMF) Phase 2, Assembly Bay 5 and the office complex —with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The ceremony was led by Austal USA Interim President and Chief Financial Officer Brian Leathers. Other event participants included Austal USA Senior Vice President of Operations Craig Perciavalle; Austal USA Vice President of Sales, Marketing and External Affairs Craig Hooper; Sen. Jeff Sessions; Mobile County Commission President Connie Hudson; Mobile City Council President Reggie Copeland; Gray Construction CEO Stephen Gray; and Thompson Engineering Chairman Henry R. Seawell III.

“I am pleased to announce that all three of these projects were completed under budget and either on or ahead of schedule. This says a lot about our facilities development team who are still working to complete further expansion of our ever-

growing operation,” said Leathers. “In just a few short years, Austal has accomplished what has taken others decades. We are the proud contractors of two major U.S. Navy shipbuilding programs, and we have grown our operation to meet the needs of our client as we promised we would.”

Located at the intersection of Dunlap Drive and Addsco Road, the completed MMF project includes 740,000 square feet (17 acres) of manufacturing space, 85,000 square feet of drive-through warehouse space for efficient receipt and distribution of materials from suppliers, and 60,000 square feet of office space. The MMF expansion can accommodate a total workforce of up to 1,200 personnel in the new buildings. The completion of MMF Phase 2 now makes the MMF large enough to accommodate each of the football playing fields in the Southeastern Conference, including end zones.

It is a mirror image of Phase 1, but the designers of Phase 2 took into consideration lessons learned. The team included additional cranes for increased lifting capacity, as well as static construction space for longer construction duration items not conforming to standard assembly line times.

An aerial photo shows the sheer size of the Austal uSA complex.

The company is Mobile's largest industrial employer.

Babbling creeks, winding rivers and the moon-fueled tides of the Gulf—when it comes to water, Alabama has it all. The Alabama Scenic River Trail, spanning over 2,000 miles of accessible waterways, serves to showcase the natural wonders within the state while providing a memorable experience to those making the refreshing trek.

According to Jim Felder, executive director of the Alabama Scenic River Trail, the initiative to bring access to the state’s river deltas, streams and bays was motivated by a zeal for harnessing Alabama’s natural resources in a way that could provide a quality experience to locals and visitors alike. The brainchild of the operation, Fred Couch, sought support from Rotary Clubs throughout the state, moving around and meeting every month. “After just 18 months of development, we had four guide books and a National Recreation designation, with the grand opening occurring in June 2008,” said Felder. “We felt passionate about it. Life is always easier when you’re doing something people

want done. With our diverse water opportunities, Alabama is one of the greatest states for water recreation in the United States.”

Of course, Felder also notes that the fact that these meandering waterways were already in existence, albeit somewhat uncultivated and untapped, made the project much more about drawing people in while creating an experience. “The river has been here forever. We were not out there having to dig it or fill it up with water, but we provided mental and physical access. We’ve identified places on the river, and we’ve put them on maps, websites and guidebooks. To showcase this stuff, we supply signage along the water routes to let people know where they can park. There’s this sort of official quality applied to the waterways now. We’ve been able to create a statewide brand,” he said.

The Alabama Scenic River Trail is made up of the Alabama River, Coosa River, Tensaw River, Tennessee River, Cahaba

River, Mobile-Tensaw Delta, Terrapin Creek, Hatchett Creek and Weogufka Creek, among others, coursing through 19 counties, including Baldwin and Mobile. The routes allow access to the thriving cities and quaint towns along the banks, each steeped in its own unique history. The Alabama Scenic River Trail typically works in conjunction with organizations and events within these destinations to provide an entertaining, enlightening experience to paddlers and boaters venturing the flowing tracks.

One such event is the weeklong paddle through Alabama’s Black Belt. From Oct. 13 to 20, 2012, history buffs and people looking for a bit of Southern excitement will paddle from Selma, Ala., to Millers Ferry, Ala., where they will be privy to Dixieland delights like soul food at the renowned Miss Kitty’s Restaurant in Camden, journey-wide storytelling and shopping at the Black Belt Treasures gallery. The trip kicks off in Selma during the town’s Riverfront Market Days, an annual tradition filled with arts, crafts and activities

Wetumpka, Ala., boasts Moccasin Gap, one of the most challenging aspects of the Alabama Scenic River Trail. The frothy whitewater rapids of this region are a thrilling rush for adventure-seeking paddlers.

On the Cahaba River portion of the trail, paddlers are treated to the sight of paper-thin Cahaba lilies dotting the route.

displaying the soil-rich history of the town. A stop at Gee’s Bend treats travelers to a display of the now-famous Gee’s Bend quilts and an opportunity to meet the talented quilters responsible for the work. And after paddling for a week, adventure seekers are rewarded with a down-home fish fry at Millers Ferry. “The weeklong paddle is in the perfect time of year for our state. It’s designated to meet the demands of history, nature and long-distance paddling. Events like the weeklong paddle are a way to really showcase Alabama,” said Felder.

The River Trail provides trip opportunities for power boaters and paddlers of various skill levels. The organization’s website, alabamascenicrivertrail.com, supplies a plethora of information for route planning as well as a list of outfitters along the trail who can provide everything from dry bags to the boats themselves. The trail is mapped out in detail on the website with important knowledge regarding weather conditions and difficulty level presented in an easy-to-access format. With the assistance of this invaluable resource, trip-

goers can tailor their entire experience based on individual needs and areas of interest.

For beginners or those simply in search of a leisurely amble downriver, Felder suggests Autagua Creek in Prattville, Ala. This particular creek is fed by springs and artesian wells, so it whispers with cool waters throughout the summer and is shaded by a thick awning of tree branches to shade travelers from the unforgiving Alabama sun. A trip on Autagua Creek snakes right through the heart of the town, allowing for visits with friendly locals and a sampling of some of the state’s finest fare at just a short row away.

A more challenging experience exists among a smattering of Spanish moss-covered trees at Moccasin Gap in Wetumpka, Ala. Here, paddlers will find themselves amidst crashing whitewater torrents, the southernmost Class III rapids in the entire state. These wild waters are meant for those who crave exhilaration and are best navigated in shorter, more maneuverable boats.

While experience level and desired intensity are factors to consider when selecting a part of the River Trail to explore, the Deep South panorama is also a major draw for many people. Each aspect of the trail presents its own environmental masterpiece. In Demopolis, Ala., the Black Warrior Nature Paddle includes a soundtrack of serenading chirps and whistles as it falls within one of the state’s foremost birding regions. The Cahaba River, flowing though the Birmingham, Ala., area, is home to over 35 species of fish and is lined with whispy Cahaba lilies dancing in time with the late spring breeze. With destinations such as these, paddlers and boaters are offered an aesthetic indulgence while flexing their fervor for water recreation.

Felder also says that many people appreciate making their watery ramble in groups. During lengthy trips, the Alabama Scenic River Trail includes several sandbars perfect for pitching a tent and campsites ideal for building a fire for some neighborly tale-telling. “Paddling is great,” he said, “but the camaraderie forged around the campfires is even better. I think people find discovering friends within the sport to be very rewarding.”

The Southern hospitality on which Alabama prides itself seems to be another facet that keeps people coming to ride the River Trail. “Reputations are built this way, and I can’t tell you how many people just rave about the treatment they get in Alabama. We have people coming from Florida, Texas and Louisiana, and they love the warmth and welcome they receive from the people and from the River Trail.”

A caravan down any one of the possible water paths on the Alabama Scenic River Trail offers a total package to open eyes and curious minds. Felder emphasizes that a traverse down the trail will undoubtedly be an experience worth remembering. “In Alabama, you will find the unexpected. You will be stunned by the solitude and natural beauty while you’re paddling. But the food experience and finding people who are just glad to have you in the towns you’ll pass through are really satisfying parts of a paddle, too. You’ll not only find out things about nature and history, you’ll find out something about yourself,” he said.

“The challenges before the inland waterways are extensive,” warned Matt Woodruff, chairman of Waterways Council Inc., as the annual meeting of the Warrior-Tombigbee Waterway Association came to a close.

Funding for the operation and maintenance of the inland waterway system is not receiving the support needed to adequately improve the nation’s most valuable resource. Primary to these concerns is the need to update infrastructure, which has been noted on many occasions by a panel of speakers representing several generations of waterway proponents.

One speaker noted that “as information continues to be developed to tell the story of the value of the rivers to this nation, we must continue efforts to change the minds of those who can influence the improvement of the waterways.” Speakers at the conference included Don Waldon, former administrator of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway; Tim Parker, Parker Towing Company; James K. Lyons, director and CEO of the Alabama State Port Authority; Sheldon Morgan, past-president of the Warrior-Tombigbee Waterway Association; and Charles Nicholls of Walter Energy.

It was noted by Charlie Haun (Parker Towing Company, member of the Inland Waterways User Board and chairman of the Warrior-Tombigbee Waterway Association) that the record number of attendees at this year’s conference could find some consolation in one fact: Several major economic projects have recently announced plans to build new operations along the river, including Walter Energy’s latest announcement to open a new mine.

A 1935 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Lt. j.g. Richard B. “Ozzie” Lynch began his career as a submariner when he reported to the USS SKIPJACK (SS-184) on July 1, 1939. The SKIPJACK was a Salmon-class boat built by the Electric Boat Company and commissioned on June 30, 1938. Lynch, a native of Citronelle, Ala., reported aboard the SKIPJACK in San Diego and got underway for Pearl Harbor as part of Submarine Squadron 2. He could not have known it at the time, but Lynch would go on to know the waters of the Pacific very well, notching up a stellar career as a wartime submarine commander.

Returning to San Diego that August, SKIPJACK conducted fleet training off the California coast until the following April, when she once more returned to Hawaiian waters for additional training. She underwent an overhaul at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard before sailing back to Hawaii and being assigned to Submarine Division 15.

Promoted to the rank of full lieutenant on August 1, 1941, Ozzie Lynch received orders in early 1942 to report to the USS NAUTILUS (SS-168), where he was initially appointed the role of gunnery and torpedo officer. NAUTILUS was an older boat, a NARWHAL-class submarine that had been laid down in 1927 and commissioned in 1930. She was also one of the two largest submarines the U.S. Navy had launched to date. Despite her age, she would prove to be a very capable platform in the hands of her officers and crew.

From the outset, Lynch and the NAUTILUS saw action. On her very first war patrol, the NAUTILUS participated in the crucial Battle of Midway. On June 3, 1942, the morning before the battle, the sub’s commanding officer, Lt. Cmdr. William H. Brockman Jr., gathered the officers and men in the crew’s mess and briefed them on the importance of the coming battle. As the torpedo officer, Lt. Lynch would play a critical role. During the battle, the NAUTILUS fired two torpedoes at an enemy battleship (one missed and the other was a dud, as was so often the case in the early days of the war). After undergoing numerous attacks by enemy aircraft and warships, the NAUTILUS sighted a damaged aircraft carrier and successfully torpedoed her from a distance of less than 3,000 yards, immediately drawing the attention of

escorts who did their best to sink the sub. The NAUTILUS was the target of no fewer than 42 depth charges during the battle but escaped largely unscathed. She went on to sink the Japanese destroyer YAMAKAZE and a sampan, as well as damage a second Japanese destroyer and merchant vessel during the remainder of her first patrol.

NAUTILUS departed Pearl Harbor on her second war patrol on Aug. 8, accompanied by the submarine ARGONAUT (SS-166). The boat was transporting 90 men of the Marine Corps’ Second Raider Battalion under the command of Lt. Col. Evans F. Carlson and arrived off Makin Atoll on Aug. 16.

26 AlAbAmA SeAport • July 2012 27AlAbAmA SeAport • July 2012

The “Makin Island Raid” was designed as a diversionary action, meant to draw enemy attention and forces away from the Solomons. The Raiders went ashore in rubber boats just after midnight. NAUTILUS supported the raid by firing on enemy positions, as well as ships in the lagoon, sinking a troop barge and a patrol boat. While the Marines were successful in destroying the garrison, they were hampered in their escape by strong onshore currents and the general failure of their outboard engines. Rescue efforts by the crews of the NAUTILUS and ARGONAUT were cut short by attacks by enemy aircraft. Eventually, the majority of the 211 Marines who had gone ashore made it back to the subs. Casualties included 18 killed in action and 12 missing in action. Nine of those initially listed as missing in action were captured and executed. As a single action, the raid was deemed a success, but the raid ultimately failed as a diversionary tactic.

Prowling Japanese waters during her third patrol, the NAUTILUS encountered heavy seas, mechanical difficulties and underwent numerous depth charge attacks. Nevertheless, she managed to sink three enemy merchant vessels before returning to Pearl Harbor for repairs.

Her fourth patrol took the NAUTILUS to the waters of the Solomon Islands. On Dec. 29, the submarine received

orders to proceed to Bougainville Island’s Teop Harbor to rescue a group of refugees. The boat made full speed to make the rendezvous. Lt. Lynch volunteered to lead the rescue effort that evening, but the boat received orders to scrub the mission and not attempt it until Dec. 31. Accordingly, NAUTILUS made for a point some 10 miles away and began patrolling.

At 7:39 p.m. on Dec. 31, the NAUTILUS surfaced three miles from Teop Harbor. Lt. Lynch led a party consisting of two chief petty officers. Their boat, laden with supplies, shoved off at 9:48 p.m. but soon returned with a broken rudder. The rudder having been replaced, Lynch and his rescue party set out again at 10:29, armed with a pistol apiece, as well as two submachine guns and a Springfield rifle. Lynch had orders that, should the submarine not be able to pick him and the refugees up that night, he was to return to the same point at 9:00 p.m. each night until the NAUTILUS could return. As the boat ran in toward the beach, it ran aground on a reef, tearing off the rudder. According to the captain’s log, “Great credit is due Lt. Lynch and his crew for saving the boat and getting it off the reef intact except for the rudder.”

Lynch landed the boat on the beach, transferred his supplies to the coast watcher there and organized the transport of refugees—including four nuns in white habits—to the NAUTILUS.

“Most Daring”:The World War II Career of

Cmdr. Ozzie Lynch

Hailing from Mobile County, Richard B. “Ozzie” Lynch, a 1935 graduate of the u.S. Naval Academy, notched up an impressive career as a submariner in World War II.

Most of Lynch’s service during the war was in the uSS NAuTILuS (SS-168), serving first as torpedo and gunnery officer, and later as the boat’s executive officer.

Page 15: JuLy 2012 - Alabama State Port Authority · Bryson presented the award to GSFP CEO Sam Yohanan and President ... contact the alabama State Port ... 6 AlAbAmA SeAport • July 2012

Lynch led native outriggers carrying 17 women and three children to the submarine and returned to the beach for an additional nine refugees, all men. The last of the people were embarked in the submarine and all gear stowed by 5:35 a.m. on New Year’s Day. The thankful refugees were given hot meals and medical attention; they had been pursued by the Japanese while making the arduous journey through the brush to the rescue point. The skipper’s quarters, the wardroom and the Chiefs’ Mess were given over to the women, while the rescued men were given enlisted men’s bunks. For his “heroic service in evacuating twenty-nine persons from Bougainville and bringing them safely to his ship,” Lt. Lynch was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal. The submarine delivered the refugees to Brisbane, Australia, but not before sinking the merchant vessel YOSINOGAWA MARU and torpedoing two additional merchant vessels and a MINEKAZE-class destroyer (initially reported sunk).

On her fifth war patrol, NAUTILUS landed 109 members of the 7th Army Scouts at Attu Island in the Aleutians, five hours before the beginning of the Battle of Attu, a grueling two-week struggle that would prove to be the only land battle during World War II that was fought on American-incorporated territory.

Lynch was promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander on May 1, 1943. He was awarded the Silver Star for his

“conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity,” and the Bronze Star with the Combat “V” for his “heroic service” during his first five patrols onboard the NAUTILUS. The submarine returned to Mare Island for repairs during most of the summer of 1943, and on Sept. 16 departed Pearl Harbor on her sixth wartime patrol with Lt. Cmdr. Lynch now serving as the boat’s navigator. The submarine’s mission on this patrol was to conduct photographic reconnaissance of the Gilbert Islands while transiting enemy-infested waters. Lynch received his second Bronze Star with Combat “V” for this patrol that gathered critical intelligence. His citation notes his “skill and excellent judgment” and “[h]is coolness and devotion to duty under fire” as “contributing factors in the evasion of attacking enemy aircraft and surface units…”

Promoted to executive officer (second in command), Lynch also served as the assistant approach officer during the NAUTILUS’ seventh war patrol, which saw the submarine return to the waters off Tarawa to gather last-minute information about the area weather and surf conditions. At about 10 p.m. on the night of Nov. 19, the destroyer USS RINGGOLD (DD-500) sighted the NAUTILUS and mistook her for an enemy submarine, firing a five-inch shell through the boat’s conning tower. The officers rigged the boat for emergency dive and took her down as soon as they reached deep enough water. Executive Officer Lynch

was credited with “controlling his crippled ship below test depth,” permitting “emergency repairs to be effected.” The following night, they were able to land Marines of the 5th Amphibious Reconnaissance Company on Abemama Atoll in the Gilberts. Supported by gunfire from the submarine, the Marines succeeded in capturing the Japanese garrison on the island ahead of the arrival of the main assault force. For his tour as the executive officer, Lt. Cmdr. Lynch was awarded a second Silver Star.

Lynch was promoted to the rank of full commander on March 1, 1944, and accepted orders as the commanding officer of the SARGO-class submarine USS SEAWOLF (SS-197), effective April 1. The SEAWOLF and crew were battle-tested by the time that Lynch took command of the boat. She was also fresh from an overhaul at the San Francisco Naval

Shipyard. Lynch commanded the SEAWOLF during her 13th war patrol, now leading a photographic reconnaissance mission to gather intelligence on Peleliu. Cmdr. Lynch took the sub in close to shore, avoiding the “numerous shore radar stations, surface patrols and enemy aircraft almost constantly overhead,” and obtained valuable information for Allied forces from June 4 through July 7, 1944. Additionally, Lynch directed the rescue of two downed Naval aviators whose plane crash-landed near the SEAWOLF’s vicinity. For his brief tour as the skipper of the SEAWOLF, Cmdr. Lynch was awarded the Legion of Merit with Combat “V.”

On Sept. 7, 1944, Lynch took command of the USS SKATE (SS-305), a BALAO-class sub that had been commissioned on April 15, 1943. He would go on to command the boat during her sixth and seventh war patrols and would be in command during her eighth war patrol when Japan surrendered in August 1945.

The SKATE got underway on her sixth wartime patrol two days after Lynch assumed command, her mission to gather photographic intelligence of Okinawa. Three weeks out from Pearl Harbor, the SKATE sank the merchant vessel EKISAN MARU and damaged an enemy light cruiser. The submarine returned to Pearl Harbor on Nov. 11. Following the patrol, the SKATE sailed for a refit at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard at Hunters Point, remaining there until March 1945. Cmdr. Lynch received his third Silver Star for his role as commanding officer during the sixth patrol. His citation notes that Lynch “successfully penetrated strong enemy escort screens” to launch torpedo attacks, sinking two enemy ships totaling 7,690 tons, as well as damaging “an enemy cruiser of 3,200 tons.”

Newly refitted, SKATE was tapped to participate in Operation BARNEY, deemed by Vice Adm. Charles A. Lockwood, Commander Submarines Pacific Fleet, as “the most daring operation in the history of submarines.” The objective of the operation was to slip past the minefields blocking the Tsushima Straits and penetrate the Sea of Japan in order to carry out simultaneous attacks against shipping in what, until then, had been safe waters for Japanese vessels.

Nine submarines, including SKATE, were designated as “Hellcats” and placed under the command of Cmdr. Earl F. Hydeman, skipper of the USS SEA DOG (SS-401) and the most senior of the nine skippers. The boats were divided into three groups, the “Hepcats,” “Polecats” and “Bobcats.” SKATE was one of the Polecats.

SKATE and her two fellow Polecats departed Guam on May 28, 1945, on her historic seventh wartime patrol. The sub transited the Tsushima Straits on June 2. During the passage, the SKATE scraped a mine mooring cable as she picked her way through a minefield that on radar

“looked impossible to get through,” as Cmdr. Lynch later reported. The skipper laid in a course that took the boat about halfway up the west coast of Honshu Island, where he began his patrol.

After conducting seven war patrols in the NAuTILuS and serving as her executive officer, Cmdr. Lynch next commanded the uSS SEAWOLF (SS-197). During his brief tour, Lynch led the rescue of two downed Naval aviators.

For his service as the skipper of the SEAWOLF, Cmdr. Lynch received the Legion of Merit, pictured here.

Cmdr. Lynch next served as commanding officer of uSS SKATE (SS-305) for the duration of the war.

At 11:20 a.m. on June 10, the SKATE sighted a large Japanese submarine. Twenty-four minutes later, Cmdr. Lynch put four torpedoes into the I-22 from a range of about 800 yards. Two days later, the SKATE entered Matsugishita Byochi at periscope depth and discovered four merchant ships at anchor. Lynch fired six torpedoes from his bow torpedo tubes, sinking one of the ships and damaging two more. SKATE had only 12 feet beneath her keel in the shallow cove. Turning around to head for deeper water, Lynch fired three more torpedoes at the ships from his stern tubes, sinking two more vessels, even as the armed merchantmen directed shell fire at the receding submarine. A reconnaissance flight the next day confirmed three ships sunk: the KENJO MARU, YOZAN MARU and the ZUIKO MARU. The sub sank one more freighter the following day. Although the SKATE made a number of contacts in the following days, she had expended all of her torpedoes. She returned to Pearl Harbor on July 4, 1945, for a refit.

The submarine and her crew were awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for her first, second, third and seventh patrols. Cmdr. Lynch received the Navy Cross for

“extraordinary heroism … as Commanding Officer of the USS SKATE (SS-305), on the SEVENTH War Patrol … in enemy-controlled waters in the Sea of Japan.” The citation goes on to note that Lynch was able to penetrate “strong

anti-submarine barriers” and sink a total of five enemy ships, while evading “severe enemy countermeasures” to bring his submarine back “safe to port.”

After the war, Lynch went on to command Submarine Development Group Two and, later, Submarine Squadron Ten. He served as Naval Attaché in London and then commanded both Cruiser Destroyer Flotilla Six and Cruiser Destroyer Flotilla Eight.

Lynch eventually attained the rank of rear admiral and served with the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His final assignment took Lynch back to the Pacific that he had known so well in wartime. Beginning in July 1967, Lynch served as Commander Hawaiian Sea Frontier, commanding naval operations in the mid-Pacific and coordinating the successful recovery of the first unmanned Apollo spacecraft on Nov. 9, 1967. Rear Adm. Richard Barr “Ozzie” Lynch died while on active duty on Jan. 19, 1968, at the age of 53.

SKATE sank five enemy vessels during Operation BARNEy, described by Commander Submarines Pacific Fleet as “the most daring operation in the history of submarines.” This photo of the sub’s conning tower shows her kills as recorded by the end of her seventh war patrol.

On December 19, 1911, Angus Royal Cooper and Nora Hall Cooper welcomed

their newborn son, Ervin Seifert Cooper into the world.

A century later, immortalized in bronze, that same son watches over the Mobile

waterfront he dearly loved. The success he learned from his father, honed, nurtured and

passed on to his sons and grandsons, has helped build a legacy in the maritime industry.
