June Luncheon “Aloha Hawaii” was Fun!
Our fun June Luncheon, “Aloha Ha-waii”, was held at Michael’s at Shoreline Restaurant over looking the Golf Course in Mountain View on June 19, 2009. Ninety-seven people attended all dressed in colorful Ha-waiian theme and ready for a fun time. We were honored to have John Kowalchik, Vice President and Chief Engineer of Lockheed Martin Systems Company and LMMAR Ex-ecutive Advisor in attendance with us. The outstanding menu featured Green Salad, a choice of Macada-mia Chicken with Coconut Beurre Blanc Sauce, Hawaiian Pork Loin with Mango Sauce, or Island Salmon with Ginger Lime Sauce. The dessert was vanilla ice cream with chocolate dipped pineapple. Live authentic Hawaiian entertainment, The Island Breeze from Santa Cruz featuring Miles Kalae playing the Ukulele, Stan Meidinger playing Bass Guitar, and Hula Dancer Ashley performed Hawaiian and Tahitian songs and dances. Miles Kalae is up for the Na Hoku Hanohano Music Awards in Hawaii, which is equivalent to our Grammy Awards for music. This is quite an honor in Hawaii and we hope Miles wins because his music is great! Ashley, the hula dancer encour-aged the audience to dance with her. This was a lot of fun with participation of the audience including most of the LMMAR Executive Board Members in fine Tahitian and Hawaiian dancing form. The audience’s dancing was so great? there were two calls for “…One More Time! ” …there were a lot of laughs! The Hawaiian Breeze music and hula dancer brought Hawaii to us! Door prize winners were Barbara Yow, $25.00 Gift Certificate from Starbucks, and Dick Nichols, $50.00 Gift Certificate to the Santa Clara Fish Market Restaurant. Everyone had an enjoyable time dancing or socializing! We thank Program Chair Caro-lyn Hobbs and her Committee Volunteers Lucille Wilson, Alice Ray, Joe Reickerd, Pat De La Ossa, Bus Busby, Ralph Honda, and Bill and Jan Hammerlund for their work on making this a pleasurable event. Don’t miss our next LMMAR Luncheon, “Country & Western Barbecue” on Friday, Au-gust 28, 2009 at Michael’s at Shoreline, 2960 N. Shoreline Blvd, Mountain View. Dress in the Country & Western theme. This will be a fun Country & Western after-noon. See flier. Contact Carolyn Hobbs (408) 248-3348.

you, the members to input ideas to
help set the direction for LMMAR.

may have unclear ideas now, but by
the time your ideas are clear, the win-
dows of opportunity may be closed.
When you make your ideas tangible,
you create the window. Let me know
of your ideas! We encourage all
members to participate, have fun, and
meet great people. You are the key to
our Organization. Invite non-members

Lockheed Martin’s THAAD Pro-
gram Celebrates 10- And 25-
Year Hit-To-Kill Intercept Anni-
versaries
HUNTSVILLE, AL, June 10th, 2009 --
Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] employ-
ees celebrated the 10th anniversary
of the first successful intercept of the
Terminal High Altitude Area Defense
(THAAD) weapon system today. On
June 10, 1999, a THAAD missile suc-
cessfully intercepted a ballistic missile
target over White Sands Missile
Range, NM.
“Ten years ago, THAAD hit its first tar-
get, which was a significant milestone
in the history of this program,” said
Tom McGrath, program manager and
vice president for THAAD at Lockheed
Martin. “Since that time, our mission
success continues to speak loudly, as
we have seen success-after-success
on the THAAD program. I am very ex-
cited for our Soldiers, who will take
delivery of this incredible missile de-(Continued on page 4)

fense system later this year.”
Today also marks the 25th anniver-
sary of the first hit-to-kill intercept of a
ballistic missile target outside of the
Earth’s atmosphere. Developed by
Lockheed Martin, the U.S. Army’s
Homing Overlay Experiment vehicle
destroyed a target missile through
force of impact alone above the Pa-
cific Ocean on June 10, 1984, pio-
neering today’s non-nuclear ballistic
missile defense technology.
“Although it still seems relatively new,
Lockheed Martin has been proving
that hit-to-kill technology works for
decades,” said Mike Trotsky, vice
president of Air & Missile Defense at
Lockheed Martin. “And it remains true
that pure kinetic energy interceptors,
such as THAAD and PAC-3, are the
only proven way to defeat today’s
most challenging threats facing the
Warfighter.”
A production contract for the first two
THAAD batteries was awarded to
Lockheed Martin in late 2006. Produc-
tion of the THAAD launcher and fire
control and communications unit is
underway at Lockheed Martin’s manu-
facturing facility in Camden, AR, and
interceptor production is being con-
ducted at Lockheed Martin’s Pike
County Facility in Troy, AL.
Lockheed Martin rolled out the new
THAAD weapon system launcher and
fire control and communications dur-
ing a ceremony at the company’s
THAAD Launcher Integration Complex
in Camden, AR, in April. The new hard-
ware is being delivered this year to
Soldiers at Fort Bliss, TX, who will be-
gin training with the equipment.
THAAD is designed to defend U.S.
troops, allied forces, population cen-
ters and critical infrastructure against
short- to medium range ballistic mis-
siles. THAAD comprises a fire control
and communications system, inter-
ceptors, launchers and a radar. The
THAAD interceptor uses hit-to-kill tech-
nology to destroy targets, and THAAD
is the only weapon system that en-
gages threat ballistic missiles at both
endo- and exo-atmospheric altitudes.
A key element of the nation’s Ballistic
Missile Defense System (BMDS),
THAAD is a Missile Defense Agency
program, with their project office lo-
cated in Huntsville, AL. The agency is
developing a BMDS to defend the
United States, its deployed forces,
friends and allies against ballistic mis-
siles of all ranges and in all phases of
flight.

THE KENTUCKY DERBY TRIP
MAY 2009
Eight LMMAR members enjoyed the
Kentucky Derby May 2nd 2009. The
ladies were dressed in their festive
outfits complete with hats to match,
assuring that they were a part of the
pomp and ceremony that is the Derby
To participate in this grandiose party
of all parties we joined the 140,000
people who attended this wondrous
day of horse racing. Entering the race-
track grounds with the many food
stands and vendor booths, we wound
our way into to our grandstand seats
in awe of our surroundings. Our group
was seated about 75 feet from the
finish line. When horses flew past to-
wards the finish line everyone stood
on their seats to see the finish line.
Prior to the Derby race we were look-
ing to bet on the 10th race. Reviewing
the lineup we spotted a horse called
Einstein. Ali Rashid is a LMMAR mem-
ber and travels with LMMAR (I nick
named him Einstein). We bet on this
horse and two others and they came
in 1,2 and 3. Now that we had some
money we bet on the favorite to win
the Derby. The excitement was about
to begin and the horses were off and
running and we thought how easy this
was going to be when out of the blue
Mine that Bird was snaking its way to
the rail and this blur surged past its
competitors to an outstanding victory
at 50 to 1
We had some winners and losers dur-
ing this day of racing which was the
culmination of a fantastic trip through
the Kentucky horse farms and sur-
rounding areas of Lexington. We en-
joyed very good food and the hospital-
ity of the people of Kentucky.
Once again the Kentucky Derby is a

U.S. AIR FORCE AWARDS LOCK-
HEED MARTIN $1.5-BILLION
CONTRACT FOR SBIRS FOL-
LOW-ON SPACECRAFT
SUNNYVALE, Calif., , June 2nd, 2009 --
The U.S. Air Force has awarded Lock-
heed Martin [NYSE: LMT] a $1.5-billion
contract for the third highly elliptical
orbit (HEO-3) payload, the third geo-
synchronous orbit (GEO-3) satellite
and associated ground modifications
for the Space-Based Infrared System
(SBIRS) constellation. A contract to
include a fourth HEO payload and pos-
sible fourth GEO satellite is expected
to be awarded later this year.
The SBIRS program is designed to
provide early warning of missile
launches, and simultaneously support
other missions including missile de-
fense, technical intelligence and bat-
tlespace awareness.
"This production contract reflects the
Air Force's strong commitment to pro-
viding superior missile detection and
surveillance capabilities for the war-
fighter," said Jeff Smith, Lockheed
Martin's SBIRS vice president. "The
improved infrared event detection
and reporting capabilities provided
by SBIRS are integral to our nation's
information and intelligence archi-
tecture and we look forward to
achieving mission success on this
vitally important program."
Currently, two HEO payloads -- the
first of which is already providing
certified operations for the war-
fighter -- are on-orbit and meeting or
exceeding performance specifica-
tions. Final integrated system test-
ing of the first two GEO satellites is
progressing at Lockheed Martin's
facilities in Sunnyvale, Calif. The
fully-integrated GEO-1 spacecraft is
being readied for the start of ther-
mal vacuum testing and the team
recently integrated the spacecraft
bus with the infrared sensor payload
for GEO-2.
After the extensive environmental
and final integrated test phase,
GEO-1 will be shipped to the Air
Force in preparation for launch in
2010 from Cape Canaveral Air
Force Base, Fla.
The SBIRS team is led by the Space
Based Infrared Systems Wing at the
U.S. Air Force Space and Missile
Systems Center, Los Angeles Air
Force Base, Calif. Lockheed Martin
Space Systems Company, Sunny-
vale, Calif., is the SBIRS prime con-
tractor, with Northrop Grumman
Electronic Systems, Azusa, Calif., as
the payload integrator. Air Force
