Gay Movie Night at PCCNCF

Pride Community Center now hosts “Gay Movie Night”

on the last Friday of each month at 7:30 p.m.

Join us on Friday, July 25th for “Outing Riley”

Bobby Riley (Pete Jones) is just a regular guy who loves his family, his beer, and the Chicago Cubs. Oh yeah, and his boyfriend. A uniquely enjoyable comedy for all audiences, this charming ensemble film looks at what happens when Bobby finally tells his Irish-Catholic brothers (one of whom is a priest) that he's gay. And, they

think he's joking! (86 min)

“Gay Movie Night” is a free service to the GLBT community in North Central Florida.

A $2 donation is requested to cover snack and refreshment costs.

which is collecting signed petitions by Gainesville voters to put their charter amendment on the March 24, 2009, city commission ballot. CGGP needs 5,581 validated petitions from Gainesville voters by July 29th to be able to put the measure before city voters. Gainesville City Commissioner Craig Lowe is chair of the Equality Is Gainesville’s Business com-mittee. He said they are working to fight against the discriminatory ballot measure, and are urging volun-teers to get involved. “Discrimination against anyone is simply unac-ceptable in Gainesville,” said committee Chair Craig Lowe. “Equality for everyone – gay, lesbian, trans-gender or heterosexual -- is a measure of how wel-coming and inclusive Gainesville is toward others who come to live here, work here, or do business here.” The CGGP opposition group has been ramping up efforts to collect the needed signed petitions, includ-ing a TV ad campaign which includes a provocative scene of a man following a girl into a park restroom. If passed by voters, the charter amendment would have the effect of limiting Gainesville's protected cate-gories to only those listed in the state's Civil Rights

Code. The state code does not include "sexual orien-tation" nor "gender identity". In effect, the Gaines-ville City Commission would be unable to pass ordi-nances protecting LGBT people from discrimination. “This charter amendment would have the Tallahas-see politicians – the State Legislature -- telling Gainesville what to do regarding matters of discrimi-nation. If passed, the Gainesville City Commission would be giving up its authority to extend nondis-crimination protections to any other affected groups it chooses,” said Bob Karp of the Human Rights Council of North Central Florida. "Passage of this charter amendment would be a huge step backwards for human rights in Gainesville, and would set a terrible precedent for the rest of Flor-ida and the nation," added Karp. "If passed, this char-ter amendment would once again make it perfectly legal in Gainesville for a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender person to be discriminated against at the workplace, when obtaining housing, or using a public accommodation." For more information about the efforts to oppose the potential charter amendment, contact Equality Is Gainesville’s Business at 352-219-5068 or email [email protected].

PCCNCF Collects for the TREE Project

The Gainesville Area AIDS Project (GAAP) provides a program for people with HIV called the TREE (The Replenishment of Everyday Essentials) Project. This is a program to provide household products for people in Alachua County who have HIV or AIDS and who are living on disability or food stamps. GAAP provides these essential household needs and relies exclusively on donations of products and money from the local community. A donation box is set-up at the center and each month the center will be focusing on a different item and asking visitors to the center and groups that meet at the center to help out with this program by donating the requested item.
