AUTO OMNICLASSIFIEDS - July 2008 VOL 2.CARS FOR SALE

AUTO CARE

Well most cars come with a manual; youknow that little book in the glove box thathardly anyone bothers to read. It containsvaluable information on the operation andmaintenance of your vehicle.

The manufacturer has a detailed and com-prehensive maintenance schedule for yourcar, telling you what to change at differentmileage intervals during the life of your car.

This is called preventive maintenance; it isthe best way to avoid most of the major me-chanical problems that can affect your carduring its life time.

For those of us who don’t have the manualfor our cars for one reason or another, hereare 10 tips to help you along.

You drive your car everyday. Do you pay at-tention to it? Do you feel that slight shimmyin the front end? Is there a new knockingsound under the hood? Is there a rattle in thedashboard?

No one knows your car better than you do.If you feel something different or if it isn’thandling like it used to, take it to your me-chanic. It could be something as simple análignment issue, or perhaps a slack drive

belt. It’s always best to find any small prob-lem before it becomes a big one.

2. Keep an eye on where you park your car;get yourself into the habit of looking to seeif there are any leaks when you move off. This could be harder if you use publicgarage with lots of stains from leaks fromother cars, but if your car is leaking any typeof fluid transmission, radiator or brake theleak will look “fresh” If you see, any type offluid have the car serviced as soon as possi-ble. (Don’t wait) it will get much worse Ipromise you.)

3. Always check your tires before you getinto your car. Inspect your tires for any wearand make sure your tyres are properly in-flated. Bald, slick tires might be excellentfor motor racing but they’re no good for theroad.

Most tires come with tread wear bars or in-dicators built into them now, if your tread istoo low you will notice a small line goingdiagonally across your tire tread. Replaceyour tires. Four new tires might seem ex-pensive but they’re cheaper than a fine or anaccidentCheck your tire pressure once every month. It’s easy enough to read tyre gauges and they

even have electronic ones to. Keeping yourtires properly inflated can help increase gasyour mileage, give you handling and com-fort. (It’s simple to do and there is really noexcuse not to.)

Every 5,000 miles or 8,000km, have yourtires rotated. Clean brake dust off regularly,Brake dust contains all sorts of stuff. If youleave it too long, the combination of roadgrime, moisture and heat from your brakeswill bake it on to your wheels. Brake dustnormally clings to wheels because of staticelectricity so a sponge and clean soapy wateris the best way to get it off.

4. Change your oil at least every 5000km orevery 3months which ever comes first. Oil isthe life blood of your car and keeping freshoil in your car can extends it’s life by many, many kilometersAt this time the technician will check and re-place if necessary your air filter, hoses andbelts.

5. Keep your windshield washer reservoirfull and carry an extra with you. You don’twant to be caught with a dry washer reser-voir and you don’t realize how quickly youcan use it up.

6. Have your cooling system checked andflushed once a year. This will help ensure op-timal engine health and lessen the chance ofoverheating or a breakdown on a hot day.Nothing is worse on a hot or extremely coldlonely night to be stranded because you did-n’t have your coolant system checked.

7.When you check your oil level it is always

a good idea to check your transmission fluid. It is just as easy. You pull out the transmis-sion dip stick and wipe it on a white papertowel is it red in color or burned smelling andbrown or black? Red is the natural color ofmost transmission fluids. Brown and burnedsmelling fluid could be a sign that in the leastyou need to change your transmission fluidand filter or that you have a serious trans-mission issue that may require immediate at-tention.

8. Take a few minutes to check the safetyitems of your car. Do all of the seat beltswork properly?

If you know how, check your brake pads, ifyou don’t take your car to have themchecked. A brake pad replacement isn’t allthat expensive and will give you a betterpeace of mind.

9. Don’t forget to wash and wax your car atleast once a month. This will ensure that yourcar looks its best and maintains its new shinylook for as long as possible. It may even helpkeep the moist away for a longer period.Proper polishing and waxing can even makea dull car look new again and save you theexpense and inconvenience of having it re-painted.

10. Have your car under washed and enginewashed every three months. This will help to keep the hoses from dryingout, becoming brittle and cracking for alonger period.

FOUNDATION

The influence of climatechanges and natural dis-asters results in structuresbeing subjected to move-ments, which has alsocontributed to cracks ap-pearing on structures

To prevent or minimizethese problems, it is very important tobear in mind that the strength of anybuilding depends on the strength of thefoundation as the foundation takes theload of the entire structure (i.e. walls, roof, furniture, appliances etc.)

So if you are about to build your dreamhome with your hard earned money, don’t let it go down in trenches. Ensurethat you employ professional tradesmen or seek expert advice

TIPS TO CONSIDER1. Do proper soil testingand choose theproper foundation type base on soiltype and land contour2. Avoid the use of corroded steel rodsfor use of reinforcement3. Excavate footing to proper dept andwidth based on the design of the struc-ture4. Proper reinforcement must be usedand proper placement ofthese members must beenforced5. Don’t cut cost on foun-dation material. Shoparound for low cost mate-rial but not inferior ones6. Ensure proper concretemix is used -7. Proper batching of ma-terial8. Use required amountof material

9. Use only portable water for mixing(drinking water)10. Use a mix that is not substandard 11. No steel reinforcement shouldcome into contact with the earth, whenthis occurs, the steel will corrode in avery short time and becomes useless inthe foundation.12. Ensure enough coverage is allowedbetween earth and steel reinforcements13. Place concrete in footing and vi-brate or tamp properlySo in conclusion, if you use these basicsteps I guarantee you that your homewill be able to withstand some of theelements and you will have a founda-tion for a lifetime.
