Onward & Upward: St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton Launches its Five-Year Strategic PlanBy Debbie Silva, Media Relations Co-ordinator

St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton hasmapped its course to excellence with thepublication of its five-year strategic plan -Compass 2012: Charting a Course forMission Excellence.

On Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007, staff at allthree campuses celebrated the launch ofthe strategic plan during the Compass2012 Traveling Road Show.

The multi-campus event featured a presentation by Dr. Kevin Smith,President and CEO and several exhibitbooths on each of the Corporate AttentionAreas. Staff were able to speak withmembers of the Compass 2012 SteeringCommittee to learn more about how the

Corporate and Clinical Attention Areasidentified in the plan will impact theirrole within the organization.

As part of the Compass theme, aCompass 2012 Caravan Bus was used toshuttle members of the Strategic PlanningSteering Committee throughout the Cityof Hamilton to celebrate this importantday for health care in the community.

The Strategic Planning Process first began at St. Joseph's Healthcare in 2005.Initially an environmental scan was completed to identify key challenges thatthe organization will face over the nextthree to five years. The Strategic PlanningSteering Committee then developed key

focal points termed Corporate AttentionAreas and Clinical Attention Areas toaddress these identified challenges. Thepublication of the document signaled thetransition from planning to implementationin the strategic planning cycle.

As outlined in the strategic plan, St. Joseph's Healthcare has identifiedmany key Corporate Attention Areas. "We recognize that the quality of patientcare and our staff's quality of work lifeare connected and we will aim to improveboth in the coming years by focusing onthe areas of Quality of Work Life andService Excellence,” says Dr. Smith. "Wewill also focus on achieving excellence inInformation Management, Patient Safety,Performance Measurement andResearch."

"Although all St. Joseph's Healthcare programs play a critical role, based onissues that we currently face in ourhealthcare system, our team developed alist of Clinical Attention Areas thatrequire immediate energy and investment,”says Dr. Smith. These areas include theChest Program, Kidney and UrinaryProgram, Diagnostic Imaging, MentalHealth and Addictions Program,Ophthalmology - Eye Medicine and EyeSurgery, Cancer Surgery, Cardiac Careand Surgical Services. "Working withpartners in the province, region and LocalHealth Integration Network, St. Joseph'sHealthcare's goal is to become the regionalleader in each of these areas over the nextfive years,” adds Dr. Smith.

To develop our Strategic Plan, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton consulted team members andcolleagues, including physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, researchers, staff, and volunteers, and a wealth of health system literature about the important challenges we face today and in the future.

Taking Time to Reflect on Recent Achievements

As summer approaches and many of us prepare to wind down for vacationtime with family and friends, I wouldencourage each of you to take a moment to reflect on the tremendousaccomplishments of St. Joseph'sHealthcare over the last quarter.

In May, we published Compass 2012:Charting a Course for MissionExcellence, our five-year strategic plan, which was the culmination of overtwo years of work by our StrategicPlanning Steering Committee. With thepublication of this document we havenow transitioned from a period of plan-ning to implementation within the organi-zation. We look forward to tremendousgrowth in both our Corporate AttentionAreas and Clinical Attention Areas.

Several important funding announcementsalso took place recently. Our operating room redevelopment projectreceived a tremendous boost with a substantial donation of $4 million fromMr. David Braley and Ms. NancyGordon. Mr. Braley and Ms. Gordoncommitted an additional $1 million to

support a new inpatient care unit for ourkidney-urinary program.

The Centre for Minimal Access Surgeryreceived a $2 million donation from theOntario Government to be used for theadvancement of telerobotic surgery inOntario.

In June, Ontario Minister of Health andLong-Term Care, George Smitherman,visited our Charlton Campus toannounce annual funding allocations for Ontario hospitals for the comingyear. St. Joseph's Healthcare received$19 million, a six per cent increase overlast year.

As we celebrated these important fundingannouncements, we also took time torecognize our colleagues, peers andmembers of the St. Joseph's Healthcarecommunity at a variety of recent events.

We honoured the commitment and dedication of our nurses during a seriesof events held throughout NursingWeek. At the Sixth Annual NursingExcellence Awards, we presented thefirst annual Robertson Memorial Awardfor Nursing Leadership & InnovativePractice to the Critical Care Response

Team (CCRT).

We also recognized many of our colleagues commemorating career milestones at two special recognitionevents held on June 7th and 14th andhonoured those who have gone aboveand beyond with the presentation of theannual Mission and Values Awards.

Most recently we presented the firstannual Mission Legacy Awards to 17individuals that have played a criticalrole in shaping our organization.Developed by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamilton, these prestigious awardsrecognize key individuals who have contributed in an exceptional manner tothe health care ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamilton, St. Joseph'sHealthcare Hamilton and the St. Joseph's Health System.

As we wind down during these hot summer months, let us enjoy some much deserved rest and relaxation. Iencourage each of you to pause andreflect on the great strides we have made as an organization.

Telerobotic Surgery Receives $2 millionboost from Ontario government

The Centre for Minimal Access Surgery(CMAS) recently received a $2 millionboost from the Ontario Government toadvance the field of telerobotic surgery.

"By providing more support forresearchers, we are investing in one ofOntario's greatest assets -- the skills andknowledge of our dynamic academiccommunity," said Mr. Ted McMeekin,MPP for Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Aldershot while making the announcementon behalf of Premier and Minister ofResearch and Innovation DaltonMcGuinty. "Our government is doing itspart to invest in local research excellenceto make Hamilton -- and Ontario -- aninnovative economic power."

"This investment will allow us to extendCanada's and Ontario's leadership in thefield of robotics," said Dr. MehranAnvari. "It is through this funding that we can continue to develop innovativesurgical technologies which are instru-mental in improving the quality of healthcare and improving access to patients inrural parts of this country."

Dr. Anvari is renowned for his achieve-ments in telerobotic surgery, whichallows surgeons to direct and assist inprocedures that are taking place in operating rooms in rural or remoteregions of the country. Telerobotic surgery involves the use of sophisticated,three-arm robots to seamlessly and

directly translate the surgeon's naturalhand, wrist and finger movements intocorresponding micro-movements ofinstrument tips positioned inside thepatient.

"St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton,McMaster University and the Centre forMinimal Access Surgery are leaders ininnovative health delivery and technologyassessment and development," said Dr. Kevin Smith, President and CEO."This investment will help CMAS continue its critical role in telehealthtechnologies which continue to shape thedelivery of health care in this communityand around the globe."

CMAS is one of Canada's most technically advanced telesurgery centres. The multi-disciplinary centre develops,evaluates and provides training in newtechniques in minimally invasive surgeryand diagnostics. It was the first centre inthe world to utilize robots for surgery.

Telerobotic surgery increases the accessibility of minimal access surgicalintervention to remote communities,when a specialized surgeon is unavailable.Recent advances in technology make itpossible for a surgeon to provide completelaparoscopic surgical intervention from a distance of over 1,000 kilometres. To date, the centre has performed 22telerobotics surgical procedures.

A wide variety ofsnacks can fit into a healthy diet, soyou don't need to avoid snacks.Rather, plan them with variety, moderation and balance in mind. In fact, mini meals several times aday can be beneficial.

Binge controlIf eating several low-fat whole-graincrackers, a few pretzels, a piece offruit or some raw vegetables keepsyou from taking second or thirdhelpings at your next meal, you may actually consume fewer totalcalories for the day.

Extra energy and nutrientsTraditional, made-at-home mealsoften lose out to busy schedules. A grab-and-go snack can be thedifference between some nourish-ment and none at all.

Satisfaction for small appetitesYoung children's tiny stomachs canhold only small portions of food atone time. Older adults who are lessactive and who burn fewer caloriesalso may feel comfortable eatingsmaller meals more frequently.

Celebrate Nursing! Celebrate Excellence!A Report of Nursing Week May 6-12, 2007St. Joseph's Healthcarenurses celebrated their vision, mission and philosophy asempowered leaders,innovators and advocatesduring recent NursingWeek celebrations inMay. With full apprecia-tion of the importanceof collaboration withtheir interdisciplinaryhealth care partners toprovide excellent patientcare, many activitieswere held across allthree campuses.

The week started offwith an engagingNursing Grand Roundspresentation by Dr.Lynn McDonald, whoaddressed "Think You Know FlorenceNightingale? Think Again. RelevantYesterday, Today and Tomorrow". Hertopic was an excellent link to the thrillingopportunity to view some originalFlorence Nightingale writings, kindlyloaned from local art collector, retiredphysician and SJHH friend, Dr. BillBenson. This was featured on the frontpage of The Hamilton Spectator, and created an exciting link to connect us with the founder of professional nursingpractice and research. Staff and colleaguesmingled over the collection during thereception that followed.

The 6th Annual Nursing ExcellenceAwards Dinner was a huge success. Arecord 186 attendees crowded Carmen'sBanquet Hall for an evening of celebrationand colleaguiality for all nurses andguests, with special recognition of the 146nominees for Nursing Excellence. FifteenNursing Excellence Awards were presentedamongst standing ovations to graciousrecipients, who received commemorativeplaques, watches and Nursing Excellence2007 pins.

Dr. Don Wilson and his niece, Ms. DonnaWatson, were present to see the inauguralRobertson Memorial Award for NursingLeadership and Innovative Practice,invested through St. Joseph's Foundation,

awarded to the Critical Care ResponseTeam (CCRT) to memorialize Dr.Wilson's wife and sister, both graduates ofSt. Joseph's School of Nursing. Theengraved plaque will be displayed in thealumni showcase in the Charlton campus.

A poem was dedicated to all St. Joseph’snurses and was also presented. Craig Peters and Mike Szabo provided anotherwonderful video display of NursingExcellence events, past and present.Fabulous door prizes were awarded, inaddition to a 50/50 draw, of which 50%went to the St. Joseph's HealthcareFoundation’s Nursing Education Fund.

Ice cream socials were open to all at eachof the three campuses throughout the week to thank everyone for theirinvaluable contributions in realizing ourfirst anniversary as an RNAO BestPractice Spotlight Organization. TheCMHS Nursing Practice Council hostedan interactive community KnowledgeCafé with this event, complete with moredoor prizes.

A special RNAO supplement in TheHamilton Spectator featured a half pagead thanking all St. Joseph's nurses, andincluded an insightful and meaningfularticle on our own Ms. Tanya Lysiak-Globe, Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)with the Schizophrenia Program, whichhighlighted the need to destigmatize

mental health and mental health nursing.Cindy Kington, another exemplary CNSfrom St. Joseph’s, was nominated for theprestigious Toronto Star "NightingaleAward".

Every nurse's name in the organizationwas entered into a draw for ten lovely gift baskets throughout the week, compliments of Nursing Practice.Congratulations to all the winners!

We enjoyed many sponsorships for theseevents. Two of St. Joseph’s MRI technicians received top honours recently at the International Society for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (ISMRI) meeting held in Berlin, Germany.

Mr. Jay Neadles was presented with the firstplace award and Ms. Toni Cormier was presented with the third place award based on their research studies conducted in the 3T MRI in the Imaging Research Centre.

ISMRI is comprised of radiologists, physicists and medical radiation technologists. Over 5,000attended this year’s meeting.

The Departmentof Diagnostic Imaging is proud and fortunate to have these two dedicated, caring and enthusiastic technologists as members of its staff.

The Ontario Minister of Health andLong-Term Care, the HonourableGeorge Smitherman was at theCharlton campus on June 8th to handout $495 million to Ontario hospitals inan effort to lower wait times, increaseaccess to physicians and nurses andprovide more critical health services inthe province.

Of the $67 million being allocated tolocal hospitals, St. Joseph's Healthcarewill receive just over $19 million,which is a six per cent increase over last year.

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamilton Mission Legacy Awards recognize key individualswho have contributed in an exceptional manner to the healthcare ministry of the Sisters ofSt. Joseph of Hamilton; St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH), St. Joseph's HealthSystem (SJHS) and St. Joseph's Resource Development System (SJRDS).

Lighting accounts for approximately 10 -15% of the average households energy use.By choosing the right energy efficient lightbulb, you will reduce the impact on theenvironment, and also lower your utilitybill!

Compact fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) are a better alternative to the regular incandescentlight bulbs that are found in many residential households. CFL's produce almost thesame amount of light as incandescent bulbs, but they are better for the environmentand more energy efficient. CFL's use approximately 75% less energy and last approxi-mately 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs.

The type of light bulb that you use is not the only way you can save energy. Byinstalling automatic controls for indoor and outdoor lighting, such as motion sensors,you can ensure lights are turned on only when needed. Motion sensors turn lights onwhen motion is detected and turn lights off when there is no activity in the area for alimited period of time, thus lowering electricity consumption.

Energy Matters, an energy saving and facilities renewal program, is a joint effort by St. Joseph'sHealthcare Hamilton and Honeywell.

This year, the Psychiatric Mental HealthNursing Promotion Committee (PMHN-PC) celebrated Nursing Week right along with our nursing and allied healthcolleagues. The committee adapted thisyear's Nursing Week theme, "Think You Know Nursing? Think Again!" andcirculated a survey and fact sheet called,"Think You Know Psychiatric MentalHealth Nursing? Think Again!" Surveyresults indicated that there is a need toincrease our colleagues' awareness of therole of psychiatric mental health nurseswithin the Mental Health and AddictionsProgram.

The mandate of the PMHNPC is "...torecognize and promote the unique evidence-based and experiential knowledge of RNs and RPNs who choose to specialize in mental health. The PMHNPC supports activities thatcelebrate the art and science of psychiatricmental health nursing in order to raise theprofile of this specialized professionwithin nursing, the broader health caresystem and the general public."

Reporting to the Mental Health NursingPractice Council, the committee is working toward meeting its mandate byplanning fundraising events, sponsoringguest speakers, and organizing an annualKnowledge Café for all disciplines to celebrate the professional working relationships we share. This year, the

committee chose a slogan to raise thepride and profile of our specialized nurses: "I am a nurse: Specializing inyour mental health." The committeebelieves this slogan communicates thefact that psychiatric mental health nursesare general nurses first, who go on to specialize in mental health. It also strivesto confront the stigma around mentalhealth issues by communicating thatmental health issues can affect everyoneincluding you.

This year, the PMHNPC was pleased topartner with the Abuse EducationCommittee to bring the Knowledge Caféto CMHS to help celebrate Nursing Week2007. The purpose of the AbuseEducation Committee is to increaseawareness and develop an education planfor the Mental Health and AddictionsProgram in order to address abuse issuesfor adult clients. Reporting to PeterSzota, Administrative Director, the committee works to increase awareness,sensitivity and support for the nature andimpact of abuse on adult clients. It alsohopes to identify and develop expertise inevidence-informed knowledge and carefor clients who have experienced abuse.

Partnering with representatives and community agencies, the committee willformulate and make recommendations forprogram/service enhancement and/orchange.

The two committees collaborated to planthis year's Knowledge Café, "Abuse andMental Illness: Learning More at theKnowledge Café" held on May 10th atCMHS. The Knowledge Café showcasedservices and supports for adults who mayhave experienced abuse, and broughttogether many disciplines to celebrateNursing Week.

The event also featured live music byGeorge and Judy Mersereau, KarenDurocher and Tanya Lysiak-Globe. Onbehalf of the PMHNPC, a special thanksto Impressions Catering for a wonderfullycatered event.

Staff at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamiltonand residents of Hamilton and Ontario'scentral south region will soon see somedramatic enhancements to patient carefacilities at St. Joseph's.

On Thursday, May 24, 2007 hundreds ofstaff and friends of the hospital gatheredtogether in the Frank Charles MillerAmphitheatre and learned how a $5 million gift from Mr. David Braley andMs. Nancy Gordon will benefit staff,patients and programs at St. Joseph’s.

One million dollars will support a new inpatient unit dedicated to comprehensivekidney-urinary care, further enhancing theclinical and academic scope of theMcMaster Institute of Urology at St.Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and thehospital's renowned Nephrology program.St. Joseph's is the regional centre for urologyand nephrology, home to the busiestlaparoscopic kidney and prostate surgerycentre in Canada, the largest hemodialysiscentre in Canada, and Hamilton's onlyorgan transplant program.

"The end result will be enhanced patient care, world-class facilities and anunparalleled training ground for thehealthcare professionals of tomorrow,"states Dr. J. Paul Whelan, Director of theMcMaster Institute of Urology at St.Joseph's Healthcare.

The remaining $4 million will support thecreation of eighteen newstate-of-the-art operatingrooms capable of offer-ing the latest technologiesto patients and supporting St. Joseph'sHealthcare's role as aleader in the provision ofcancer surgeries. St.Joseph's Healthcarealready performs 44% ofregional cancer surgeriesand that number willgrow to 60% in the nextfew years, including 90-95% of cancer surgeries in the thoracicand urologic areas.

Ms. Dee Frisina, who has been nursing atSt. Joseph's for 20 years, 17 of those inthe Operating Rooms, speaks to how Mr.Braley's gift will impact the staff and theirworking environment, "Over the years, I have watched our OR become a leadingsurgical centre within the community.This new financial support will unques-tionably enhance the excellence andexpertise we are able to provide to ourpatients and community. Nurses are thelifeblood of this hospital, and this generousgift will not only provide new state-of

the-art operating rooms, but also increaseopportunities for learning and education,and have a tremendous and positiveimpact on our staff environment."

Dr. Smith concluded by stating "The hospital's Board of Trustees and I takegreat care in establishing our priorities for the future of this hospital. This gift is a bold investment in the continuedexcellence of surgical, urologic and kidneycare which will provide state-of-the-artfacilities for clinical and academic leadersto ensure our patients get the very besttreatment."
