A special thank you to Demetri’s Restaurant in Deerfield for hosting monthly lunch outings for our Residents.

Welcome to the June issue of the Greek American Times. In June we welcomed the sunshine and tried to enjoy some of the beautiful summer days out on our patio. Our Residents also enjoyed some fun outings which included, CiCi’s Restaurant for some delicious pizza, Demetri’s Restaurant in Deerfield and our monthly outing to the movies. We also celebrated our dads with some “Father’s Day Fun in the Sun.” We enjoyed some delicious treats and refreshments and live entertainment with our Elvis impersonator. Everyone who attended had a wonderful time. Our fun continued with some special visits from our monthly groups. We welcomed St.Haralambos, St.Demetrios of Elmhurst, the Ladies of Ahladokampos and St.Nicholas Philoptochos. All of our visitors came with delicious treats for each of the Residents and shared many laughs with us. We also celebrated our dedicated volunteers with a beautiful luncheon at Maggianos in Old Orchard. The hard work, dedication, support and your commitment to our home does not go unnoticed. Thank you for all you do and for helping make our home a better place. In July we look forward to less rain and more sunshine. We have many outings planned including, the Dollar Tree, the movies, and an outing to Indian Trails library. The fun doesn't end there we will also be heading downtown for some sightseeing, and plan on celebrating National Cheesecake day with a visit to Eli’s Cheesecake Factory in Chicago. For our Residents who want to explore their love of wine, we welcome you to join us on an outing to Lynfred Winery where we will learn to taste wine like the pros. -The Life Enrichment Department

Therapy Patient of the Month – June 2013

Congratulations to our June therapy patient of the month, Constantine Alen! Mr. Alen will be returning home to his apartment this week after a rigorous course of physical and occupational therapy. When he first came to Greek American, Mr. Alen was not allowed to put any weight onto his right leg. During his first week at Greek American, when he was confined to a wheelchair, Mr. Alen told his therapist that he was going to stay for therapy until he could walk out the door to go home. That determination to walk combined with his therapists’ dedication to providing intense, focused therapy paid off. When Mr. Alen returns home, he will be able to resume his regular activities. We are honored that Mr. Alen chose us for his rehabilitation. We wish him good health and safety for many years to come.

A Note From Our Dietitian... A Note From Environmental Services... Dear Family and Friends, The Greek American Rehabilitation and Care Centre was founded on the basis of providing “Quality Care With Genuine Hospitability” and is honored and privileged to care for your love one. Currently over 90% of our residents rely on the facility to launder the clothing therefore it is crucial that all clothing is given to the receptionist for labeling immediately upon being brought to the facility and prior to giving it to the resident. All clothing must be labeled by the facility, regardless if the clothing is being laundered by the family or facility. Please do not leave items to be labeled at the nursing station or in the resident room. Once the clothing has been labeled the laundry staff will deliver it to the resident room. If the family wishes to do the laundry please provide a hamper to put the soiled clothing in and also inform social services in order to have a “family will do laundry” sign placed. Also, we would like to remind you that residents rooms are furnished with a limited amount of space for storage of clothing so we ask that the family rotates clothing that is appropriate based on the season. In addition, food brought into the facility for a resident must conform to the residents prescribed diet and must be stored in a secure container (ex: Tupper wear). The container of food must be labeled and dated with the residents name and date that the food was prepared and/or opened. If you choose to bring food into the facility, please make an extra effort to inspect your loved ones drawers and food contents to ensure that the food continues to be safe for consumption and properly stored. If you have any feedback or suggestions, please feel free to call me at (847) 459-8700 ext: 1025 or send an email to [email protected] Thank you very much for your support and cooperation. Sincerely, Amira Ibrahimovic Director of Housekeeping

Tips for controlling food intake during summer BBQs, and the upcoming Holiday Weekend.

4th of July Weekend is right around the corner, it can be tempting to feel that holiday cheer, and forego you healthy eating regimen entirely. The typical BBQ meal consisting, of chips with guacamole, lemonade (12 ounces), a cheeseburger on white bun, creamy potato salad, 1 cup watermelon and a regular beer contains an average of 1,100 calories.

There are a few things you can do to still have a good time, but not get off track.

1) July 4th is traditionally grilled food which is one of the healthier cooking methods. Choose choices such as boneless skinless chicken breast, chicken sausage, and turkey burgers. Beef burgers are even an okay choice as long as the meat is extra lean. Tip for beef burger is to have it cooked well so most of the fat and grease cook off.

2) Skip calorie dense, snacks and drinks. It is easy to over consume on chips, pop and beer, especially when sitting outside with friends and family. Make sure to hydrate well before attending a party, and keep water handy. Being dehydrated can be

confused for hunger. Also bring options like a fresh veggie tray, salsa, and fruit kabobs. This way you can still have fun socializing and snacking. 3) Bring whole wheat choices. Buy whole wheat hamburger buns, tortilla chips and

other healthy choices. So that you can get the most nutritious option. 4) Get moving. After your meal play volley ball, bags or badminton to avoid mindless

eating. Stay consistent with your workout during the weeks leading up to the BBQ. Everyone will be seeing how good you look since you've been working out, so be an example to them. Talk up your work outs and healthy eating regimen. You really don't want to alienate the entire family or friends by saying the food isn't good enough for you, take the opportunity to educate and have fun at the same time. Some of the people your around will have a need for what you know and in the back of their mind they just might be wanting to talk to you about it. Most of all, Have fun doing it.
