Just passing through, open roads ahead! This 103-year-old vehicle passed through Glasgow recently and is circumnavigating the United States. The starting point was from York, Pennsylvania on May 28th and will hopefully be returning there later this fall on October 1st, give or take a day or two. Owned by Joe and Betty Swann, they had put 2,800 miles on this 1912 E-M-F by the time they hit Glasgow. This car runs all day long from

35-40 miles per hour, although theyve kicked er up to 55 mph on occasion. A couple of antique car buffs, when they bought this E-M-F it was 95% complete and it was in running condition. But it was poorly done, so everything had to be redone, Joe said. A lot of work, but well worth it, he added. And they did it to drive it. More on Joe and Bettys 1912 E-M-F inside.

The story of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainments Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters-from T. rex to Napoleon-the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression. But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he-alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob-ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow. The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award (R) winner Sandra Bullock), the worlds first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind...from annihilation.

The Year 1912 William H. Taft is President The Titanic sinks on April 15th There is no such thing as World War There is no income tax Women do not have the right to vote There is no Federal Reserve U.S. population is 95 million Average annual income is $1,000 A postage stamp is 2 There are no gas stations.

Gasoline is purchased at the local hardware store in five gallon cans. The quality of gasoline is terrible, sometimes with a rating as low as 50 octane, and sells for 15 per gallon.

E-M-Fs were built in Detroit, MI, from 1908 to 1912. This independent company was founded by three automotive giants: Barney Evertt (former automotive body manufacturer), William Metzger (former advertising manager for Cadillac), and Walter Flanders (former production genius who promoted the assembly line for Henry Ford). The E-M-F name is derived from the initials of Everett, Metzger and Flanders.

During this period, E-M-F was the second largest producer of automobiles, second only to Ford. It was a medium priced car and was a good car for those times. Approximately 50,000 were built during the four-year period. The Studebaker Company (manufacturer of horse-drawn wagons) had been contracted to sell the E-M-F along side their wagons. The relationship between E-M-F and Studebaker did not go well and the original partners bailed out and sold their interest to Studebaker. Before the end of 1912, E-M-F was gone.

The open body style of this car was referred to as a touring body. The car is powered by a 30 horsepower, four-cylinder engine, which must be hand cranked to start it.

Their time spent shopping in downtown Glasgow complete, Joe Swann cranks the E-M-F to get it started as local farmer/rancher R.J. Winderl waits to hear it fire up: purrs like a kitten! continued on page 7

The best part of this trip is going through these little towns, Joe and Betty Swann both agreed in front of Markles Hardware. .The people are friendly.

  • Notice that the E-M-Fs steering wheel is on the right-hand side. Before the automobile, heavy horse-drawn vehicles had a massive brake lever on the outside of the vehicle close to the drivers seat. Since most men were right handed, it made sense that the lever be located on the right side and that the driver sit on the right so he could operate the lever with his right arm. Most early cars had the brake lever and other controls on the outside of the vehicle and on the right side for the same reason. So, why left hand drive now? Streets in those days were mostly unpaved and were traveled by both horses and automobiles. If all vehicles drove on the right side of the street and the driver sat on the right of the seat, then the lady would have to enter and exit on the left (the street side). She would be wearing a long dress and would be forced to step in mud and horse manure. Recognizing this problem, Henry Ford set the standard for left hand drive automobiles with the hand brake and shifting lever in the center so the driver could still operate the controls with his right arm. The lady could then enter and exit the vehicle on the curb side close to the buildings. In summary, why did we switch from right to left? Answer: Horse manure!!!

A comfortable cruising speed for both man and machine is 30-40 mph, but records indicate in 1910 it averaged 65.2 mph at the Atlanta Speedway. It consumes fuel at 15 to 20 miles per gallon depending on the terrain. The lanterns are fueled by kerosene and the head lights are powered by an acetylene-type gas.

In 1913, the E-M-F name was replaced by Studebaker. On June 20, 2005, the E-M-F Plant on Piquette Street (at John R) caught fire and within a few hours it was gone. The five-alarm fire nearly spread to the famous Ford Piquette Plant where Henry Ford built the first Model T.

Keep on truckin! Joe and Betty Swanns E-M-F is an original car and not a reproduction. It was one of the last E-M-F automobiles produced. In September 2009, this car climbed to the top of Mt. Evans in Colorado on the highest paved road (14,265 ft) in America.

  • Late Nite Laffs

Describe yourself in 3 words:1. Lazy

A little boy walks in to the lounge one Sunday morning while his dad is reading the paper. Where does poo come from? he asks. The father feeling a little perturbed that his 5 year old son is already asking difficult questions thinks for a moment and says: Well you know we just ate breakfast? Yes, answers the boy. Well the food goes into our tummies and our bodies take out all the good stuff, and then whatever is left over comes out when we go to the toilet, and that is poo. The little boy looks perplexed, and stares at him in stunned silence for a few seconds and says, So.... what about tigger?

A woman is calling her cell provider. Woman: I dont get my text messages. Tech support: Have you tried reading them again? An American dude, a French dude, and a Japanese dude barely survive a shipwreck. While clinging to floating debris and paddling towards shore they discuss what they will do to survive. The American dude says: Well, I am a carpenter by trade, so Ill build us a shelter. The French dude says: Ho-hoh! Yers trulee eez the greatest chef ever! I shall make grand meals to feed us! It gets decided that the Japanese dude would be in charge of supplies. After kicking for hours they finally reach the shoreline, completely exhausted. The Japanese dude gets up and sprints with deer-like speed into the jungle. The American and French dudes look at each other and shrug, then get to work. By the following evening, the American and French dudes have a reasonable shelter, a reliable firepit, and have enjoyed a few good meals. They decide to go on a search for their friend. Hours go by as they trek through the thick jungle, no sign of their friend anywhere. Just as they are about to give up, the Japanese guy jumps down from a tree, throws his arms up and yells out: SUPPLIES!!!
