by Katy Heinecke of the Sisseton Courier (South Dakota) On June 6, Emit Valnes, husband of Jayme (Shanks) Valnes and his roping partner Bill Van Lith and wife Amy had just dropped off the Van Lith kids with grandparents 20 minutes prior, and were back on the road, headed to a rodeo in Russell, Minnesota. They were in Marshall, MN traveling 45 mph when Emit removed his seatbelt to take off his jacket. From the corner of his eye, he spotted a car coming at them. It ran a stop sign and drove right in to them. Bill swerved to the left to avoid the car, but with a horse trailer in tow, it was impossible to avoid being hit by the on-coming car. The impact caused the car to swing around and hit the passengers side where Emit was. The horse trailer came unhooked, and rolled in the median. Due to the weight of the trailer, the truck kept going and hit the ditch and bounced, throwing them to the opposite side of the road. Bill sustained bruised ribs, a badly cut left arm and hurt right shoulder. Amy broke some toes and had bruised toes and a badly bruised leg. Emit broke his back, bruised his right elbow and tendon, a nasty cut to his right leg and a 3 inch cut on the left side of his head. I remember it all so vividly, like it was slow motion, Emit recalls.

Janelle (Shanks) Bargmann takes her brother-in-law Emit on one of his first few walks. Youll find out why his wife Jayme wasnt taking him on a walk later in the story.

never saw us. Emit unfortunately remembers every detail down to the drivers gray

  • hair and cap he wore to the make and color of the car. The driver of the car died on impact. The ambulance arrived and took Emit to the Marshall Hospital, where they told him the injuries were too severe for them to handle, and he was then air lifted to Avera McKennan in Sioux Falls, SD. He spent six days in the hospital. The healthcare that I received at Avera McKennan was top notch. The doctors, nurses and staff were the best Ive ever had; they took excellent care of me. They checked on me every single hour. Emit had experienced lots of bloating, and the doctors were worried about internal damage and bleeding and were hesitant to do surgery under those conditions. The T12 vertebrae was broken and chipped, which could fall and lodge between the membranes that wraps around the spinal cord, putting pressure on it. They were worried it will calcify and Emit could become paralyzed. He was given two options to cut the rib cage open from the front to remove the chip OR to take the back side of the T12 vertebrae out. He would then have to have rods put in his back for support and hed never ride a horse again, and this was not an option for Valnes. He has been wearing a full upper body back brace, and the pain has been excruciating. Its been a long six weeks to say the least, he said. He has made a lot of progress after being bed-ridden for the first week. With the help of his sister-in-law, Janelle Bargmann, mother-in-law, Janice Shanks and his Mother Debbie to help get him started walking again, Emit is now able to walk to the mailbox by himself without his walker. This was a very slow progression, which required a lot of patience, but he knows the key is to keep moving and not sit idle. Emits sister spent time at the couples home, made and froze many crock pot meals for them to warm up at their convenience, which has been an enormous help. Emits mother, Debbie, has spent many days and nights caring for all of his needs (from making meals, doing laundry, cleaning

house, helping him get out of bed and encouraging him). Emits mother-in-law, Janice Shanks was also a fantastic helper for the first two and a half weeks after the accident. She even missed celebrating her 50th Wedding Anniversary with her husband to help her daughter, Jayme and husband, Emit. Neighbors, family and friends pitch in to help. Anxiety has been a problem. As much as I appreciate everything that everyone is doing, it is difficult when Im used to getting up early. I had a construction business, ran the ranch, rodeo-d, trained horses, and all of that is gone. Emits dad, David, has been taking care of everything on the ranch for Emit, doing everything that Emit would have normally been able to do, from doing chores, finishing AI-ing cows, sorting and hauling cows to grass, fencing and helping put up his hay. Our neighbors, Josh & Carla Anderson have been unbelievable! They have done so much. Sorted and moved cows, pulled weeds, mowed lawn, did laundry, made meals, check our cows every week, and helped put up hay. It is a blessing to have them, they are part of our family, stated Emit and Jayme. The outpouring of support, care and concern in a small rural community is alive and strong. Bill has become like a brother to me, said Valnes. He calls two to three times a day, and the couple brought continued on next page

  • their two young daughters to see Emit in the hospital where they, along with Emits niece Stella, were able to show their affection by plastering his back brace with stickers. The family has been there to check cows every other weekend, along with Emits other roping buddies, Jim Thell, Darren Zuehlke, Ryan Carlson and Luke Nordquist. They treat my calves, helped my dad sort cows, fixed my fence and took cows and horses to pasture. They just take care of me unconditionally. Bill is also taking care of his own injured horse, along with Emits since the two horses were cut out of the trailer at the accident scene. Emit feels that if it werent for how Bill handled the accident, he may not be alive today. It could have been a lot worse. I am glad to be alive, but have had many mixed emotion, from being mad and angry, to scared and lonely. To say the least its been a rollercoaster ride for me. Its been tough to sleepa lot of flashbacks, jerking and jolting, reliving the crash. Its been pretty difficult but I am thankful to be alive and healing up. When it rains, it pours. Four days after Emit and Jayme returned home from the hospital, Jayme experienced an accident of her own. She was selling a two year old horse to a young guy. She picked him out from a group of 20 and got him to the trailer. The horse was very easy going and calm and had taken two steps into the trailer. The young boy moved quickly and spooked the horse, causing the horse to retreat quickly from the trailer, right over the top of Jayme. After a quick trip to the emergency room with her mother-in-law, it was found that she had stretched her ACL and tore her MCL and PCL. She will be wearing a full leg brace for up to three months, along with physical therapy with hopes of no surgery to be needed. The two have been spending a lot of quality time together in their current Laid-up situations. They recently celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary together, while in the hospital, but at least they were together. Jayme Valnes is the daughter of Dennis and Janice Shanks and granddaughter of George and Maxine Nicol. Next week, see how the program Farm Rescue came to Emit and Jaymes rescue.

Reds squeak past Helena at State A Tourney While baseball fans attending the State A American Legion Baseball Tournament in Kalispell witnessed a pair of blowouts in the first two opening round games on Thursday, the next two games were anything but that. The Glasgow Reds survived a tough battle with the Helena

Representatives to win 5-4 in a come-from-behind victory. The Reds, behind eight innings of pitching from Keil Krumwiede, brought in Jason Thibault to shut the door in a scoreless ninth inning. The Reds will now face Kalispell tonight at 7:00. The Lakers prevailed over the Vauxhall Spurs in a wild 10-9 crowd-pleaser

(probably not pleasing to the Spurs Fans). Tune into KLTZ (1240 AM) for all the play-by-play action as the Reds take on the hosts of the tournament. Schedule can be found on page 9.
