34 | Mr. Harper’s Top 10 Favorite Peoples & Cultures As you may imagine, I am often asked to identify my favorite destinations in the world. Generally I protest that it would be quite impossible: places possess individual charm and comparisons are not only invidious but pointless. But of course I do have favorites.

Be Amazed by PortugalOne of Europe’s least-known countries, Portugal never fails to surprise and delight the intrepid travelers who venture there. The striking landscapes, ornate, traditional architecture, sun-drenched coastlines and exquisite wines of this country—just one-third the size of Italy—make Portugal one of Europe’s most delightful destinations.

DAY 1

Arrive in Lisbon and settle into your hotel. In the afternoon, wan-der the evocative and labyrinthine Alfama district (Lisbon’s oldest) and ascend to the Castle of St. George for panoramic views of the city.

DAYS 2 & 3

Explore hilly Lisbon. Visit the iconic Belém Tower, the unique National Coach Museum and the elaborate St. Jerónimos Monastery. The sur-prisingly white streets of the Bairro Alto are lined with an array of

shops, lively side-walk cafés and convivial bars.

DAY 4

Make a day trip to seaside Sintra to tour its dramatic palaces and imposing Moorish fortress. It’s worth the 30-minute journey; in 1809, Lord Byron wrote to a friend, “I must just observe that the village of Cintra…is the most beauti-ful in the world.”

DAY 5

Depart Lisbon and make the short drive to Obidos, a pictur-esque white hill town overflowing with bougainvillea. If not traveling in the high season, also visit Naz-

aré, Portugal’s most famous (and famously overrun) fishing vil-lage. This traditional town on the coast is undeniably lovely, but it can be overly crowded in summer.

Continue north to the historic university town of Coimbra, which Andrew Harper describes as “gra-cious, cultivated and hospitable.”

DAY 6

Take a full day to meander the winding alleys of the old town of Coimbra. In the 700-year-old univer-sity, the astonishingly ornate baroque library merits special atten-tion, Mr. Harper notes.

DAY 7

Bid farewell to Coimbra and drive north to the lovely provincial capital of Viseu. In addition to its fine cathedral and notable museum focusing on the works of Vasco Fernandes, Viseu is known for its excellent selection of local handicrafts. After lunch, continue on to the Douro Val-

ley, home to many of Portugal’s best vine-yards and wineries.

DAY 8

Explore the scenic grandeur of the Douro Valley region, where “the river winds languidly between steep hills planted with vineyards and dotted with handsome quintas (wine estates) and villages framed by cypress trees,” writes Mr. Harper. Take a leisurely river cruise, and visit some of the world-class wineries.

DAY 9

After a leisurely morn-ing, make the short drive north to Vidago, and take a well-earned afternoon of leisure to enjoy the grounds and facilities of your palace resort, including perhaps the best spa in Portugal, accord-ing to Mr. Harper.

DAY 10

Make a day trip to remote Bragança, Por-tugal’s best-preserved medieval town. Inside the city walls, tour the citadel and ancient Upper Town. If time and energy permit, advance into the nearby Parque Natural de Montesinho, one of the wildest regions in Europe. A host of rare birds and mammals inhabit this ruggedly beautiful landscape, dotted with a number of tiny villages where life carries on much as it did a century ago.

DAY 11

From Vidago, it’s a short drive to Guimarães, Portugal’s first capital. Stroll through the atmospheric medieval core, with its weathered

noble townhouses, craft shops and 10th-century castle. Drive on to neighboring Braga, Por-tugal’s religious capital and its most conserva-tive city, known for its profusion of churches, fountains and gardens. End the day in Porto.

DAY 12

Enjoy a full day in

Porto, the historic center of which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Tour the ornate stock exchange, visit some Port wine lodges and do some final shopping.

DAY 13

Depart from Porto’s airport and connect to your flight home. H

In the 700-year-old university, the astonishingly ornate baroque library merits special attention, Mr. Harper notes.

to relax on a glorious beach and the other traveler prefers to picnic amid cool mountain scenery, few itineraries would satisfy them both. Few—but not none.

New Zealand’s South Island

Catalonia

This historically rich province of Spain packs an incredible diver-sity of landscapes into a small area. Its capital, Barcelona, ranks

among the greatest cities in Europe. Just 90 minutes to the north, the rugged Pyr-enees form a formidable barrier between Spain and France. And to Barcelona’s northeast, the beaches of Costa Brava have the surreal rocky outcrops and spires which inspired Salvador Dalí.

Start your journey in Barcelona, which contains “some of the best-preserved medieval structures in Europe, as well as a trea-sure trove of imaginative contemporary buildings,” according to Andrew Harper. The whimsical constructions of Antoni Gaudí have to be seen to be believed—some of them appear to have been grown rather than built. Barce-lona’s restaurants also never fail to impress. (Mr. Harper recommends no fewer than 12 in the Harper Collection, ranging from chic con-temporary tapas bars to grand establishments serving Catalan classics.) Oenophiles shouldn’t miss a day trip into the Penedès wine region just to the southwest of the city, where Spain’s famed Cava is produced, among other excellent wines.

From Barcelona, it’s an easy drive to the Pyr-

enees. Mr. Harper describes the scene: “After passing through the Cadi Tunnel, you are con-fronted by a line of jagged 10,000-foot peaks rising directly from an alpine valley. The Sègre

It would take months, even years, to explore all of New Zealand’s wonders and, too often, travel-ers seem determined to rush

around the entire country, stringing together a series of one-night stays in an effort to see everything. But because the country is so compact, it’s possible to have a wonderfully varied itinerary—including every-thing from glaciers to vineyards to sunny beaches—by staying in just two or three key locations.

Mountain church in the Pyrenees Aiguestortes National Park

Cadaqués

Akaroa Banks Peninsula

River winds its way through a picture-postcard landscape of forested slopes and flower-strewn meadows down to the digni-fied old town of La Seu d’Urgell.” From this base, take guided hikes to unspoiled villages perched high in the Pyrenees; kayak in tranquil lakes and streams; head out for a spin on a mountain

bike; or take in the entire landscape from a hot-air balloon. Quirky Andorra lies just to the north.

Three hours from La Seu d’Urgell, the Costa

Brava makes for a relaxing end to your Span-ish journey. Although the name translates as “wild coast,” many of the area’s beaches have been overdeveloped. Fortunately, Mr. Harper recommends two properties in the unspoiled countryside immediately inland, both of which have access to the area’s most untrammeled and picturesque beaches. After a few days meander-ing along the coast, exploring beautiful towns such as Cadaqués and Girona, return to Barce-lona and take your flight home.

Consider Christchurch. The city’s “cultural pre-cinct” contains notable institutions such as the Canterbury Museum and the striking modernist Christchurch Art Gal-lery. In the countryside just outside of town, roll-ing vineyards, olive groves and manicured gardens provide a magnificent set-ting from which to explore the surrounding region. In

nearby Akaroa, set on the rim of an extinct volcano, it’s easy to spend a full day relaxing on the beaches. But be sure to make time to kayak into sea caves and swim with Hector’s dolphins, one of the world’s smallest and rarest species. A helicopter to the Banks Peninsula affords access to even more isolated and pristine beaches backdropped by rugged cliffs.

A two-hour drive northwest of Christchurch brings you to dramatic Arthur’s Pass, where the summit of Mount Murchison rises to 7,875 feet. In this sensationally sce-nic national park, you can kayak on crystal-clear alpine lakes, fish for trout in unspoiled rivers, ride horses along high-country trails and, of course, hike through the moun-tains, trekking through virgin forests and imposing valleys. Those in need of a little post-hike pampering can indulge in a spa treatment underneath a veritable amphitheater of snow-capped peaks.

Kauai

When visiting the islands of Hawaii, it can be extremely tempting to stay at your resort, savoring the tropi-cal gardens, inviting pools, sybaritic spas, top-notch

restaurants and exquisite beaches. For those willing to depart these luxurious confines for a time, Hawaii offers an embar-rassment of scenic riches.

In addition to its famed beaches, the island of Kauai boasts the immense Mount Waialeale, a 5,200-foot mountain sacred to the Hawaiians. This shield volcano is best viewed by helicop-ter, an unforgettable way to see otherwise inaccessible parts of Kauai. The incredible views of narrow cliffs, misty canyons and silvery waterfalls crashing into verdant jungle make this flight well worth the price.

Come back to earth and enjoy some hiking in the other-worldly landscapes of Kauai. Waimea Canyon, known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” dazzles with its red lava-rock walls clad with vibrantly green tropical foliage, broken by occa-sional waterfalls. Spelunking fans shouldn’t miss the landmark Maniniholo Dry Cave at Ha’ena, set at the base of a towering cliff. Nearby, the beautiful Waikapalae and Waikanaloa wet caves have equally impressive rock formations. And history

buffs will want to allow time to explore the island’s enigmatic archaeological sites, includ-ing a centuries-old fishpond of mysterious origin and the many sacred pre-Christian ruins along the Wailua River.

Much of Kauai is best explored by water, however. The drama of the Napali Coast can only be accessed by boat, airplane or arduous hike. A leisurely cruise along this astonishing stretch of cliffs, valleys and

waterfalls—cocktail in hand—is the most civilized option, allowing you to take in the beauty of the scenery at a much more reasonable pace than by plane. It will become clear why the directors of “Jurassic Park” and “King Kong” chose to film here. Just below the sea’s surface, an array of colorful fish, corals and other marine life can easily be observed while snorkeling. Kayaking along the Hanalei River provides a relaxing means to explore the lovely Hanalei Valley, or for an even more tradi-tional experience, explore Hanalei Bay by guided sailing canoe.

If you can manage even half of the above, you’ve earned at least a day or two to savor the good life on Kauai’s superlative beaches before heading home. H

10 Days in PanamaIn the November 2011 Hideaway Report, Mr. Harper described his discoveries in Panama, a country “blessed with incredible geographic diversity: lowland tropical rainforests, dense cloud forests near the border with Costa Rica, and mangrove swamps along stretches of both the Pacific and the Caribbean coastlines.” Now that a number of sophisticated hotels have opened their doors, the time has never been better to explore the world’s most famous isthmus.

DAY 1

Arrive in Panama

City, most likely in the evening. Check into your hotel and relax after the day’s travel.

DAY 2

Explore Casco Viejo, set in a neat grid pattern that invites casual strolling. The area dates to 1673, when it was built on a strategically defen-sible peninsula shortly after pirates ravaged the original city, now known as Panama Viejo. (Mr. Harper lays

out a detailed walking tour of Casco Viejo in the Hideaway Report.) In the afternoon, take some time to enjoy the ameni-ties of your resort.

DAY 3

Take a day to visit one of the engineering wonders of the world, the Panama Canal, a short drive outside the city center. Also delve into the nearby Soberanía National Park, a pristine tropi-cal rainforest noted for its remarkably diverse species.

DAY 4

From Panama City, it’s a 50-minute flight to David and an hour’s drive on to Boquete, “a delightful small town 4,000 feet above sea level in the cool highlands of Chiriquí Province,” according to Mr. Harper. After settling into your hotel, tour one of the local coffee farms. The high-quality beans produced in this region are some of the most expensive in the world.

DAY 5

Spend the day hiking in the cloud forests around Barú Volcano,

home to hundreds of species of birds includ-ing the resplendent quetzal. Alterna-tively, go kayaking or mountain-biking, or have a soak in one of the natural hot springs.

DAY 6

Return by air to Panama City, and take a charter flight to Pedasí on the Azuero Peninsula. Other-wise it’s a four-hour drive to this region of rolling hills and golden-sand beaches, “renowned as a major source of Panama-nian folklore, as well as for its exuberant carnival celebrations,” Mr. Harper notes.

DAY 7

Spend the day relax-ing on the beach, or perhaps enjoy-ing some fishing,

mountain-biking or horseback riding.

DAY 8

Make a day trip to the Isla Iguana Wildlife Refuge, an island reserve surrounded by an impressive coral reef ideal for snor-keling. The nearby Isla Canas, reached through a series of mangrove-lined canals, is famous for the sea turtles nesting on its wide beaches.

DAY 9

After a late breakfast, return to Panama City. Do any last-minute souvenir shopping in the afternoon, or just relax at your hotel.

DAY 10

Transfer to the air-port and board your flight home. H

There aren’t many destinations where you can go skiing after breakfast and surfing before dinner. But that diversity is a major part of the appeal of a trip to Chile, which boasts a range of topographies unlike most others, from verdant forests to arid deserts, and just about everything in between.

“Chile has so many different types of climates, that you can be in the middle of a snowy landscape in the morning and floating on a lake in the afternoon,” notes Matías de Cristóbal, general director of Awasi, a hotel in the striking Atacama region of northern Chile. “It is such a long country,” says Cristóbal, in reference to the fact the country measures approximately 2,700 miles from north to south, but less than 100 miles from west to east, “that it has many different types of land-scapes and climates.”

To showcase this and the many other charms of this South American gem, we consulted with Cris-tóbal, as well as two other locals—Nicolás Sahli, managing partner of the Singular Patagonia

hotel, and Javier Echecopar, Abercrombie & Kent’s regional sales director for South America—who paint a portrait of a dream destination few countries can top.

Okay, let’s get right to it. What makes Chile so special?

Cristóbal: “Chile is one of the most developed countries in Latin America. There’s great infrastructure in most of its main tourist destinations, it has good airports, an excellent local air-line with excellent connections, it is very safe and the locals are very friendly. Also because it has such different types of

landscapes and climates, it is a great place to visit year round.”

Sahli: “It is a very stable country, politically and economically. It is also an amazing place with beautiful landscapes, a pristine environment and wild flora and fauna. One of the attractions for visitors is the little population the region has.”

Echecopar: “Chile is blessed with dramatic scenery. The Andes Mountains, with their varied

forms and colors, provide a constant backdrop from the north-ernmost tip to the very end of the world. The mountains serve as the backbone of a country that’s riddled with contrasting landscapes, from one of the most beautiful deserts in north-ern Chile to some of the most remote and pristine locations on the continent, in between the fjords, granite walls, rivers, lakes and glaciers of Patagonia. And unlike other places on earth, these landscapes remain mostly untouched, providing a unique sense of discovery and exploration.”

Where would you send someone for the ultimate Chilean experience?

Cristóbal: “I would recommend both Atacama and Chiloé Island, and its neighboring archipelago. Atacama is in the north and Chiloé in the south. Both have very different land-scapes, climates and cultures, which is shown in their local festivities, customs and food.”

Sahli: “Definitely Patagonia and Atacama.”

Echecopar: “Three days in the Atacama Desert would be memorable. The combination of wildlife, multicolored desert lagoons and the spectacular scenery provided by the moun-tains is enough for a month.”

You each mentioned Atacama. What can you tell us about the area?

Cristóbal: “Atacama is the driest desert on earth and is located only two hours by plane from the capital of Chile, Santiago.”

Page 32: Jul/Aug/Sept 2012 Traveler

30 | JULY/AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2012 ANDREWHARPER.COM

Chile’s other immensely popular region, located farther south, is Patagonia. What does it have to offer?

Sahli: “The weather in Patagonia is unpredictable, as you can easily experi-ence four seasons in one day. But that’s part of the experience. It includes fjords, mountains, emerald lakes and Torres del

Paine National Park.”

Echecopar: “The northern part of Patagonia remains one of the truly unex-plored destinations in South America. Fjords, granite mountains, rushing riv-ers and glaciers have jealously guarded this beautiful area from mankind. It has some of the best fly-fishing in the world, in beautiful blue rivers that quickly descend from the Andes into the sea. The rivers are also a premier location for rafting and kayaking in some of the most breathtaking scenery anywhere. The mountains, glaciers and forests provide exceptional trekking adventures. Yet one of the least known facts about northern Patagonia is the presence of blue whales, which are observable from boats that navigate the fjords.”

It sounds like there’s a lot of opportunity for outdoor adventure throughout Chile.

Echecopar: “Chile is well-known as a playground for outdoor activities. The diversity of outdoor experiences, from horseback riding in the beautiful deserts to kayaking pristine rivers in Patagonia, is something unique to the country.”

Can you fill us in on some of the most popular outdoor activities?

Cristóbal: “You can ski in one of the ski resorts located less that an hour from Santiago. If your physical condition is adequate, I would recommend hiking up one of the volcanoes or descend-ing, with a bike, down the road from a small town called Talabre, while taking in the sights of the vast Atacama salt flat. In the salt flat, one can enjoy majestic views of the geological formations that have been built up over thousands of years. Another great option would be sandboarding on the dunes of Death Valley.”

Sahli: “Patagonia offers a wide range of expeditions, including kayaking, sailing through the fjords, trekking, horseback riding, bird watching, etc.”

Echecopar: “I love how close the mountains are from Santiago. You can leave the city and be hiking under glaciers in just a

couple of hours. That’s something very few world capitals can offer. The El

Morado National Park is my favorite hike in the Andes.”

What about for visitors who prefer a more relaxed approach for taking it all in?

Cristóbal: “If they love culture and local archaeology, I highly recommend a walk around Talabre and Catarpe, two small towns in the Atacama area full of history. Specifically, they might want to check out Pukará de Quitor, a national monument that speaks about the Span-iards’ arrival and discovery of the area hundreds of years ago. The nearby Tambo de Catarpe ruins show the Incas’ influence on the Atacama Desert and all of its people. The Termas de Puritama hot springs are another great option for enjoying a relaxing afternoon, as is taking in the sunset in the Salar de Ata-cama, observing the flamingos that are reflected on the lagoon.”

Sahli: “In Torres del Paine National Park, you can explore a very rich and pristine array of flora and fauna. The main animals are guanaco, ñandu, puma and different kinds of birds.”

Echecopar: “I’m a big fan of relaxing in the wine country. The combination of copious amounts of wine and the rolling hills of the vineyards makes me unwind completely.”

Can you tell us about a favorite spot that visitors won’t read about in all the guidebooks?

Echecopar: “One of the most amazing landscapes in Chile is near the city of Copiapó. To reach this area, called Laguna

Santa Rosa and Salar de Maricunga, you must drive for five hours through dirt roads and then overnight in a tent or a small cabin. Rugged as it may seem, the area provides ever-changing scenery and some of the most spectacular sunsets I’ve ever seen, in almost complete isolation. It is truly one of the hidden gems of Chile.”

When it comes to food, what are some of your favorite restaurants in Chile?

Cristóbal: “I would recommend La Casona, in San Pedro de Atacama.”

deep within Southern Chile, this 100-year-old

landmark building assumes new form as a

57-room luxury resort offering an authentic

Patagonian experience. Explore, relax in the

eco-spa, and indulge in the local flavors of the

restaurant, all the while connecting fully to

nature. Recommended since 2012.

• Authentic Patagonia Experience

Andrew Harper members receive: the best available non-restricted rates; an upgrade, when available on check-in; a 30-minute spa treat-ment per person for up to two people; and a private artisanal beer- and olive oil-tasting.

Standard rate inclusions: all meals and beverages, selection of daily expeditions and use of spa facili-ties, and for stays of three nights or longer, transfers to/from Punta Arenas or El Calafate airports.

Sahli: “Two that I like are Afrigonia and Mesita Larga, in Puerto Natales.”

Echecopar: “One of my favorites is Tiramisu, in Santiago. Besides the great pizzas, the atmosphere is fantastic, with all the locals mingling and having fun. It’s the only restaurant in Chile that has a waitlist every single day of the year. Some-times you don’t need a Michelin-starred restaurant, just a good Italian-style pizza and bottle of Chilean wine.”

Can you suggest a good place for visitors to pick up some souvenirs?

Cristóbal: “In San Pedro de Atacama, there is the local handicraft market. Look for aguayos [traditional textiles known for bright colors and patterns], locally made dolls and ceramics.”

Sahli: “Puerto Natales. There are some artisans there and many souvenir shops. In Santiago there is a foundation called Artesanias Chile that gathers the work of arti-sans from all over the country who exhibit and sell their art there.”

Echecopar: “Santiago offers several shops that work directly with local arti-sans. One of my favorites is Pura, which has a great combination of stylish taste and locally made items.”

Any final tips for travelers before they go?

Cristóbal: “Given the varied climate, pack clothes for both winter and sum-mer. And make sure you know how to ask for a pisco sour [the national drink of Chile].”

Sahli: “Most people visit Chile between October and March, which is summer in the southern hemisphere, but every sea-son has its own charm.”

Echecopar: “Chile is a very travel-friendly country. While it has local cuisine and cultures, the food is mostly

based on fresh local produce and hardly ever is spiced up. The people are kind and will spontaneously try to help make your trip easier by lending a hand if you look in need.” H

Pre-Columbian PeruOne of my all-time favorite archaeological sites is the Coricancha in Cusco. The name means “golden temple” in the indigenous Andean lan-guage, Quechua. Before the Spanish Conquest it was the Temple of the Sun, the epicenter of the Inca empire, served by around 4,000 priests. At the summer solstice, a solid gold sun disc reflected light onto a throne where only the Inca emperor was entitled to sit.

Most of the temple’s gold went to ransom the captive Atahualpa, and the massive baroque Convent of Santo Domingo was built on top of the ruins. The Coricancha appeared to have been obliterated. But much of it was still there; the Spanish had merely slathered white plaster

on top of the surviving Inca masonry. Today, following years of restoration, the outlines of the temple are clearly visible once more.

This has always struck me as a metaphor for Peru as a whole, where 45 percent of the population still claims descent from the indig-enous, pre-Columbian population. True, in big cities like Lima and Arequipa, European and mestizo faces predominate. But take the train from Cusco to Puno on Lake Titicaca and along the way you will see Quechua ladies in their scarlet polleras (skirts) and llicllas (capes) made from hand-woven llama and alpaca wool. The ancient world of the Andes is still very much alive.

The Samburu of Kenya’s Northern Frontier District

Traditional tribal life is controversial in Africa and Nairobi’s so-called Wabenzi, prosperous citizens named for their German limousine of choice, express embarrassment and indignation that Kenya still contains people who walk around with spears. The scarlet-cloaked Maasai and Samburu, they think, bring their country into disrepute and make it seem backward in the eyes of the world.

Things are generally more complicated than they seem. On my last trip to East Africa, I sat watching the sun go down atop a rocky outcrop, overlooking the homeland of the Samburu tribal people. My companion, who spoke perfect English, was dressed in tradi-tional robes, with a beaded headband and

beaded armlets. He carried a short sword and his spear lay in the grass behind us. (As the outcrop was the home of a large male leopard, this was quite reassuring.) We were drinking gin and tonic. During the week, he said, he wore a business suit and worked in an office in Nairobi. On the weekend, how-ever, he came home to see his parents at their manyatta and promptly changed back into traditional clothing. “It’s just so much more comfortable,” he explained.

Before too long, the Wabenzi will probably have their way and African tribal life will become extinct. Personally, I will be sad when the old ways are gone forever. The cul-tural inheritance of humanity will have been diminished.

Rome— Capital of StyleNumerous European cities have conspicuously stylish inhabitants. Although I am sure that the Parisians think theirs is self-evidently the capital of style, Rome is my personal candidate for the honor. This preference dates from a warm May evening, when I decided to kill time by taking a circu-itous route to an appointment at Rosati, a well-known café on the Piazza del Popolo. As I was staying at the Hassler

Hotel, I descended the Spanish Steps, wandered down the Via Condotti to the Corso and then strolled along the city’s great central artery to the piazza. Along the way, I became increasingly enraptured by the beauty of its citizens, both male and female. Not only were the people exceptionally good-looking, they were dressed with a carefully stud-ied flamboyance that would have been impossible for a northern European. And perhaps herein lies a crucial differ-ence: the Romans live in a city that is consistently warm and sunny, whereas the Parisians exist for much of the year beneath a roof of scudding gray clouds.

Although the Sherpas live in the foothills on the southern flank of Mount Everest, they are actually people of Tibetan origin. Over the centuries they carved out a niche for themselves as mountain guides, escorting traders across the high Himalayan passes. Their celebrated exploits with mountaineering expeditions came in the 20th century and culminated in Tenzin Norgay’s 1953 ascent of Everest with New Zealander, Edmund Hillary.

Today, Sherpa leaders, or sirdars, are in charge of most organized treks in the Himalayas and it has been my good fortune to spend time in the company of several outstanding individuals. All the clichés about the Sherpas turn out to be true: they are tough, generous, brave, uncom-plaining and good-humored. It would be hard to think of a more endearing and admirable combination of virtues. Even though moun-taineering and tourism have brought a degree of prosperity, theirs is still a hard life. A distressing number of young Sherpa men lose their lives on the great peaks every year, and even more succumb to diseases such as tuberculosis. But like their cousins, the Tibetans, the Sherpas are seldom seen without the light of a smile in their eyes.

I remember chatting with Ang Nima, the sirdar of a trek in the Anna-purna foothills. We were sitting in a grassy meadow at 6,000 feet, gazing up at a gigantic snow-covered massif. “This time last week I was on the summit of Everest,” Ang Nima remarked, almost as an aside. Clearly, for him, this was a perfectly normal weekly commute.

Botswana is a southern African country about the size of Texas, much of which is covered by the semi-arid grassland of the Kalahari. In the delightful novels of Alexander McCall Smith (of which “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” is the best-known), Botswana is portrayed as a kind of earthly paradise. It is prosperous and peaceful and its contented inhabitants consistently marvel at their great good fortune. In fact, it does bear a passing resemblance to the idyllic land of McCall Smith’s imagination. Botswana has the world’s largest diamond mine and only two million people, so there is money to go around, and the standards of educa-tion and health care are extremely high. Other African countries have natural assets—Nigeria, for example, has oil—but generally the profits get siphoned off by a kleptocratic elite. Not in Botswana, where large posters everywhere proclaim zero-tolerance for cor-ruption and draconian penalties for offenders.

I think that Botswana is my favorite African country: it is safe; there is little tribal friction; and unlike neigh-boring South Africa, there is no racial animosity. And its diamond wealth enables the government to take a civilized and planned approach to tourism. As a result, the great game areas, of which the most famous is the Okavango Delta, are unspoiled and teem with mil-lions of animals. It is easy to become gloomy when contemplating the future in many parts of Africa, but Botswana provides solid reason for hope.

Thailand—Monks and Modernity

In most respects Bangkok is a thoroughly modern place. Glass and steel towers dominate the skyline and the klongs, the old canals that once gave the city the sobriquet “the Ven-ice of the East” have mostly been constrained by concrete, or covered over and forgotten. But if you get up early, even in the heart of the metropolis, you will still see files of Bud-dhist monks in orange robes taking their begging bowls in search of breakfast. It is a charming scene that has remained unchanged for centuries.

In other Buddhist countries such as Sri Lanka and Japan, the reli-gion has been largely institutionalized, but in Thailand, monks are still inseparable from everyday life. And all young Thai men are expected to spend some time in a monastery, usually dur-ing the annual Rains Retreat in July, August and September. Some people claim that this enduring Buddhist influence has made the Thais unusually generous and tolerant. Personally, I just find it delightful that a modern, developed society is so manifestly at ease with its ancient cultural traditions.

Japan—Total Immersion

Nowadays there are commercial jet aircraft that can, theoretically, fly you nonstop to any other point on the globe in 20 hours or thereabouts. In my lifetime, the world had changed out of all recognition, not least because the human population has more than doubled. Personally I regret that so much of the world’s cultural diversity has been lost. The country that seems to buck this trend most effectively is Japan. Japan has jet planes and bullet trains and more electronic gadgets per capita than virtually anywhere else, but, for Westerners, it remains the world’s most resolutely foreign coun-try. I love landing at Narita to find

a man in white gloves polishing the already spotless chrome rail beside the steps up to Immigration. Immediately, I know I am in an utterly unfamiliar place where the customary rules may no longer apply. On one occasion, I remember taking a local train in the mountains northwest of Kyoto. My guide left me standing on the platform with my suitcase and briefly disap-peared. When he returned, I asked him what he’d been doing. He replied that he had been to tell the engine driver that he was responsible for the safety of a foreign visitor and that he should therefore drive his train with particu-lar care and attention.

Bali—Perfect Good Manners

Despite extensive tourist development in the south of the island, the center of Bali, especially around the Ayung River Gorge and the bohe-mian town of Ubud, remains an idyllic part of the world. Amandari, Four Seasons Sayan, and Como Shambhala Estate are all resorts of the highest quality, located in settings of startling natural beauty. But every time I return to Bali I reflect once again that it is the Balinese themselves who make the experience so special.

Balinese culture is a wonderfully exotic hybrid of Hinduism, Buddhism and animism. And at its heart lie elaborate rituals and cer-emonies, intricately choreographed and performed with scrupulous fidelity to ancient traditions. This culture requires the Balinese to control their emotions, to be generous and hospitable and, above all, to be exquisitely gracious and polite. As a result, the service in Bali-nese resorts is the best in the world. Even elsewhere in Asia, there isn’t any serious competition.

Australia— The Affability of Oz

As you may imagine, I am often asked to identify my favorite destinations in the world. Generally I protest that it would be quite impossible: places possess individual charm and comparisons are not only invidious but point-less. But of course I do have favorites and one of them is Sydney, Australia. Travel writers invariably insist that it is all about the harbor, that miracu-lous 11-mile-long inlet which allows you to swim off a white-sand beach, or sail an ocean-going yacht, right in the middle of a city of five million people. And they are correct, up to a point. Sydney Harbour is the most beautiful in the world and on a sunny day I can think of few places I would rather be than Rose Bay, with a generous plate of seafood and a glass of crisp white wine. But another factor that makes Sydney so delightful is the character of the Australians themselves, in particular that quality of easy-going affabil-ity that responds to any mishap with the healing phrase “no worries.” Of course they’re not all perfect: There are unpleasant taxi drivers in every major city! But Australians often seem so comfortable in their own skins, so content with their fortunate lot in life, that they lend a deep sense of well-being to their visitors.

Fiji—The World’s Friendliest People

Once upon a time, for a country intent on developing a tour-ist industry, the Fijians had a serious image problem. Before their archipelago became known as Fiji, it was marked on European maps as the “Cannibal Isles.” Indeed, explorers and travelers went to considerable lengths to steer well clear of the place and its legendarily ferocious inhabitants. Quite what happened to the Fijian collective psyche is unclear, but a conversion took place of positively Pauline completeness. Today, there are no friendlier, more hospitable people on earth than the Fijians. They do have a few family problems—the native Melanesians don’t always get along too well with their fellow countrymen of Indian origin—but for American visitors the smiles begin at the airport and continue indefi-nitely, undimmed. Which in today’s troubled world comes as a very pleasant and welcome surprise. H

A msterdam is a

unique city. It has

everything that a

‘big city’ has to offer, yet it has a

very intimate feel. The beautiful

scenes of the canals and the

canal houses give the idea of a

small city,” says Eef Sparla, head

concierge at Hotel de l’Europe.

Robbert van Rijsbergen, sales

executive with Intercontinental

Amstel Amsterdam, agrees,

and adds: “I would say that

Amsterdam is special due to

its architecture and being built

on water, as well as its very rich

collection of art.” Van Rijsbergen

notes that Amsterdam is a

very accessible city: “With

only 800,000 residents, you

can basically walk or bike

anywhere fairly easily.”

While some people may

think of Amsterdam as just its

infamous Red Light District and

“coffeeshops,” Amsterdam is a

vibrant city with an incredibly

rich history and an extraordinary

architectural heritage, say Andrew

Harper Travel Office consultants.

Its canal-laced, pedestrian-

friendly old center is ideal for

aimless strolls and exploring.

Both Sparla and van

Rijsbergen are quick to

note that most Amsterdam

residents speak English, have

Rent a bike.“Act like the city is yours,” says Sparla, “and ring your bell a lot.”

Spend the day at Vondelpark. The city’s largest park, with 120 acres, was opened in 1865 and is named after Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel.

Stroll through the Jordaan neighborhood. This area may not have many canals, but its low-key atmosphere, compact houses, charming restau-rants and bars, and quirky shops make it popular with the locals.

Explore the Albert Cuyp Street Market.Van Rijsbergen and van Eijsden both recommend this market, which originally opened in 1905. Today, more than 250 stands offer fruits and vegetables, fish, flow-ers, clothes, jewelry and more.

Tour the canals.Spend a day on the canals in a sloep (open boat) with a bottle of wine.

There are 1,281 bridges

in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam has almost as

PROVENCE, FRANCE – Nestled on the hillside and drenched

in Provençal sunshine, the Minimes convent was first home to

nuns before being converted into an upscale hotel. Protected

from the Mistral wind by

the Volx Rock, this build-

ing, dating back to 1613,

is a successful fusion of

medieval architecture

and contemporary

design. Period facades,

terraced gardens with

hundreds of botanical

species, and contempo-

rary interior décor are

combined in a perfect

alchemy. The rooms,

decorated with great

attention to detail, incorporate subtle Mediterranean influ-

ences, as does the Couvent des Minimes Spa by L’Occitane,

a temple to wellness and a promise of “renewed well-being.”

Recommended since 2008.

SPECIAL OFFER: The Time Stops in Provence…With an Additional Complimentary Night Extend your stay and receive an additional complimentary night when reserving a two- or three-night stay. also includes Harper member benefits and any standard rate inclusions. dates Offer is valid on new reservations only, for a Restanque Room, Junior Suite or Suite, for travel between Aug. 15 and Oct. 31, 2012, based on availability. Reservations must be confirmed 72 hours before arrival date. Offer is not combinable with any other promotions, and restrictions may apply.

Andrew Harper members receive: preferred rates; an up-grade, when available at time of booking; daily buffet breakfast served at the restaurant or in room; a welcome L’Occitane amenity per room; a daily relaxation experience for two at the spa; and for stays of three nights or longer, a luncheon for two at Bancaou Restaurant (excludes beverages, taxes and gratuities).

Standard rate inclusions: taxes.

Le Couvent des MinimesInterContinental Amstel AmsterdamAMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS – Centrally located on

the Amstel River and within walking distance of many attrac-

tions, this hotel has been celebrated as the grandest in the

Netherlands since opening

in 1867. The grace and

elegance of a European

estate extends throughout

55 executive rooms and 24

suites, all with state-of-the-

art amenities and spacious

marble bathrooms.

The Michelin-starred

Restaurant La Rive offers

French-Mediterranean culinary delights and an extensive wine

list. The Amstel Bar & Brasserie excels in intimate, informal al

fresco dining. And stunning river views accent the afternoon

tea served daily in the Amstel Lounge.

Relax and recharge in the fully equipped health club, book

one of three authentic canal boats, or branch out with a

full-day excursion to Floriade 2012, a spectacular once-in-

a-decade flower show. Recommended since 1982.

Andrew Harper members receive: preferred rates; an upgrade, when available on check-in; daily continental breakfast served at the restaurant or in room; a VIP welcome amenity and bottle of wine; fruit platter; 4 p.m. late checkout, when available; and for stays of three nights or longer, a ticket to the Hermitage Museum per person.

RijksmuseumThe Dutch national museum focuses on art from the country’s Golden Age. The collection of beautifully silent Vermeer paintings and darkly dramatic Rembrandts is unparalleled.

Stedelijk MuseumA must for contemporary art buffs.

Scheepvaart-museum National Maritime Museum—Explore the ways in which the Dutch

culture has been shaped by the sea.

Ons’ Lieve heer op Solder Our Lord in the Attic—Because Amsterdam was a resolutely Protes-tant city, Catholics couldn’t worship in the open. A wealthy Catholic merchant converted the top three floors of a canal house into this impressively large, secret church.

Joods Historisch MuseumJewish Historical Museum—Sparla recommends this museum, with col-lections that illuminate Dutch Jewish life. Within the museum, you’ll find the Jewish Historical Children’s Museum, which is dedicated to Jew-ish life from a child’s perspective.

Hermitage AmsterdamContains a rich collection of Rus-sian art and masterpieces of Van Gogh, according to van Rijsbergen.

Science Center NEMO“This self-explore museum is great for children, as you can do all kinds of activities yourself and explore how everyday things work,” says Andrew Gallagher of Abercrombie & Kent Europe.

Katten Kabinet“Cat Cabinet”—Boasts a fun collection of art showing the world through cats’ eyes.
