Journeys to Success:
Equity and Access for All Students
Overview - Share Your Expertise:
The National Partnership for Educational Access (NPEA) is seeking exceptional workshop presenters for our 9th
annual NPEA Conference and invites you to submit a workshop proposal for consideration. Featuring more than 30
workshops, three keynotes, two receptions, and ample time for networking, this is a valuable opportunity for those in
the field of education access to come together and share best practices for supporting underrepresented students on the
path to and through college. The conference will be held April 5-7, 2017 at the Hyatt Regency Cambridge, Overlooking
Boston.
Presenting at the NPEA Conference is a unique opportunity to showcase your best practices and expertise to a national
audience of educators, including nonprofits, schools, and colleges, who are all committed to increasing access and
success for underrepresented students across the country. Each year, we receive more proposals than we have space
available in our agenda. Each proposal is carefully considered and discussed with a committee of reviewers, and
sessions are selected according to several criteria and with an eye towards creating a robust, diverse conference agenda
that will appeal to the range of participants who attend.
PLEASE NOTE: We are pleased to offer all accepted presenters a reduced registration fee of $475 to attend the full
conference. Unfortunately, NPEA is unable to reimburse for travel, provide speaker honorariums, or offer
complimentary conference registrations for presenters. Please submit your workshop proposal with the understanding
that you and any co-presenters will be required to pay this presenter fee, and discuss this with all presenters included
in your proposal. Thank you!
Questions? Please email Carrie.
1. Proposal Guidelines: Overview, Description, and Expectations
2017 NPEA Conference: Workshop Proposal Application
1
Conference Theme and Description:
Underrepresented students often navigate an educational path filled with opportunities and challenges, transitions and
choices. From pre-K through middle school, to high school, college, and beyond, their journeys are not the same;
instead, their varied experiences shed light on the many factors that shape a student’s story, illustrating how success
looks different from one student to the next, and providing insights for how we, as professionals, can contribute to the
lives and successes of the students with whom we work.
NPEA’s 9th annual conference will focus on the many experiences that merge to create a student’s educational journey
and address best practices for meeting the individual and collective needs of underrepresented students and their
families. We will explore and share effective strategies around academic preparation for middle- and high-achieving
students, social-emotional learning, financial planning and college affordability, family and community engagement,
career readiness, and more. Through discussions about current trends, policies, and research in the field, as well as
innovative models and approaches, a range of experts will present tools and ideas to help us support and improve
positive student outcomes for all underrepresented students. We will also consider how to ensure organizational
sustainability, position ourselves for growth, attract and retain high-quality staff, manage and use data effectively, and
form strategic partnerships that will further our mission and goals. Finally, we will reflect on our own journeys as we
support underrepresented students through theirs.
2
The NPEA conference is known for workshops that present relevant and timely information with practical application.
Workshops provide attendees with tangible tools and best practices they can bring back to their organizations and
schools that will improve programming and services. Workshops that promote a product or simply describe a program
model absent a broader context will not be considered.
Proposals will be reviewed by members of the 2017 Conference Planning Committee. The committee will consider the
following:
Relevance: Is the topic highly relevant to the educational access field, the conference theme, and our audience?
Clarity: Does the description give a clear, concise picture of what the presentation will include?
Objectives: Are the objectives clear and can they be met realistically in the time allowed?
Practicality: Will the workshop present practical "how to" information or substantiated research findings?
Delivery: Do proposed presentation delivery methods employ effective techniques for adult learning?
Engagement: Does the presentation provide sufficient opportunities for audience engagement and Q&A?
Applicability: Can the workshop information be applied in a variety of programs and settings?
Completion: Is the proposal well-written and complete? Does it demonstrate correct spelling and grammar, and
are all questions answered completely?
2. Workshop and Presenter Expectations
2017 NPEA Conference: Workshop Proposal Application
3
The NPEA conference offers sessions on a range of topics addressing the needs and interests of our diverse audience.
We encourage proposals that are focused on best practices and current research on serving underrepresented students,
while remaining relevant to the conference theme of supporting all underrepresented students from pre-K through
college, recognizing their unique experiences on the path to and through college and beyond, and exploring the many
factors and experiences that contribute to students’ journeys.
NPEA is interested in hearing varying perspectives from all those representing the educational access and success field,
including school- and non-school-based direct service programs; independent, public, and charter schools; colleges and
universities; other education nonprofits; funders; and more.
There are two options for proposal submissions:
1. Workshop Sessions: Conference workshop sessions are interactive and engaging, offer best practices that can be
applied when attendees return home, and often include multiple presenters representing different organizations,
schools, and/or institutions. These sessions are 75 minutes.
2. Learning Exchange Roundtables: Learning exchange roundtable sessions provide an opportunity to engage in
conversations led by expert presenters on critical topics facing the education access field. Presenters will outline
a topic and provide brief context for conversation, prepare several questions, and then lead discussion with
attendees. These sessions are 45 minutes.
We will have approximately 30 available workshop session slots and 8 learning exchange roundtables in the conference
agenda.
