Dear Bryn Mawr Alumnae/i, Family and Friends,
We invite you to join us on an exclusive small group journey of captivating Great Britain. From Edinburgh and Snowdonia to Bath and London, our small group will enjoy the many charms of timeless England, Scotland, and Wales.
We begin in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, touring the 18th-century “New Town” and me-dieval “Old Town,” and the Royal Mile. We then travel to the beautiful Lake District, stopping to visit Dove Cottage and Hill Top, and we enjoy an afternoon boat ride on Lake Windermere. From here, we travel to Wales, unspoiled Snowdonia National Park, and Stratford-upon-Avon, visiting Shakespeare’s Birthplace and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage & Gardens. In Bath, we tour the historic Roman Baths, before traveling on to see enigmatic Stonehenge and Windsor Castle. We end our tour in wondrous London, where we tour celebrated landmarks such as the Tower of London, Big Ben, and Buckingham Palace. An optional 3-day/2-night post-tour extension in London is also available for those who would like to extend their stay in this world capital.
Space on this exclusive, air-inclusive tour for Bryn Mawr is limited to just 24 guests, and will be accompanied by Jane Hedley and Steve Salkever. Jane and Steve are looking forward to exploring the British Isles with you. We anticipate that space will fill quickly; your early reservations are encouraged.
Warm regards,
Saskia Subramanian ’88 President, Bryn Mawr College Alumnae Association

Day 1: Depart U.S. for Edinburgh, Scotland
Day 2: Arrive Edinburgh We arrive in the Scottish capital and transfer to our hotel. As guests’ arrival times may vary greatly, we have no group activities planned during the day; though our tour director will lead an orientation walking tour of the neighborhood surrounding our hotel late this morning. Later we meet for a briefing about the journey ahead; tonight we gather for a welcome dinner. D
Day 3: Edinburgh Our morning tour of this stately city built on seven hills includes the 18th- century “New Town” and the medieval “Old Town,” where we visit Edinburgh Castle, symbolic heart of Scotland. This afternoon is at leisure to dis- cover Edinburgh as we wish; museums, galleries, and shops abound. Dinner tonight is on our own, and Edinburgh boasts a robust culinary scene. B
Day 4: Edinburgh This morning we encounter the Royal Mile, the historic boulevard connecting Edinburgh Castle with the Palace of Holyrood House. We tour Holyrood, as it is called, and see where British royalty schemed and slept as we tour the State Apartments. After lunch at a local restaur- ant, the remainder of the day is free for independent exploration and dinner on our own. B,L
Day 5: Edinburgh/Lake District Departing Edinburgh this morning, we’re bound for the beautiful – and beloved – Lake District of north-west England, a national park and diverse landscape of lakes, rivers, ancient woodlands, and small towns and villages. On arrival we stop at Dove Cottage, where English Romantic poet William Wordsworth penned some of his most memorable lines. Late afternoon we reach our hotel on the shores of Lake Windermere; we dine tonight at our hotel. B,L,D
Day 6: Lake District Today’s excursion begins with a visit to Hill Top, the 17th-century farmhouse and garden that author Beatrix Potter purchased
Tour membership limited to 24 alumnae/i and friends of Bryn Mawr College

with the proceeds from her The Tale of Peter Rabbit. After time for lunch on our own in charming Ambleside, we take an afternoon boat ride on Windermere, England’s largest lake. B,D
Day 7: Lake District/North Wales Traveling through splendid Lake District scenery today en route to Wales, we stop at Levens Hall to see the world’s oldest topiary garden, little changed from its origins in the 1690s. From here we travel on to Wales and our hotel, where we dine tonight. B,D
Day 8: North Wales/Snowdonia National Park This morning we visit 13th-century Caernarfon Castle, a medieval fortress whose brute appearance symbolized English domination over the Welsh. Known as the “land of castles” and the “land of song,” Wales is also a land of fierce natural beauty, as we see for ourselves during this afternoon’s visit to Snowdonia National Park. Named for Snowdon, at 3,560 feet the tallest mountain in England and Wales, the park comprises some 840 square miles of unspoiled wooded valleys, mountains, moor-lands, lakes, and rivers. Late afternoon we return to our hotel, where we dine tonight. B,L,D
Day 9: North Wales/Stratford-upon-Avon/Bath Returning to England today, we visit Stratford-upon-Avon, where our touring includes a visit to Shakespeare’s Birthplace, a restored 16th-century half-timbered house where the Bard is believed to have been born in 1564. We also tour Anne Hathaway’s Cottage & Gardens, the thatched farm- house of Shakespeare’s bride that still contains some original furnishings. Then we have time in this 800-year-old market town for lunch on our own and to explore independently before we continue on to Bath. We reach our hotel late this after-noon and dine there tonight. B,D
Day 10: Bath We set out on a morning tour of this storied and graceful city where the ancient Romans first “took the waters” at England’s only hot springs. Today the historic Roman Baths count among the city’s most popular sites, along with Bath Abbey, the 18th-century Assembly Room, The Circus, and Royal Crescent, all of which we see on our tour. The afternoon is free to explore as we wish. From the Jane Austen Centre to the Costume Museum, and from charming tearooms to stately Georgian architecture, Bath offers a bounty of worthy sites and attractions. B
Day 11: Bath/The Cotswolds Today we encounter the Cotswolds, England’s south central region of gently rolling hills dotted with villages of honey-colored limestone, market towns, and unspoiled countryside, looking much as it did 300 years ago. We return to Bath and our hotel mid-afternoon, with the remainder of the day and this evening at leisure. B,L

Day 12: Bath/London We leave our pastoral days behind as we travel today to London, stop-ping en route to see Stonehenge, the 4,500-year-old Neolithic monument that remains something of a mystery today. That the prehistoric circle of stones is a masterpiece of engineering and build-ing is undisputed; exactly why it was created is less certain. Next we visit Windsor, site of British royalty’s Windsor Castle, where we have free time to explore on our own before we continue on to London, arriving late this afternoon. B
Day 13: London A panoramic city tour this morning passes such celebrated London land-marks as the infamous Tower of London, grand Parliament and Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, and Hyde Park. Our after-noon is at leisure to explore this wondrous city as we wish; theater, museums, parks, a boat ride on the Thames – London offers an embarrassment of riches from which to choose. Tonight we cel-ebrate our journey through Britain at a farewell dinner at a local restaurant. B,D
Day 14: Depart for U.S. We transfer this morning to Heathrow airport for our flights home. B

Bryn Mawr Faculty HostsJane Hedley and Steve Salkever have both taught at Bryn Mawr for many years, he in Political Science and she in English. Jane did her graduate work at Bryn Mawr, and joined the faculty dur-
ing the 1970s. Renaissance literature was her field of scholarship for many years; her first book, Power in Verse, focuses on lyric poetry of the sixteenth and early seventeenth cen-turies. She has continued to teach and write about Renaissance literature, but has moved into projects involving modern and contempo-rary poetry as well. Steve, who is retired and teaches part-time at Bryn Mawr, completed his undergraduate studies at Amherst and then went on to the University of Chicago. Steve’s book on Aristotle, Finding the Mean, brings ancient Greek philosophy into dialogue with modern political thought. He has also published on Plato, and on intersections and possibilities for dialogue between Greece and China, Plato and Confucius.
