USS ENTERPRISE, At Sea – As the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) continues its operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility March 21, one group of Sailors are living beyond the steel confines of the ship by escaping to new worlds of their own creation through the art of creative writing. Like many other children at the time, nine-year-old Michael D. McClain delved into unchartered worlds and met new, interesting characters by playing video games. But he was always upset by the finality of the games—having to say goodbye to the characters with whom he had shared dozens of hours of adventure. So one night, the young McClain sat down at his desk with paper and pencil and created his own world. “I wrote my own stories to continue the types of adventures I’d experienced while playing those games,” said Michael D. McClain, now Information Systems Technician Seaman McClain. “That was the first time I pulled adventure out of paper, and I have continued to do so throughout my entire

life.”Sailors and Marines aboard Enterprise can now join McClain between working hours on deployment as a member of the Creative Writing Club that meets every Sunday from 1400-1600. “The club is a place for Sailors to gather and draw from each others’ writing experience,” said McClain. “Each sailor is encouraged to start a project of their own and develop it throughout the deployment.” For McClain, who studied video game art and design at the Art Institute of Atlanta, forming the club gave him an opportunity to bring Sailors together to collaborate and help each other through the writing process. “The idea is that it’s far easier to write and continue writing when you have people in similar situations supporting you,” he said. The Creative Writing Club is one of numerous events and organizations held aboard Enterprise that allow Sailors to express themselves creatively. “I was actually inspired to start the club when I stumbled across [Electronics

Technician 1st Class Jennifer] Rhoads’ art class,” McClain said. “I found it so refreshing to express myself creatively while working aboard the ship that I decided I’d like to create a similar experience.” Rhoads joined the Creative Writing Club last Sunday to broaden her creative horizons. “I want to learn how to be able to adapt my art to a variety of situations, whether it be animation, graphic novels, comic books, video games, or simply illustration,” said Rhoads. “To do so, I need to have a solid understanding in the basis behind creative writing.” Participants use the

combined knowledge of the club’s members to enhance their writing skills and draw inspiration while sharing their work. “I think it provides an avenue that encourages Sailors and Marines to be creative and to learn,” said Rhoads. “This is especially important during deployment and helps as a stress relief. Also, you have the chance to make some new friends along the way.” McClain hopes to get Enterprise crew members to make writing a larger part of their deployment. “I’m a firm believer that expressing oneself creatively is a large part of maintaining one’s own well being,” said McClain.

Sailors of the DayLogistics Specialist SeamanAris Fletcher - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

LSSN Fletcher, a storeroom custodian assigned to Supply’s S-8 division, joined the Navy two years ago to better himself, gain valuable experience, see the world and provide for his family. To Fletcher, the most rewarding aspect of his job is “being able to be part of a team and seeing how together we can provide results that help to successfully achieve the readiness of the ship.” Fletcher is working hard to make E-4 and obtain his ESWS and EAWS pins. Personally, Fletcher would like to one day become the UFC Lightweight Champion and raise a family with his wife. Fletcher enjoys spending time with his family, working out and playing with his dog Sonny.

AT3 Zeider, a plane captain assigned to the “Red Rippers” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 11, joined the Navy four years ago for the unique opportunities it offered. To Zeider, the most rewarding aspect of his job is being deployed because “I am able to see places and do things that no one else ever will.” Zeider plans to re-enlist, earn his EAWS qualification and make E-5 in the near future. During his free time, Zeider enjoys reading, studying and relaxing.
