Benevolence Farm | Design+BuildThis 10-week design+build summer studio focused on a barn/pavilion for women who are transitioning out of prison through a non-profit organization, Benevolence Farm. Eighteen students worked together to form a concept of a functional barn to have the ability to clean, wash and store vegetables. My main responsibility included site preparation, foundation, and roof installation.

Center for Creative TechnologiesThe Center for Creative Technologies was intended to be an anchor for the center of downtown Durham. It was designed to have large multi-purpose rooms, work-shop spaces, interactive classrooms, digital projection rooms and small collaborative rooms. Leasable spaces to be rented for offices and retail use were also intended. Using the building as a learning tool, I exposed the mechanical systems andstructure to show the tectonics of the building inside and out.

Wolfpoint, Chicago SkyscraperThe connection between nature and civilization fueled my concept for a skyscraper in Chicago. The program was designed to be a flexible mixed-use space and incorporate the main focus of supporting all aspects of the arts. My aspirations were to break the gap between upper and lower society by connecting them through the arts as well as use Alvar Aalto as a precedent.

Wright Brothers Memorial MuseumThis project was derived from the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, NC. We were given the challenge to design a museum to showcase the history of the Wright Brothers as well as the history of flight, up until the 1960’s, which included displaying 20 planes through-out the space. Site & structural analysis, material exploration, sunlight evaluation, human scale and sustainable resources were all developed and focused on throughout the semester.

Brion-Vega MuseumAn in-depth site analysis of the Brion-Vega Cemetery led this project to design a new built form within the site. This museum would provide office space, interior & exterior gathering areas, and an exhibition space of Carlo Scarpa’s work. The concept was driven by compression and releasing of spaces to create thresholds that guide one through the building.

Come Sit a SpellDaniel Stowe Botanical Garden, located in Belmont, North Caro-lina, held a competition that showcased a collection of creative versions of seating. Being one out of twelve entries from UNCG, this bench was designed to be an oversized piece, giving the sense of feeling like a child, allowing one’s feet to dangle in the air. It is made of cypress, concrete, rebar and steel plates, weighing over 1,000 pounds.

My Sister Susan’s House | Design+BuildThis is the second installment of urban studio, a design+build studio within the Interior Architecture program at UNCG, directed by Robert Charest, as-sociate professor. This community oriented effort, My Sister Susan’s House is a 5,000 square foot facility housing up to five pregnant teenage mothers and their children.

My role during this project varied throughout the con-struction process:Independent Study, Fall 2008 | Worked on various tasks to prepare for the upcoming construction process; helped build the model, set up the woodshop, and build and lay out the footings. Studio Member, Spring 2009 | Integral leader of a 17 member studio team responsible for building the exterior wall structure with insulated concrete forms, installing the rafters, drying in the building, and the pouring of the concrete floor.Intern, Summer 2009|Worked as a project team leader, helping to coordinate 15+ students with construction responsibilities to complete Phase II of the project. Also worked with three other interns to install the standing seam metal roof for the house.Intern, Fall 2009-Spring 2010 | Continued to work on the project with three other interns focusing on interior fin-ish work such as painting walls, installing all cabinetry, and pouring the concrete/wheatboard countertops. At the open house in February, I was recognized by my profes-sor, Robert Charest as the MVP of the project for going above and beyond normal efforts throughout all phases of this construction process.

Repurposed an existing vacant building in downtown Greensboro and focused on the design of both exterior and interiors and developed it into a modern art muse-um. Keeping the shell of the building and adding more square footage to the already existing 40,000 square feet helped emphasize my grand gesture, ascension. Space planning the entire building as well as detailing three areas of choice were prerequisites for this project. I focused on the lobby, a gallery space and the eatery in this modern museum.

This project focused on developing an existing mill community into an adaptive mixed-use space located in High Point, North Carolina. In teams of three, we worked together to redesign, renovate and revive this mill and provide it with modern features and functions. Within this 300,000 square foot building, we detailed a restaurant, office area, gallery space and residential town homes.

30+2 | Design+BuildThis design+build project developed over a three-week period, consisted of developing, designing, and constructing a 32 square foot modern dwelling to be showcased on UNCG’s campus. As a member of a 25-person team, I focused on model making, pre fabrication as well as on-site construction.
