Project: Apple Campus 2Office: Foster+PartnersDuration: 2010 to PresentStatus: Construction Documents

Project Description:

Located on 176 acres in Cupertino, California, across town from the existing campus, Infinite Loop, Apple Campus 2 will accomodate 12,000 employees over 2.8 million square feet of office space in one ‘Main Building’ [1]. The intention for this is to foster invention and collaboration.

Other amenities on site include a restaurant [2] within the Main Building, a separate Corporate Fitness Center [3] comprising approximately 100,000 square feet, and a 1,000-seat Cor-porate Auditorium [4]. Supporting structures include a 9,000 space parking structure [5] as well as a central plant [6]. Ad-ditional office and laboratory space [7] for 2,500 employees is earmarked for a second phase.

Through the use of a robust energy strategy, including photo-voltaic roof panels and hydrogen fuel cells, the project will be energy net zero. The landscap plan call for 6,000 new trees to be brought to site, including apricot and apple trees located in orchards in the courtyard of the Main Building.

Role:

Three years into design Joshua’s involvement has varied as the needs of the project have changed. In London, he was involved in the design of Main Building Entrances. After relo-cating to California he has been overseeing the prototype of the Main Building, as well as helping to produce the planning set and coordinating various mockups.

Project: Annette Straus Artist SquareOffice: Foster+PartnersDuration: 2008 to 2010Status: Complete

Project Description:

The AT&T Performing Arts Center’s outdoor performance venue is named for the late former mayor of Dallas, Annette Strauss. Located adjacent to the Elaine D. and Charles A. Sammons Park, Annette Strauss Square provides a serene setting for outdoor performances, festivals and events.

The primary features of the venue include the large perfor-mance lawn, the Shannon and Ted Skokos Pavilion and the Performance Plaza. The exterior of the Skokos Pavilion is clad in diamond-shaped panels arranged in a random mixture of silver anodized aluminum and brushed zinc finishes. This mixture of finishes heightens the play of light reflecting on the building during day and evening. The front of the stage house incorporates roller shutter doors, which retract to allow large speaker arrays to project out of the stage house during per-formances and then return to their protected enclosure when not in use. Concrete site walls border the performance lawn to ensure patrons are not distracted by nearby traffic noise and allow a natural barrier for ticketed events.

The space is open to the public when not being utilized for pri-vate events so that visitors may enjoy the setting. The entire venue will accomodate up to 2,400 visitors for a single event.

20,000 sf / 1,860 sq m

As part of DC Public Library’s Building Program, the new Shaw Library is one in a series of new libraries designed to meet the current and future needs of the community. Situated on a triangular urban site near Howard University, the new library marks this important intersection as a civic and educational resource for the community. The building’s three levels house materials for the adult and children’s collections with online catalogs providing access to the DC Public Library electronic resources available at all locations. Community resources in-clude a multi-purpose room, 32 public computers, two 10-per-son conference rooms and individual study rooms.Sustainable design measures enhance the library’s energy performance and include a vegetative green roof, displace-ment air system, solar control and daylight management and extensive use of recyclable and renewable materials. A shad-ing system involving a corrugated, perforated aluminum screen wall across the building’s southern façade allows a reduced dependence on artificial lighting and protects the library’s col-lection from harmful solar exposure.
