O R I G I N A L C R E A T I V E T E A MAndrew Lloyd Webber (Music) is the composer of The Likes of Us, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat®, Jesus Christ Superstar, By Jeeves, Evita, Variations and Te" Me On A Sunday later combined as Song & Dance, Cats, Starlight Express, The Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love, Sunset Boulevard, Whistle Down the Wind, The Beautiful Game, The Woman in White and Love Never Dies, a sequel to Phantom. He composed the film scores of Gumshoe and The Odessa File, and a setting of the Latin Requiem Mass Requiem.

He pioneered television casting for musical theatre with the Emmy award-winning BBC series How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? He repeated his success with Any Dream Wi" Do which cast the title role of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and I’d Do Anything which cast the roles of Nancy and Oliver for Oliver! In the 2010 BBC series Over The Rainbow, he cast the role of Dorothy for his new production of The Wizard of Oz which opened at the London Palladium in March of 2011.

His awards include seven Tonys, three Grammys including Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Requiem, seven Oliviers, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, two International Emmys, the Praemium Imperiale, the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre and The Kennedy Center Honor.

He currently owns seven London theatres including the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and the London Palladium. He was knighted in 1992 and created an honorary life peer in 1997. In October 2011, his production of The Phantom of the Opera celebrated its 25th Anniversary with two special performances at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Tim Rice (Lyrics) was born in 1944. He began songwriting in 1965 and met fellow budding songwriter Andrew Lloyd Webber whose musical ambitions were in theatre rather than rock or pop. They teamed up and wrote four musicals together from 1965 to 1978. The first, The Likes of Us (1965-66), was performed for the first time in 2005 and became available on CD just 40 years after its creation. The other three, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1968), Jesus Christ Superstar (1969-71) and Evita (1976-78) were more immediate successes.

Feeling certain that they could never top this lot, the pair went their separate ways in the early 1980s, whereupon ALW immediately topped that lot with Cats. In1986, Rice wrote Chess, in collaboration with ABBA's Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. Chess had a healthy run in the West End but flopped on Broadway in 1988. In the 1990s, he worked primarily and happily with the Disney empire, contributing lyrics to the movies Aladdin (music Alan Menken) and The Lion King (music Elton John and Hans Zimmer) and to the stage shows Beauty and the Beast (Alan Menken), The Lion King and Aida (both Sir Elton).

He is currently reworking an operatic musical he has written with Alan Menken (King David), and on new treatments, for both stage and screen, of Chess, the New York Times bloke having been replaced. He lives in London, Cornwall and on the motorway between the two, has three children, his own cricket team and a knighthood.

Message from

Br. Domenic Viggiani, FSCPresident, De La Salle College “Oaklands”

Theatrical and musical productions are very much part of a long and well-respected tradition at De La Salle College "Oaklands".

In 1960, under the direction of Brother Walter, the student body put on Oaklahoma. The Toronto Star reviewed it in these terms: "The hardest thing to keep in mind is that it is a high school performance. The quality is consistently far beyond what might be expected, better, in fact, than any university musicals."

In 1962, the famous Broadway producer and director, Richard Rogers attended the school's production of Carousel. The iconic Brother Gabriel, responsible for the inclusion of the school auditorium at the time of the construction of the main building, directed plays across the city as early as the 1920's, often to packed crowds at Massey Hall.

This year's production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" continues in this long tradition. I wish to congratulate the director, Mr. Michael Luchka and the entire cast for their determination and hard-work. I am most appreciative of their efforts.

Thank you also to the many parents who have generously assisted with making this musical possible. In a time when our young are exposed to so much of what is vulgar and crass, we do well to pass on an appreciation for good theatre and the commitment required to produce it.

The prospect of breathing new life into Theatre De La Salle’s sixty-year legacy was first discussed two years ago, behind closed doors, by a handful of interested staff members. At that time, initial plans were presented to stage “Joseph” and the preproduction wheels were put into motion. It soon became evident, however, that we just weren’t ready to proceed with a full-scale musical production. Not yet. A lot of work needed to be done to the physical space of the auditorium before a creative team could gather and bring theatre back to life on her stage. Thanks to the support and dedication of Br. Domenic, Mr. Pupo, the Board of Directors, and the unparalleled generosity of the Parent’s Association and the wider De La Salle community, funds were raised at the 2011 Gala to begin work on reviving Theatre De La Salle and establishing a firm foundation for future theatrical productions.

As you can imagine, a show of this scale requires an incredible commitment of time and energy, and a deeply-rooted passion for theatre and the performing arts. Rehearsals began last October; our final rehearsal took place this past Wednesday before an audience of local elementary school children. While you will witness the fruits of our labour when our cast members take to the stage, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge those who laughed, cried, raised their voices, worried a little, and celebrated right along with me during each step of the creative process. Many individuals are listed in this program to whom we extend our deepest gratitude for the varying degrees of support they have provided. But I would like to specifically acknowledge my colleagues and collaborators - Ms. Laura Wood and Mrs. Marlene McGroarty - for the hours of time they dedicated, the endless ideas they generated, and the ongoing support and encouragement they provided me and the members of our cast. There were times when our triad had its doubts about the ultimate realization of this show as we tried to juggle cast members’ schedules, technical shortcomings, and other school-related priorities. In many ways, it’s a little miracle that this production even materialized.

A special and much-deserved nod also goes to Mr. Norman Lue Tam, Ms. Anne Hogan, and Mr. Jerry McGroarty for all their leadership in designing and constructing our beautiful set and prop pieces. With the assistance of their Visual and Media Arts students, they brought the world of ancient Egypt to life with aplomb. And to our guest choreographer Tricia Cleyn and our visiting musicians, RJ, Chris, Etienne, Kishan, and Tyler under the musical leadership of Jordann Zaza, for putting the “mojo” in our “JO!”

Although we are nowhere near the scope of a Broadway musical, I wanted to instill in our cast members a deep respect for the acting profession and an appreciation of what it means to be part of an ensemble. To that end, cast members were treated as professionals: they signed contracts after successfully auditioning for a part in the show; they were held accountable for their behaviour, for missed rehearsals, and for learning their lines and choreography. In short, I wanted them to take their involvement seriously, and still have a fun time with it. I think we have succeeded in achieving both these aims. I am so proud of all of them. They are the reason I enjoy doing what I do.

Tonight, it is with no hesitation that I proudly dedicate this performance to each and every cast and crew member and their families who have brought this production to life through song, dance, performance, design, construction, and promotion, and have truly come to realize that, indeed, to make something like this happen, “any dream will do.”
