Jordan Pennycook Blossom Tree Nursery MA Childcare
Modern apprenticeships do not adhere to traditional gender stereotypes in the workplace and
Jordan Pennycook is a prime example of this. 18 year old Jordan had two very different career paths
in mind when joined Ways to Work at West Lothian College in September 2016. Having left school in
2015 being made redundant from his previous place of work in 2016 Jordan had decided that he
wanted to pursue a career in either mechanics or childcare. Jordan’s Mother is a childminder and he
often helped her out during school holidays. It was clear that although Jordan was interested in
mechanics his biggest passion lay in childcare and so he completed his placement in a nursery.
Jordan began his Modern Apprenticeship in Childcare in February 2017 working in while he
continues his vocational studies. Jordan loves working in the nursery as he is learning but in a fun
environment and although the children were a bit sceptical as to why he was there at first, he seems
to have won them over as they are now very comfortable around him!
“I really enjoy working at Blossom Tree Nursery” said Jordan “Every day I come into work ready to
learn new things and I’m hoping that I’ll become a fully qualified practitioner.”
Jordan’s Employer Kimberley Abrahams said: “We are very excited having a male in a female
dominated area. Jordan is working well and it is evident as the children become more accepting of
Jordan he has grown in confidence”
