History of the Peninsular Kingdoms (22249) 3 trimestre 2013-2014
GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR THE FINAL EXAM
(N.B.: These are general guidelines only. More specific instructions will be available in
the text of the final examination, which will be posted this week on the Aula Global.
The examination is due on Friday June 20 by 12.00 in my office or my mailbox. Exams
sent via email WITHOUT an accompanying hard copy will not be accepted and
will be recorded as not received , no presentado).
1. General
i) Please write your examination in a WORD document using size 12 font, 1.5 space.
ii) Read over the exam questions carefully before answering any of the questions. Notethat in some cases you will be given a choice of questions to answer. DO NOT answer
all the questions in those cases.
iii) Try to be as specific as possible when answering questions or identifying persons,
events, or themes. Vague and excessively general answers will NOT receive full credit.
You will need to use specific material from ALL the readings posted on the Aula Global,
the lecture notes, as well as any relevant additional resources, such as those listed in
the attached list of library and web resources.
iv) Cite ALL texts and materials consulted either in footnotes, endnotes, or internal
references. For details, see the section, References and citations, below.
2. Format
The final examination has three parts. Part Awill consist of the briefidentification of
persons, groups, concepts, or events :
Although your answers should be brief, they should be as complete and specific
as possible. For instance, if asked to identify El Cid you should include his full name,
the meaning of his nick-name, El Cid, hisdates of birth and death; the place and
period in which he lived (Castile, reign of Alfonso VI; taifa kingdoms of al-Andalus);
major achievements (conquest of Valencia, including dates); hero of the epic poem, El
poema del mio Cid; and his historical relevance or significance(e.g., within the
context of the so-called Reconquista, as an example of the relations between Christian
and Muslim powers during the taifa period, etc.). Maximum length of Part A: three
pages.
3. Parts B and C: Essay questions:
You will be given a choice of two essay questions for each section. Answer ONEessay
question from eachsection. Each essay should be maximum three pages long. You

may use an additional page for endnotes or a bibliography. You will need to use all the
material from this course (obligatory or recommended primary documents, obligatory
and recommended secondary sources and web resources) as well as the lecture notes.
Each essay question will revolve around the central themes in the course. Review the
course syllabus, the topics presented in the Aula Global, and the powerpoint lecture
notes for an overview of the themes covered in class. Also review the discussion or
reflection questions that I placed on the Aula Global for many of the assigned readings.
Since the essay questions will involve the analysis or the use of at least one primary
source text, you should also follow the general guidelines given for your work on the
second seminar. Hence, when dealing with a primary source text you should identify the
author (if known), the date, the literary genre (chronicle, poem, legal treatise, etc.), the
content (key ideas, themes, events or people described, etc.); historical context
(including the relevant historical period, Iberian kingdom(s), major political, religious,
cultural, social, or military circumstances); original language and discourse of the text(how the author expresses him/herself to convey his/her ideas); ideology of the text (e.g.,
how it relates to the themes of convivencia, conflict, tolerance, etc.),
Some of the general themes covered in the class include the following:
The historiographic debate over convivencia, convenience, tolerance / intolerance as a
model for understanding the history of the Iberian Kingdoms
The changing status of religious minorities in Muslim and Christian Iberia
The contribution of Muslims and Jews to Iberian and European Christian culture
Cultural exchanges and relations between Jews, Muslims, and Christians
The Umayyad Caliphate and its significance for the history of Islamic civilization
The development of the Iberian Christian kingdoms
The concepts of Reconquista and Crusade in the Iberian Peninsula; the historical
debate over the continuity of the continuity between the Visigoth kingdom of Hispania
and the Christian kingdom(s)
The shifting balance of power between the Muslim and Christian kingdoms following
the 12th and13th-century Christian conquests; political, military, social, and cultural
consequences
The roles of the Mendicant and the religious Military Orders in the conquest and
repopulation of Muslim territories
The status of women in Muslim, Jewish, and Christian Iberia
