Jones Cup Invitational Becomes Annual Event in 2009

SEA ISLAND, GA (April 22, 2008) – Originating as a prelude to the 38th Walker Cup in 2001, the Jones Cup Invitational has prompted Sea Island Company to make the popular biennial event an annual one, beginning with the Feb. 6-8 competition in 2009. The Jones Cup Invitational has attracted an international field of top collegians, amateurs, mid-amateurs and juniors since 2001. Past winners of the 54-hole stroke play competition include D. J. Trahan (2001), Greg Jones (2003), Nicholas Thompson (2005) and Luke List (2007). “The Jones Cup Invitational has been recognized among the world’s finest amateur tournaments,” said Eric Schneider, vice president of golf operations for the Sea Island Company. “Through our commitment to conducting the Jones Cup on an annual basis, we hope to gain further continuity and relevance in the amateur golf world by providing a world-class forum for the world’s best amateurs.” Sea Island’s Ocean Forest Golf Club, perennially ranked among the country’s top 100 golf courses, will continue to host the Jones Cup Invitational. Recently renovated by architect Rees Jones, Ocean Forest (7,321 yards, par-72, 144 slope) provides a spectacular test amid its stunning mix of lakes, forest and Georgia oceanfront. Hosting the Jones Cup Invitational on an annual basis is a natural for Sea Island Company and the A.W. Jones family, enthusiastic supporters of amateur golf throughout their 80 years owning and operating the Sea Island Golf Club and Cloister Hotel. In recent years, Sea Island has hosted the 2001 Walker Cup and seven USGA Championships in addition to the four Jones Cups. Invitations for the Jones Cup Invitational are based on performance in national amateur tournaments and are mailed in October.
