Dear 2010 Amateurs Participants,

We would like to welcome you as a participant in the 7th annual golf competition known simply as “The Amateurs.”  The 2010 Amateurs’ field has been acclaimed as one of the top seven fields ever assembled in the history of the event.  This year, we welcome back 2 former Amateurs who had taken a brief hiatus from the tournament as well as 2 rookies who are about to embark on the greatest golf experience of their lives.  While we are excited to see some new and familiar faces, we will also miss long-standing Amateur participants Jason Holbrook(s) and John Bryson as well as Andy Beckman and Jim Echols.  We hope that these respected competitors may once again join our ranks in the future.

2010 also brings a new venue, two new golf courses and new lodging arrangements which for the first time will accommodate everyone in the same building.  It will be an adventure for all, but only eight will leave victorious.  We will be departing on Thursday, May 20th, for lovely Heber Springs, AR.  The first round of competition will begin bright and early on Friday morning.  We will be following the same schedule as last year with two rounds of competition on Friday, one on Saturday morning and the final round on Sunday morning before heading home.  An optional round may be played on Saturday afternoon, but it will not be counted toward the overall competition.

We picked Heber Springs as the venue for this year's event because it is a progressively growing economic community of businesses and industry where you will find friendly and civic-minded community members who are extremely outgoing. Heber Springs has a temperate climate with spring temperatures ranging from lows in the mid-40's to highs reaching the mid-70's.  While Heber Springs has a lot to offer, we will be spending most of our time on one golf course - Tannenbaum.

Ranked the #1 resort golf course in the state of Arkansas, Mountain Ranch is an 18 hole championship layout carved out of splendid natural Ozark beauty.  While renowned architect Edmund Ault's challenging 6,780 yard masterpiece has hosted more than five state golf championships, it has never had the honor of hosting the Amateurs.  It has been said that players of all abilities will "enjoy" a round at Mountain Ranch...

Tannenbaum is actually a peninsula surrounded by water carved out of the Ozark Mountains and the crystal-clear waters of Greers Ferry Lake.  Amateurs participants will be glad to know that every hole is tree-lined and elevation from tee to green changes drastically.  The John Floyd-designed course offers one of the most challenging layouts in the state; it was rated by Golf Digest as one of the best places to play in 2005-2006. Please do not ask why it has not been rated as anything by Golf Digest since then.  If you find your golf game struggling as the competition goes on, Tannenbaum's convenient location puts it close to world-record trout fishing on the Little Red River, recreation on Greers Ferry Lake, arts, crafts and shopping.

All of the information you will need can be found in this media guide, which will be distributed to all registered media representatives.  But if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.  We hope this year's competition will be as good as any, and we look forward to seeing you on the course!

Your humble servants,

The Founding Fathers

Ranked the #1 resort golf course in the state of Arkansas, Mountain Ranch is an 18 hole championship layout carved out of splendid natural Ozark beauty.  Renowned architect Edmund Ault's challenging 6,780 yard masterpiece will have you coming back time and time again.  Along with the vacation amenities of nearby Greers Ferry Lake and Little Red River, Mountain Ranch offers the finest in family vacation possibilities.

Host of more than five state golf championships, Mountain Ranch is an exciting test of golf.  From the back tees, players will be called on to play every shot in the bag.  The front nine provides a gentle and sloping introduction to the course, while

the back nine requires precision and strategy to navigate a splendid yet dangerous string of holes.  The par 5, 14th hole presents an 80 foot drop from tee to fairway.  The 15th hole challenges players with an uphill 395 yard par 4 that is considered by many to be the toughest in the state.  Players of all abilities will enjoy a round at Mountain Ranch.

Mountain Ranch features a warm and inviting clubhouse with a fully stocked golf shop to meet every golfing need.  The expansive practice range is a perfect place to brush up on your game.  After a round, relax in Bogies Restaurant, a casual, natural setting that will let you soak in the Ozark Mountain experience.

Carved out of the Ozark Mountains surrounding the crystal-clear waters of Greers Ferry Lake, Tannenbaum is actually a peninsula surrounded by water. Every hole is tree-lined and elevation from tee to green changes drastically, especially #12, where the drop is 130 feet straight downhill to a semi-island green carved from the mountainside. The John Floyd-designed course offers five sets of tees and one of the most challenging layouts in the state; it was rated by Golf Digest as one of the best places to play in 2005-2006.

Tannenbaum also offers a 10-acre proactive facility with driving range, putting and chipping green and

practice bunker. Its convenient location puts Tannenbaum close to world-record trout fishing on the Little Red River, recreation on Greers Ferry Lake, arts, crafts and shopping and other nearby Natural State Golf Trail courses.

Welcome to Tannenbaum Golf Club & Resort. Once you've experienced the joy and fun of one round of golf at Tannenbaum GC, you will leave here refreshed and with an addiction that you'll want to fulfill again and again! Enjoy the serenity that is Tannenbaum!

2007 RECAPBy Anonymous Staff Writer

For the forth year in a row, some fellow golfers and I headed off to play our annual golf tournament we call The Amateurs, which is loosely based on The Masters and The Ryder Cup professional golf tournaments. The only difference is that instead of a bunch of pros playing four rounds of golf for over a million bucks on the best golf courses in the world, we are a bunch of hackers playing four rounds in two or three days for a few bucks on some of the best (read cheapest) golf courses in the south. In the past the tournament has been played at the Robert Trent Jones Trail, Callaway Gardens, and Dancing Rabbit. This year The Amateurs was played at the Hot Springs Village.

With some of the worst weather ever experienced for the tournament, we still had our largest group to date with 16 competitors. We played two rounds on Friday, one early on Saturday, had an afternoon at the Derby, and then a final round on Sunday. Highlights from the weekend included playing a couple rounds through hail, fog, rain, lightning & cold, endless handicap discussions, A's integrity being challenged, Peter & Jeff talking too much, Jason and myself talking too little, one long dinner at Coy's, getting lost, Dallas not officially running the tournament and also finding out who is the #1 employer of college graduates each year. Not until the second nine of the final round did short sleeves make an appearance. If it wasn't The Amateurs, none of the participant would of been playing this weekend for sure. But the weather was a great equalizer to most.

Golf and fellowship were the two priorities. This year, as in the past, many received more golf than they had hoped as scores soared in to the 100s. Year five next year promises to be a big one, but until then be sure to check out the pics from this year's tournament. Congratulations to Blake and the Men-O-War: JB, Jason, Josh, A, Matt, Tom and myself for pulling out a close

victory to take the prize. Also thanks to worthy competitors on The Curse: Coach Kennon, Peter, Dallas, Preston, Tony, Jim, Jeff and William for making the weekend great. When asked to comment on how his team pulled out the victory at The 2007 Amateurs, Coach Bourland commented, "How exactly do you get out of the world's largest gated community?" Coach Vaughan was unavailable for comment. Remember it's never too early to go ahead and start shaping up your game and handicap for next year.

Commentary on the Questioning of A's IntegrityBy A Thompson“After playing 36 holes over 12 hours in the pouring down rain and listening to Dallas ignite a controversy over his handicap with glorified stories about his play over the final 18 holes, A got pulled into a laundry room by the two team captains around 11pm to discuss his handicap. At the time, A was interested in four things: beer, eating JB’s leftover pizza, watching Sportscenter and going to bed. Once inside the laundry room, Captain Vaughn of The Curse immediately asked A, ‘As a man of integrity, what is your real handicap?’ Thompson’s initial shock at the question quickly began to heat up into a nuclear explosion about the themes implicit in Captain Vaughn’s tone, when Captain Bourland jumped in and reminded A that Kennon frequently uses this kind of slang phrase when asking for an honest answer. A decided not to attempt a round-house kick on Captain Vaughn’s head and an agreement between the two teams was finalized which included a revised handicap for A.”

2008 RECAPBy Anonymous Staff Writer

Well, the 2008 Amateurs was as historic as any. The House of Mojo, lead by Captain Jason Holbrook, held on to defeat the Sons of Thunder & Captain John Bryson in a match that went down to the wire. In a format designed for absolute parity, the final scorecard showed that Mojo finished with 26 points out of 38, revised downward from 28 out of 40 in the middle of the weekend so that certain Mojoans could argue that they did not stack the teams in order to win money from their friends.

Many improvements were made to the format this year, most notably the addition of several prizes & parting gifts from random retailers & ministries around Memphis that support any group of 16 men coming together to play golf for a weekend. Many thanks to Founding Father Chris Hill for leading the charges in getting free stuff & Founding Father Blake Bourland & participant Kennon Vaughan who contributed. Another marked improvement from previous years was the catered dinner on Friday night, which eliminated the 3 hour wait for an overcooked steak & cold baked potato. While the steakhouse may be reinstated in the future, catfish night proved to be a big hit. Not improved from last year was the weather, which could not have been worse. However, weather has never hindered an Amateurs competition before, & it could not prevent this from being the best Amateurs to date. Muscle Shoals turned out to be a great venue due to its proximity to Memphis, affordability & durability under exorbitantly high numbers of strokes taken in 3 days.

Friday was a typical first day at the Amateurs as everyone woke up early & excited & headed to the course around 7am despite the fact that RTJ Muscle Shoals was dead center in the path of a terrible thunderstorm that promised a day of rain. After an extended check-in time at the clubhouse, the Amateurs got underway around 11am on Fighting Joe. The first round & a half were played in standard Friday weather of torrential rain, wind & temperatures below 60. But Amateurs don’t back down from a monsoon, especially one with only intermittent lightening. Mojo was clearly better prepared for the rain & won both round 1 match-ups by a total of 17 strokes. These victories gave Mojo an 8 point lead that would ultimately prove insurmountable.

In an effort to take advantage of their advantage in inclement weather, Mojo pushed to play the front 9 of round 2 in among continuing scattered storms that resulted in minor flooding on the course. Round 2 was ultimately suspended due to darkness after squeezing in 9 holes, but Thunder had already gotten its revenge as Asa, the team mascot, had squeezed out a mess on Kennon’s pants. Both teams retreated to Doublehead Resort to dry out & enjoy a catfish supper at Butler Cabin while Kennon looked for some stain remover.

After a good night’s rest, the rain moved out & everyone felt revitalized for Saturday’s rounds. The morning round was back on Fighting Joe for the second round of 2 man best ball. It came down to the wire, but ultimately all four matches were split evenly. With the Tiger game starting in just a few hours, everyone hustled out to finish round 2 from Friday. Although the first 9 were played on the front 9 of Schoolmaster, scheduling conflicts forced the second 9 to be moved to the

front 9 of Fighting Joe. Thunder was able to shut out the distraction & come back to split the round 2 matches despite being down after Friday’s first 9 holes. This left Thunder down 8 points with one round to go that was worth a total of 16 points.

Everyone put the competition aside on Saturday night to root for the Tigers except for Holbrook & Beckman, who went head-to-head on the grill. After celebrating the Tigers victory over UCLA together, a heated debate broke out about whether Memphis could have handled Davidson in the tournament. Needless to say, the stage was set for an epic battle on Sunday.

Thunder knew that they had to leave it all on the course if they had any chance of overcoming the 6-point deficit (revised downward from 8 on Saturday in an unprecedented move by Amateurs captains) in one round of golf. But then again, comebacks & clutch performances are what the Amateurs is all about. In typical fashion, the course dried out the weather was perfect for the final round of 8 individual match play matches. Both teams played with heart & passion, creating golf shots that defied physics & often destroyed beautiful patches of fairway. But when it was all said & done, Thunder came up short winning only 2 matches on the final day.

The big winners on the weekend were Dallas who won Co-MVP honors, Low Net Total on the weekend & whose team took home the grand prize. Kennon also won Co-MVP with Blake taking the Low Net Round of the weekend. Jim won the dubious honor of High Net Total.

All great Amateurs involve controversy & this year was no different. Rookie Andy Beckman, veteran William Martin, Tony Wade & A Thompson were among those in the heat of it. Firsthand details were not available at press time of this summary, but are of course welcome to be submitted in the comments.

Thanks to everyone who made this year the most successful in Amateurs history - we were able to raise more money from charities & ministries than ever before.

2009 RECAPBy Anonymous Staff Writer

2009 proved to be another exciting year for the Amateurs due primarily to a great field of participants and perfect golf weather.  16 men took on the ultimate challenge of traveling to a small town in North Alabama to compete against each other and exercise their dominion over God's beautiful creation with little more than a bag of 14 clubs and a bunch of little white balls.

It all began at Broadway Pizza on April 9.  For the first time in Amateurs history, the teams were picked using a live draft format with captains Tony Wade and Preston Carpenter alternating picks.  Captain Carpenter took a unique approach of picking his team based on historical winning percentages while Captain Wade stuck to the more traditional plan of picking lower handicappers first.  Based on the draft results, Captain Wade's team chose the name Won at Broadway (WAB) while Captain Carpenter's team, known primarily for their creativity, chose to be called Carpenter's 8 (C8).

Everyone arrived at the Doublehead Resort on Thursday night, May 14th.  Captain Wade set the tone of the weekend early by going through his hour-long P90X routine on Thursday night as all 15 of the other competitors watched in amazement.  At one point, Vaughans tried to pick up on the workout routine, but he didn't last long and decided to call it a night after the wall-sit.

The competition began early on Friday morning with two 4-man best ball matches played on Fighting Joe. The Joe was in top condition and proved a formidable foe for the Amateurs as countless balls sailed into the waste-high grass never to be seen again. WAB won both of the 4-man matches to take home 4 points.

Round 2 followed shortly thereafter and was also played on the Joe, but this time it was a 2-on-2 best ball competition.  WAB took 3 out of the 4 afternoon matches to take a commanding 10-2 lead into the clubhouse after day 1.  P90X paid off as Captain Wade shot 86-86 in his first 2 rounds.

After an exhausting day of hiking through the hyper-allergenic tall grass and trying to remember how many strokes they

took in the sand, the Amateurs congregated at the world-famous Stanfield's Steak House which is best known for its variety of cuts of meat, all of which look and taste the exact same when served. 32 individual rounds of golf were recounted from various perspectives, and only one question remained at the end of the dinner:  what exactly was that gook in Vaughans's eye?  That question remained unanswered as all of the Amateurs headed back to Butler cabin to get rested for Saturday's matches...except for Captain Wade, of course, who completed yet another hour of his P90X routine.

C8 awoke Saturday morning with a renewed sense of purpose and ready to mount a comeback, but WAB had no intention of backing down.  Round 3 consisted of 4 more 2-man best ball matches, but this time the matches were played on the Schoolmaster.  The pressure was intensifying for C8.  At one point in the round, Andy Beckman was giving playing partner Jack Pierratt some pointers to which Jack solemnly responded, “Get out of the way of my backswing.”  The Schoolmaster affirmed the fact that C8 team members are more studious than they are athletic as they dropped 3 of the 4 matches and halved the 4th. Captain Wade's began to feel the effects of P90X as he fired a 98 on Saturday.  Day 3 ended with WAB up 17-3 overall, but C8 was still in the competition as Sunday's matches were worth a total of 16 points.

Through round 3, the 2009 Amateurs had been as competitive as ever, but before tempers got out of hand, everyone took a break for some friendlier forms of competition.  Six diehard golfers opted to play yet another round of golf despite the (relatively) light rain, while the remaining participants went back to Butler cabin to see who could knock down a pyramid of empty beer cans the quickest.  The empty beer cans apparently won, as the pyramid seemed to grow faster than anyone could knock it down.  Everyone reconvened Saturday evening to continue the Amateur tradition of a catered fried catfish dinner, complete with hushpuppies, french fries and banana pudding.

Sunday morning brought with it aching muscles and increased cholesterol levels.  Stamina was going to be a key to Sunday's matches, and P90X was no longer WAB's friend.  The weather Sunday was perfect for the final round of competition, which was played on the Schoolmaster.  C8 needed to win 7 matches and halve the 8th in order to tie the overall competition.  As the scores started to come in, it became clear that C8 had a chance to beat the odds and pull it out:

Captain Wade continued his slide as he shot a final round 99 and lost to Captain Carpenter 2&1. Beckman fed off of Pierratt's fire from Saturday and halved his match with Bryson. In true DownLine style, Beckman passed the victory torch onto Vaughans who closed out struggling Founding Father Geer 4&2. While Marino wondered what happened to his glory days as Amateurs MVP, he still managed to maintain his pride by closing out Founding Father Bourland 4&2. Coming off of a career round on Saturday afternoon, Rookie Echols put up a good fight but ultimately fell to Pieratt 2&1. Holbrooks ran into a red-hot Walker, who found his swing on the back nine of the last round and closed out the match 3&2. With 5 matches won and 1 halved, Captain Carpenter's draft strategy was beginning to make sense.  Rookie Byrd was locked in an intense battle with Matthews who is known for his killer instinct at the Amateurs.

The match came down to the final hole as they were AS after 17.  Rookie Byrd had a 3-foot putt to win the hole.  Byrd learned what the pressure of the Amateurs is all about as he missed the putt and Matthews won the hole.  It is not an easy place for rookies to win.

Ultimately, Byrd's putt was not a deciding factor as Founding Father Dorman continues is MVP-sytle play and eliminated Founding Father Hill 5&4 in one of the more talked about matches of the weekend.

While Sunday's performance raise C8's overall grade point average, WAB finished at the top of the class by securing 5 points and the overall victory.  The final score on the weekend was 22-14 as WAB took home the cup, proving once again that past performance is not indicative of future results.

The 2009 Amateurs lived up to all expectations.  Friendships were strengthened, rivalries were born, a lot of golf balls were hit and a lot of food was consumed.  And if you are like me and this recap leaves you hungry for just a little bit more, don't worry, the 2010 Amateurs is just around the corner...

Bella Giornanta (It’s a Beautiful Day)Captained By Tom MarinoBy Tom MarinoIt is indeed an honor to accept a captainship at the 2010 Amateurs.  Never in my wildest dreams, and there have been some wild ones, could I have envisioned this day. My conversion to Christ, my wedding vows with the love of my life, the birth of my three sons, and now this – truly I am a blessed man. Although my mother celebrates her 100th birthday and Jana and I celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary on March 28th, I will cancel those plans in order to attend the draft. Scott Walker will be an honorable and formidable foe, and with the two of us as captains I think we can all anticipate a level of aggressive competition and fierce intensity that we have not experienced at the Amateurs to this point. The faint of heart should quietly step aside now.

American StormCaptained by Scott WalkerBy Scott WalkerWow, what an honor. I am humbled by the offer and graciously accept.

I am ready to step up the level of competition of the 2010 Amateurs to a new level. In between now and May 20th I will be outside the Poplar Foundation office as well as 70 N. Century camping out in Marino’s head.

Some may describe me as quiet, but as my Christ Methodist Day School conduct grades reflect I can throw down verbally with the best of them.

I purchased a bullhorn this afternoon and will start breaking Tom down immediately. I want him visibly shaking as he is teeing off the first tee. I look forward to the draft and building a team that will absolutely humiliate our competition.

I will do my best to make the founding fathers proud.
