Jolly & Bright
The holiday season is upon us and it’s the perfect time to reflect on why many of us pick up our hooks: gift-giving. When spotted crocheting, you’re probably familiar with being asked “What are you making?” which is naturally followed up with “And who are you making it for?” This comes as no surprise since we all know handmade items make the best gifts. The process of crocheting a gift truly brings the maker and the recipient closer. Your loved one is in mind as you select pattern, color, and fiber. You think endearing thoughts of your recipient as you work row by row putting bits of love into each stitch. The end result is always something special and heartfelt. You could just melt at the look on your loved one’s face when they realize you remembered their favorite color is turquoise not teal or the fact that their feet are always cold.
The designs featured in this month’s pattern pack offer many opportunities for personalized gift-giving. Certainly there are family and friends on your list who will adore something cozy to wear. There is something particularly satisfying about giving socks, slippers, and sweaters. It’s comforting to know that you’re giving your favorite people a warm embrace even when you’re not near. How about a quick pair of the Sneaker Slipper Socks in team colors for your resident sports fan? They’ll love to wear them to show team pride while relaxing on the couch and watching the next big game. Or go with a pair of those exquisite purple socks for the lovely ladies in your life. Your thoughtful gift will warm their hearts and their toes every time they wear them.

The wrap-style Baby Kimono Sweater is a treasured gift for the newest addition to your family. If you stitch it in a neutral color, the sweater can be worn with many outfits all winter long as well as passed down from sibling to sibling and beyond. It’s a wonderful thought that something you craft today can keep many babies nice and toasty for generations to come. The Homestead Cowl is cozy and glamorous with its shiny sequins, and would make a wonderful present for a trendy lady on your shopping list.
Don’t forget to spread some handmade holiday cheer outside of your family and friends! Is there a teacher on your list? They’ll love the Holly & Berry Garland to add something festive to their classroom this year, and the rainbow hues would be a joyful presence over a doorway. The garland would also be a lovely surprise to brighten up a coworker’s cubicle. What about your boss or your neighbor? A colorful stocking filled with their favorite sweets and treats will surely brighten their day. Bringing handmade treasures into our communities and workplaces is a great idea to conjure up the holiday spirit of good will towards others. No matter what you are stitching and to whom you are giving, if you craft with a jolly heart your gifts are sure to show the appreciation, love, and kindness towards others that the season brings!

Rohn Strong: Why YOU Should Crochet Some
Socks TODAY! By: Salena Baca
We love your line of crocheted socks! Tell us why everyone should make/ own/wear a pair of hand-crocheted socks?
Crochet socks are like mini sweaters for your feet! They keep you warm, comfy, and feeling great. I also love that crochet socks allow us to express ourselves through color and texture, even if they are just on our feet!
You are now a world-renowned instructor on Tunisian Crochet— Congratulations! For those who are new or unfamiliar to Tunisian, can you give some encouraging advice so that crochet fans will try it?
I love Tunisian Crochet and have for some time! Anyone looking to get started in Tunisian Crochet should just have a great attitude and a “go-get-em” spirit. It only takes a few minutes to learn and opens up options that are vast and quite gorgeous!
What are your favorite yarns right now? What colors do you recommend for the Winter 2014 season?
This winter I am all about black. Not sure why, I just love it. Usually, I am a colorful and loud person, but this year I am settling back a bit. As for yarns, I am obsessed with Lion Brand’s new yarn Pelt. It is similar to Fun Fur but in natural colors that mimic actual animal fur. I adore it!
I love to follow you on Instagram, especially as you post pictures of your dog Chase (I’m a dog lover, too)! Can you tell us a bit about how he came into your life, and what he means to you?
Chase was a rescue of sorts. He had been passed from abused family to abused family.
I found a photo on Craigslist of this amazing little dog who was said to be a Labrador. We picked him up the next day, and from the moment I saw his playful spirit I knew he was going to be my best friend. We picked him up at six months and now he is nearly 5 years old. He had helped me through my struggle with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and has stayed by my husband’s side through a life-threatening illness. He is pretty amazing.
Tell us about an average day off for you. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not “at work”?
What is this ‘day off’ you speak of? Seriously though, I feel like I am doing something wrong if I don’t have something in my hands to crochet or knit. Lately however, I have taken to reading a lot, which curbs the guilty feeling!
What are you reading right now?
Right now I am reading a spunky little mystery named Permed to Death. It is hilarious and a quick read that I love. Kind of a modern take on Murder, She Wrote.
Tell us about your favorite dessert!
I love me some chocolate cake. Lots and lots of chocolate cake.
What was your best vacation?
My best vacation probably has been traveling to Chicago for Vogue Knitting Live. It was a working vacation but still lots of fun!
The last time you REALLY laughed out loud was... What happened?
Last night! I make laughing a huge part of my life; a spirit of laughter is the best medicine. Oh, and I was watching my favorite show, Mike and Molly!

Call this Panel #1 and the other Panel #2. If the hole on the side seam is on the right side, then that panel will lay on top of the other panel. Call this Panel #1 and the other Panel #2.
On Panel #1 (top laying panel), join with sl st in end of Row 59 (65, 71, 81), ch 50 (50, 60, 60). Finish off.
On Panel #2 (bottom laying panel), join w/sl st. in end of Row 59 (65, 71, 81), ch 90 (90, 100, 100). Finish off. This tie will be fed through side seam hole and brought around back to meet the other tie.
