The Tokyo No.7 annotated mosaic is the first in aseries covering the Tokyo Urban Area. This mosaiccovers that port of central Tokyo adjacent to theImperial Palace and E of the Sumida River, includingmost of the area subjected to incendiary attock on10 March 1945. A plot of the destroyed area to-gether with a Damage Assessment Report isin process.Limitsof the main area of damage resulting from the10 March attock extend roughly 5 miles E from theImperial Palace to the Ara River and approximately6 miles N from Tokyo Boy to industries around theSumida RR Yards (Mosaic Reference No. 78). Themain burned-out area penetrates marginal sectionsin the modern public building and commercial districtNE and E of the Palace and sporadic residentialdamage was effected S of the Palace. The attachedmosaic does not cover other areas of damage to theWand NW. After elimination of unoccupied land andwater areas and undamaged segments, the total areaof damage approximates 13.2 square miles.Only the larger and more important installationshave been annotated on the attached mosaic. With afew exceptions, schools, public buildings, military bar-racks, storage areas, lumber mills, etc. have not beenlisted. The sections NW and SW of the Palace arepredominantly residential but include military estab-lishments and many public buildings. Japan's principalbusiness and financial concerns have their head-

quarters directly Eof the government offices surround-ing the Palace, and the main retail and commercialdistrict occupies the area extending E to the SumidaRiver. Bordering Tokyo Boy S of the central businessand commercial district is on industrial zone importantfor machinery and machine tools, communicationsequipment, optical and precision instruments, aircraftand ordnonce components, as well as trans-shipmentand storage facilities.Prior to 10 March 1945, the area extending Nfrom the main commercial district was one of Tokyo'smost congested residential sections and included alarge number of small plants engaged primarily inmaking consumers' goods and a few significant pro-ducers of aircraft, ordnance components and precisioninstruments. The area E of the Sumida River was alsoheavily buil t-up but primarily industrial. In addit ionto the large plants making electrical equipment, ord-nance, aircraft ports, machine tools, marine engines, special steel products, and industrial leather andrubber goods, this area contained many sizeablechemical plants, lumber mills and producers of con-sumers' goods, and hundreds of small machine shopsand ironworks, many of which have been identifiedas supplying castings, forgings, and machined partsto shipyards and large producers of end-militaryproducts located in this district and elsewhere in theTokyo Area.
