Sometimes when parents hear “karate” and “martial arts”, they associate those words with fighting. At Superkids Karate in Mississauga, karate means confidence;

self-respect; respect for others; making goals and accomplishing them.

While Superkids has been in business since 1988, it has been serving the Meadowvale community since 1993 and in its current location since 2001. And although Superkids has been in business for quite some time, the feel of the place when you walk in is fresh, new and welcoming – the perfect place to go if you want your kids to have fun in a bright and colourful environment.

When the Superkids program was first designed, its structure was based on that of the Peel District School Board’s education system. That means the program was designed not only as a way to teach karate and martial arts skills, but to teach in a way that is effective for kids specifically. That has remained true over the years, thanks to current owner and instructor, David Grabb. For David, teaching karate is not something he does on the side – it is his full-time job and focus. His family is always nearby, with his wife, Julie, son, Alex and daughter, Samantha, all having working roles in the Superkids business.

Much like David and his family’s full-time dedication to Superkids, martial arts is not just something that is learned while in class, but something that can be adapted as a way of life. Self-respect and confidence that a child develops while in karate class are things that stay with that child in his or her daily life outside of Superkids. David and the other instructors also lead a very interactive style of teaching. Each class, check-lists are sent home with children in order for them to track progress outside of Super-kids. This is a positive way for a child’s overall development and accomplishments in life to be recognized and encouraged.

If you’re interested in giving karate a try, Superkids offers a trial program that allows both kids and parents to make sure they’re comfortable. Once committed to the pro-gram, everyone starts off in the beginner group. Eventually the group splits into age categories as students move up to the intermediate and advanced levels. The classes are broken up into a self-defence component, kata (putting karate elements into rou-tines) and an un-competitive sport element geared toward fitness. Unlike many other karate schools, Superkids does not focus on competition, but rather on reaching goals and developing self-esteem, confidence and respect for others.

Along with regular classes throughout the year, Superkids also offers summer and March Break camps, in-school gym programs and also participates in demos at various community events. Rotary Easter Seals Sail

The skies may have started off grey on August 15th, but a sunny day was inevitable for those at the Rotary Easter Seals Sailing Day. Hosted by the Port Credit Yacht Club, Rotarians welcomed Easter Seals children and their families out for a fun-filled day of sailing and

activities. Guests enjoyed entertainment by clowns and a face painter, a BBQ and sandwich lunch break and then an afternoon of sailing with Port Credit Yacht Club boaters. Now in its 26th year, this event is sponsored by the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians, Port Credit Yacht Club and Rotary Clubs. Although the clouds did clear in the early afternoon, the joy that each Easter Seals child experienced was even brighter than any sunshine!
