SKI CENTER

A letter from Carolyn Thompson, the 2008 Chesterfi eld-Colonial Heights

Christmas Mother

Dear Friends,Christmas is sharing with our neighbors! In her story, “Christmas is Sharing,” Colonial Heights

resident Mary Anna Martin tells how her family made Christmas special for a neighbor in need during the [Great] Depression. Three boxes containing toys, clothing and food were prepared and delivered on Christmas Eve. Much has changed in the past decades, but caring and sharing are still the same today. As your 2008 Christmas Mother, I am honored to represent a program that enables two neighboring communities to exemplify the holiday spirit by sharing with those in need.

For 62 years the Chesterfi eld-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother program has made sure local children and elderly residents can celebrate the holidays with gifts and food. Volunteers work during the year collecting donations, purchasing food, clothing, toys and books. In 2007, we assisted 1,706 families consisting of 5,331 individuals. This is truly the picture of neighbors sharing in the true holiday spirit.

While the committee of dedicated volunteers coordinates the Christmas Mother program, it is only with the help of individuals, businesses, churches, civic groups and schools in the community that makes the joy of the holiday season possible for so many children and elderly in the Chesterfi eld-Colonial Heights area. Please consider supporting our program in the following ways:

• Sponsor an entire family or elderly person by providing food and gifts for Christmas.

• Donate food and/or gifts for children, teenagers and the elderly.

• Contribute a monetary donation that will be used to purchase toys, food and clothing for families that are not sponsored. Ask your employer to consider making a matching donation.

• Volunteer your time at the Christmas Center. The center is open Dec. 2 through Dec. 15 from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Please contact the offi ce at (804) 748-1183 or (804) 751-4657 to sponsor a family. Donations may be mailed to the Chesterfi eld-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother at P.O. Box 2500, Chesterfi eld, VA 23832.

It is through the generosity and kindness of those in the community that makes the Christmas Mother program a success. We appreciate your support and wish you a most wonderful holiday season.

The Ski Center staff with resident canine, Leif.

Carolyn Thompson

Sycamore Square Shopping Center will celebrate the season with a holiday open house and join with the Chesterfi eld-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother to help those in need in our community on Fri., Nov. 21.

Through Sycamore Square’s “Bikes for Tikes & Teens” donation drive, Carolyn Thompson, this year’s 2008 Chesterfi eld-Colonial

Heights Christmas Mother, will be accepting new tricycles, bicycles, bicycle helmets and safety gear at Sycamore Pewter & Gifts from 5-9 p.m.

Several Sycamore Square merchants will also host giving trees where customers may choose an ornament listing a toy wish for a child in need.

‘Wish Upon a Paw’

People aren’t the only ones losing their homes in this waning economy. Pets are, too. Money woes and the high rate of foreclosures are forcing some owners to give up or abandon their pets, which in turn is

stretching the resources of local animal rescue groups. As a result, the Ski Center, Lite 98 and the Sycamore

Square Merchants’ Association are teaming up for “Wish Upon a Paw” during Sycamore Square’s annual open house on Friday, Nov. 21, from 5-9 p.m. Guests are invited to make a donation of money or pet supplies to help meet the critical needs of local animal rescue groups, including Richmond Hero, SOS Pen Pals, SomeBuddies and others.

During the kickoff event, Lite 98’s Kat Simons will hold a live remote at Center Square (in the former RVSP location) to promote “Wish Upon a Paw.” Representatives from animal rescue groups will be on-site to accept donations.

The Ski Center will continue accepting donations at its shop in Sycamore Square through January.

Needed supplies include pet food, cat litter, housebreaking pads, fl eece blankets, towels, paper towels, beds, trash bags, bleach, laundry detergent with bleach, cat toys, metal dog crates, cat carriers, offi ce supplies and more.

As loyalists have known for more than a quarter century, Sycamore Pewter & Gifts celebrates holiday gift-giving in spirited fashion with a distinctive touch.

For enthusiastic alumni and current collegians, owners Carolyn and Sam Shiplett have created the “Collegiate Corner,” where you’ll fi nd collections of double old-fashion glasses, clocks, paperweights, lamps and more.

Want to add a special fi nishing touch?

“We can embroider a lot of delightful things for all the schools including laundry bags, blankets and golf towels,” says Carolyn.

A must see, too, are the collegiate key chains and ornaments hand-cast in pewter and made in-house by Sycamore Pewter.

“We also are carrying Vera Bradley bags, accessories, luggage and stationery,” says Carolyn. “Some of the bags can be monogrammed here in our store to add that personal touch.”

Our baby corner includes various styles of cups, porringers, spoons, rattles, all of which are perfect for engraving. We also have blankets, stuffed animals, stockings and more items that can be embroidered.

And, don’t miss Sycamore Pewter’s 2008 limited edition ornament, “Virginia Christmas Bells.”

For a truly personalized gift, take advantage of Sycamore

Pewter’s engraving services, available for many of our selections.

As always, Sycamore Pewter offers complimentary gift-wrapping, and can also ship packages via UPS.

This year you will fi nd us in our new location still in Sycamore Square. Our new address is 1353 Sycamore Square. Let us make your holiday shopping a merry experience.

Entertaining for the holidays can be a lot of work, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifi ce having fun while everyone else has a good time. The experts at Bed Bath & Beyond offer these tips for making your gatherings simple, easy and stress-free (well almost). Make a game plan

When planning your holiday entertaining, the key to minimizing holiday-induced anxiety is to plan in advance. * Start by determining the amount of people you expect, including dinner and overnight guests.

* Take inventory. Make sure you have the essentials you will need to serve your holiday meal — both basics and serving pieces.

* Think off the wall. If you’re hosting a buffet, set up the buffet table away from the wall to utilize both sides of the table to serve food. Maximize space on your table by using stepped serving dishes that have a small footprint such as a three tier stepped server.

Time-saving tips for the holiday chefAdding these key items into your holiday routine will save you

time by facilitating planning, execution and clean-up. * Oven to table: Choose bake and serve warmers for your holiday needs. These stylish serving pieces not only look great, but they will also keep your food warm, freeing up essential space on your stove.

* Create more oven space: With a three-tier oven rack, put an end to waiting for one dish to cook before baking another. It creates more usable space on one side of your oven, leaving the other side open for more bulky food, like the turkey, and collapses for easy storage.

* Go for easy clean-up: Sometimes the preparation and cooking is easier than the clean up. Don’t be without a non-stick removable oven liner. When fi nished cooking, simply wipe it down or even throw it in the dishwasher.

Avoid last-minute panicThe more prepared you are for the holidays, the less stressful

they will be. Think ahead and plan for the “unexpected.” This way you can enjoy your own party.* Don’t cry over spilled wine! Use a microfi ber tablecloth that allows

spills to bead up and wipe away cleanly. * If you are expecting a lot of people, have folding chairs on hand for extra seating. For a more formal, uniform look, add regular or special folding chair covers.

* An infl atable Aero® Bed is the answer to that unanticipated sleepover guest. When the guest leaves, simply defl ate and store it for the next visit. Don’t forget the extra sheets and blankets!

With more families opting to stay home for the holidays, Santa might be the only person racking up

frequent fl ier miles this season. While getting your holiday gifts delivered intact may seem daunting, with some tips from a certifi ed packing professional, it’s easy to pack like a pro.

Think inside and outside the box“Always use a new box specifi cally designed for

shipping,” advises The UPS Store franchisee Les Beare, who has 20 holiday shipping seasons under his Santa belt. “The more times a box is used, the more it loses its strength

and protective quality. Plus, leftover shipping labels can create confusion about your package’s destination.”

Beare also advises never to exceed the maximum weight for the box, which is usually printed on the bottom. Too much weight can be a recipe for disaster.

The inside scoopAccording to Beare, a common mistake people make is to

underestimate the amount of internal packaging necessary to protect items. For the less experienced, he offers these tips:— Don’t use crumpled newspaper, grocery bags, or towels to

protect gifts. Instead — Give your gifts a cushy ride by wrapping each item in bubble

cushioning surrounded by at least two inches of packaging peanuts. (Think “green”: After the holidays, those pesky packaging peanuts can be recycled at participating The UPS Store locations.)

— Fragile objects such as electronics, ceramics and artwork require special packaging, such as added cushioning or a double box.

Finishing touches— Remove batteries from toys or electronics to avoid leakage or

suspicious sounds. Many electronic devices contain lithium batteries that can cause serious problems if not properly packed.

— Don’t forget to include a label inside the package with both the destination and your return addresses.

Sealing the deal— To seal a box securely, don’t use masking tape, cellophane tape,

duct tape, string or brown paper. Instead, use strong packaging tape at least two inches wide to fully reinforce the seams on your box.

When the current credit crisis caused a meltdown in the fi nancial marketplace this fall, John C. Neal, president of Union Bank & Trust, quickly produced a letter to customers and an advertisement outlining where a well-run community bank stood.

“The national fi nancial crisis may have raised questions in the minds of our customers – and customers of other banks about how we operate. We decided to tell them where we stand:

“We stand on solid banking ground...on sound principles and honest dealings.

“We stand by our customers and their communities through changes in their lives and changing times.

“We stand against fi nancial fads, against risks we would not take for our own families, and against products no one understands.

“We stand where we’ve stood since 1902...on Virginia soil with the people who live and work around us.

“Stated simply, we stand for you.”

This approach has worked for his bank and its customers “through ups and downs of the economy from the Great Depression to smaller, more recent disruptions,” Neal said, adding:

“We had no exposure to sub-prime mortgages; we have never been in that business. Our investment portfolio did not include stock or bonds issued by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, or any of the investment banking, insurance and brokerage fi rms in the headlines recently with solvency problems.”

Union Bank & Trust invests its customers’ deposits “in the best and safest places we know: our own communities,” Neal said.

His bank is not “immune to disruptions in fi nancial circles, however,…our annualized loan charge-offs and non-performing loans remain well below levels reported by most publicly traded banks based in Virginia. Because our

credit quality is strong, we continue to be able to support the credit requirements of our customers,” Neal concluded.

UNION BANK & TRUST

John C. NealAs the holidays draw near and families look forward to spending time together, get creative with the recipes you make and the parties you host. Celebrity event designer Preston Bailey, who has planned events for such notables

as Donald Trump, Oprah Winfrey and Catherine Zeta-Jones, has partnered with Uncle Ben’s to encourage people to consider a charitable approach to holiday entertaining this year.

“I am urging my guests to give back to a cause that is dear to my heart this holiday season,” said Bailey, author of three entertaining books. “For me, it’s the fi ght against hunger. In lieu of traditional hostess gifts, I’m suggesting on my party invitations that guests make a charitable donation to Feeding America.” Feeding America is the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief charity, and maintains a network of more than 200 food banks that reach communities across the country.

To download a complete holiday entertaining guide fi lled with recipes and tips from Bailey visit UncleBensGivesBack.com. For every holiday entertaining guide downloaded, Uncle Ben’s will donate $1 to Feeding America.
