Feltonfleet is a community where ‘individuals really matter’ - a core belief which shapes all we say and do. We know the most enjoyable personal growth comes from developing a child’s natural talents and skills. In nurturing this potential within a sharing community, with a strong sense of family, children are able to discover their gifts and grow in self-confidence, independence and compassion.

Our ethos is based upon positive learning, living and leading, alongside core values of honesty, respect, responsibility and happiness. The overriding sense of kindness and laughter is palpable in the classrooms, on the playing fields and in the dormitories. Our unique blend of day and boarding pupils creates a real buzz around school. Feltonfleet children are optimistic and inquisitive, with a thirst for life and learning. They thrive here.

The combination of talented and dedicated staff, an inspiring curriculum and 25 acres of beautiful grounds with exceptional facilities,

encourages children to use their imagination, to think creatively, to explore the world around them and to strive to excel. High standards and expectations are grounded in the conviction that academic excellence and enjoyment of childhood go hand in hand. Unusually for a prep school, we have ‘time to stop & think’ lessons to nourish emotional wellbeing and to develop resilience and strategies for lasting mental health.

As our pupils complete the four stages of their Feltonfleet journey, graduating after Common Entrance, they secure places and scholarships to leading independent senior schools in a range of academic, sporting, musical and all-round disciplines. They are well prepared for the next stage of their journey.

Come and see what makes Feltonfleet a wonderful school for your child’s preparatory education. I’ll be delighted to show you around.

Destination 13 breaks the Feltonfleet learning journey into four stages.

This reflects our belief that success and achievement happen in a happy,

optimistic environment where children travel at different speeds along

their bespoke academic and personal pathway.

During each stage there is a focus on core learning attributes with the aim of children

taking pride in and responsibility for their own learning.

On the following pages you will read about Destination 13 and how children progress

from dependent learners to inter-dependent learners, developing the self-esteem and

the confidence in themselves to ‘risk’ learning and acquiring new skills. On completion

in Year 8, pupils leave Feltonfleet as happy, independent, resilient learners with a

strong sense of service, an abiding respect for others and self-confidence. It is this

confidence that enables our children to continue their journey to be whoever they want

to be and go wherever they want to go.

Calvi House, the first stepping-stone in our Destination 13 journey, is

a dedicated Pre-Prep space surrounded by stimulating play areas, a

woodland garden and natural adventure trail. It is the perfect start to

school life, where confidence is nurtured and new friends are made.

Entering Nursery or Reception is a nurturing experience strengthened by positive home-

school partnerships. Early childhood is cherished, with priority given to exploratory

self-directed learning rooted in meaningful play. Children are encouraged to

express their feelings and ideas verbally, while beginning to consider and respect

the thoughts and feelings of others.

In Years 1 and 2, initiative, curiosity and risk taking are encouraged as children begin

to think for themselves and take greater responsibility for their words and actions.

They feel safe to challenge themselves, to try out ideas and learn from mistakes.

They have specialist teaching in French, Music, Digital Learning and PE.

The second stepping-stone of the Destination 13 journey takes pupils to

the main campus and into the Lower School.

A purposeful focus on developing independence and a positive attitude towards

living, learning and leading helps the pupils to continue to explore, try out new

experiences and strive to be the best versions of themselves. Pupils are divided into

forms, in which they are taught for most academic subjects. They are taught in sets for

Maths and English and move to specialist teachers and dedicated areas of the school

for French, Digital Learning, Design Technology, Music, Drama, Art and PE.

All those in Lower School complete this phase of their journey, secure in their sense of

belonging and with an exciting vision of the path ahead.

We nurture individual aptitudes, fostering a thirst for learning whilst developing the

skills pupils need across the curriculum. Those who need additional help with Maths

and English have tailored support. Games take place three times a week - a strong

fixtures programme fosters team spirit, physical fitness and collaboration.

Children become familiar with the routines in Middle School by Year 6, including

preparation for the rigours of external pre-tests supported by a robust pastoral

framework. Our many enrichment opportunities unlock potential and include activities

and trips in sports, art, drama and music. As Year 6 closes, pupils are ready to take

on the challenges and leadership responsibilities of the Upper School.

Year 5 brings new experiences for the children with greater subject-

specialist teaching alongside time with Form Tutors. Our nurturing

framework continues to support pupils as they build personal organisation,

self-motivation and self-discipline.

The final stepping stone marks the conclusion of the Feltonfleet experience,

which for a number of pupils culminates in applications for scholarships

at their senior schools.

Subject teaching is firmly focused on Common

Entrance. Alongside their academic preparation,

pupils flourish in assuming wider responsibilities

within the Feltonfleet community, from taking

meaningful leadership roles to representing the

school at the highest level in sporting, creative

and academic spheres.

The Enrichment provision, including the Upper

School Graduation Programme, the Leonardo

Lectures and annual academic symposiums with

partner schools, offers exciting opportunities for

academic and personal development. Individuals

can challenge themselves and develop resilience

through pursuing a wide variety of interests.

As their Destination 13 journey concludes, pupils

cultivate a mature approach to learning, confident

in making independent decisions. Above all they

feel a sense of security and belonging that proves

indispensable throughout their lives. They have

become the best version of themselves.

In Art pupils learn to apply different materials,

techniques and design processes to communicate

what they see, feel and think. The light and airy

studio is in regular use, whilst visits to art galleries,

workshops and exhibitions pepper the year.

In Design and Technology, pupils learn about

materials, their properties and practical applications.

Through project work pupils have the opportunity

to design and make products for a real purpose

with a specific target audience. Many students

develop entrepreneurial skills through ‘Feltonfleet

Warehouse’, a business enterprise group.

In Music, many pupils have individual lessons

with instrumental and vocal specialists. A weekly

programme of ensembles includes 4 choirs, 2

orchestras and groups for string and wind instruments.

The concert diary is extensive, with informal and

formal events, workshops and community visits.

This performance experience contributes towards

notable successes in ABRSM exams.

Regular Drama productions are a popular feature

amongst events in the Ashbee Theatre. Each year

group mounts an annual production, with all pupils

involved in a play or musical. A sizeable number of

pupils takes private LAMDA lessons in school.

In Dance, pupils study ballet, free style, jazz

and hip hop, tap and contemporary dance. The

annual Dance Show involves children from Nursery

to Year 8. A few pupils are involved regularly in

performances with the Royal Opera House and

London theatre, and Year 4 pupils can audition for

the London Children’s Ballet.

Feltonfleet is a highly creative school

enjoying considerable success in gaining

arts-based scholarships to senior schools.

Sport is integral to life at Feltonfleet, where our vision of ‘creating better

athletes for life’ underpins our coaching philosophy as much as competitive

matches. Both girls and boys play hockey, cricket and football; also, girls

play netball and boys play rugby.

In recent years, the school has enjoyed great success

at Rugby 7s (a choice for Years 7 - 8), swimming and

hockey, and is a Centre of Excellence for shooting. Our

heated indoor swimming pool is popular, with specialist

lessons throughout the school year, while athletics, cross-

country, archery and golf each contribute to the

annual sporting menu. Sport plays a central role

in the school calendar and offers something for

all abilities.

justifiably proud.

Our nurturing boarding house is situated in the heart of school, with

dedicated dormitories for boys and for girls. Over fifty pupils from Years

3-8 board from Monday to Friday, supported by our experienced House

Parents, Deputy Head of Boarding, matrons and boarding tutors.

Full boarders stay 4-5 nights per week while flexi boarders stay on set nights. Warm,

spacious, clean rooms have 4-6 beds with modern wash facilities. Pupils can bring

in items from home to decorate their space, making it more familiar. Evenings are

busy with activities such as Dodgeball, Wacky Races and Arts and Crafts; extra study

is also available to boarders. A cooked supper and breakfast are key parts of the

overnight stay, as well as toast and cereal before bedtime.

Boarding is essential preparation for children intending to move to boarding senior

schools, while for others, friendships are cemented and new ones made within the

boarding community. Boarding is fast becoming Feltonfleet’s most popular offering.

The Headmistress, in consultation with senior staff, works with you to

guide your choice of senior school to suit your child - a process which

starts in Year 5.

Pupils leave Feltonfleet after Common Entrance examinations in Year 8 and routinely

gain entry to their first choice senior school. Well-balanced, self-confident and ready

for the challenges to come, our leavers are highly thought of in senior school circles.

A high proportion of Year 8 children secure scholarships to leading independent

senior schools across a number of disciplines. Candidates for academic scholarship

follow a bespoke timetable with tutorial sessions, a process that fosters independent

learning and provides excellent preparation not only for the demanding academic

papers but for success at senior school. Scholarships are available in many areas

- one in three of our pupils wins senior school scholarships in recognition of their

particular talents, in music, drama, art, dance, design technology or sport.
