OLSH DARRA PRINCIPAL APPOINTMENT
It was announced on Monday that Petrea Rawlinson, currently Principal Immaculate Heart School, Leichhardt, will be Principal of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School, Darra from January, 2018. I have included the official announcement from the Executive Director of BCE, Pam Betts, for those who may have missed it.
On behalf of Fr Daniel Carroll, Parish Priest of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish Darra, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Petrea Rawlinson as Principal of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School Darra from the commencement of 2018.
Petrea is currently Principal of Immaculate Heart Catholic Primary School Leichhardt. Prior to this appointment Petrea held other leadership positions in Brisbane Catholic Education schools.
Petrea has a Master of Educational Leadership and Diploma of Teaching from the Australian Catholic University, a Bachelor of Education from the Queensland University of Technology and a Master of Education – Literacy from Charles Sturt University. This appointment follows public advertising and a selection process involving the parish priest, a representative from the school community and representatives of Brisbane Catholic Education on behalf of the Archdiocese.
I take this opportunity of acknowledging and thanking John O’Connor, outgoing Principal of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School and wishing him well in his new role as Principal of St Columba’s School Wilston..
I am sure you will join me in congratulating Petrea on this appointment.
Kind regards
Pam Betts | Executive Director
On a personal note, I have known Petrea for nearly seven years. Up to last year, Petrea and I were in the same school cluster together. OLSH is getting a woman of high integrity, a deep thinker and a person who will be devoted to her school community.
I have already spoken to Petrea and she is very excited to be joining the OLSH community. Together, we are planning for Petrea to visit shortly, meet members of the school community and begin the transition program. I will let you know once we have the day confirmed.
PRINCIPAL TRANSITION
The Principal transition program at OLSH will now commence. There are procedures and guidelines that will assist with this. This will include at least one visit, but I suspect two, all day meetings with Petrea and myself this term and possibly a day once school concludes.
Obviously, I will also be involved in a similar transition at St Columba’s. I have already spent one day there and will be visiting for another whole day next Wednesday, 8 November.
Officially, the change in Principal takes place on the 1st of January, 2018.

IN-COMING STAFF Alyce Beauchamp has recently returned to Australia following a number of years of teaching in England
including working with technology to enhance the students’ learning. Alyce has completed some relief work at
our school since late last term and this term.
Emily Smith is well known to the OLSH community as she is currently teaching Year 1W this term. She will be
at OLSH for all of 2018.
Stacey Gorman is the incoming STIE at OLSH. She is currently teaching at St Mark’s Inala. Stacey was
present for the Prep Information Night and Prep Orientation Day.
Jacqui Joliffe- Martin will be returning from leave in 2018.
Petrea Rawlinson; as stated above Petrea is the incoming Principal.
OUT-GOING STAFF Sian Holmes will be on maternity leave for 2018. We wish her all the best as she begins motherhood.
Jane Brischetto is concluding her long career in Catholic Education and at OLSH this year. We wish Jane all
the best as she enjoys her well earnt retirement.
ADMINISTRATION
Michelle Hanlon will be taking some leave next year. However, Michelle will be undertaking some short- term
contracts and relief teaching at OLSH.
Both short term contracts for Melinda Craig and Aimee Tia conclude at the end of the year. We thank both
Melinda and Aimee for their enthusiastic and committed approach to all aspects of their work at OLSH. In just
a short time they have contributed greatly to the learning at OLSH.
FINAL SCHOOL FEES STATEMENT Your final School Fees Statement for 2017 will be posted home this week.
We ask that you address ALL outstanding amounts prior to the 24th November 2017. If you have any
concerns with meeting this deadline, please contact the school office to make arrangements.
Disappointingly, there are a number of people with overdue accounts. While I understand that people’s
circumstances change, it is still important that people communicate that to the school. We have made
efforts to communicate with these families and we ask that people respond.
Direct Debits: If you are paying via Direct Debit and are wishing to make changes to your amount, frequency
or any other details over the holidays, please contact the school office for a Direct Debit amendment form. If
you nominated a final payment date on this year’s form you will need to complete a new Direct Debit request
form in 2018.
Concessions on school fees for 2018: If you wish to apply for a concession on your school fees for 2018,
please contact the school office for an application form. Your 2017 concession does NOT automatically entitle
you to a concession in 2018. YOU WILL NEED TO RE-APPLY.
Finally, a big THANK YOU to all those families who have already finalised their 2017 accounts.
2018 CLASS LISTS 2018 class lists are now being compiled and, at this stage, are with the Leadership Team before being
processed. They will be published in Week 9. Once they are announced, class lists will NOT be changed. Any
queries regarding this process are to be directed to me.
I have recently received a large number of requests over the past two weeks for 2018 classes. Please note, as
was clearly stated in latest two newsletters of Term 3, all requests were due by September 11. As this process
is now under way, it is now difficult to fully consider late requests purely on their own. The due date is given for
a very good reason.
SCHOOL UNIFORM OLSH is a uniform school and it is compulsory for children to wear the correct uniform at all times. I have been
disappointed recently to see a number of children not wearing the correct uniform. This includes shoes, shorts
and socks. While I can understand that some people may not wish to replace some parts of the uniform at this
time of the year, a letter to the Principal is expected.
BEFORE SCHOOL Supervision before school does not commence until 8:10 a.m. There has been a recent increase in the
number of children who are at dropped off at school prior to this time. THESE CHILDREN ARE
UNSUPERVISED AND IT IS THE PARENT’S RESPOSIBILITY TO ENSURE THEY ARE ADEQUATELY
SUPERVISED.
Children may sit quietly in the courtyard. There is no playing. We have recently had a number of incidents
prior to 8:10. If this continues, I will have no option but to make other arrangements with regard accessibility to
the school before 8:10.
APRE NEWS
RELATIONSHIPS AND SEXUALITY EDUCATION In order to support the role of parents, in 2018 OLSH will be embedding a Catholic perspective in
relationships, sexuality and child safety in the Australian Curriculum, Health and Physical Education (HPE).
Brisbane Catholic Education initiated the Relationships and Sexuality Project in 2013 by undertaking an
extensive literature review and a full audit of how relationships and sexuality is taught in Archdiocesan
schools and colleges. The findings showed that while it is a primarily a parent’s role to educate their child in
relationships and sexuality, the school, church and wider community also plays an important role in assisting
parents in doing so.
In 2016 the official program was released with an imprimatur from Archbishop Coleridge.
Brisbane Catholic Education believes that relationships and sexuality education is fundamental to realising
its mission. This mission is to help our students to live wholeheartedly according to God’s plan. For them to
flourish in their lives, to love responsibly and to live a life that embraces vulnerabilities and weaknesses.
The intention of Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) in Brisbane Catholic Education is to empower
young people to advocate for, and actively participate in personal safety, enriching the lives of themselves
and others and cultivating loving, just, and safe communities. Therefore, there are two focuses to RSE;
relationships and sexuality and safety. Students are taught from a Catholic perspective about sustaining
peaceful and loving relationships as well as Australian legislative requirements about child safety, such as
those from the Daniel Morcombe resources.
All our staff will be receiving professional development in implementing Relationships and Sexuality
Education into their teaching. Further information will be sent home early in 2018
OUR SCHOOL REMEMBERS During the month of November, Catholics traditionally pray for and remember those who have died. We
begin the month with the celebration of All Saints Day – acknowledging those who are in heaven, canonized
or un-canonized – and asking them to pray for us.
This year we have prepared a Remembrance Book.
Students and families are welcome to come and add the name of deceased loved one to the book.
It will be placed in a sacred space in the office. The book will be taken to staff prayer each Wednesday
during November and our staff will pray for the names of those in the book. Classes are also welcome to
take the Remembrance book and pray for all souls during their morning prayer rituals.
RECEIVING THE SACRAMENTS If your child has recently received any of the sacraments (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation)
outside of the Darra Jindalee parish please let the school office know. We aim to keep our records as up to
date as possible.
SVDP CHRISTMAS APPEAL It is an OLSH tradition to support our local St Vincent De Paul Conference by donating Christmas goods. Each year we give a very generous donation to our local conference and it’s a wonderful way for our student to show charity during the Advent season. The appeal starts in Week 6. We are collecting all the items that make Christmas special. These include: lollies, tinned hams, Christmas decorations, cordial, juice and poppas, puddings and cakes, popcorn

and long-life custard. Students can bring their donation to their classroom and the Mini Vinnies will regularly
collect the goods. We will present our donation to a local SVDP representative at our end of year liturgy.
SVDP CHRISTMAS TAGS Beginning this week, the Mini Vinnies will be selling Christmas tags before school in the Prep and
Undercover area right up to the end of the Term. The packs of tags only cost $1 and all proceeds go to
supporting the local St Vincent De Paul conference. Linda Allen has spent many hours preparing these tags.
It would be wonderful if you could support this Christmas fundraiser.
THANK YOU! Thank you to all families who donated to Socktober. We raised $850 for Catholic Mission – an amazing effort
which will help many children and communities in Uganda and Vietnam. A special thanks to the students of
Year 6, especially 6 Red who organized a disco to help fundraise.
Thank you again for your generosity.
UNWANTED STATIONARY ITEMS Every year, during the month of November, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School collects unwanted, unused
school stationery items and other items to be put into book packs for students in need. You may have some
of these items at home but have no further use for them. The school is seeking donations of:
Unused exercise books (any Year level), scrapbooks, display books, plastic document wallets,
scissors, headphones, HB pencils, wind-up crayons, etc.
Other items such as chair bags, library /homework/note bags are also in need.
If you can help in any way with these items, please sent your donations in to the School Office no later than
Monday 20th November.
Your kind generosity will enable us to support fellow students. Thanking you in anticipation of your support.

THOUGHTS FOR THE JOURNEY
Even though I am now back into life and ministry here at OLSH. Ifind myself particularly in times of quiet
reflection immersed once again in the experience of my Pilgrimage in the Holy Land. Towards the end of our
pilgrimage we were given a beautifully designed Pilgrims Cross which serves as a concrete symbol of our
journey. Last week I spoke of my experience on the Sea of Galilee. Today I include two photos of the sea.
One photo is from the boat and one is from the shore line. This landscape would have been very familiar to
Jesus.
The Jordan River flows into and out of the Sea of Galilee. The Gospel tells us that Jesus was baptised by
John The Baptist in the Jordan River. We experienced celebrating Mass on the bank of the Jordan River. In
the area we were the river was quite narrow. Once again we were able to put our hands into the waters of
the Jordan. Our faith tells us that all those hundreds of years ago Jesus was doing the same. I have included
a photo of the Jordan River.
Let Us Pray
Loving and gracious God may the Light of your Love shine down on our Christian sisters and brothers in the
Holy Land.
Enlighten Governments to work together to bring peace and justice to this land.
Amen

NEWS OF THE FORTNIGHT
PREP
This fortnight in Prep we have been exploring teen numbers. We have been representing these through pictures and practicing writing the matching numerals. In HASS, we have been labelling features on a map of the school. We loved wearing our silly socks for Socktober on Friday which supported The Catholic Mission. YEAR 1
Year One is enjoying this term’s science unit on Space. They are very enthusiastic about sharing what they already know about space and are very keen to know more! In English, Year One is learning about procedures. We know the parts of a procedure and most importantly, that the steps in a procedure have to be followed in the correct order. A highlight has been following a procedure to create a Paper Bag Monster! In Religion, we have been discussing who God is, what God is like and where God is. The children have created an artwork of their own image of God. YEAR 2
Year Two students loved wearing their crazy socks to raise money for Catholic Missions. In Religion, we have been learning that our church community draws on the actions and teachings of Jesus and guides us in our lives. We have identified key teachings from The Good Samaritan and The Greatest Commandment. In English, we have prepared and have been presenting our oral persuasive talks, focussing on using strong words to convince our audience. We have been exploring algorithms in Technology to use directional words to make pathways for the bee-bots. In Science, we have been comparing the forces of push and pull. YEAR 3
Term 4 is going by very quickly. The Year 3 students are enjoying travelling to Forest Lake for our swimming lessons. We are practising our swimming skills and love having fun in the pool. In Mathematics, we have been identifying pyramids and prisms and comparing them. Using nets, we are making and analysing 3D objects. Our English lessons on poetry are very interesting. Do you know what ‘onomatopoeia’ is? We have been learning that onomatopoeia is when a word imitates its natural sound or suggests the sound the object makes. Some examples include bang, pop, whoosh and drip. We are excited to begin our poetry assessment this week. As well as performing our poems, we will be listening to others perform their poem and giving them feedback.
YEAR 4
This week saw Mr Ward return from Long Service Leave (Hooray!!!) and Mrs Blake finish up her time
with Year 4 for a well -deserved rest away from teaching. Thank you, Mrs Blake! You are a talented and supportive teacher! Last Thursday, we presented our assembly about Socking it to Poverty in Uganda. Our teachers were delighted with the way we spoke and the respectful, self-controlled way we delivered our important message to the school community. Back in the classroom, we are getting very good at completing challenging word problems, our English advertisements are wonderfully expressive and persuasive and we are using the teachings of the Ten Commandments and readings about healing and reconciliation to help us become people who make informed and intelligent decisions. YEAR 5
In English, we have been learning about Poetry and writing some examples of different styles of poems, including Odes, which feature similes, metaphors and personification. We wrote some amazing odes in class with Mrs. Craig, which was a lot of fun. There are some budding young poets in Year 5. Solids, liquids and gases have been our focus in Science. We conducted "fair" tests to compare the viscosity of different liquids, timing how long each liquid took to drip into another cup. Fair tests require us to change only one thing, measure the results and keep all other things the same. We have also been learning about the qualities of good leaders and fine tuning our speeches for our Leadership campaigns, which begin this week with the nomination of school captains. This week, we enjoyed sharing our iMovies for our campaigns and are looking forward to being the next school leaders in 2018. YEAR 6
This fortnight in Year 6 we have been working very hard. Last week, Year 6 took part in a Parish Mass. The Mass was dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus, to coincide with October being a very special month for Mary. This week, as a school, we also celebrated a Mass for All Saints’ Day. Some classes went on to investigate the stories behind some of the saints we know and love so well. In the classroom, during our Maths lessons, we have been analysing and comparing data in different displays and also looking at how data can be made to look misleading. In English, we have continued to look at narratives, their structure and language features. We created some pretty crazy narratives as a class, and now we are working on planning our very own narratives. Our moves in Dance Fever are starting to look very sleek! We can’t wait for our parents to see us doing some traditional dances with a boy/girl partner!

The Excellent Learning and Teaching: Moving Forward Strategy is our system priority for growing the en-gagement, progress and achievement of every student in our Brisbane Catholic Education schools. Learn-ing is our work and your child’s success and wellbeing is at the heart of our collective mission as Catholic educators.
On Friday, 10 November, commencing at 9.00 am, we will be holding a special “Remarkable Moments” as-sembly in the school hall. This will be a time to celebrate our OLSH Super Learner Qualities which have helped all of our students to make remarkable progress in their learning this year. You are all invited to join in this celebration with our OLSH school community. THANK YOU MORNING TEA To thank all the class contacts and classroom volunteers who have helped to make remarkable learning possible in our school, there will be a morning tea outside the hall immediately following the assembly. All class contacts and classroom volunteers are invited. Hope you can make it.
Dear Parents,
My name is Linda Allen. For those parents who don’t know me – I am a former teacher at OLSH School.
For a number of years I have been collecting used postage stamps and used Christmas cards which can be recy-
cled to help the less fortunate. The stamps are processed, sold to a stamp dealer and all funds raised are sent to
the Mary MacKillop International Missions Fund which provides education for poor children in Peru and also
funds training for poor women in Peru to learn useful crafts so that they can increase their income – a hand up,
not a hand out. In 2016, approximately $62,000 was raised for this work through the sale of stamps. This ministry
is run solely by volunteers so all funds raised are put to good use in Peru. All I ask is that you do not cut the
stamps – just send the envelopes in to the school office. The stamps need to be cut by me according to the
stamp dealer’s specifications. For your information – it takes approximately 4,250 stamps to make a kilogram. A
kilo of domestic stamps raises $16 and a kilo of foreign stamps raises $18.
The used Christmas cards are cut down to make Christmas gift tags and bookmarks and these will be sold in the
parish closer to Christmas. All funds raised will be given to the Darra-Jindalee SVDP Conference and St Mary’s
SVDP Conference (Ipswich). Both these appeals are ongoing and have been going for nearly 20 years. It
doesn’t matter whether you have a few stamps/cards or a lot – collectively your contribution will make a differ-
ence to someone in need.
Thank you for taking the time to read this notice and I look forward to your support.
God bless,
Linda Allen
