This class is will teach you the basic understanding of visual art. No matter what other art classes you move into later, this class will give you the foundation to succeed with your future art courses. If you are taking Fine Craft Studio Art, you will be making several fabric/yarn based projects. You will be learning the basics of sewing by hand and by machine, as well as skills that will help you become independent and able to resolve simple problems. Each project will require different materials, so we will be discussing them in class, and you will have at least 2 weeks to get them. You fee is $10 which covers all binding materials and tools needed. If you are and IB Art Student, then welcome to IB Art. This class will have both Pre IB and IB students so with everyone's help and input, we will work as a team to make this as easy as possible. Please have a topic/art era/art style/artist in mind within the first week so, so we can discuss and get started on your assignments right away. If you get a chance, go into the IB website (not Ferguson IB section), under visual arts and look through the projects and ideas that have been posted to help you with your thoughts. Welcome Ferguson Art Falcons, 

If you are taking Drawing (1 or 2), Painting (1 or 2) or 2 Dimensional Studio Art this year, we will be covering both beginners and advanced techniques in class. This class is will teach you the basic understanding of visual art. No matter what other art classes you move into later, this class will give you the foundation to succeed with your future art courses. 

If you are taking Fine Craft Studio Art, you will be making several fabric/yarn based projects. Drawing Classes:

8 1/2 X 11 Hardbound sketchbook (any color - NO PERFORATED PAGES – see pic, can be bound or spiral) drawing pencils, white eraser and sharpener (with casing preferred) soft pencil pouch (no boxes) colored pencils (minimum 24 pack - 36 or 50 preferred) scissors and glue stick an accessible device to take photos, email and save them for class assignments Additional materials for specific projects and presentations may be required upon request for certain projects Earphones are allowed to listen to music ONLY!

Painting Classes:

8.5 X 11 Hardbound sketchbook (any color but NO PERFORATED PAGES- see pic, can be bound or spiral) plastic shoe box (no larger boxes or food containers please) with lid for storage of all supplies (Dollar store or

Walmart for >$1) drawing pencil, white eraser and sharpener (with casing preferred), scissors and glue stick accessible device to take photos, email and save photos onto jump drive watercolor brushes - 3 sizes minimum (brush multi pack is OK- Walmart less than $5) watercolor paints – paint pallet optional for additional color choices acrylic brushes - flat - 3 sizes minimum (brush multi pack is OK – Walmart less than $5) acrylic paints – optional for additional color choices small plastic containers with lids – optional to keep mixed paint for further use Additional materials for specific projects and presentations may be required for certain projects Earphones are allowed to listen to music ONLY! All paper or canvas boards for final projects will be provided as part of your fees

2 Dimensional Classes:

Same as Drawing supplies Additional materials based on projects (Ex: magazines, cardboard, etc.)

Fine Craft Studio Art Classes:

Pencil, white eraser, sharpener Sewing kit – must include; fabric scissors, measuring tape, thimble, seam ripper, sewing needles, pins (with balls on

the tips ONLY) – (Walmart less than $8) Plastic shoe box with lid White fabric pencil or chalk 1 old pair of jeans – to cut up 1 yard of cotton based fabric 1 yard of cotton based fabric (may be the same fabric) 1 or 2 skeins of yarn – medium thickness – any color but the same (if thinner yarn, then 4 skeins, 2 of each color-

will knit with double yarn) 1 small tin or plastic container with a lid for the pins – we will be making that, so please do not purchase an already

made version. Other supplies will be announced with 2 weeks anticipation to allow time to purchase

IB Students:

8 1/2 X 11 Hardbound sketchbook (any color but NO PERFORATED PAGES- see pic, may be bound or spiral) drawing pencil, white eraser and sharpener (with casing preferred), scissors, glue stick 1 inch ring view binder or Duotang folder - any color with sheet protectors and 5 dividers dividers (8) red pen jump drive (8 GB or larger) accessible device to take photos, email and save onto jump drive tablet/laptop can be used in class for research – but it is the responsibility of the student not the school Additional materials for their specific projects may be needed for their exhibition Earphones are allowed to listen to music ONLY!

Grade Distribution 4 point grading scale Rubrics and process due dates will be discussed and given per assignment (will be posted on portal) Final Grades for projects/assignments =2-4 grades, Progress grades =1-2 grades, Homework grades =2,

Participation/Working Grades =2, Journal/Do Now Grades =1, Extra Credit =1 Seats are assigned and attendance is taken by seat assignments – if you are not in your seat, you will be marked absent

Extra Credit: 1 ream of copy paper per nine weeks (1 grade) AND/OR 1 paper towel roll (large) per nine weeks Extra Credit: Attendance to any Ferguson Visual Art/Performing Art Show. Proof will be discussed. (1 grade)

Class Rules All students are expected to abide by the Code of Student Conduct!

1. Follow directions the first time given.2. Be on time to all class meetings and from lunch (when applicable) or have a valid pass3. Respect one another. 4. Be courteous, quiet and attentive while others are speaking.5. Use appropriate language at all times.6. Respect school and personal property such as student desks, chairs and SUPPLIES given to you.7. If you are working in the Art Studio, you must behave appropriately or be permanently excluded.8. Cleaning up the room is part of your grade and EVERYONE will participate, regardless if you made the mess or not. This

is a team effort. You will not be allowed to leave to the next class/lunch if the room is not clean!9. To support school fundraisers, I do allow eating of purchased snacks in class as long as you pick up after yourselves. You

may NOT eat your lunch in my class. If you do not pick up after yourselves, and I find wrappers in dark corners of my room, you will lose this privilege.

10. Please understand, this class is structured but you will have certain freedoms that will be cut off if you cannot behave in a mature manner.

11. Cell phones are not permitted during instruction/lecture. Student will be sent to exclusion for not abiding to this rule after the first warning. ALL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF UNLESS TEACHER INSTRUCTS YOU TO TURN ON for a specific assignment.

12. You may use your cell phone while you are independently working on your art assignment but to listen to MUSIC ONLY! – no surfing the web, social media, texting, or movies!

13. STAY IN YOUR SEATS UNTIL THE BELL RINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Academic Honesty:

Students will be expected to abide by the School’s Honor Code. Any act of academic dishonesty, such as plagiarism or cheating, will not be tolerated. If such actions occur, an administrative referral and parent conference will be carried out by the instructor. Any stealing of another student’s artwork and passing off as yours will be treated with the same consequences above.

Discipline Consequences

1. Verbal Warning 2. Exclusion from class 3. Parent Contact & Conduct cut 4. Written Referral to administration

Assignments

1. All homework & projects are due at the beginning of the period on the due date, unless indicated. For written work, drop off bins are labeled by period.

2. All handouts must be done in blue ink and some assignments will be typed and require the use of Microsoft Word. 3. All assignment must include the following heading in the upper right:

Name Date Period Assignment Title (First line of paper, centered). 4. NO CREDIT will be given for sloppy, incomplete and plagiarized assignments. 5. FOR ALL ARTWORK, YOUR NAME AND PERIOD WILL BE WRITTEN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PAGE ON THE BACK! 6. Most art assignments will be done in sketchbook unless indicated as a project.7. Projects will be done on final papers/canvases, etc.8. ALL STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO ABIDE BY THE SCHOOL’S HONOR CODE.

Make-up/Late Work1. I will not remind you about make-up work. It is the student’s responsibility to inquire about missed assignments when

absent. (Preferably before school). Exchange phone numbers with another student or email me to find out about missed assignments. You may also check your portal for missed assignments.

2. Late assignments with excused absence will be marked with an X until the next class day. If you have the assignment to turn in the next day, then it will be graded. If you do not have the assignment, it will be changed to a Z. You have a total of 3 class days to turn in the assignment, each day late after the first will lower the grade by one.

3. Late assignments without excused absence will be marked with an X until the next day. It is the same procedure as above, but you only have a 2 day window.

4. Check your portal for assignments due.

Tardy Policy

As indicated in the class rules, I expect you to be on time and ready to start class at your seat when the tardy bell rings. Student will receive a detention after the third tardy to class and for each subsequent tardy. If you have a legitimate reason for being tardy, I expect you to have a signed pass with the time you left from the previous teacher/adult who dealt with you. You are responsible for making-up any work missed during your absence/tardy.

Bathroom/Hall Passes & Dismissal

1. No passes will be given for the first and last ten minutes of each class and for crucial moments during class time (i.e. lectures, critiques, etc.)

2. The bathrooms are conveniently located right next to this class, so make it quick.3. NEW BATHROOM POLICY: You will receive 4 bathroom passes per semester, which means that you are allowed to use

the bathroom during this period 4 times each semester. NO MORE passes will be given after the 4 allotted. After you use the 4 passes, you have no more bathroom privileges for this class until the next semester.

4. Put your name on all 4 passes and keep them in a safe place, I will not be policing your passes. If you do not have your name on them and you drop/lose them, I will not issue you a replacement. Do not keep them in your supply box or sketchbook.

5. I understand the school is large and crowded, but please try to go between classes. 6. Please drop off your bathroom pass on my desk and sign the log book with your name and time before leaving for the

bathroom. Grab the orange key hall pass and go. After returning, sign back into the log book with the time returned.7. ONLY 2 students are allowed to leave the room at the same time.8. Bathroom privileges will be suspended if you choose to abuse them.9. If you have any special circumstances that require you to go to the bathroom during this class time more than the 4

allowed times, please see your counselor and/or have your parent email them with your situation. A medical excuse will be needed in order to facilitate your request.

10. If after the semester is over, you still have your 4 passes unused, I will collect them and give you an extra credit A for not leaving this class all semester.

11. Hall passes will be given only when necessary (important matters). 12. I will dismiss you, NOT the bell. The room must be cleaned and organized before leaving and everyone must be in

your seats for dismissal.

FILM PERMISSION SLIP

Parents,Throughout the year we plan on viewing some films that are related to the subject of the Arts. Some films are rated “PG-13” or even “R” due to some violence and/or descriptive language. The purpose of these films is to broaden your child’s perspective on artistic topics. The various movies are a part of the school’s approved library collection.

This permission form is to allow your child to view them. If this section is not signed, the student may not participate in watching the movies and will be given an alternate written assignment.

If at any time you change your mind, please contact me via email with your child’s name, ID and period. If this portion is not signed, the student may not watch any class movies.
