From the President

May is a great time to get some art done. I'm trying to get caught up so I get some studio time this month. The board has the quarterly planning meeting in May, and we'll be reviewing the budget and how the year is going and making plans. After our successful Spring Member Show, I'm feeling very positive about the way this group works together to create opportunities for ourselves as artists -- to

put on super high quality events like our Spring Member Show. So many of us step up to help for our major events by taking a role and by signing up for a task on SignUp.com. It's really a lot of fun to work together on these shows. We should commend ourselves on that this time. We're all still working on streamlining the job of chair for shows. And the board is taking actions that will increase sales at our shows. For the Spring Member Show, the week before the show, almost every position was filled in SignUp.com. We all really did our share to create a well orchestrated event. I feel our show teamwork gets better and better so I'm looking forward to the next shows. We have 14 people on our show teams that know their roles and do the work under the leadership of the show chairs now. We also have board members assigned to be the liaison for each area. The goal is to have a hassle-free support system for all of us -- sharing the tasks and knowing what to do. We added two show teams recently -- the Drop-Off and Pick-Up team which is overseen now by Malene Mortensen and the Show Sales assistant, Jill Riggins, that helps Brenda Weisman, in her role as staff treasurer for show sales. I plan to enjoy making art this May and look forward to doing something I want to enter in the National Fine Arts and Photography Show. The NFA and Photography Show call is on our website now, and the deadline for entries is July 7th. -Emilie Parker

Member Interview Jane Friday The art world spotted Jane Friday early. In Catholic high school, Sister Claire found a way for her to have two hours of art classes every day. Sister Claire bent rules from time to time, which actually landed the nun in trouble. (Question: with Whom might a nun be in trouble?)

Jane studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Student League in Denver. She worked as a legal assistant for top Denver lawyers Sherman and Howard and others, thoroughly enjoying the sort of thinking and planning that gets expended in courtroom preparation. Organizational skills that were buffed up there worked well in her artistic pursuits, too, as she became caught up in the care and feeding of art groups.

In fact, she was President of LAA three times, the Boulder Art Association for two years , and a year for Palleteers in Northglenn. Beginning with LAA in 1988, she worked on the Taste of Louisville, grant writing, and chairing shows. She chaired three one year; in fact, at that time each board member chaired a show simply as part of their usual duties.

Jane raised two daughters, and surely had a most creative way of putting them through college..........she delivered "Telegrams" for Eastern Union, appearing in character at gatherings to celebrate customers' big events. As Fifi the French Maid she entered, singing to specific people whose names she had to get right in songs written just for them. There was one costume with top hat and smart red tails, and one of an Amazon woman in a leopard leotard. Now there's a picture! One aspect of this life includes shivering in the snow wearing Not Very Much, waiting for an entrance. Who, as they say, knew? Exhausting, perhaps, but what a creative way to fund college!

part of LAA is one important thing as well. Usually the first thing we hear from qualified leadership candidates is "but I'm planning a lot of travel". To fill LAA's leadership roles having a partner is the perfect solution. Our new board member Anne O'Rourke is going to be our new Co-VP. Heart-felt thanks go to Jane Evans, who has so kindly kept the job of vice president last year and for this year so far. Anne is on the board now as a member and will start as co-VP as soon as we find another co-VP to do it with her. She is super qualified for this leadership role having been in education in project implementation in her career. Yay!! Who will be our second 2017 co-VP? With an excellent partner like Anne it's a very attractive opportunity. Our two co-Vice Presidents will become co-Presidents in 2018. The co-Vice President's role includes updating the website, helping with communications and helping with other leadership roles. The Vice Presidents will become presidents in January. Just think ... starting in January 2018 we need another VP or two co-VPs. Perhaps you would consider being on the board and being Vice President for 2018? Congratulations to Anne O'Rourke on her new leadership position. I look forward to introducing her at the May member meeting and Barb McKee will be interviewing her for the June newsletter.

Volunteers Needed

We need your help!!! We need a Co-Vice President. Contact Emilie Parker to discuss: [email protected] Volunteer Coordinator for the National Fine Art and Photography Show is needed. Job entails reviewing the Volunteer Spot, (will be set up prior), contact members, if we need volunteers, help volunteers with knowing the particular tasks. Contact Malene Mortenson at [email protected] Fall Member Show: We need two co-chairs and a volunteer coordinator for this show held the first week in November. This is an excellent show with crafts and awards and a fun and festive atmosphere before the holidays. As co-chair you will learn everything you need to know to put on a super-successful Fall Member Show. Lots of help available on what to do when and how. A team of members including past co-chairs, the board and our support teams all pitch in to make this show fun and successful as you lead the way We need people to help at meetings with set-up and take down. Chairs and tables have to be taken out and put away. If you can be part of a team that helps every month with that please contact Patti Harrison, [email protected]. Open Studio needs a volunteer to help set up the room some

Mondays. Contact Melanie Zwicker at [email protected]

Jane loves this point in her life, retired but still teaching as she has for twenty years, introducing students to such complexities as spotting differing values in a composition, or understanding light sources. Lessons always end with a (gentle) 15-minute critique, knowing that students will discover things the teacher may not mention. -mckee
