John 3:3Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you,

unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

What does it mean to be “born again”?

John 3:4

Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into

his mother's womb and be born?”

What does it mean to be “born again”?

John 3:7-87 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know

where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

John 3:12-1512If I have told you earthly things and you do not

believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13No one has ascended into heaven

except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in

the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15that whoever believes in him may have

eternal life.

1 Peter 1:3-53Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus

Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope

through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4to an inheritance that is imperishable,

undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the

last time.

The path from life to death

Jesus predicts his deathLuke 18:31-33

31Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will

be fulfilled. 32He will be delivered over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; 33they will flog him and kill him. On the

third day he will rise again.”

Jesus predicts his deathLuke 18:34

The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not

know what he was talking about.

The path from life to death

Jesus tried and sentenced to deathLuke 23:1

1Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.

2And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes

payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king.”

3So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

20Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again.

21But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”

…23With loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed.

Jesus is crucifiedLuke 23:33-34

33When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what

they are doing.”

Jesus is crucifiedLuke 23:44-46

44It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land

until three in the afternoon, 45for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.

Jesus is buriedLuke 23:52-53

52(Joseph of Arimathea) went to Pilate and asked for the body of

Jesus. 53Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid him in a tomb cut in stone,

where no one had ever yet been laid.

Jesus is risen!Luke 24:1-8

1On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had

prepared and went to the tomb. 2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they

entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4While they were wondering about this, suddenly

two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to

them…

Jesus is risen!Luke 24:1-8

…“Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in

Galilee: 7‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the

third day be raised again.’ ” 8Then they remembered his words.

The gospel of 1st importance1 Corinthians 15:3-5

3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he

appeared to Peter, then to the twelve…

The gospel of 1st importance1 Corinthians 15:17-20

17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those

also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope in this life

only, we are of all people most to be pitied. 20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead.

The path from

life to death

The path from

life to death to life

By his death sin was taken away, by his resurrection righteousness was renewed and restored. For how could he by dying have freed us from death, if he had yielded to its power? How could he have obtained the victory for us, if he had fallen in the contest? Our salvation may be thus divided between the death and the resurrection of Christ: by the former sin was abolished and death annihilated; by the latter righteousness was restored and life revived, the power and efficacy of the former being still bestowed upon us by means of the latter.

Romans 6:5, 8-105For if we have been united with him in a death

like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his…8Now if we have died with

Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9We know that Christ, being raised from the dead,

will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he

lives to God.

OUR path from life to death to life

1 Corinthians 15:54-5754 When the perishable puts on the imperishable,

and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is

swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the

victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
