Friday 27 Phillip Johnston Quartet(An) exceptionally individualistic composer and superb improviser… The New Yorker

Phillip Johnston is an American saxophonist/composer who lives in Sydney, while still maintaining a musical life in his hometown of New York City. He will be performing new music developed for his March residency at John Zorn’s NYC performance space, The Stone.

His most recent CD, Manhattan Moonrise with The Microscopic Septet, was listed on many ‘best of’ lists for 2014, and described by the New York City Jazz Record as, ‘deep-content art music with a strong sense of humor and swing’. Recent performances of his score for Lotte Reineger’s 1926 silent film, The Adventures of Prince Achmed include the Sydney Vivid Festival and MONA FOMA 2015. He has recently completed an 8-city US tour of Wordless!, his collaboration with Art Spiegelman, which premiered at the Sydney Opera House in 2013.

Tony Gorman & Bobby Singh duoTony’s infinitely nuanced clarinet playing is pensive. Accompanied by tabla wizard Bobby Singh, this duo was described by SMH as ‘intimate, like music being whispered in your ear, or like a confession from a best friend’. Join us for this intimate duo performance.

Sandy Evans Trio featuring Bobby SinghThis music redefines the fusion of jazz and Indian music with thrilling dialogue, breath-taking improvisations and stunning percussion solos. The forms of Indian music have long been a source of inspiration for Sandy’s music. Her trio, joined by Bobby Singh perform rhythms that take you on a musical voyage.

This long awaited launch of Matt McMahon’s first solo album, The Voyage of Mary and William opens SIMA’s 2015 season. Drawing on his love of improvisation and piano playing in all its forms McMahon pays tribute to his forebears.

Winner of many prestigious awards, including the Freedman and National Jazz Awards, Matt McMahon is a leading Australian pianist/composer whose exciting work is appreciated by audiences and critics alike. An active collaborator with the likes of Vince Jones, Joseph Tawadros, Phil Slater and Dale Barlow.

Joseph O’Connor Trio

Melbourne based Joe O’Connor blew away judges and audiences when he scooped first place at the prestigious National Jazz Awards in 2013. The following year he won the Bell Award for Young Australian Jazz Artist of the year. One of Australia’s most exciting young pianists and composers, come hear the ‘breathtaking originality’ of his trio, which also features acclaimed guitarist Chris Hale.

Saturday 7 Chris Cody QuartetSeducing audiences world-wide and receiving rave reviews from critics, Cody’s music reveals a love of the classical and jazz traditions. JAZZED UP IN BERRY 9 – 10 May 2015

Pack your bags and get ready for a weekend of food, wine and jazz on our inaugural festival in the historic town of Berry. Over the weekend we have three performances featuring The Vampires with their unique blend of soulful jazz, old-school reggae, romantic Afro-Peruvian, danceable Afro-Cuban, exotic Balkan and all-out funk-laden Afrobeat and Phillip Johnston performs swinging new jazz and blues compositions, recently premiered in New York, with an all-star 7-piece Australian band at the Berry School of Arts and Vince Jones, vocalist and trumpeter, an Australian jazz legend performs at the Coolangatta vineyard.

International Winter Series May/June

Our annual International Winter Series returns and whilst there is still an embargo on our lineup we can tell you that we will be featuring artists who have garnered a reputation as one of the coolest jazz trios to come out of the US, a Multiple Grammy Nominee and Guggenheim Fellow saxophonist and more. In previous years we have proudly presented Joshua Redman, Greg Osby and Aaron Goldberg. We promise to deliver another amazing line-up featuring artists from the USA, Africa and Korea.

COMING UP IN 2015

JUNE/JULY/ AUGUST SIMA @ the Sound LoungeOur much loved Sound Lounge series will continue in June, July and August. On Friday and Saturday nights we’ll be presenting new projects, CD launches with the best in contemporary improvised jazz featuring local and interstate artists.

Freedman New Jazz Master Series Our partnership with the Freedman New Jazz Master series continues in 2015. We celebrate the work of past recipients of the prestigious Freedman Jazz Fellowship Award.

In 2015 these will include part II of Matt McMahon’s Paths and Streams, premiering new compositions by McMahon, Marc Hannaford’s international quartet featuring US artists Ellery Eskelin and Tom Rainey with Australians Scott Tinkler and Marc Hannaford, plus Christopher Hale’s Sylvan Coda.

Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival November

Now in its fourth year, this special festival has been firmly established as a unique event showcasing the best female jazz musicians from home and abroad. In 2015 look out for specially commissioned new works, outstanding international artists and of course our free outdoor concert.
