Leaders are made

Dear Dave,

Do you feel that some people are born leaders, or do you have to readand study to become one? --Michael

Dear Michael,

I don’t believe anyone is born a leader. I’ve watched all three of my kids beingborn, and not once did the doctor say, “Congratulations, Dave! You have a littleeight-pound, six-ounce leader!” No, I believe people make choices.

I’m 49 years old, and I’ve been studying leadership ever since I opened mycompany almost 20 years ago. I was really awful when I first started. I made somany bad, dumb mistakes! But I’m a world-class leader now. I’ve learned howto do this stuff, and its taken thousands and thousands of hours of reading andstudying and lots of experiences—both good and bad—to get to this point. It’salso meant having to realize that I don’t know everything and taking time toexamine my mistakes and learn from them.

Malcolm Gladwell wrote a fabulous book called Outliers. In it, he studied peoplewho are unusually successful. In the process, he discovered that while somepeople may have a natural predisposition toward some areas, the key was theytook the gifts they had and then practiced and studied for thousands of hours toturn their gifts into world-class talents. In other words, these people made choices, and their “talents” were really acquired skills.

This stuff doesn’t just occur. You’re not a born leader any more than you’re a bornfootball player, actor or musician. You may start with a gift, but you have to makea choice to work your tail off if you want to develop that gift to its fullest potential! —Dave

Why should I adjust it?

Dear Dave,

We got a big income tax refund earlier this year, but I heard you tellsomeone to adjust their tax withholding so they don’t get a refund. Whyshould you do this? --Justin

Dear Justin,

Let’s say you get a $3,000 refund. Do you know why you got that refund? It’sbecause you had $250 too much taken out of your paycheck every single monthduring the past year. Basically, you loaned the government $3,000 of your ownmoney interest-free for 12 months. A refund isn’t free money, Justin. It’s yourown cash that you get back because you paid in too much during the previousyear.

Believe it or not, Santa Claus doesn’t live in Washington, D.C. There’s no freeride! So rather than loan the government money that you earned and workedhard for, how about bringing it home and using it to get out of debt and get controlof your finances? —Dave

PROFESSIONALemployment Advice Column

If you have any questions aboutinterviewing, hiring, or work, just email

Ask Diana. I’d love to hear from you. Dueto the volume of response, not every

question will appear in the column, butmost questions will receive an email

response within 2 to 3 days.

I moved down here from De-troit, and I have to get some-thing going so that I can bringmy family down. The sales jobI have now isn’t really cuttingit. I saw a job where the hourslook good and the money isokay. I talked with the man-ager about two months ago,but I decided that I wasn’t in-terested. I called back andtalked with her again when thisjob didn’t go very good, andshe asked me to fax or emailher my resume – even though Isaid I could deliver it in per-son. I decided to just go aheadand deliver the resume insteadso that I could get the inter-view out of the way. When I

got there, the receptionist toldme that the manager doesn’tsee anyone without anappointment. I left the resume, but I haven’t heard from themanager yet. Do you think Ishould drop by again?

-Houston, TX Reader

Wow, I sure wouldn’t go by again.Unless an ad says that walk-ins arewelcome, you should arrange aninterview time. Most recruiters aretightly scheduled and want to see aresume before arranging an inter-view. You would have heard bynow if the manager had any interest.

Do I have to wear panty hoseto an interview? It’s too hotduring the summer.

-Magnolia, TX Reader

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but you’re going to need to wearhose. I know that It’s Houston, it’ssummer, and it’s hot. You have toremember this is your only chanceto create a good first impression.

How should a woman shakehands at an interview? Mymother showed me how toshake, but it seems a little weird.

- Pasadena, TX Reader

There is no special handshake forwomen. Always offer your hand im-mediately, make eye contact, andsmile. Shake hands firmly and hold itfor 2 – 3 seconds but don’t pumpyour hand up and down. A weakhandshake can be a deal breaker, but don’t squeeze hard either. Prac-tice before you interview and remem-ber to have clean hands with well-kept nails. There is nothing worsethan the fingertip shake that feels likea wet fish although some women think
